Oglethorpe's dream: A Colony of Georgia quest

Glad to see this story is back. And wow, the turn just took a huge nosedive into violence. Also, damn foreign intervention happened a lot faster then otl, where George Washington had to pull off miracles. Either way, we just have to hold until Britain marshals its Empire for total war. Still if nothing else, France and Spain will go bankrupt first then Britain.

I don't know, 350 militia is a bit tight between our cities and hunting SOL. I hope we can get more but that is up to dice.
Perhaps just send 50 or maybe send newly recruited from the homeless, they would at least have the determination to kick the rebel ass for support SoL from Savannah needs help option.
Just change it enough so we can at least send some troops before Franklin ends up dead.

Fair enough. @RookDeSuit a unit of 50 militia is being sent to help Franklin.

Something about caring for these people so harmed so as to assure their wellbeing and ability to provide for themselves speaks to me.

Truly, we are a government for the people.

Actually since Virginia went Loyalist George Washington is on the British side I haven't brought it up but he's actually Cheif General of the Province of Virginia's Armed Forces.

Hopefully, the British Generals in charge will take his advice under consideration, considering his previous position in the French and Indian war.

--[x] It is clear the SOL are demons with their devious crime of setting thousands of homes aflame. The militia will mobilize in full to hunt SOL. The colony will invite/request British presence for detecting these monsters. A unit of 50 militia will be dispatched to assist Governor Franklin.
-[x] Savannah needs help
--[x] The people will be helped as the government exists to help the people. They will be offered many choices, but the primary options are enrollment in militia, government sponsored work (be it construction or errands), or referral to the trade industry. The standard free hot meal and bunk is of course provided for this period.
-[x] Capitol Buildings
--[x] Masonry Buildings in style similar to home country for the permanent seat of government. Budget would be set at a restrained level, allowing starting and completion of limited number (~5) of buildings until situation improves.
--[x] Focus on a handful of buildings to centralize government functions while allowing easy militia patrol.
-[x] Papers: It is shameful of the SOL to attack innocents and destroy livelihoods. The whole of western world shall know of their crimes. The government will fund mass publication of the murder of innocents and the burning of homes across all printing presses home and aboard.
-[x] Fund rising: It isn't a dishonor to beg for people under your care, impress the old country (including non-British) social circles with goal of acquiring funds and donations for the rebuilding of Georgia.

December, 1775 to May, 1776
Sons of Liberty:
The Constabulary and Militia hunt the Sons of Liberty down with vicious glee. The organizations fate is doomed when His Majesty's Government dispatches members of their unofficial secret police to help us eliminate the S.O.L. At the beginning of May their are no more Sons of Liberty left in Georgia.

Jobs, Jobs, Jobs:
The program to get the people of Savannah work has gone off as a smashing and while some have opted to take the other two routes the militia is the real winner by the end of May we have 700 men in the Colonial Militia.

Newspaper and Charity:
The two combined forces of official governmental begging and guilt tripping via newspaper is a potent source. By the end of May each family has been given around twenty pounds Stirling.

Capitol News:
100 more people move to the future Capitol (yet to be named) and groundwork is laid on the government buildings. The new residents have built their homes in the typical local style. Though out of respect for the renaissance community they have moved to the other side of the river.

War at Stalemate:
After the last six hectic months the various powers of the war are resting and consolidating their strength.

Nice to see everybody's taking a break, say what the nearest Rebel forces or territory was thinking of relieving pressure on other fronts for Britain.
Is 700 man is a large amount I don't mind using most of those on lightning raids to seize Rebel stocks like their guns and gunpowder since we're underequipped right?

The Nearest Front is technically the Caribbean but our soldiers would refuse to go there point blank what with the region commonly giving soldiers malaria. The next closest front is the Pennsylvania-New Jersey front.

I forgot to answer but 700 is not a high amount for other colonies we just can't field as many soldiers because we're the youngest and least populated. For example Virginia has produced 1,500 troops and they haven't even gone on total war footing or enacted conscription. Now consider Georgia and the fact that we have a population between 4,500 and 5,000.

Why do we have the lowest population numbers?

Georgia is the youngest colony to be formed. It's in the South which is hot, and humid which is a big change to England, cold and rainy. We also border Florida which is a Spanish colony, and nobody wants to live at the border of a hostile neighbor.

June, 1776 to Navember, 1776
The Colonial Congress and Advisory Committee have convened once more this June to discus what direction Georgia will take the next six months. The government has one mandatory issue they must deal with.

My Money, My Property!:
A complicated case has come before the government in where a dissatisfied wife is protesting coverture. The policy of coverture has been part of common law in England throughout the middle ages since the reign of King Henry ii. The basic principle of the law is that a husband and wife are one being body and soul. But this also comes with the understanding that the husband is lord and master in all manners. A single women can own property and make contracts in her own name and generally has all the personal and commercial rights that a man has if not the political rights.
Married woman on the other hand legally ceased to exist or were subsumed into their husband. Married woman can not own property whether it be personal property or land even the clothes on their back belong to their husband. Married woman were also prohibited from signing contracts in her own name. A married woman could also not obtain any form of education without their husbands approval and last but not least if a woman was permitted to have a job she was required to turn over all her wages to her husband as coverture does not recognize the right of woman to posses money and any money she acquires is not hers but her husbands.
The dissatisfied wife Emily Smith has after several disagreements with how her husband has managed her former property which she was forced to relinquish to him upon marriage has brought up the case with the highest law in the colony that being the Colonial Congress and Advisory Committee. Her case holds merit in some corners legally the Colonies can set their own law codes. Quebec uses the French law codes and the East India Company still governs using traditional Indian values and laws for its legal system. The motherland itself has different law codes itself. In Scotland coverture is not part of Scottish common law at all and in Wales their common law while close to England's has a much less absolute form of coverture where woman don't lose all their rights at marriage but they are still under the law one body and one soul. It falls to the government to decide this case which could potentially alter Georgia's entire system of law.

Also The Colonial Congress and Advisory Committee have yet to determine the name of the future capitol the two hundred residents of the location have submitted a proposal to name the future capitol Maryburg after King George and Queen Charlette's youngest child Princess Mary who was born this year on April the twenty fifth. The residents also included a backup proposal if the government did not like Maryburg. Their second proposal is to name the location after the King and Queens one-and-a-half year old son Prince Adolphus who was King George's youngest child until this April.

what will the capitol be named?
[] Maryburg (after King's youngest child)
[] Adolphus (After King's second youngest child)

What a time for this case to pop up.

I would have the government argue that due to the extraordinary circumstances of ongoing war and local realities, woman are legally allowed to own/manage the families' property.

Might be pushing the current social customs.

so its time for Women's suffrage?
Not quite. While we should definitely use this as a great time to push some measure of reforms, we need to be careful not to rock the boat too much while the rebellion is still going on. It wouldn't do to have more dissatisfied citizens while we just got rid of a different boiling pot of dissent in the form of the SoL.

On a matter like this you basically have free reign since Georgia's citizens come from Scotland, England, Wales, Ireland and Germany. So while some Englishmen may grumble about a corruption of law the population wouldn't explode in outrage if you did away with Coverture all together.

Can we just? Just pull up like "fuggit women have all the rights and handling things otherwise is totes your problem so deal with it"

Can we do that?

Georgia doesn't have a Supreme Court you can include the establishment of one in the Coverture vote but your the only one with sufficient authority to handle it.

That makes it easy then.

[] Plan Private Property
-[] Coverture: Due to extraordinary circumstances of ongoing war and local realities, woman are legally allowed to own/manage property. Man and woman are no different in the eye of the government.
-[] Militia: Have the militia establish regular patrols between cities and towns. Show the people the government is here to protect them.
-[] Native: Start dialog with the native leaders, figure out the land rights and native employment under Georgia government. There are wealth of resources that can be better developed with native's contribution.
-[] Migration: The colony is the youngest of the east coast, which means there are plenty of room for hopefuls to join our community. Spread the news in Europe, you too can begin anew in Georgia.
-[] News paper: Let everyone know the defeat of SOL criminal group . The people demanded justice and the government delivers.

So like, in general what are our capabilities regarding the matter? Like, presuming we don't want to default to english common law?

Due to extraordinary circumstances of ongoing war and local realities
What does this have to do with the case? Like, I get where you're going with "emergency shift" but if you're just going at coverture we already have WOG that the people aren't really going to get that fired up by us just doing away with it so why do we have to half step it when the it's not an issue needing half steps?

My view is 2 fold.
  • It is likely our existing English citizens still have connections back home and the British authority may grumble if we make the law deviation too obvious.
  • There is no real way of judging if there are unforeseeable problem and by doing half steps we get people used to the new normal without being in their face about it.
