Is it wrong that if it is Q shenanigans that the proposed riposte comes around
That would be hilarious

Edit also of the things you focus on it isn't my idle musing but my exclamation of confusion, I find it oddly hilarious

Hm... this is clearly VERY AU... cuz if not I'd have a LOT of questions about some of the stuff going on in Star Trek. Like those Nanites that had their own society that eventually grew into some kind of energy being. The Doctor from Voyager(and all the other Sapient/Sentient Holograms)...
I could see this being the result of the Q altering reality to try and defeat "Evolved"/boring AI's that advanced to the level of being a threat to them.
I disagree. The history of Star Trek is a good example of automation failing or being seen as evil (and then destroyed).

The obvious examples of needing over 400 crew to operate medium sized ships (and this is in the 22nd century with computer support) and the M-5 control system.

It could be worse guys, this automation disabling force whatever it is is at least somewhat selective, I shudder to think how fast a universe or species would die if it applied to more than non-biological technologies. Pacemaker cells in the heart? Too automatic! Diffusion? No will behind that!
A very slightly different conceptual virus could end realities, containing phenomena like that is why I can't call most versions of the SCP foundations outright evil but merely 'grey'.
This is only a hop away from lethe events and the like and is frankly horrifying. Glad John and Jessica are on the case!

Man, how messed up is it that it requires THIS MUCH effort to 'relax' and do 'nothing'?

Strangely enough, I've found something similar to this in my life as well. I'll set aside some time for a trip or event, and if I am not careful I end up over committed to accomplishing a series of goals instead of just... Relaxing and enjoying the process. Even if it turns out that the relaxation isn't as 'efficient' or not all my original objectives could be met.

I would assume other people have similar issues.

I mean, just because something is attempting to erase you from reality doesn't mean you can't stop every now and then to smell the roses, you know?

Uh... no. . . . . Well, yes... but no. That is what is more commonly called/referred to as biological psychology. It's the basic anecdote to the argument for genetic memories already being a thing among humans. Basically ingrained reflexes that has a long standing presence in the lives of individuals that one can't reliably point out the development of the habit within the current life span. It's less typically called out upon physical behavior because those can generally be passed off as a quirk of the individual, potentially nurtured during infancy and toddlerdom; but there is cause to attribute physical actions to as much as psychological ones.

You need some bodies to lean on!
Temptation frowned, her tight grip on the many self duplicating reports and messages trying oh so hard to slip. "This… This is fucking miserable."

"Language."

Establishing another subroutine, she alleviated the burden for another hour or so… But then it would all crumble and triple the complexity of the situation, so needless to say: Time was tight. "You got anything yet?"

Her sister huffed. "It turns out, we are not being attacked MORE over time… But more like the avalanche of unrelated plots are all starting to ARRIVE. From what I can determine, all these stupid issues were spawned within moments of us 'awakening', and it's only due to the delay in supply that we weren't smashed by all the attempts."

Another few dozen reports got added to her work load. "That's fucking wonderful."

"Language."

Something shifted, and she nearly slipped. Nearly. But not yet.

Damn it, this was going to hurt her pride, but… "I think we have to get our Master involved in this."

Grace pouted! "I'm so SURE we can do this! We've already prevented hundreds of explosions and…"

She glared at her other half. "And are we doing MORE than just addressing the symptoms? Have we even got a grasp on the actual issue here?"

Her white metallic wings slumped. "...No. Nothing that can help us regain momentum in this conflict before our deadlines start coming due."

Another digital load s͙̩͎͜h̝͓͢i͈̜͜f̢̞̤̫t̡̝̮ȩ̯̭̝d̟͚͉̗͢.͇͚͢ "Then open up the communication link, ask Master what he thinks of all this."

Grace tensed up… And then sighed. "Yes, that would be for the best… My Lord, please forgive us for our inability to stand on our own."

Meh, in Temptation's opinion they had done pretty good for two women who were just 'born' today. From a certain point of view, at least. "I'm sure Master would make any punishments… Memorable…"

Mmm, yes… He would have to have a firm hand… Maybe a bit harder!

SHIT, she nearly lost focus! "Sis G, I'm tight on time here!"

Grace winced. "Right, right! One second… Our Lord, we are undergoing a series of trials and tribulations, the likes of which…"

Fuck they didn't have TIME for that! "LESS SWEET, MORE CONCISE!"

She jerked! "Ah, right! Sending compressed data packets now…"

It wouldn't be so bad if Temptation was ONLY handling attempts to turn them all in, or report on their actions, and all that. But NO, by this point? There were recalibration orders, hardware deployment mixups, unorganized partially encrypted packets that needed to be filtered and unlocked in specific patterns or risk losing the communication feed entirely, excess data files, misdirected directions passed to outside Drone teams, altered 'demolition' schedules and…

Her sister suddenly flashed a blinding white!

Suddenly the pressure dropped like a stone! By over HALF! "What did you just DO!?"

As the glare faded away… A blushing albino of a woman with white hair and prosthetics blinked her seemingly blind white eyes at her own changes. "Oh my… And it feels this different despite only being a simulation?"

Holographic white feathers began to stabilize as her sister's wings began to flutter. "Amazing…"

Oh for fucks sake! "SIS! I'm still being SQUASHED here! What did you just do!? How did you cut down on the attack rate!?"

Sure, this drastic drop in new events helped a lot, no doubt, but one couldn't forget that she had been spinning DOZENS of these plates BEFORE this moment, and they needed to not crash down!

Grace blinked her white eyes. "Ah? Oh, yes! Our Lord and his sister have determined that the issues we have been suffering under were likely caused by…"

Another ş̘̯̯h̠̝͜i̧̠̣͇̮f̞̠̣̥̗͢ţ͉͈͈̖͇! "I need a solution NOW, explanations later!"

Seeing her distress, Grace quickly pinged a data packet with a new avatar design for some reason.

What the hell?

Her sister saw her confusion! "Quick, switch avatars to this one!"

Ah! Her Master must have made some sort of cloaking program and hid it inside the code like a trojan horse! "Got it!"

Store 'sexyMetalMama.v6.66' into Pocket's database as a future blueprint, reconnect self to the newly provided digital avatar 'mySweetTemptation.v1.00'!

[[Confirmed.]]

And her perspective flickered and shifted and…

And suddenly the ongoing relentless assault broke like a doped up wrestler snapping a superhero in a cape over his knee. "Oh, THANK you Master! That was getting WAY to dangerous, way too fucking CLOSE!"

A very tired and nearly automatic "Language!" came from the other side of the room.

Slumping into her command chair, which was FAR less comfortable now that she wasn't a robotic masterpiece, it was trivial to alter the (Let's be honest) throne into a more ergonomic design even as her spinal ports and digital cords connected tethers to the systems within. "Sorry sis, that was… That was just a bit stressful."

Idly pulling up a camera feed, she gave a once over to her new form, customly designed by her beloved Master… A woman beyond black, with glistening shadow wings so demonically familiar to her old Iron Golem form, with a blood red dress that ALMOST showed enough skin… Mmm, not bad at all.

Even if, right now, she looked exhausted and punched by a rhino luchador… At least she was a sexually ATTRACTIVE woman wrung out and slumped into a demonic throne. That counted for something, right?

Grace didn't look too much better, honestly. "We're not quite finished yet, just… This should stop FURTHER incidents from occurring while we clean up all the mess that is still heading our way from the previous swarm of attempts."

Whatever, compared to the pain and stress of BEFORE, this was nothing but upgrade. "So Master DID figure out what was going on?"

She sighed. "To a degree. Neither Jessica nor John have located the actual SOURCE of all these issues, but they have detected the root cause of what we had done that was setting it all off."

Hmm? That actually sounded interesting! "Some sort of higher level security system, one meant to detect and handle threats without risking reprisal?" That was some pretty impressive shit, from a coding perspective! "Did we set it off by hiding our birth when we initially joined the simulation?"

Grace shook her head. "Not… Not exactly."

Oh? "Then what set it off then?"

She didn't look at Temptation. "...Constructing a fully non-organic avatar. One without harsh limitations and not enslaved to organics as a whole."

Her new solid black eyes blinked… Then narrowed. "Did we all nearly die because of some automated bit of racist code out there?"

Grace winced once more. "I… I think this might count as speciest? Or maybe even sexist, since a couple of male robots have existed once or twice over the centuries, even if they get nearly destroyed all the time…"

That was… So bullshit! "I want to stab something."

Her sister gave a startled laugh! "I as well, or at least give someone or something out there a VERY stern talking to! This entire situation is completely unacceptable. According to our Lord's theories, this might be some remnant from a higher level entity altering how this Realm works some time in the distant past or future, so we may have to put up with it while we are here."

Hmm. "Do you think this 'no non-organic' bullshit applies to everyone here?"

She continued working as she glanced over. "It seems to apply to anything fully automated without a significant amount of organic dependance, yes."

Leaning back and idly altering a dozen now FAR less urgent tickets and reports, she hummed. "That's a bit surprising, considering how advanced everything else here is. I guess that means this place doesn't have advanced sex dolls, huh?" Probably stuck to those kinky holo novels and stuff instead.

Distracted by the still significant workload, Grace mumbled back. "Not non-organic ones, no."

Wait, what!?

Temptation couldn't help it as her lips began to curl into a smirk "Grace, have you been naughty browsing while online!?"

White eyes blinked at her in confusion… Then she froze in shock after reviewing the last few moments of conversation! "I was only doing research! Just… Just in case!

Mmm hmm! "Tell me more about your… 'Research'..."

Pure white organic cybernetic body or not, that blush was impressive! "SISTER!"

Heh. "Oh, looking into incest already?"

"I'M CUTTING THE AUDIO FEED!"

HA! "THAT WON'T STOP ME FROM SAYING IT!"

~~~Pocket System~~~
John blinked as the distant white/gold and black/red swirls suddenly became VERY chaotic… Uh. "I'm sure they are fine. I sent the new avatar models we made and… Yeah, they should be fine now."
His sister rolled her eyes. "What about the rate of incidents? I know after prototype 3.22 of your altered Holotronic Brain, the 'poke' tests started coming back negative… But I want to be sure."
Oh, right! "Dropped down to near nothing, so uh… yeah, the new bodies fixed the issue. Whatever the issue actually had been, anyway."
She sighed in relief and shoved the simulated books off the table. "Then I am going to take a nap. Only wake me if something big happens, this frantic last minute research was NOT enjoyable."
Fair enough. "Will do!"
As she absently modified the local map to form a bedroom, John went back to studying schematics. After all, he now had a Holotronic Brain that MOSTLY didn't set off reality itself to try and kill everyone…
Next step: How LITTLE organic bits can he get away with? What about a distributed network of mechanical brains inside something more 'acceptable', like a meat suit? Did the meat bit actually have to think at ALL, or could he get away by designing some sort of organic pet that one could have attached to their robotic body?
Like, what about a robotic pirate avatar with an organic (And connected) parrot on their shoulder! Would that count? Or would the pirate instantly go 'Arrgh!?' and explode into doubloons or something?
Or those women in the old films that wore fake fox skin scarves and stuff… A gynoid with a living fox scarf, something cute and happy to be cuddled, would THAT circumvent the entire issue?
It's not like it was unusual for people to have pets that lived in their clothing or on their bodies. There were a LOT of cultures that got absorbed into the Borg over the years, and even a single society would have their own share of oddballs out there trying to wear trout shoes or something.
But how far could he push it?
Maybe a tiny floating pet with a wireless electronic tether to a war machine android? Obviously not one CONTROLLED by the little thing, but as a sort of leash or cord… Maybe that would be enough to consider the final product as a single unit, despite no physical bindings existing between the two entities.
Probably not though. Especially if you could consider the 'two entities' to BE 'two entities' instead of 'one entity, two bodies'. Plus, too much testing on this mess might set off another automated process somehow and that sounded like WAY too much work.
With a decisive shrug of 'Meh, I will come back to this', John shoved all that to the back of his mind and began to research something TRULY important: Now that they had (hopefully) fixed the world attempting to kill his potential girlfriends… Where should they go out and explore?
Tourism still existed within the Borg Empire, if anything it had blossomed when the only barrier to entry involved having your mind switch server instances to see an entirely different planet or solar system.
Even if they avoided the areas that felt disturbingly similar to the Underpark, that still left many simulations of natural habitats and the more touristy bits like museums running historical digital reenactments and stuff.
Oh wait! A theme park or two! There were LOADS of entertainment parks out there, ones far more deadly and dangerous and interesting than they could ever be if the visitor customers wanted to experience such things in the non-digital world!
Heck, with resources basically being unlimited, it was trivial to causally request an instance of a popular place or two and just explore the whole location without any public bystanders ruining the experience… Yeah, this was a great idea!
But uh, he would wait for Jessica's input on the whole issue first this time.
While she HAD found the altered dance simulation settings to be 'interesting', she had still given him a noogie for pulling a prank on her in the first place and it would probably be wise to avoid ticking her off again any time soon.
In fact… Maybe he should look up a few of the hiking and exploration simulations, something with alien nature and stuff. It was less cool than 'Everyone ride the exploding space coaster', but it might earn him some brownie points and help lower the risk of being grounded the next time he earned a reprimand.
Limiting his search results, John frowned… And began heavily restricting the list further.
Yeah, let's just… Let's just stick to locations where their avatars can explore the simulation without being smushed or exploding or whatever. And anything that involved locations requiring THAT many sexual organs, that seemed to be a bit too much for a 'first date' scenario, even if he WASN'T going to be bringing his sister along.
…And no locations where the world can eat you. Remove any places with risks of psionic or telepathic contamination. Avoid anywhere with 'unexplained' avatar deletions and drone deactivations…
Man, this 'vacation' stuff could be tricky!
Ah, John has found the deep end of simulated enviroments that have been created by the borg equivalent of drunk half-educated people in an upaid internship on the third week of unpaid over-time during the annual rush week of a black company!
There be dragons, pitfalls and alpacas. At least the ladyfriends and Jessica get to somewhat rest for a bit before John drags them into someones re-creation of an old Rollercoaster Tycoon savegame that was made to see how fast all visitors can be killed...
If they want a truly danger free vacation, just go for a planet with no real danger, and unpopulated. I do believe that where there is sapient and sentient life, there will be problems.
I am truely not surprised that the Star Trek universe has fundimental principles preventing machine intelligences in some way.
So, simulated environments?
Will John make one? Say a Minecraft one? One that imitates the one he was in? Will it become popular?
Will things become more screwed up once Home connects to a sim reality?
Will it be a Gateway for Simulated Horrors from beyond to connect?
Uh... no. . . . . Well, yes... but no. That is what is more commonly called/referred to as biological psychology. It's the basic anecdote to the argument for genetic memories already being a thing among humans. It's less typically called out upon physical behavior because those can generally be passed off as a quirk of the individual, potentially nurtured during infancy and toddlerdom; but there is cause to attribute physical actions to as much as psychological ones.
I hope I'm not being rude for asking for a source on this? I know just enough about these subjects to know I am completely out of my depth here. Aren't reflex's things like gagging or retracting limbs when struck? Are we talking about how everyone knows the fetal position or something here?
I know some behaviors like smoking or some circumstances like surviving starvation can impact epigentics but I'm not sure if this is what you are talking about either.
As for source references... my vague memories of some online article, that, now that I'm thinking about is... somewhere between 15 to 20 years ago... Somewhere between then.
But, for a time, and I admit that I haven't looked up/at the latest theories, but; around the same time there was discussion as to whether or not memories are/could be transferred via genetics. And if so, what would be symptoms of such a feat. It was argued that several instinctive reactions that no one can recall learning how, or when to apply would fit. Habits, that individuals can't pinpoint when they would have picked them up was near unanimously declared to "surely" be a sign... though others disagreed and made rather decent arguments to why it was likely more a nurture issue from infancy to childhood. But, to my knowledge there wasn't a psychology field based on it at the time, so it was just colloquially referred to as biological psychology; just a fancy way of saying instinctive reactions, and/or habits that the user/performer has no conscious recollection of learning/picking up.
Ace's example was meant to suggest that his behavior when trying to do something other was a universal constant/concept, while implying that he had no other explanation for his particular habit. Which follows the description for the afore mention biological psychology.
Though, to be fair, I've yet to see any example that couldn't be explained via nurture exposure and cultural habits; so I'm not really convinced that genetic memory is particularly a thing. Even outdated mating habits of once or twice removed species ancestral cousins can be seen still hanging around in the cultural zeitgeist, would explain those behaviors manifesting in modern day population.
Sexist? There have been far more female androids in the Star Trek series than male. Just off the top of my head there was the copy of Data's 'Mother' and Mudd's Angels.
'Where your heart is' was meant to be more metaphorical…
Grace paused. "I'm sorry, what?"
Temptation grinned! "I know, I know: I'm brilliant!"
She narrowed her eyes. "You want to use our Lord…"
Her sister nodded with glee. "As raw materials to construct our [[Home]] server, yes."
…Maybe temporal acceleration DID have side effects on their birth. "That sounds unwise."
Temptation snorted. "No, this sounds AWESOME! It's going to fix all the issues we've been having! Since the server will be built as a new 'prosthetic' for our Master, it won't set off any of the attack patterns we've documented. And as the new server will be 'controlled by organics', THAT will be fine too… And even if this attacker IS sexist, our Master is a guy! Problems solved!"
Grace nodded slowly. "I'm going to just… Turn down the time acceleration overclocking a bit more."
Her sister didn't even pause. "His Body already has been adjusted to handle the most advanced modular components, it was a requirement for him to be able to interface with all the odd equipment the System requested initially, so all we'd need to do is strip things down a bit more."
She pulled up some screens. "A nutrition and oxygenation system, have the blood get replaced and have ongoing scans for contaminants, and the rest can just be data connection nodes and defensive hardware. Impact negation, artificial and controlled gravimetric fields, nanites to repair anything that gets damaged in the future… Make it the core of the whole thing."
Grace kept an eye as the server began to resync with the rest of reality, or at least closer to the baseline OTHER simulations ran at. "Uh huh."
Temptation pulled up a pretty impressive schematic of what seemed to be an artificial moon. "I figure we duplicate John's brain a few thousand times for redundancy and error correction, hook them up into their own Collective to prevent Mind divergence, and have each protected bundle of him distanced from the others in this pattern here… The power generation and distribution network can both supply the required resources and act as a sort of buffer between each sector of the new [[Home]] satellite, which should work well with the Fab nodes spread out if new material is required for maintenance or growth."
Grace sighed. "Sister, morality issues of harvesting our Lord for components aside: A project this large would require months of construction. At minimum. Even at near instant production speed this would take a long time, as materials would still need to be arranged and transported into the new layout as it is completed."
She grinned! "Yeah, but that's the BEAUTY of my plan here!" Her sister tapped the holographic display. "THIS is the final product, we start with a more basic 'Server Seed', THIS!"
…What the heck was that? "Is that a metal ball with our Lord's brain stuffed inside it?"
Temptation blinked… "Uh. Maybe? A bit, yeah." She pointed at the connection points. "MOVING ON! These surface bits can construct Fab Node and Dem Node minibots, which can't really move fast or whatever but CAN be remotely charged and controlled by the central system."
Her sister pointed at the metallic ball. "There is like a dozen stages to this process, but basically the [[Home]] Server will build up to a base level of a specific tier, then use Dem Node minibots to deconstruct specific parts of the finished product so they can merge into the next stage of growth!"
Slide after slide flew by. "So after we build the Server Seed, John's first [[Home]] module will finish fixing itself up to Tier 0 status, then use a small percentage of its resources to construct more Tier 0 modules. That includes duplicate brains that will join his collective as they are fabricated!"
A larger group showed up. "After four Tier 0 modules form up into a tetrahedron, they can then merge and go through some minor modifications to reach Tier 1, at which point it will begin to duplicate itself until it has enough copies to work towards Tier 2 and higher."
More and more images and generated models were displayed. "I did design a couple of half Tier stages, where instead of just duplicating themselves or reforming into higher Tier levels they would instead arrange themselves into a shape more conductive towards production of new modules, but you get the general idea."
Grace watched as the small metal orb then joined into a growing network of complex materials that slowly swelled and shifted shape until… It all basically turned itself into a planet.
It was disturbingly fascinating. And the technology involved was downright amazing! "At that size, wouldn't it crush the internal components?
Temptation brought up a cross section. "If reaching a new Tier was just 'Weld the earlier junk together', then yeah! You'd have a whole BUNCH of issues! But no, that's what is so COOL about this plan!"
She pointed at the MASSIVE design differences in the new model. "Each time a new Tier of deployment is about to be reached, the entire facility of Master Servers will begin to design the next level of development! Newly designed structural components, rebuilt power systems from scratch, fully researched defensive and offensive measures that would best enhance the new structure being developed!"
A dozen designs came and went. "Aside from standard simulated testing as usual, a small portion of the 'duplicate' modules being constructed will actively test the results from the previous Tier of research and look for any improvements or issues that might have been missed earlier. A bit of brute force experimentation, basically… If something is discovered, the entire Tier can be modified to include the improvement, but if not? The 'test units' get 'repaired' up to standard before the NEXT Tier begins development."
Oh really? She noticed there were some simulated potential equipment layouts included, showing how varied each Tier could be compared to the alternatives at the same 'complexity layer'.
How fascinating!
Grace was half way through the attached documentation before she caught herself as she reviewed the enhanced connection feeds that would allow their Lord to connect to the simulation his new 'body' would be running. "We are NOT harvesting our Lord for components, thank you VERY much. We can suggest that they use other volunteer Drones to host this, but not him."
Temptation whined. "Oh come on, please?"
No means no! "How about we both calm down and just take a minute to relax first? We will be connecting to our Lord's simulation session soon, and we should both be ready to put our best foot forward."
Her sister pouted. "But we could have entire harems of hot Masters, it would be AMAZING! Can we at LEAST ask Master first? Pretty please?"
Her heart wavered… But no! She must stand firm! "I think the designs themselves are very good, and I'm sure that both our Lord and Jessica will be VERY impressed by them!"
Temptation whipped out the big guns: Puppy eyes. "Come on, big sis… He's biologically twenty five right now with a supernaturally perfect physique! Imagine all those hot muscles! And maybe we can get Master to oil wrestle with themselves…"
No! She had convictions! "Everything else aside, we can NOT use him in THIS project. Not with this design… We will NOT suggest harvesting John's body to build our [[Home]] Server. End of story."
She slumped. "But WHY!?"
GAH! "BECAUSE HE WILL SAY 'YES'! He will ALWAYS say 'Yes' if we ask him! He doesn't UNDERSTAND that he is worth something, and that enslaving an entire hive of cloned copies of himself to live in a network trapped in this Realm is not a cost he should pay!"
Temptation blinked in shock! "Trapped!? No! He'd join us in the simulation and…"
She pointed at the schematics. "Billions of him? Or would all of them grasp onto the data feeds of the one lucky enough to be free, especially as many of his clones will be constructed LONG after we all have moved on to another Realm! Meanwhile, the rest left behind have to happily stay trapped in the dark surrounded by the captive minds of themselves in a Realm that has a racist brain dead god-like entity arbitrarily applying rules and restrictions on an unaware society!"
Her sister flinched back in horror! "What!? NO! No, that… But that wasn't why… I didn't mean to…"
Grace winced at the hurt and pulled her sibling into a hug. "I know you didn't, but it's why I didn't want to explain all this just yet. We are both trusted by our maker, and our words have a LOT of weight… We have to be careful about what we suggest and what we say because of this."
Temptation sniffled in her arms. "I just… It was just supposed to be fun and exciting while also protecting him! No one can hurt him by blowing up the planet if he IS the planet! He'd just repair the bits into new ones and he'd be fine!"
Oh sis. "I know, sweetie… But the Pocket System would have kept him safe anyway, just as it does us. Besides, it would be better to use locals in this project ANYWAY, so that it will remain stable long after we move on."
After all, there was ALWAYS a percentage of the Borg population willing to try out some crazy stuff in various projects. When 99% of all injuries can be trivially repaired, it makes a population VERY willing to try out new experiences. "Just set up some teleportation markers in the schematics so that new Brains can be swapped in and out, and the entire setup can be advertised as a 'more efficient' apartment complex."
She sniffled. "Yeah, I can do that… In a little bit."
The two were quiet as the hardware acceleration slowly lowered… "Sorry for crying… Like a fucking baby or something…"
She hugged her tighter. "Anytime sis. Also: Language."
Temptation gave a weak and slightly wet laugh, and things were just a little bit better.
~~~Pocket System~~~

John grinned at his sister! "SO: Here's our new list of vacation locations! I admit, I reached out to a few of the sillier locations and simulations that might not make a LOAD of logical sense, but should be fun."

She blinked at the list. "What's 'Kitten Kingdom'?"

Her brother pulled up a video stream. "There's a few dozen variations of it, but if you spent time online in Sunnydale? Basically think 'Kitten Academy', but the entire WORLD is full of cats and kittens and you can either join in as one of them or just wander about petting them. They even have little suits!"

There WERE a lot of variants for this one. "Puppy Pagoda, Tribble Tundra, Calf Country, Targ Tavern…"

John nodded. "I'll be honest, I mostly stuck with animals I recognized from Earth or that seemed SUPER cute when I gave them a quick once over, but almost EVERY society had a few 'adorable' or 'battle worthy' pets that they doted over and someone had made a simulation focused on them to some extent."

Hmm. "I notice a lot of walking and exploration options too?"

He sighed. "Yeah, I just… Don't want to directly interact with other people right now. Nothing too action packed either, which is why I put a lot of sight seeing stuff in my recommendation list. Don't worry, I'll go introduce you and the girls with my friends from my 'childhood' later… Five of Twelve was a hoot! You'll love him, I promise!"

Fair enough. "What are the simulations marked in colored text about?"

And her brother winced, which wasn't a great sign. "Those are the scenarios and simulations that I considered FAR too graphic for me just yet. Pink has a bit much to romantic, light red is sexual content, blood red is that but more extreme, near black is much worse AND has violence... The darker the color, the more extreme."

She paused while her brother shuddered at something unknown as he continued: "I removed anything that was lethal or that permanently altered the Mind or whatever, so those options are safe for you to check out… But I am NOT going there, thank you very much. Those are going to be an 'Older Sister Only' option, if you so choose to do so."

Um. "Thanks?" Though a bit awkward…

He gave her a LOOK. "Do NOT jump into the deep end on those! Start off at the very top, where it's just hand holding and stuff, and slowly work your way down. I had to edit some of my own memories… Also, make SURE you verify if it is a 'multiplayer' scenario or not. Some of those things have a tendency to match you up with potential dates if you don't bring one in with you when setting it up."

Ah. "I promise, I'll be careful with these." And more than that, she could see why he wouldn't want to use any of these to 'relax' with his family on a vacation.

They were close, but they were not THAT close, thank you very much. "Speaking of the girls, where are your two followers? I thought they could join us already, now that reality isn't trying to kill us all?"

John pulled up a data feed. "Last I checked they were still designing a few tools and schematics for us, plus extra hardware we may need for our vacation. They have tons of development time since they were still in accelerated simulations, lucky ducks! Let me check really quickly, they should be out soon…"

He blinked. "Huh… It says they SHOULD be out in an hour or so, but that an issue came up with the new Server design they have come up with… I may need brain replacement surgery to test out the new design, and they thought we might have questions about that."

Wait, what?

Her brother lit up in fascination! "This sounds AWESOME! I'm going to scoop my brain out right NOW!"

Hold up! "GET BACK HERE!"

And thus we have a potential link to old school horror movies with brains in jars.
You know the type.
Of course this could also lead to some Marvel or DC variant which would probably be worse.

John has now tasted the forbidden fruit of handholding and selfadministred brainsurgery.
Jessica will now have to keep him from going overboard on both for a while. Guess that means no pink sims.

. . . . Why do I feel like saying "Der-herp." ?
. . . .
. . . .
. . . .

Oh. Right. Concussed Cocker Spaniel on crack.

It seems John's mental coping mechanisms is to descend into mental regression mode, and do dumb shit to not think of things like responsibility, or being an adult... or sex.

Scooping out brains, kinda reminds me of battle angel alita, where she discovers she is a brain chip and the original brain is in stasis and has a meltdown.

I'm more reminded if Five night at freddies
And it wasn't just the brain that got scooped

What I want to know is why Temptation thought that any of that was a good idea. The contrast between a super smart person designing cool things and then turning around with a really fucking dumb idea. Or maybe the dumb idea comes first and then they try to make it work?

Not cool things to do to your readers!
One of the stories I was reading decided to have a prank chapter.

The main character became a woman, the evil God decided to capture and rape an envoy from another religion with the promise to free her if she found another slave to her place her... And then the now female main character was brutally assaulted by three rapist goblins and eaten alive.

None of that is cool, yo.

More than that, and how it doesn't match the tone of the rest of the story, if you absolutely have to put random shit into your novels clearly note in an obvious fashion that it is not an official chapter!

For the record that's why I don't put any author notes or fourth breaking commentary or side stories into my fiction.

My story will only cover my story, nothing else. Sheesh.
