You see a ring of white jade, lying in a silk bed.
You also see other items nearby. Statues of jade dragons. Standards of dynasties long gone. Dings of different shapes and sizes. They are a striking difference from the computers and Mr. Handies that are around them. Neon signs lie along the walls, as a further separation between the historic and the modern.
Two men are arguing about something. One of them is pointing at what are obviously Chinese artifacts. No, not specifically the artifacts. The ring in particular. You don't know why, but he obviously is very animated. The other man simply shakes his head. He's refusing. Obviously, he doesn't agree. He doesn't seem to think the ring is that important. It's just another artifact. To sell? Maybe, but you can't tell what they're saying.
Then the first man punches the other, smaller man. The smaller man's head bounces off a steel table, before his body hits the floor. The other man snaps out of his anger. He is obviously apologetic, before checking on his friend. But you can see the blood seeping from the body on the floor. He's dead, a victim of a moment of rage.
You feel something in your left ring finger. Something that wasn't there before. It is the ring of white jade, with the etching of a dragon along its width. It's worth is determined by your desires. And you have just the will to bring your desires into the world.

[Well now, this is interesting.] Tian Ming says, as she goes to work on the storage room terminal. You had taken the ring, and were now looking at it as it rests upon your left ring finger. [It seems that Neon Pete's was smuggling stuff on the side for a local museum. Name's not given. Must have been to hide who they were.]
"Smuggling stuff?" You ask. You think back to your dream from last night. That does put some context on the matter. "I'd assume getting stuff for the museum to display?"
[Actually, no. Smuggling stuff out of the museum. Apparently the government wanted these Chinese artifacts destroyed. Something about it being un-American and corrupting the youth. You know, the usual.] That last sentence dripped of venom and bitterness as it left Tian Ming's vocal processors. [So, these two guys decided to help them out, in exchange for money… and space in a Vault? Doesn't say which one. Let's check the next entry… Uh oh.]
"Let me guess. One of them killed the other."
For a moment, Tian Ming is silent. Then finally. [...you saw that in your dreams, didn't you?]
"Uh… yeah?" You say. "I've been having some rather vivid dreams lately." And to be honest, it's been starting to worry you. Oh, they've been very helpful. But you never had these dreams until recently. And it's only been this week that you've actually been able to understand them. But what are you going to do about it. Stay awake forever? That's not feasible and not healthy to even try. "What does the terminal say?"
[It seems greed got the better of one of the men. The owner of the terminal wanted to sell the ring to some rich man. Louie - that was the other guy - refused and said… something that pushed his button. Doesn't say what. But it caused the owner to punch his friend. Accidently killed him. Louie panicked, and decided to take the artifacts and split. Only thing he left was the ring. Probably didn't get very far. Entry's timestamped an hour before the Great War.]
You sigh, disappointed that it ended up like that. Sure, it was over two hundred years ago. But you still feel bad about the whole thing. Obviously, he removed his friend's body before he left. You didn't see it coming in, and none of the RoboBrains mentioned it, though you're not sure you should trust their judgment right now.
[Empress, if I may ask, did you feel any different when you put the ring on?]
"Nothing that I've noticed." You say. And it's the truth. Other than noticing that it's a rather nice ring, you don't feel anything different. Then, to add a little levity, you add "I'm pretty sure that I'm not going to become like Gollum."
Ming processed this. [If you start saying "my precious", I will make sure that ring ends up in the nearest volcano.] You giggle a little at this, because she totally would do it. Ming always did enjoy reading a good fantasy. [But honestly, if you do feel any effects, let me know.]
"I will." You reply. Obviously it's important. Why would you dream of it otherwise? But you don't know exactly why. Maybe you'll find out. "Were there any business contacts?"
[Why yes! All of last month's shipments are on here!] Ming scrolls through the contacts. [Lots of bars. Well, that'll make Johnny happy.]
Soon enough, Ming's gone through the contents of the terminal. Nothing special, other than the whole smuggling business and the contacts. At the very least, you can look at the areas and see if there is anything to scavenge.
As you leave, you can't help but look at your ring again. You can't help yourself when you look at it.
You have to do it.
It demands it.
And you must do what must be done.
"My… ppppreccccccioussss."
[Empress. Volcano.]
The two of you just laugh as you leave the ruins of Neon Pete's.
