Profit Never Changes - A Fallout 4 Business Quest

To the Judge and his Jury, not that they join his jury. I suspect Zeller called his lieutenants Jury, just like he called himself a Judge.
They might have another name for themself than Zeller's Army but that's what Kessler calls them if you get the quest to kill them from her. It's also used in her terminal entries.

I'm not sure how big Zeller's Army currently is though. We are at least 6 months before Canon and we know they didn't simply recruit people or had other raiders join them. Maybe they aren't an "army" yet.

Right, that's makes sense. Thanks for that! I do have plans for Zeller, though for obvious reasons I don't want to spoil them.

While Psykers can be ridiculous dangerous, Lorenzo is a horrible example of that. Sure, he got immortality and some kind of telekinesis but I'm not sure how useful that is outside of a fight. He's also limited by the fact that he's only one person.

True. It's possible I'm overestimating his abilities, due to the fact that my preconceptions of telekensis are probably more based on popular culture then what he actually shows in game.

For the mind controllers there is a whole list of them.
On the low end of the power scale, we get Professor Calvert from Point Lookout. A guy who got his power by being a disembodied brain floating in biogel for something like 200 years. Sounds familiar? Anyway, he could telepathically communicate with people all over Point Lookout. Not control them, but long-range communication that's undetectable to anyone but the target is still useful.
In the middle of the scale, we get stuff like the Beastlords. They could control mutated wildlife like dogs, wolfs, and radscorpions. I would place the AntAgonizer here, maybe a bit above the Beastlords. If she ever gets a giant ant queen or some of the Marigold fire ant warriors...
On the high end of the power scale, we got Melchior. A super mutant from Fallout 2 that could control Deathclaws.

Yep, sounds very familiar indeed. And long-range mental communication is indeed a powerful boon. And actually, now I'm wondering if the Wasteland Whisperer and Animal Friend Perks would count as Psyker ability, considering it gives the possibility to tame many Wasteland Creatures.

We also get a whole list of precogs in Fallout. Poplar, the Forecaster, some Nightkin, and of course Mama Murphy. And Mama Murphy is the most ridiculous example of that list. During the quest Reunions, she can give you the perk "Foreknowledge", which reduces the damage you take during the fight with Kellogg. During the quest Hunter/Hunted you can avoid fighting the courser because she flat out gives you the deactivation code for that courser.

Yeah, Mama Murphy is quite the precog and the character. Honestly, I like her a lot, and have planned bits for her in this quest, should you make it to Quincy before it falls, or you find her after it does. I enjoyed the Forecaster from New Vegas as well.

[Behold, RobCo Production Line! The Empress commands you to awaken and propregate new automatons! Function in subservience before Her Divine Will!]

You roll your eyes as you finish looking through the innards on the console. This console is being surprisingly finicky, which is an annoyance. "Tian Ming, what have I told you about trying to make everyone serve me?"

[You've told me many things about that subject, Empress. Which Entry should I replay for you?]

"And yet you keep insisting on making everyone worship me." You reply, as you screw the cover in. You honestly hope this works. It's the fifth time you've tried getting this terminal to function, and you do not want to have to go through the entire bank of consoles again. "In fact, I think I remember saying not to do that."

[I do not recall such a conversation. My auto-bias protocols must have edited the audio to confirm my programming. Editing in progress.] There is a pause, as Tian Ming readjusts her hand over to put the screw in a hole in the bottom you can't reach. [Editing done. You want this machine to renounce capitalism and obey you! I will ensure it does, my Empress!]

You put a hand over your lips, trying really hard not to chuckle at your companion's antics. While Tian Ming does not have an auto-bias protocol - and you would know, being her creator and checking her code constantly - you're sure the lack of one would not stop her from proclaiming your greatness. It's one of the many quirks she's picked up on your travels together.

"I dunno, Tian. I'm sure it's more likely to obey Atom." A voice to your side asks. "His Glow is running the place, after all."

While most people would have probably freaked out at the mention of Atom, you just simply turn your head over to notice the younger of your human employees. London just leans upon the edge of the terminal, grinning at the robot beneath you. You've noticed the red shirt and blue pants she has on, which makes it the third pair of clothes she's changed into today. Must still be experimenting with clothing choices.

[His Glow? Ma'am, Atom's Glow is but a dim light before the radience of…]

"Tian, she's just baiting you into an argument." You reply, And not even a serious one, by the grin on her face. "And besides, I think it's time that we be a little more serious right now.

[Right. Sorry, Empress. Now, if my calculations are correct, once we turn the machine on, we should be able to get production going. Now, not all the lines will be operational, but we can worry about that later. By my calculations, we can safely make 14 Protectrons a week.]

"Only 14 a week?" London asked. "Seems a bit low."

[You have to remember that these production lines have not been used in quite some time. We don't want to risk breaking the equipment this early]

"Not to mention that each robot has to be inspected and tested, to make sure there are no defects." You add. "Until we have more employees, that will take some time to do. Especially with the RoboBrains."

[Of course, the amount of raw resources is also a concern we must consider. Speaking of which, did you find anything interesting, London?]

"Oh boy, did I ever! Did you know that next door there was a company that made neon signs?" Huh, London's shaking with excitement. This has got to be good. "Well, me and Andrew have been moving them over. And I think we've got enough for the front of the store!"

"Front of the store?" You ask, eyebrow raised, as you boot up the terminal. Come on, come on...

"Yeah. Andrew thinks we can use them to advertise that we're open for business. Hell, we even found a lot of large Xs all lined up together!"

Lots of Xs all lined up together… [Wait, were those Xs in groups of three?]

"Yes! Yes! Yes!" you interrupt in joy, as the terminal finally makes it past the BIOS screen. "We're in business, we're in business!"

And indeed, you are in business. As the long-dormant production lines start to awaken and move, you can hear the movements inside, starting to work on creating the first robot. The first step of achieving your dreams, born the first time you looked at a robot and knew what you wanted to do with it.

For you are Hang Xin. Once a small Chinese girl born without legs in a post-Great War America, you refused to let the Wasteland take you. Instead, you built a robot capable of being your legs. You studied any medical information you could get a hold of, and poured over robotic schematics. Hell, you even read a few books on how to run a business, though you question a lot of what was written. And when people needed help, you did your best to help them. Just like your home in Gastop City did for you and your family.

But you knew you needed an actual base of operation to produce robots. So eventually you and Tian Ming left Gastop City, and came to the Commonwealth in search of a place to start your business. And while you weren't sure what you'd find, you hadn't imagined a secret underground RoboBrain facility. But you couldn't think of a better stroke of good fortune! Sure, how they had been obtained was absolutely barbaric, and it hurt your soul to read what went on. But you cannot change what was done. You can only use what you have now to better the Commonwealth.

Already, ideas of what to build fill your head. But you know that to try and get too greedy now will only result in lost opportunities and empty hands. And probably being tortured by Judge Zeller. You're going to have to build Xin Industries up carefully. The good news is, the very robots your creating will be a large help in that.

Of course, it's not going to be all robots helping you…

--

"So, it's no Michael Angelo's, but it's got all the neon signs we'd ever need." Andrew Radcliffe says, as he pops open a Nuka-Cola. He's got his boots up on the confrence room table. "Got enough for the outsides. Enough for the billboards. In fact, give me some time, and I could add 'em to the Robobrains. Make them glow real bright."

You look over to the former Las Vegas resident, who's already drawn up a few different ideas for your company logo, and placed them all over the table. Along with flyers. And a couple of papers with company slogans written on them. And they're pretty good ones, which is no surprise for the man you met on your way to the Commonwealth. He's always been able to sell himself to others while you've traveled together, which has helped with traders. And now one of his jobs is selling Xin Industires to the people of the Commonwealth.

Of course, he's also talked himself into plenty of trouble as well. Which is why he's persona non grata in New Vegas. And ended up literally buried up to his neck at Last Call. And barely avoiding being castrated at Vault 69. Aaaaaaaand probably why you saw him running from that assassin south of Gastop City.

"Hmm pretty good. Though I'd want to hold off on advertising until we have some robots ready to sell." You reply, looking at one of the designs. Hmm, a jade green on black background does seem like a good color design. "Or at least protect ourselves if the Judge decides to get ideas."

[Do not worry. This position is well fortified! Unless they can bypass the defense like I could, the worst they could do is trash the storefront.]

You pat Tian Ming. "True. But eventually we'll need to deal with Zeller. I find what he does… distasteful." That is an extreme understatement, but there is no need to be unnecessarily vulgar. "And I don't want to find his men at the doorstep. Back on the signs. Is there a way we can make more glass? A furnace could be very useful."

"Nah. Thing's broken, unfortuantly. Funny, considering all the intact signs." Andrew responds. "There's still quite a bit to look through there, so we'll have plenty of signs and letters if we want them. Also was some rubble blocking a few doors. I'd like to get a chance to clear it out and get a peek at the goodies."

You pause. You really want your employees more focused on the business side of things. But you also don't want to lose a chance to get at scavenge that's been left buried for 200 years. And it's right next door, so everything is probably safe. Unless someone ghoulified and got stuck there all this time.

However, before you can come to a decision, Andrew continues. "I know there of a few other places we could explore. As far as I know, the police station and the airport might have some stuff we can pick through. Of course, if you're willing to expand, I've got some ideas as well."

You hold out your hands, stopping him before he really goes into it. "Let's hold up on expansion until we can get ourselves settled. We're still working on our first set of robots, after all."

"I know, I'm letting my eyes get ahead of my mind again." Andrew agrees, before taking a swig of his soda. "I've just got all these ideas!"

"Hey, I've got ideas as well." You say. "I see a world where robots are providing care. Care the Wasteland hasn't seen for a long time! But…" You stop yourself, maknig sure you calm yourself. "We have to start small. Which means only a few robots at a time." You stop to think for a moment. "And making sure there's no issues with them."

"Right, first impressions. Rogue robots with our logo might be bad for that."

You raise an eyebrow. "Might?"

"I've read some Pre-War lawyer-speak. You'd be surprised what they'd say to make it seem like it's not their fault. Really fast too."

As Andrew starts going over his favorite weasel words of a bygone era, you listen to him. Mainly because it's funny, but also to keep your excitement from bubbling out. Otherwise, you might be too busy somersaulting in excitement.

well eye bots sound like really neat ad bots to me
maybe something for security and then a good mix of low cost droids for selling.

I'm not going to lie the Assaultron has always been far more fearsome to me then any Sentry Bot.

Edit: That Being said. I did need to correct this plan to actually make the costs match up.

Depends on the area. In the open, Sentry will rip most attackers apart. Close quarters, Assaultron has access to Stealth Boys and doesn't overheat.
Assaultrons are fast, Sentry Bots Aren't Even in an open field. I'd still be more terrified of the assaultron especially if the assaultron has turned invisible.

But, Yeah I do understand the powers of Sentries. I just believe Assaultrons are better for their uses, and the head laser they have is complete bullcrap.

[X] Plan Medicalworks.

I hope these eyebolts have some form of self defence
They Do, and they're the cheapest bot we can make even if they do use nuclear material.

Eyebot (Fallout 4)

Eyebots are a type of robot found in the Commonwealth and Nuka-World in 2287. One of the more elegant creations of RobCo Industries, the Eyebot is a hovering robot designed for a variety of purposes.[1] On the surface, it was designed for giving consumers instant access to radio and television...

That being said they're also the weakest, with their main strong point being the ability to hover, and their cheap costs. It's far more effective to make an eyebot healer then any other type for instance. Sure it might not be as strong, but that doesn't matter.

Not Necessarily. We know from well fallout that any robot can salvage, and pretty much do any task. Even Eyebots can salvage look at fallout new vegas.
That maybe hard as it does not have any appendage to do that. But still need a workforce and a Protectron is the best now we have that is available

Protectron (Fallout 4)

Protectrons are a type of robot encountered in the Commonwealth, the Island and Nuka-World in 2287. A widespread and popular model in RobCo Industries' line of products, the Protectron was designed as an inexpensive work drone, capable of performing a wide variety of tasks such as construction...

Honestly I removed the protectrons in my plan due to their cost. But If We look at Ed-E, and Realize that Assaultrons are stealthier, faster and better in combat then Protectrons. We realize that Protectrons aren't really necessary at all. With Assaultrons pretty much being better then them in every way, and Eyebots being a cheaper supply.

Just like your home in Gastop City did for you and your family.
Nice, some backstory. I wonder where Gastop City would be on a map? Anyway, that doubt about pre-War business practics is good. Actually, I would be careful with anything that was made pre-War, being object or idea, given how insane people were back then.

Also, I finally remembered why the "missing leg" thing sounded familiar. Proctor Ingram had something similar in her backstory. She didn't make a robot though instead, she made a modified power armor. Something we might want to look into if we ever make a combat version of Tian Ming.

"So, it's no Michael Angelo's, but it's got all the neon signs we'd ever need." Andrew Radcliffe says, as he pops open a Nuka-Cola. He's got his boots up on the confrence room table. Interesting. Radcliffe sounds confident and seems to have big plans already. We probably need to get into contact with a big trading center to get the best use out of those flyers.

"Hmm pretty good. Though I'd want to hold off on advertising until we have some robots ready to sell." You reply, looking at one of the designs. Hmm, a jade green on black background does seem like a good color design. "Or at least protect ourselves if the Judge decides to get ideas."
So the main color of our paint job would be black with some green thrown in?

So there is a furnace, we just have to repair it. And even more to loot.

However, before you can come to a decision, Andrew continues. "I know there of a few other places we could explore. As far as I know, the police station and the airport might have some stuff we can pick through. Of course, if you're willing to expand, I've got some ideas as well."
The airport is pretty dangerous, loads of Ghouls. He probably doesn't know about it because he isn't a native. We could have a few Eyebots scout the place.

So, there most difficult thing will probably be getting three new employees. Selling robots is easy, especially with our medical skills. Becoming famous could be done by taking Zeller out and visiting Bunker Hill. But people... Maybe someone from East City Downs or Goodneighbor? Trust would be a problem though.
Ugh, maybe we can send out a few scouts and find the USS Constitution? Successfully getting that ship into the harbor would not only get us a ship, but we might also recruit Ironsides.

Anyway, a plan... That are many numbers.
Maybe I should look at another plan first? Uhhh...
--[X] Medical Bot: Eyebot with Xin Industries Normal Paint Job, Regeneration Field (6 produced)
@Novus Ordo Mundi Can we do that? The Regeneration Field is listed as a torso part, and I'm not sure if an Eyebot counts as having a torso. Maybe it only counts as a head? But medical Eyebots are a thing...

Also, how does exploration work? If we vote some bots under [Outside], do they explore until we get locations and then get to vote what to do with them? Or will there be a vote on what they should do?

I'm allowing Eyebots to have head and some torso modifications, with no torso armor. If it can't be put on an Eyebot, it'll say so in the description. Obviously, legs and arms are out of the question, unless you can somehow find a Liberator to cross them with.

Also, how does exploration work? If we vote some bots under [Outside], do they explore until we get locations and then get to vote what to do with them? Or will there be a vote on what they should do?

The next voting section will involve where you want to send the robots. You can choose to have robots just explore on their own, or send them to specific locations. Also, you will be able to vote what Xin/Tian Ming, Andrew, and London are doing for the turn. Currently, I plan to have turns for a week.

I'm running some number right now and uh... Plan Medicalworks. has some problems. The cost of the base robots alone...

5 Assaultrons=Adhesive (50), Aluminum (85), Ceramic (60), Circuitry (40), Rubber (50)
12 Eyebots+Pod=Aluminum (108), Circuitry(72), Copper(36), Fiber Optics(36), Nuclear Material(36)

That is if we have to produce Eyebots with Pods. We have enough of everything except for Aluminum. We have 150 Aluminum but we would need 193.
I also think 12 Eyebots with Pods go over the Unit limit.

@Novus Ordo Mundi Do we need to build Eyebots with Pods? And the cost of 1 Eyebot+Pod would be 9 Aluminum, 6 Circuitry, 3 Copper, 3 Fiber Optics and 3 Nuclear Material, right?

On the upside, if we need a easy truck, I have a idea-

Take a Sentry bot, attach some reins to it, grab a cart or the body of a vehicle, attach the reins to the Sentry bot, presto, instant cart.

So with the cost of the base robot's not needing the pods. I've done the math on that front, but I'd love it if you double checked for me. It's always better to be better safe then sorry.

Ok, so I first wanted to build my plan after the example of Plan Medicalworks. but well... We can't do much because nearly every robot needs Aluminum. From the Protectron(11) with the lowest cost of all "proper" robots to the Sentry Bot (20). We only have 150 units of Aluminum. :/

But then I realized that this
(Note: The first 25 RoboBrains do not consume any Units, as their body is already built.)
means we can get 25 RoboBrains this turn! Now, we don't want to do that because once used we can't sell them anymore. Still, 10 are more than enough for our defense and to start looting stuff. So I decided to shift my plan so it focuses heavily on scouting and making stuff we can sell.

For clarity, every time I write Eyebot I mean one without a Pod. If I mean one with Pod I write Eyebot+Pod.

If you want to add Modifications, remember to put them here and which Robots they are for. (Note: The first 25 RoboBrains do not consume any Units, as their body is already built.)
--[X] RoboBrain-Merchant version(with Xin Industries Normal Paint Job) (1 produced)
--[X] RoboBrain (9 produced)
--[X] Eyebot -Medical version(Regeneration Field, Xin Industries Normal Paint Job) (8 produced)
--[X] Eyebot+Pod -Scout version(Enhanced Sensors) (4 produced)
--[X] Sentry Bot (1 produced)
--[X] Small Terminal (4 produced)
--[X] Desktop Terminal (1 produced)
--[X] Console Terminal (1 produced)
-[X] [Sales] 7 Eye Bots-Medical version, 4 Small Terminal, 1Desktop Terminal, 1 Console Terminal,
-[X] [Employment] You may appoint any amount of Robots to the services of Xin Industries. Once done, they can no longer be sold.
--[X] [Security] 1 Sentry Bot, 1 Eyebot -Medical version,
--[X] [Sales] 1 RoboBrain-Merchant version,
--[X] [Outside] 9 RoboBrain, 4 Eyebot+Pod -Scout version,

So, that leaves us with
  • 1 RoboBrain-Merchant
  • 9 RoboBrains for salvaging stuff and defenses
  • 1 Eye Bot-Medical version for us
  • 7 Eye Bots-Medical version to sell (People don't need the Pod if they only want them to get healed)
  • 4 Eyebot+Pod -Scout so we can explore stuff (the Pod so we can remotely monitor them)
  • 1 Sentry Bot if something attacks us
  • The realization that I need to make a spreadsheet to keep making plans for this quest

Also, a warning. My plan burns through most of our Circuitry. That and Aluminum is what we need more of.
I'm also not sure what kind of black sorcery is going on with the Xin Industries Normal Paint Job. Why does it need Steel!?

And a question for @Novus Ordo Mundi How effective is the Regeneration Field? I guess it's not as good as the Healing archway, because that thing is bigger and Zeta tech. So does the Regeneration Field heal radiation, crippled limbs, chem addictions, and sicknesses? Or only wounds?

I'm curious if it's worth it to develop a dedicated medic-bot that could do most of that or if the Regeneration Field already does that.

So with the cost of the base robot's not needing the pods. I've done the math on that front, but I'd love it if you double checked for me. It's always better to be better safe then sorry.
Where is the screaming rating on SV? It's the face beside the Insightful, right!?

But to be serious, from what I see it works out. Aluminum, Adhesive, and Circuitry get mostly used up but there would still be some left.
I really need to make a spreadsheet for this.

But then I realized that this

means we can get 25 RoboBrains this turn!

Actually if you look at the robo-brain it seems that the robo-brain body is simply consumed in making an operational robot. As Robo-brain body is listed as one of the materials used. It's why I only could afford a single robo-brain though of course if robo-brains truly were free. It would be nonsensical to not make all 25 as soon as possible.

Robobrain
Unit Count: 2
Current Amount of Robobrain Bodies: 25
NOTE: UNTIL SAFETY CHECKS ARE DONE, YOU CANNOT SELL ROBOBRAINS. YOU MAY BUILD THEM, AND USE THEM FOR YOUR OWN PURPOSES
  • Adhesive (9)
  • Aluminum (15)
  • Ceramic (11)
  • Circuitry (7)
  • Robobrain (1)
  • Rubber (9)

Now it's probably a different perspective on it. I'm probably wrong.
