[] Midna
[] Malon

"Hey Link, you mind helping me with the rifle?" Malon asks, jerking a thumb over her shoulder to the stairs behind her "You've got the most experience with them, right?"

"Used one before, yeah," You say, getting up from your seat. Mipha and Paya were helping to clean up the dishes and transport the catatonic Romani to another room while Zelda and Irene had just left to finish up chores outside. Midna though had just outright disappeared while you weren't looking.

Malon nods, waiting a moment for you to hurry over before she makes her way up the stairs with you following behind her. Unlike downstairs which was more brightly lit only a few oil lamps were lit upstairs, just enough to keep you all from tripping as Malon leads you to what you can only assume was the master bedroom, her own room. You don't recall much about your time at Hyrule Castle so your main experience with luxury was mostly regulated to staying at Impa's manor which was certainly spartan compared to more Hyrulean styles but you imagine Malon's room would count as some definition of upper class. A large bed in a richly carved wooden frame dominated the centre of the room, the blankets richly embroidered though you note that strangely the pillows seemed rather plain and more along the lines of what you had back in your treehouse. A large flat-topped chest was at the foot of the bed, sitting on a large and rather comfortable looking rug. A wardrobe and small bedside table flanked on either side of the bed, a vanity with a polished mirror that was covered in empty perfume bottles and rather hastily covered jars of what you assume was makeup sitting next to the wardrobe, odd considering Malon didn't seem to be wearing perfume or makeup. Beside the Vanity was a dresser, on top of which seemed to be a few personal belongings; a small closed triptych and a small statue of the goddess Hylia more similar to the one you've seen belonging to the Sheikah, though this had a base where the royal crest of Hyrule was visible, the wingcrest below what you now know was the triforce. The end table on the other hand only had a small oil lamp and a sealed bottle sitting on top of it.

Across from the wardrobe and pushed up against the wall was a small writing desk, certainly not one would do most of the ranches paperwork at (You had spotted the main office downstairs) but one that was covered in books. On the opposite wall from this however was a fireplace, currently unused but which had a chair pushed in front of it with a small wicker basket of what you assume was a sewing kit sitting next to it, judging by the shirt sitting folded on top of it. Shoved into the corner you could see a metal tub peeking out from behind a set of folding wooden screens, several brushes and washcloths lying piled next to it. The windows in the room were open letting the cool night air in, the smell of cattle barely noticeable and were it daytime probably giving you an impressive view of the ranch.

What finally draws your attention however is the thin wooden case sitting atop the chest, small brushes and jars carefully set up on top of it, barely obscuring the inlaid design of the royal crest in the polished wood.

"So here it is!" Malon says, hovering behind you, her cheeks and ears turning a shade of crimson as she gestures, "I mean I haven't taken it out because it's really odd looking and figured an expert should get a chance to look everything over..."

You give a nod, and carefully you kneel down and move the bottles and brushes away before carefully opening the case up. Sitting, nestled in silk cloth was the most ornate and odd-looking rifle you'd ever seen. The whole thing seemed to be made of metal, with a thick dark coloured plate extending from the muzzle to the trigger, a golden bird design seemingly taken from the royal family crest decorated it with the head forming the trigger-guard and the wings sweeping upwards to cover the actual firing mechanism and strangely hold up a circle of glass with lines etched into it. The rest of the plate was inlaid with golden designs, swirls and the Royal crest firmly stamped onto the side and clearly visible. The muzzle was shaped like a stylized bird head, with wings again following the design of the royal crest sweeping downwards revealing what looked like a hole for someone to slot in a Royal dagger as a bayonet. The stock was coloured a light purple with gold inlays, with a gold plate at the very back. Picking it up you were surprised at how balanced it seemed, comfortably fitting in your grip. You hold the rifle up, looking down its and length and only then realizing that the glass seemed to be some sort of sight. Whoever made this certainly intended it to be frighteningly accurate.

Fiddling with it though there seemed to be an odd lever to the side and you couldn't quite make out the firing mechanism. Some instinct makes you hit something on the rifle, only for the entire front portion of the rifle to swing down, prompting a shocked cry from Malon, "WHAT DID YOU DO?!"

"It's hinged," You say as you show it to Malon who peers at it closely, her shock turning to puzzlement, "I... think it's loaded this way. If you look closely it seems there's a mechanism to stop the bullet from falling down the barrel."

"Who would think to load a gun from the back?" Malon ponders aloud, cocking her head to the side as she squinted at the mechanism, "At least that explains why it doesn't seem to come with a rod but... hang on," She pauses, leaning in so close her red hair almost completely obscures your view, "There's two sets of firing mechanisms. There's the flint but the other is... a hammer?"

As she steps back for you to take a look you do confirm there was indeed two types of firing mechanism. Curious you take another look at the lever and noticing small writing you note the words "Powder" and "Sabot" with a quick test confirming the flint was for the powder while the hammer was for the sabot, the lever seemingly determining which was used.

"Link, do you know what a sabot is?" Malon asks after you repeat to her what you discovered as she takes the rifle from your hands.

"All I can think of is a sabaton, but why they'd fire foot armour at people I haven't the faintest idea, and why the hammer mechanism?" You ponder as Malon with surprising ease snaps the rifle open and close before quickly raising it up to her eye and mime firing, "You seem pretty comfortable with it though."

She shoulders the rifle, grinning proudly as she rubs a finger under her nose, "Weeeeeell, this isn't my first time using a rifle. Sure it's different, but I've got plenty of practice at fairs to know how to use a rifle."

"Oh?" You say with a smirk, "Maybe we should have a competition sometime then? I won many a cheese wheel back in my village."

"You're on," Malon eagerly replies, her grin growing wider as she takes a step towards you, crystal blue eyes shining, "We'll see if the knight can keep up with the farmgirl~"

"And would that farmgirl have a secret weapon?" Another voice asks, making you both jump and turn to see Midna floating beside Malon's bed, the bottle you had noted on her nightstand clutched in her hand. She tosses it to you which you deftly catch, and you take a look towards Malon. All colour had drained from her face as she stared at the bottle, her eyes widened in horror, pupils shrunk to pinpricks as her mouth worked silently up and down. The rifle slipped from her fingers, falling to the floor as her eyes began to dart between you and the bottle in your hand.

Concern welling up you properly inspect it, your heart sinking as you read the label on the bottle, "Sweet Shroom concentrate," You look up to farm girl standing before you who had recoiled at each syllable as if you had struck her, eyes fixed on you. You can only speak to her softly, "Malon..."

"And what is this sweet shroom concentrate? Some elixir?" Midna asks, looking curiously between you and Malon.

You take a deep breath before replying, "Concentrate from the poisonous sweet shroom. It's used to bait traps "humanely." The animal eats it and then drifts off to sleep only they won't ever wake up. In large enough quantities it works the same with humans. This should be enough for two..." You trail off as Malon wraps her arms around herself, shivering as she seems to curl in on herself.

Midna though has a reaction you didn't expect, the normally haughty expression on her face vanishing as she looks between you and Malon replaced with shock and to your surprise a hint of fear. With one swift movement she rushes over and snatches the bottle from your hand before it seems to explode, ripped apart by Midna's magics. Midna then just stands there, looking between you and Malon while breathing heavily, her eyes whenever they were on you conveying a desperate unspoken plea to you to do something, anything.

So you step forward.

"I-I can't l-let them hurt her," Malon whispered, stammering over each word, "I-I kept holding out but they kept winning a-and then Romani stopped... S-she can't even eat," Malon runs a hand through her hair, nails clawing at her scalp as she starts babbling, so much held-in pain finally coming out, "A-and she screams sometimes... she's in pain and I can't... I can't..." She looks up to you, eyes wild as she chokes out, "I can't let them h-hurt her more. I-if they win they'll... i-it won't just be me! A-anything..." Malon takes a half step towards you, her voice pleading, "I-I would do anything t-to keep her safe. S-so I... I-I told them it was for rats a-but if they'd win I... I... then you all came. Y-you fed us... stood up for me. I... I was going to throw it out but I forgot and you saw and now you'll... you'll..." She looks at you, genuine fear in Malon's eyes as she begs, taking another step towards you, "Please... please..."

You don't immediately reply and gently put your hands on Malon's shoulders. All strength seems to leave Malon then and you let yourself sink down to your knees with her, your hands still on her arms to keep her upright.

"Malon," You say, your voice steady as you look into her downcast eyes, "I swear to you we will do everything in our power to keep Romani and you safe. We'll get you out of here and find a cure for whatever afflicts Romani. I swear this as a knight and a friend."

Malon doesn't respond or change her expression, but you feel her arms lift up and wrap themselves around your torso. You bring her into a tight hug, and you hear a small intake of breath from the girl, her arms faltering for a moment before she returns it. She doesn't cry, doesn't make a sound but slowly you feel her holding you more tightly, feel her heart beating faster and faster in her chest before it slows back to a steady rhythm. Out of the corner of your eye though you see a black and grey form start to close in, moving to embrace and comfort Malon but Midna stops just short even as her arms wrap around Malon and yourself before she suddenly recoils as if burnt, turning her back on you so all you could see were her robes as she floated on the other side of the room.

After a moment you begin to hear a whispered "St-st-st-st-st-st-st-st-st-st-sta-" from Malon before she stops, and shakes her head into your shoulder. She pulls back from you and though you don't see any tears her eyes were bloodshot. She looks you in the eye and gives a muttered "Thank you..." before trying to stand.

You help her up, the strength still gone from her limbs. Malon makes a movement suddenly to move past you but you hold onto her arm and she stops, not struggling or trying to pull away. "Hey," You say softly, and Malon tilts her head slightly towards you, "You should sleep, you're exhausted. I'll bring Romani up, alright?"

Malon looks over to you, still looking absolutely drained but a flash of gratitude flashes in her expression before she practically slumps onto her bed. You take a moment to put the rifle back into its case and just barely catch Midna reaching out to the unaware Malon again but when you look up to see what Midna's expression was the Twili vanished, disappearing into the shadows.

With a sigh you make your way downstairs, running into Mipha and Paya who's expressions brighten when they see you enter, though Paya tries to hide her face behind her hands. Your expression must have gave something away though, as both suddenly look at you with concern but you shake your head, only saying that you'll take Romani to Malon.

Leaving your two friends behind, the catatonic girl in your arms you make your way upstairs but you pause at the top of the stairs, looking down at the girl as her unseeing eyes stared up at you. She was so light, so small and fragile seeming. She wasn't completely limp like an unconscious person but neither did she seem alive in your arms. Holding her you could tell she was practically skeletal, only the slight movement of breathing and the beat of her heart gave any indication she was clinging onto life. Someone had done this to her, robbed a child of her health and mind for seemingly no reason other than callous cruelty. You think to Koko and Cottla and all the pain that had been inflicted onto them and the harm you had narrowly saved them from, the suffering that had been inflicted on your friends as adults and children. "How many other children" was the thought that rose most prominently in your mind as anger and sorrow boiled up within you, but you knew it was nothing compared to what their family and loved ones must feel. Yet some part of you seemed to reach out to them, connect with something fierce and vengeful you didn't want to acknowledge as their grief and anger seemed to flow through you.

You looked down to Romani and whispered, "I don't know who you were Romani, but I can tell your sister loves you with all her heart. I promise you-" Your voice hitches for a moment, hands shaking slightly before you calm and a power seems to echo behind your voice, "I promise you she'll see you laugh and smile again, see you well and whole again. I know... I know that's what you desire with all your strength, I'll do everything to make that come true. And," your voice becomes growl as you see a strand of dark blond hair flash white for an instant as the back of your hand glowed, "I promise you those who did this will pay for what they've done to you."

Romani doesn't acknowledge you. With a tired sigh you carry her the rest of the way to Malon's room. There you see Malon wearing a thin smock that reached down to her shins sitting on her bed. She starts at the sound of the opening door, turning to look at you with glistening, bloodshot eyes, "Link-" She begins, before stopping short and focusing on the girl in your arms. She gets up, taking Romani from you and setting her gently on the bed, tenderly brushing away a strand of red hair that had fallen in front of Romani's eyes. Malon stared at her sister for a long time, looking at her with all the love and concern an elder sister could. Finally, she turns to look back at you, opening her mouth to say something but you hold a hand up to stop her.

"You don't need to say anything Malon, you and your sister should get some sleep. We've probably got a lot to do tomorrow," You say to her, before giving her a small smile, "I'll see you at breakfast, alright?"

Malon stares up at you for a second, before you see a very tired but thankful smile cross her face and she gives you a nod.

That night, as you lay in your bed with Sif at your feet you couldn't help but feel relieved that you didn't hear sobs coming from Malon's room, but you somehow knew she held her sister close the entire night, even when Malon finally drifted off to sleep...

Unaware to you a lonely orphan slumped against the barn wall, soaked in a cold sweat. What had been a flight to wallow in regret and sorrow had given way as she clutched at her chest, trying to calm her pounding heart as terror had suddenly consumed her and left her only able to ask, "What was that? What was that?!"

++++
The morning was quiet, Malon's eyes were red and she lacked the energy she had showed but she seemed happy, almost relieved as if you had taken a weight off her shoulders. She greeted you with a smile and nod, making up for her lack of energy with the warm look she gave you throughout breakfast. Everyone else seemed fine save two exceptions. Midna who seemed to have not shown up, but you assumed that was due to the sunlight and Irene. Oh boy Irene.

Her eyes were just as red as Malon's, except her's looked like it was because she hadn't slept a wink. She was dishevelled and seemed to be nursing a massive headache. Mipha had determined that it might be allergies, something her powers did little to actually affect. You did learn though that illnesses and infections were tricky for her to deal with because her healing magic was indiscriminate. Diseases, as Zelda helpfully explained, were caused by tiny creatures called bacteria and viruses and sadly while Mipha could help soothe she ended up healing them as she healed her target. This was especially dangerous with herself, as while Zora were tougher than humans they weren't wholly suited for life mostly away from water. Thankfully Mipha reassured you all that she was feeling fine, which certainly pleased Irene as Mipha could at least relieve some of Irene's suffering.

Still, this did leave time for you all to discuss what chores needed to be done. While Malon would be abandoning this place some maintenance had to be done. Animals too needed to be fed. You could also get Mipha and Irene to go with you to check over Malon's land, see if anything suspicious was going on. Or perhaps there was something else you needed to do but had forgotten?

What chore do you do?
[] Feed animals.
[] Do maintenance.

GM note: Not sure on this one. Hopefully I covered the poison bit believably. Feel free to let me know your thoughts on it.

[] Patrol.

After the events of the other day patrolling seemed to be the best option. Not only would you get an idea if someone was going to try and steal cattle or had to plan around any vantage points but you figured it'd be good to have Malon keep busy and after what happened last night anything to help her feel safer would probably be a decent idea.

Throwing on your armour and strapping the master sword to your back you make your way out to begin preparing the horses for the round trip. You'll be riding Epona while Irene will be using her broom close to the ground so she can quickly hop off if anyone spots you. Malon meanwhile will be riding Malanya, with Mipha riding with her as Malon was only one here second to you in riding skill purely out of lack of practice but was completely inexperienced in regards to combat.

Speaking of Mipha was walking up now with her trident resting on her shoulder contrasting sharply with the simple armour she was wearing. While your hero's outfit was of impossibly high-quality Mipha's outfit did highlight how oddly mismatched you all must look, especially with the extra armour you've thrown on over top. Even those who delve into Hyrule's ancient ruins wouldn't have the same kind of gear your group has acquired despite your constant state of poverty. Even the casual observer might notice somethings off...

Mipha seems to notice you staring at her though quickly looks away awkwardly scratching her neck, "Is um... something the matter Link?" She asks, hesitating slightly.

"We're way to conspicuous with our gear," You reply honestly, "We might be fine at a distance but if we keep going into towns..."

The Zora princess sighs, "I've been noticing that too... I thought... I assumed that it isn't totally suspicious even without that broken collar but we can't exactly pretend to be just mercenaries with what we have," She holds out her trident in front of her, seemingly looking at her expression reflected in its polished silver, "Even wrapping them up would just endanger us, as we're too often attacked to worry about needing to unwrap it."

"It's starting to reach the point that spending any rupees we earn on some fancy gear might make us less obvious," You observe, rubbing your chin in thought, "But we burn through funds so quickly, and the type of equipment we need..."

"But we barely have the time," Mipha responds, looking back to Malon's manor, "Link, you and I are the only ones with long-term combat experience. I'm sure you've noticed that it's almost like we're being worn down by... whatever our enemy is."

You fold your arms across your chest and nod. Every time you've been in a tough fight it was always after your group and worn themselves down fighting a foe or was half exhausted after a day's events, "Considering what we saw with those Keese monsters it wouldn't surprise me if we're being watched from the shadows. We're catching them off guard, I don't think they expected... well, you know but they're adapting, wearing down our resources so they can beat us in a fight. We need a proper supply chain or we'll never make it to the other maidens."

"Neither of us logistician's though," Mipha gives you small smile, "We're good at hitting things, but Zelda's been the one on top of things on that front. Her intuition was incredible, Malon's just what we need but..." She frowns, "I fear it may only be buying us time once we get her out of here..."

"Having a source of food will be enough for us to make it through the wilderness to find wherever Medli has ended up, from there I guess we'll have to talk with the others to get a plan," You say with a shrug.

"Speaking of, I wonder where Malon and Irene are. Surely they should be ready by now?" Mipha ponders aloud, peering around the corner of the barn you were both standing in front of to get a better look of the rest of the property and almost immediately jumping back in surprise.

Raising an eyebrow you follow Mipha, only to behold Irene with her head pressed against the side of the barn, hat eschew and broom held loosely in her hands as she gives a groan of acknowledgement.

"Allergies still?" You ask.

"Mrglblrgl..." Was the unintelligible response from the witch.

"It's probably the cattle, I'm sure being on this journey will make you feel better," Mipha tries to reassure Irene, patting her on the back. Irene only groans in response.

"Sorry to make you all wait!" A voice suddenly calls out, and you all turn to see a familiar red-head farmgirl. Instead of her typical dress, she was wearing a sleeveless purple tunic over a long-sleeved shirt though she had kept the yellow shawl and broach she normally wore. Rugged, dark grey trousers ended in sturdy work boots and around her waist was a strip of wool cloth and a belt from which hung a small bag and notably a powder horn. A frayed straw hat sat lopsided on her head from under which Malon gave an apologetic smile. What all your eyes were drawn too, however, was the royal rifle hanging loosely from her back by a long leather strap. "It took a while to um... well I wasn't really sure how to carry it," She said nervously, glancing at your and Mipha's heavily armed state her smile vanished and with a tense voice said, "I... guess I didn't over-prepare though..."

"Hopefully we won't need to fight, but we should discourage anyone deciding to do anything stupid," You say, mounting Epona, "We'll follow behind when you're ready."

Malon nervously gulped, before clapping both hands to her cheeks and rubbing them before she ran off to mount Malayna, with Mipha climbing up behind her.

Then she took off, with you and Irene following close behind.

++++
Malon's property it turned out was mostly grassy fields and rolling hills, with a few clumps of tree's ranging from sparse to densely packed. Shallow creeks wound their way through the property on their way towards the far more massive Hylia river. There were also ruins, odd clumps of crumbling stonework sticking out from hills that suggested the remains of some structures, yet they were far too old to identify by anyone not named Zelda. Yet for what is intended as grazing land for cattle Malon had to frequently call out to prevent you from stumbling onto someone's property that was marked by a barely perceptible stone marker as it cut into Malon's land. Most of it seemed like wilderness but you could see the beginnings of ramshackle structures being constructed.

"They're building farms this far from the road?" You ask as Epona trots up next to Malon, Irene following beside you as she hovered only a few inches off the ground.

Malon, however, shakes her head, "I don't know what they're building, whatever it is it looks cheap. But last time I had cattle wander over they fined me an incredible amount of Rupees so keep your distance. "

"Didn't know they were that strict with livestock," You reply, before a thought hits you, "Hey, this area must be full of deer and fowl. Do they allow you to hunt at all?"

Malon lets out a bark of bitter laughter that makes Mipha jump slightly behind her, "They actually went out of their way to threaten me about that, had to pull out my pitchfork to get them to leave me alone."

Mipha leaned over on the horse, blinking her yellow eyes, "But you own this land, surely that means you can hunt game upon it? Was there some decree?"

Malon shook her head, "I don't know, and I never hunted before so I didn't look into it. But from what I hear you aren't even allowed to hunt or fish on common land," She stopped to adjust her hat, to block the sun's glare, "I don't even know if common land is even a thing anymore, and apparently they own all livestock now too. The only reason my cattle haven't been confiscated is because the Empire only declared animals that are intended to have their meat consumed as being owned by them, thankfully. But who knows, they might even declare crops, wood and foraged food as belonging to the empire."

Your hands tighten on Epona's reigns, that was... bad. REALLY bad. Many communities in Hyrule relied on what the land surrounding them could provide, and you'd heard from Zelda and Paya that Hyrule's wealth came in large part from its agriculture. To just suddenly decide that... the people couldn't even rebel as the Empire vastly outnumbered them with their autonomous armour and the wilderness was full of monsters. Yet why were the people then so against helping the holdouts against that like Malon?

"Hey!" Malon suddenly calls out as she urges her horse ahead, pointing toward a hill covered in thorny looking bushes "Up there on that hill is a great vantage point!"

"Thank goodness, I need to lie down..." You hear a mumbled reply beside you and you look down to see Irene trailing slightly behind practically slumped over her broom as her feet drag on the ground. Before you inquire about her health she shoots off, catching up with Malon and Mipha who were getting off Malayna to carefully pick their way around the oddly familiar thorns.

You stop, watching the girls as Irene flies up to the peak of the hill and drunkenly swaying begins to pull herself off her broom as Malon stumbles up next to her through the increasingly thick brush. Something was bothering you as you began to approach, before realizing far too late what it was.

"GET OUT OF THERE! RUN!" You scream, yet Irene and Malon don't seem to hear you as they both turn to look at you in confusion as the plants and thorns shifted revealing a massive plant bulb that opened to reveal rows of sharp, needle-like teeth.

Malon turned first, a horrified scream tearing itself from her throat as she desperately tried to pull the rifle from her back. Irene was too slow, looking at you with a dazed expression before her eyes widened, a crimson cloud erupting from her mouth as the Deku Baba shot out and clamped its massive jaw around her torso, sinking its long teeth into her flesh with a bone-shattering crunch you heard from the bottom of the hill. It lifted Irene into the air, its snake-like stalk rising from the ground as it shook Irene like a ragdoll, splashing Malon with a torrent of blood and sending Irene's hat careening off out of sight as Malayna reared back in fright.

Malon then slammed her rifle into the monstrous plant like a club, striking it in its bulb-like head with enough force to make it drop Irene who crumpled with a wet sound at its base as it jerked its head back. Then a ruby scaled meteor slammed into it, silver prongs erupting from the bottom of its jaw with a spray of blackish-green fluid before with a snarl from Mipha a tornado of water surrounded her tearing the Deku Baba apart. Mipha then practically threw her trident away as she dove to press her hands into Irene's side, a blue glow surrounding them.

You sprinted up the hill, master sword in hand, it's shining glow bright even in the noontime sun. Malon had fallen to her knees, staring with wide horrified eyes at the gurgling spasming form of Irene, her jaw working up and down as her hands reached up but didn't make it to her blood-splattered face.

Irene side was completely shredded, a bloody mess that resembled spilling offal then the side of a young woman with an arm that was hanging by a thread in two places. You almost slid to a stop beside her as you rip off the cork of a bottle of fairy tonic and press the bottle to her lips, the glowing pink liquid flowing down her throat.

Almost immediately her thin form glowed a bright pink through her clothes before the light disappeared just as quickly, all signs of injuries suddenly gone though her dress was shredded and soaked through with blood as she rolled over onto her side and gave several hacking coughs.

"Can you stand? Are you in pain?" You ask as you lean down close to Irene as she twists and pushes herself up onto her hands and knees, taking several deep shuddering breaths as she nods and then shakes her head. She swallows, makes a wretching sound and then vomits then and there as you shuffle back slightly to avoid being splashed.

When she finishes she collapses sideways, away from her sick and into your arms. Irene looks up at you, tears in her dark blue eyes as she cries to you, "I... I-I really h-hate t-that... T-that... p-part of me w-wants to get up n-now a-and continue o-on."

You don't let her, holding her tightly as you look over to see Mipha holding a blood-splattered Malon's just as you were holding Irene, resting the girl's head against her chest and rocking her back forth as Malon whispered in horrified shock, "Blood... h-her arm... w-what..."

You both hold the two Hylian girls until finally, Irene pulls herself away from you and shakily pulls herself to her feet. You offer Irene her broom, which she happily leans on as you collect her hat and hand it to her. As she holds it in her hands, the tatters of her bloody dress sticking to her thin frame she suddenly asks, "W-why does t-this f-feel normal? T-this shouldn't f-feel normal..."

You bring her close for a moment, before helping Irene onto Epona's saddle, "We're heading back."

Irene shakes her head, "No, L-Link there might be more-"

"Deku Baba's spew poison mist Irene, we need to check you over and neither you or Malon is in any state to continue anyways," You firmly tell her, before your expression softens, "Please, just try to rest for a moment."

Irene doesn't reply but gives you a nod as you head over to Malon. Malon was stumbling as if in a daze, jumping slightly at your touch before she clings to you. You and Mipha share a look, one that told you the memory of your earlier conversation was flashing to the forefront of both your minds before you both help Malon onto Malanya, the white horse calm despite all that had happened.

With Mipha getting up behind Malon to hold her steady you get onto Epona and with one hand holding the still weak Irene you urge Epona on, whistling for the well-trained Malanya to follow. At nearly a full gallop you reach the ranch in no time at all. Getting off Epona you help Irene down, looking over you see Malon get off Malanya under her own power while Mipha stays close nearby.

"You both feeling better?" You ask and you feel a sense of relief as they both nod.

"I... We've been bloodied before right? I'm just... I just need to clean myself up," Irene tells you, trying to stand up straight but looking very wobbly, "I... could you two worry about me after that? Please?"

With great reluctance you give Irene a nod, before you look over to Malon, "How're you holding up?"

"I..." She begins, before swallowing nervously, and you notice her touching one of the crimson wet spots on her clothes, looking over to Irene, "I-I don't think I'm ready for what you guys deal with..."

"We understand, I'm sure the village will be fine with-" You begin, but Malon shakes her head.

"I-I'm not ready but..." She pauses, taking another calming breath "...I don't think you guys should face that alone. I saw that look in both your eyes, Link and Your Maj- I mean Mipha, you're used to this even if it's... scary," She gives both you and Mipha a strained smile, "But I know really well when someone's trying to hide how much things hurt them," You and Mipha suddenly turn away, unable to look Malon in the eye but she doesn't comment instead addressing the blood-covered witch, "Irene I'll... I'll help you get cleaned up..."

"Hold on... weren't Zelda and Paya supposed to be caring for the animals today?" Mipha suddenly interjects and you all turn to see her scanning the ranch with narrowed eyes, "Why haven't they made their way towards us after we returned so quickly?"

Worry suddenly settles in your gut and your hand begins to reach up towards the sheathed master sword. However, a bit of relief washes over you as you suddenly spot a blue orb of light shoot out from the manor and zip over to you.

"Hey! You're back! We need some-" Proxi begins to shout before she stops dead in the air and suddenly screams "OH NO YOU'RE HURT?! WHAT HAPPENED?!" The fairy zips around Irene and Malon with dizzying speed, fretting over the two bloodied girls.

"Proxi," You say, holding up a hand in the fairy's path, "Proxi we need you to stay calm. What's going on here, what do you need?"

Proxi floats up to your face and you can just make out the tiny fretting fairy nervously wringing her hands through the aura of light surrounding her, "It's Romani, she started holding her head and looking all distressed but we can't do anything!"

You nod, just in time to see Malon sprint past towards the manor, with the rest of you quickly following behind. Entering the manor you see Zelda pressed into the wall next to the entrance of the dining room with Malon's red mane disappearing through the door, Zelda having evidentally pressed into the wall to avoid getting bowled over. She looks over to you, visible relief on her face... before she notices the state you're all in.

"WHY ARE YOU ALL COVERED IN BLOOD?!" She shouts, horrified.

"Deku Baba ambush, Irene needs to be checked for poisoning if the Fairy Tonic didn't cure her," You say quickly as you walk past her towards the dining room.

"Wha... R-right!" Zelda says, quickly taking Irene by the hand as she began to look over Irene. Poisons, after all, were rarely immediately obvious unless it had started spewing its toxic fumes, Irene would need to be watched for a few hours.

Stepping into the dining room you spot a distressed and unsure looking Paya who starts at your approach, but you make a quick motion to reassure her before looking over to Malon and Romani. Malon was kneeling beside her sister who was sitting in a chair, clutching her head and shaking.

"Nnnngh... no... no no no no..." A pained hoarse voice came from Romani, a sound you never wanted to hear from a child, "Romani... why... No... Nnnaaagh!!"

The girl spasmed and kept clutching her head and with a great deal of worry you began to approach but Malon suddenly spoke up, her voice strained, "She still doesn't react when she's like this, somethings hurting her but I don't know what..."

Mipha doesn't say a word, pushing past to lay a hand on Romani that glowed faintly, "Even if she doesn't react... if she's in pain I'll try to ease it."

Malon looked up to Mipha, giving a teary nod to the Zora Princess as she got to work. A thought though was at the back of your mind and you looked to Paya who was transfixed on Romani, worry clear on her face, "Paya, when did she start acting like this?"

"A-about an hour or two ago master Link," Paya says, "L-lady Zelda and I d-didn't know what to do..." She trails off, looking back to Romani with a worried expression "I-it's just like when Lady Zelda escaped the castle..."

"That's when we were attacked..." You look over to Mipha, Romani and Malon. Could it possibly be...

"Wait, you said you were attacked at the same time?" A chiming sound followed a small voice, and you looked over to see Proxi floating a few inches from your head looking at you with a worried expression.

You nod, "Yeah, it doesn't seem like it could be a coincidence."

Proxi nods, and you see her close her eyes through the sphere of light that surrounded her, her wings beating slowly as she took a deep breath before they opened wide, "Whatever's here I can't sense it but..." She puts a hand to her chest, her expression serious, "I'm a fairy. We know when we see a sign that our hearts will always lead us true and all my heart is now telling me this is a curse."

Malon looks to you, the distress clear in her face at Proxi's words, "Someone... cursed Romani?!"

"I think it's tied to the monsters if you guys got attacked at the same time," The little fairy folds her arms, tapping her foot in the air as though lost in thought, "Ugh! I can't think of how it'd work! We need to find someone skilled with magic!"

"The master sword is used to dispell evil, can't we use it?" You ask, jerking a thumb to the sword on your back.

Proxi just shakes her head, "I'm just a fairy, but I think they're more complex than that."

"L-Lady Midna's really good with magic!" Paya interjects though she wilts as you all look to her, "M-m-maybe she'd know?"

"She is our expert, but has anyone seen her today? Even with the sun?" You ask, but everyone shakes their heads, "Damnit, now I'm worried..."

"Lady Midna is badly hurt by the sun and is unfamiliar with our world," Mipha states, stepping back from Romani, "If she was caught in a shadow as dawn approached she may be stuck until this evening."

Which means you'll need to wait till night to go looking for her, as literally any shadow around the Ranch could have her.

You will need to come up with a plan to discuss with everyone. Curses and monsters are intrinsically linked, you know that much. But even if you went out with the Master Sword you weren't sure if a monster was the source. The master sword at least could ease up the pressure on Malon's lands, even get some monster parts you can sell. But that would also almost definitely tip off the human element that Malon's "guests" are actually trained monster killers which is probably exactly what the Gorman brothers don't want and would definitely wear down your resources. Your group is also being hunted, so it may mean whatever foe is after you may come here if you're obvious which would put Malon and Romani in a horrific amount of danger, even if monsters seem to target you guys fir- no, that doesn't make sense.

The monsters previously targeted your allies, they waited for you to expend resources, tire yourselves out and you only ever got out of it thanks to a sudden save. Malon was the one by the Deku Baba, yet it waited till Irene got close. Deku Baba's normally were thought to lash out at anything that got near but even if it was being controlled why wait for Irene? Did it know Irene is a maiden or was there another reason? Why didn't it spew its toxic mist everywhere? If Deku Baba's are around why were the soldiers frightened of Chuchu's? Monsters weren't bound by property lines and Malon's lands weren't exactly the middle of nowhere, farms were all around it and you saw nearby construction.

You could investigate, slip into town, maybe even taunt them into making a mistake and revealing some information by taking Malon with you. But that might push the Gorman's into trying to exert their power to intimidate Malon and the rest of you, not as dire as them knowing Malon's playing host to trained killers but still an issue with you needing to evacuate her and Romani.

If there was something they knew about this you could keep to the farm, make it seem like Malon is scared and let them get careless. It'd be the safest bet, but when that portal opens you might not have a clear picture of what's going on here and be unprepared when it would act then.

So what do you do suggest as a plan?
[] Clear Malon's property. Reveal you're monster hunters even if it risks luring more intelligent foes to the ranch and alerting the Gorman's.
[] Investigate in town for a hint to the curse. Risk suspicion to better prepare for evacuating Malon and curing Romani.
[] Stay low. Keep everyone safe and trick your foes into getting careless at the risk of being unprepared come the evacuation.
[] Write-in.

[] Investigate in town for a hint to the curse. Risk suspicion to better prepare for evacuating Malon and curing Romani.

"We'll need to locate a source of this curse or at least a trail, we can't cover every inch of land around the Ranch but maybe someone in town has seen something," You explain, looking to your gathered friends.

"You saw how everyone looked at us, getting anything from them would be like pulling teeth," Malon huffs, holding her shivering sister tightly to her chest.

"Well, we've seen how foolish they've acted. Perhaps we can bait them into saying something that gives us a clue on where we need to look," You offer, which makes pause and look thoughtful for a moment.

"Actually you know, that just might work," She says before a savage grin begins to spread across her face as she begins to snicker, "Oh I'd love to see the Gorman's reaction if they see me in town happy and carefree. Ehehehehe..."

"If Midna is in your shadow she may be able to sense the curse as you spend time in town," Mipha says, before sighing, eyes looking downcast, "But Paya and I will have to remain here. If we have to defend ourselves it could invite serious trouble to the ranch."

Malon's eyes brighten though as she looks over to Mipha, "Hey, maybe you can have Princess Zelda go in the guise of a noblewoman-" She pauses, "Okay that's a little odd saying out loud."

Mipha though is nodding, "No no, that is brilliant Malon. Owning a Zora slave would give some basis of authenticity."

You wince slightly at that though Malon, however, has her eyes go wide in panic as she begins to sputter, "No no no! I wouldn't ask you to be a slave-" But a sad look from Mipha cuts her off, the farmgirl wilting as though unsure of what Mipha will say next.

"I'm thankful Malon, but bearing a few indignities is well worth it if it heals your sister and someone must make sure Zelda, if she goes through with this, is safe," Mipha replies, before looking back towards the other room where she knew Zelda was inspecting Irene and leaned in close, "I do not wish to hurt Zelda's feelings so please keep this a secret but she is a far too gentle soul to ever tell a believable lie without help."

Malon quickly covers her mouth, muffling a snort as she looks away from the Zora who gives a sharp-toothed smile to the farmgirl. Paya's eyes are wide, Mipha's words looking as they genuinely shocked the Sheikah girl and she looks to you as though to ask "Really?"

Chuckling slightly and shaking your head you raise a hand to get their attention, "Well, we will need to see how the other nobles view the Gorman brothers and how much the Gorman's know about the Imperial court. If we can make a believable story for why a noblewoman or rich merchants daughter is staying at the ranch without informing them we can probably make things awkward enough that someone will end up spilling something."

"Hehe I can already see those Gormans squirming," Malon says as she punches her palm, her grin widening as the fire sitting in the hearth seems to reflect in her eyes.

"We should keep in mind if we aren't careful our faces could get out," You warn, "We should at least temper our fooling of them so we don't have the whole Empire chasing after us."

The fire in Malon's eyes dims slightly as her shoulders sag at that, but Mipha looks at you seriously, "It's only a matter of time until it gets out who we are. I'm not suggesting to be reckless but... if it is to help save an innocent child I am sure we all are willing to bare some additional hardship."

Paya nods rapidly in agreement, hands raised up and shaking slightly with nervousness but you could see in her ruby red eyes she was just as serious as Mipha was.

Your friends were all in agreement, and you knew when Zelda and Irene returned to collect Malon to clean up the blood they'd be just as willing to risk it all for Romani.

Which left you to find what the most mysterious member of your group had to think of this plan...

++++
Splitting up and wandering around in the dead of night yelling Midna's name loudly was instantly dismissed as a terrible idea to find the missing twili. So while the other's got cleaned up you sat out on a chair looking over the ranch, enjoying the sounds of evening insects as you took the time to practice with your panflute which you haven't touched in ages. The Master Sword, of course, ever by your side. You would give it till the middle of the night before you gathered everyone and organized a proper search party for Midna. As dangerous as things were you knew from your own experiences going off recklessly was a good way to end up the ones actually needing to be rescued.

Still, you were worried about Midna, where could she have possibly disappeared too-

"You."

You practically drop your flute as you bolt upright at the almost accusatory voice, whipping your head around to catch sight of its source. Suddenly shadows gathered in front of you, a welling of utter darkness that became solid until it faded to reveal the ethereal grey-skinned features of the twili princess. Yet something was wrong, her long bright orange hair which was so carefully maintained and held back by jewellery under her dark hooded robes was left to hang free and utterly dishevelled as though someone had been pulling at it for hours, the jewellery clutched so tightly in a shaking fist what could only be blood was dripping steadily into the ground under it. Midna's long hair hung over wild, darting eyes, her pupils pinpricks that could never focus on you for a second before she flinched away.

You step forward, opening your mouth to ask her what happened when she again speaks with the same accusatory, demanding tone, "Who are you?"

Icy talons of fear spear your heart, had something happened to Midna? "I-I don't understand Midna, it's me Link-"

A tendril shoots from Midna's back, glowing a dark reddish-orange with the end ablaze with a pale greenish light that embeds itself in the wall beside you. Yet you felt no fear despite how close the tendril absolutely burning with dark magic was to your cheek as it could have been a mile away as you look to Midna. You could see the tendril extending from her scalp and you realize she had transformed one of her own locks of hair into a devastating weapon, you knew nothing of magic but something about it was almost a comforting familiarity as you considered what it meant to use the vast well of power inside and to tap into it to such an extent it transformed you. Or perhaps it was you could sense there was no malice in it, nor anger as you calmly followed it to the yellow-red eyes and the look of horror and utter terror that flashed through them. The tendril retracted, unravelling back into Midna's hair as she stepped back, bare feet slipping in the mud and on her own dress as Midna barely kept her balance, unable to look at you even as you saw through her display.

Midna was scared, utterly terrified of you to the point of mindlessly lashing out. But why-?

"D-don't lie to me!" She suddenly snarled, some part of her seemingly demanding to get some measure of control back hampered greatly by her shaking, stuttering voice, "Y-you wear that mask of a loyal k-knight but I s-sensed what you're hiding. The power... that r-roiling, furious f-fire... Y-you c-could not fool me f-forever! "

Oh, "Midna," You begin, trying to sound reassuring yet the very act of speaking made Midna flinch away, almost throwing up her arms to protect herself. You inhale deeply, before letting out one long breath and stating plainly, "I am or I'm channelling the Fierce Deity, a... powerful rampaging god many of this land worship. But who they say I am, what you sensed is not who I am, not who I define myself as," You pause, letting her slowly turn to look at you, her crimson eyes meeting your blue, "I'll always be Link, always want to be Link."

Midna stares at you, your words seemingly sinking in as she whispers to herself "A god? But..."

"We should have told you, not waited till you discovered it," You say, regret settling over you like a weighted net, "I... guess just being viewed as normal by someone was... I never imagined it would do this to you. I'm truly sorry, for everything."

"Why?" She suddenly asks, making a wide gesture to everything around the ranch before pointing to you, "Why?!"

"I don't use my vast powers to change the world? Trivialize this and solve all our problems?" You ask, and Midna slowly nods, "These... abilities, whatever they are, seem wholly destructive. I don't know the whole truth, but using it puts everyone around me in danger. I'd only ever use them if we're truly without other options"

Midna just keeps nodding, almost eyes distant as she steps forward before her foot slips back and you see a flash of her yellow-red eyes widening before she tumbles forward. You leap forward, catching the Twili woman in your arms. As you support her for a moment before Midna pushes herself away you almost make a face. Her skin, robes and weight felt like you were somehow holding smoke that was barely corporeal as if Midna didn't truly exist. Her form wasn't an illusion, the blood she accidentally smeared on your green tunic was proof enough but she felt almost like a... a shadow.

Was this natural for a Twili? Or was her hiding in your shadow implying something else about her nature in Hyrule?

Questions buzzing in your head you helped lay Midna against the wall, letting her sink to the ground with a bloody hand to her forehead. "This is... this is..." Midna mutters, shaking her head as if in disbelief.

"Insane?

She nods as you sit down beside her. "You're not alone, I don't think anyone of us is really ready for everything that we've been going through," You say, looking up towards the moon and stars far above you, "None of us are familiar with our magic. You're probably the only one here with any idea of what they're capable of Midna."

"I can't believe a god would not know what they can accomplish," Midna says as she looks to you with narrowed eyes, Shadows interlaced with green tracing themselves up her hand and wrapping themselves around the cuts she had inflicted on herself, "I am not... I do not know as much as you think I do, everything of this world is a mystery. Whatever your legends say... I..." She pauses, taking a breath as she tries to look at you. There was something desperate in her eyes, much deeper than just being shaken from sensing your power "I am in this b-because I need to protect my people. If I am too follow you, a god, then I need-"

You shake your head, "You got it wrong. The one thing I agree with from what the legends say is that I am a servant to you all," You pause, giving a small laugh, "I guess you were right in how you were referring to me before. Prefer it to being called a god."

Midna stares at you, eyes wide and unblinking. She stares at you so long you began to worry.

Then she throws back her head and laughs. It wasn't a laugh of relief or amusement but a mix of emotions and that same desperation you saw in her eyes. Now, you were worried.

"Haha Finally... Finally, I can show I can protect them...!" She choked out between laughter, "Finally... fina.." She swayed, tipping over towards you as seemingly the last of her strength gave way. You move to catch her but she passes through, slipping into your shadow cast by the moon above.

"Midna!?" You shout, jumping to your shadow.

"I... I think... I need to close my eyes for a little bit," A tired voice speaks from your shadow, "Tomorrow... I... I will have collected myself tomorrow..."

You open your mouth to say something, maybe take her to an actual bed but something in her voice makes you reconsider and you say, "Alright, goodnight Midna. See you in the morning."

She doesn't reply back, but you swear you hear the sound of steady breathing from your shadow leaving you to wonder what exactly she meant by finally showing she can protect "them"...

You don't tell your friends about what happened, only that you found Midna. You could tell they knew something was up by the looks they gave you, but thankfully Midna proved talkative during breakfast which assuaged their worries. You quickly explain what you needed her for and she readily agreed, though she was noticeably less teasing. It seemed last night was still affecting her. The other's meanwhile also seemed to still be affected from last night. While Malon looked sleepless Irene looked like death warmed over. She wasn't poisoned from all appearances and her body was fully healed but it seemed like she needed time to recover.

That still leads the question of how you should approach your initial information gathering. You had many options, probably some you hadn't considered yet.

Some of the more simple plans you consider are;
[] Go alone, low profile and unfortunately without weapons. Will have to rely fully on Midna's senses for the curse source due to guarded townsfolk.
[] Go with Malon. See if you can trick them with her into giving up information, but carries some risk due to the malicious guard.
[] Go with Zelda. Get her to play up being a wealthy figure interested in the Ranch. High risk and a lot of attention, but probably talkative guard.
[] Write in a Plan.

[] Go alone, low profile and unfortunately without weapons. Will have to rely fully on Midna's senses for the curse source due to guarded townsfolk.

"So, anyplace specific we should check out?" You ask your shadow as you slowly make your way towards the village on foot. You didn't attract much more than a glance, without armour and weapons your hero's tunic and simple pouches did give the impression that you were of a higher class then a farmer but certainly not so high that it was odd you were going into town without a horse.

"I'm not even sure of the nature of this curse, let alone name a proper source," Was the annoyed reply, immediately followed by a sigh, "Which certainly isn't a helpful response for either of us to discover the vector used."

"Well... maybe we can be a little broad with it? Just find stuff that's magical and then see if it's evil or something?" You ask, stepping to the side to let a cart pass you by, the driver not even sparing you a glance as you wave your hand to disperse the dust it kicked up.

"Is magic not common enough that it will be pointless? I've seen those constructs and the evil within them," Midna replied, and you swear you could hear her scratching her chin, "Curses are not just spells cast without care, they're complex and layered in ways even far more powerful magics are not. Many are cast as an ironic punishment for the caster to gain power from the victims suffering, transform them into some hideous form or inflicted with malice to make something unable to act. All curses though have a mechanism to dispell them, usually by destroying or taking control of the source of it or whatever has been empowered."

"But our curse didn't seem to weaken when we destroyed that Deku Baba, could whatever this curse is be attracting monsters?"

"Well, unlike this blasted world of light monsters are not so much a thing in the twilight realm so I'm afraid it's far more theoretical for me, but it is possible," Midna said, and you almost imagined her leaning back behind you in the air, "But it would be quite a powerful curse to manage that."

"Well, we have a curse on the land called the blood moon that brings forth monsters by the legions," You state, grimly looking forward as you start walking past the outlying buildings of the town.

"That is... well, I don't believe such a thing that supposedly requires all of us to break would be what was used for one girl," There was a pause, followed by a muttered, "No, this is localized. A hunch maybe, but something doesn't feel right."

"I mean it's similar to what was used to hurt Sheik, and I doubt anything used against a child would feel right," You state, a bit of frustration leaking into your tone.

"But what kind of curse would be used to just damage a child's mind," Midna snaps back, "I could think of so much worse curses that wouldn't be connected to any monster. A child's mind that may just heal on its own is just... pointless."

"Sorry," You say, ducking off the main road between the houses, "I should be trusting your judgement Midna, not snapping at you just for explaining."

"Apology accepted, now could we please move somewhere that's actually-" She pauses, and you take a moment to lean against a wall in the shade, letting a woman pass by without taking notice of you.

"Found something?" You ask, unable to mask the hope in your voice.

A sigh answered you, your heart sinking as Midna spoke "Nothing, just a faint aura of magic nearby. Hardly worth notice..."

"Midna, magic is extremely rare here," You say, "I think you may have just found a clue."

There was a pause, followed by a very self-satisfied voice responding as you feel something push you forward, "Well, you better head over there to investigate!"

With a shake of your head you continue on, listening to the whispered voice from your shadow directing you forward, moving between buildings so as to not make a direct route until finally with a harsh "Stop!" You reach your target and find... nothing, just the flower bed in front of a home.

"Midna?" You whisper, looking around to make sure no one was watching you standing in front of someone's garden, "How far is this magical source?"

"Exactly one metre if my estimates are correct!" Came the same self-satisfied voice, "So tell me, what form has our curse taken?"

"Basil. It's... Basil," You say, looking down at the plant sitting innocuously in front of you. When Midna doesn't respond you elaborate by stating, "It's a plant used in cooking. A common plant."

"That... can't be right. I sense evil magic. A trace yes but..." Midna trails off for a moment, "I sense multiple sources. If you could just angle your shadow... Yes, every plant here has it."

"That can't be right. Romani was knocked out for weeks and some of these are fresh plantings," You state with a shake of your head, "See if you can get a bead on who's selling these tainted plants. Maybe that's our true culprit."

"Now that I have a source it should be easy to modify my spell, just give me-" She pauses again before hissing to you, "HIDE! Coming left side!"

Without a word you dart behind the home, ducking behind a cucco coop. You peer around a corner, watching the direction Midna warned you of encroaching danger. You didn't have much to defend yourself, if they had a weapon you'll have to take it from whatever was encroaching or grab whatever tool was lying around. Like that hoe the man who had just rounded the corner was carrying on his shoulder as he whistled a tune.

"That's the moving source!" Midna hisses from the shadows of the cucco coop, "There's many more, all moving about randomly! Hundreds, maybe even-"

"The entire population of the town?" You say tonelessly.

Midna doesn't respond, but you hear the sharp intake of breath through sharp teeth as realization dawned on her as well, "The plants! Vegetables and fruit... that is the source of the curse! The entire town is cursed from their food!"

You shake your head, brow furrowed, "No, Midna we bought produce and you didn't sense a thing. Maybe it's connected but... somethings off."

"Still, I believe we atleast found the source of what inflicted the curse onto the child. Undoubtedly with how the village has been treating her family in hunger she ate some tainted fruit or vegetable. Your people are quite cruel to let a child get to that point," Midna said, her tone cold as you could see two yellow-red eyes shift in the shadows to glare out at the rest of the village.

"But then why is the rest of the village not suffering?" You ask, "Surely a curse wouldn't be discriminatory if it was on the plantlife."

"That... is a fair point. If the land itself is blighted why is everything else fine? How come the produce we ate is free of taint when the curse extends all the way to the ranch?" In the shadows you could almost see a feminine form tapping a finger against their chin, lost in thought.

"I'm going to try asking around, long shot but maybe if I walk around the markets I can find something. Even if no one will talk to me maybe at least you'll find a source to all this," You tell Midna as you step out from behind the cucco coop, doing your best not to tread on any of the vicious birds. How reluctant can this town be to talk to outsiders anyways?

++++
It turns out very reluctant. Everyone you met barely gave you a word before walking past.

You do learn a few things about the town. For one, there were no inns or anyplace for anyone to stay. If there was any nobility they'd probably be staying with the Gorman's wherever their manor is, but the fact there wasn't a single open inn was most peculiar. It did, however, seem this wasn't always the case, as a quick look around identified that they did have inns at one point. But every inn in town had been replaced with one of the merchants you'd dealt with the other day, their signs clumsily painted or boarded over. What got you as you gave a closer inspection was they all seemed to belong to the same guild whose crest just happened to be the same as on every shield and armour belonging to the local guard.

You also noticed that what shops didn't belong to this guild were boarded up or turned into a barracks that had a single guard or a group of those constructs stored within. Any caravans heading into or out of town all wore the same uniform as the guild, which was odd compared to the multitude of different merchants you'd seen. Even if the empire was only allowing "legitimate" guilds to operate you'd seen a few competing ones, and few could do the job of a blacksmith or tailor. While trade across the towns and cities of Hyrule existed most people were still reliant on local products to meet their needs yet it looked like this guild controlled everything. You'd heard of the empire's tighter restrictions but this seemed insane.

There was a bar, a dirty ill-kempt place that for some reason had a picture of an ale keg clumsily nailed over a sign with a cow on it. Did it perhaps once belong to Lon Lon ranch? You didn't check inside, considering to leave it for later when you had Malon and maybe a weapon with you.

"Are you sure you want to take Malon to such a place? They're liable to have a cow just for her presence there," Midna helpfully informs you.

As you try to stifle a snort while muffled impish laughter comes from your shadow you make a pass around what would be normally considered a town hall. Larger than the one you saw in Ordon you could see it had been built into a church, with a centralized tower containing a bell and astronomical clock, a marvel of engineering that you must admit was rather pointless now that the blood moon existed. You're certain if Zelda was here she could have gone on for hours about the historical value of the building but you were more focused on the guards surrounding it which told more then simply going up to ask if you were permitted entry. You also noted several open windows, ones a certain Princess could easily slide her way into.

With a final nod at the building you turn around and begin making your way back to the ranch, giving the guards the slip whenever you could simply to avoid prying eyes. When you were finally far enough away from the town you spoke to your shadow, "Well, we have a target besides simply breaking into the Gorman's manor. How do you feel about snooping around tonight with Zelda?"

"Oh, noticed something? I must say my magic didn't pick up anything too interesting from that building you were staring at. Certainly nothing I would need Zelda for," Midna responded, her tone curious.

"That building is the town hall, while I'm sure everything of real value is being held hostage by the Gorman's-"

"All the town records and documentation would be held there, or with those merchants," Came the Twili's response with what you could only assume was an impish grin spreading across her face, "Ohohoho, I quite like the sound of that. Though a "knight" making the Princess's do all the hard work? My my~"

"I'm not exactly stealthy now am I?"

"I suppose not," Came the response followed by a yawn, "Wake me when it's time, I'm sure you'd want me to have all my magic for this mission."

You agree and quickly make your way back to the ranch, where you spot Zelda wearing simple clothes likely borrowed from Malon considered how loosely they hung from her and needed to be rolled up in several places, with her long gold mane tied back in a ponytail carrying a bucket you presume was previously filled of Cucco feed back to a shed.

You head over to her, Zelda spotting you out of the corner of her eye and waving to you as you closed the distance, "Heeey! Back already? Did you find anything?"

"Yeah, the curse seems tied to plants and people somehow, Midna detected it having spread everywhere," You quickly explain.

Zelda with a horrified expression quickly prompts you to explain in detail your day, with you ending explaining the details you'd noticed about the town hall.

Zelda looked deeply troubled, brow furrowed and hand on her chin as she mumbled to herself, "But if it's in the land and people... If only I could have continued my lessons!" She hissed, kicking the ground in frustration.

"Zelda, if it was brought in we could maybe find a date, find documents that give us clues or information. But you'll need to be careful, get in and out as fast as possible," You tell her, snapping her out of her thoughts.

"You're right, I'll start preparing my gear and resting up for tonight. I don't know the first thing about locks though so I hope Midna has a spell or something," Zelda says with a nod and begins walking with you inside, "Oh, I better tell Irene she might need to cover for me but I'm not sure..."

"Not sure?"

Zelda looks over to you concerned, "Well, she seemed really tired when you left so I sent her in to drink some water. I don't think Irene's poisoned but I'm worried getting injured by the Deku Baba took more out of her then she admits."

"I gave her a fairy tonic and Mipha has been giving her healing, could it just be that there's something she's horribly allergic too?" You ask as you open the door and the two of you step into the manor.

"I hope not, if it's some plant there's almost no way for us to identify what it is," Zelda says, heading towards the dining room before stopping suddenly.

You peer around Zelda, and to your surprise you see Irene standing by the table, swaying back and forth looking at the two of you with glazed eyes. The small winged blue sphere that was Proxi fluttered around her head before zipping over to you and you could just make out the tiny fretting form within, "Link! Zelda! She's just been standing here the whole time, I've tried to get her attention but she seems so confused...!"

"Link?" Irene suddenly speaks, slurring her words slightly as she looks at you with unfocused eyes. Looking closely at her she was really pale, and her black dress looked to be completely drenched, "Did you find the source?"

Surprised at being addressed you could only answer, "Maybe? Irene, I think you-"

"Oh... that's good..." Irene interrupts you before her eyes roll up and she pitches forward, head smacking against the table with a crunch as Irene collapses faster then either you or Zelda can react.

"IRENE!" You both shout, Zelda practically leaping on top of Irene as she presses her hand against the now bleeding cut in Irene's forehead.

Zelda suddenly winces, not moving her hand as she looks up to you in a panic and shouts, "Irene's burning up!!"

Fever? Damnit. But surely the tonic... "Proxi! We need to find Mipha, Irene's really sick and-"

"HEY!? Are you guys in there?!" You whirl around to see Malon rushing into the house, looking completely panic-stricken, "Every tree and plant outside just wilted! Are we under atta- BY HYLIA'S WHITE WINGS WHAT HAPPENED HERE?!"

"Irene's sick, we need to find Mipha-" You begin, not mentally processing what Malon just said only for the Zora and a closely following Paya to burst through the door and nearly collide with Malon. Mipha begins to open her mouth but the moment when she sees Irene lying on the floor, blood leaking from between Zelda's fingers she rushes past you, taking the witch from Zelda and holding a glowing hand over Irene's forehead.

"H-how could this happen?" Paya asks, almost weeping from worry, "D-did we miss she was poisoned?"

What should you do during this? Should you jump on Epona and quickly run to buy some Medicine? You doubt it will be easy, and depending on what was giving her the fever if it wasn't an infection utterly pointless. Maybe there's some cure for Deku Baba poisoning. You could stick to traditional methods, it'd be a form of general treatment and could keep her stable. It's also the default the others will fall back on.

If only you could identify what was the cause. The clues were there, you were sure of it. You just needed to put things together.

Vote options:
[] Stick to traditional methods. If you can't identify the cause best to at least keep her stable.
[] Jump on Epona and try to find some medicine. There had to be some in town.
-[] Alternatively, search for Deku Baba antitoxin.
[] Write-in guess to the cause of Irene's illness. Correctly identifying cause will result in proper treatment.

[]As you wrack your brain to figure out what's happening you can't help but realize the awful possibility the clues are pointing to. Romani's curse, connected to the Deku Babas and the fruits and vegetables in town. The strange behaviors of the villagers and the boarded up inns. Malon's sudden declaration of plant life dying.
-[]And then you suddenly remember something utterly insignificant: that Irene has been complaining of allergies almost the whole time you were here. At that point it all clicks into place.
-[]"It's the plants. Irene's the Sage of the Forest, and something is cursing the plants...and I think the whole town might be affected."

"It's the plants..." You say, realization hitting you like a tidal wave, "Irene is the Maiden of Forests, she doesn't just control plants and trees she's connected to them in some way. If the plants are what's being affected by the curse then she'd suffer just as they are."

"Wait, hold on. So the reasons all the plants outside just died..." Malon says gesturing to the open door, looking absolutely overwhelmed.

"It's a symbiotic link..." Zelda finishes Malon's sentence, holding a hand to her chin in thought as her eyes slowly widened in horror, "Whatever evil is in this place must have been slowly poisoning her, that's why she was getting sicker even with the Fairy Tonic until..."

"Then we need to take her out of here, tonight," Mipha states, looking up from the pale witch resolutely, "If the plants are all dying around us as a symptom I don't want to know what it's doing to Irene. Maybe with the Great Fairy I could heal whatever damage is being done-"

"N-no..." A weak voice mutters, hoarse and nearly silent. You all look to Irene, held close in Mipha's scaly arms just barely able to crack an eye open, raising a shaking hand to point at the distressed redhead, "M-malon... w-we need too..."

"It won't work," Your shadow interjects, "Tch, and I thought only Link was ignorant on magic..." A shadowy form in the shape of the Twili princess materialized on the wall, far from any source of natural light but from its depths you could see the red-yellow eyes wincing, "Take her from this place and all you'll do is take the evil with her, all of nature dying around the witch as it reacts to her suffering. All we'll have managed to do is simply spread the poison and make her far worse."

"But then what're you supposed to do, just let her die?" Malon half-shouts to the shadow.

"She isn't dying, at least the curse isn't killing her," Midna curtly responds, "Normally those who draw power from something are weakened but given you're all so inexperienced it could be just wreaking havoc on her body, but I am only applying my knowledge of magic to this. I'm no scholar and not from this world unlike other's here," She looks to Zelda, who can only shake her head.

"I mean, there are stories of spirits that fit, we saw it happen with Navi but Irene's a Hylian not a spirit," Zelda states, looking to Irene utterly at a loss of what to do, "I didn't even think with the title of Maiden of Forests that..."

"We shouldn't get hung up on the why and focus on what we do know," You interrupt, stepping forward to draw everyone's attention, "We should get Irene into bed, treat it like a fever. Midna, can you figure out if anything at the ranch is cursed?"

"If there was something I would have noticed it, everything here is clean," Midna says as you and Malon assist Mipha in picking up Irene comfortably and carry her to her room.

"I'll stay with you, help manage her fever," You say to Mipha as she lays Irene into bed.

"I can get some rags," Malon adds, before giving a long sad look to the shivering witch, "I thought I understood how low the Gorman's would sink, but if they're responsible for this... for Romani..." She grits her teeth, eyes flaring wide as she practically spits out "We need to bring them to justice! Maybe not today or until Romani's safe, but they can't be allowed to hurt people like this!"

"I agree Malon," You state with a nod, "Though I fear they've unknowingly found a way to keep us at bay," You look back to Irene, Mipha keeping a glowing hand on her forehead, "Gods I hope it's unknowingly..."

Malon gives you a small smile, holding a hand to the centre of her chest, "You'll find a way, I know it. You all won't be alone in this either, I may not know much beyond a pitchfork but you can count on me to do anything for you all," She then looks towards the girl lying in the bed, "and I'll start by helping break Irene's fever."

You give your thanks as Malon leaves before looking back to Mipha, "We'll need to determine what is the exact effect it's having on her... body..." You trail off as you finally notice what Mipha was doing. While she kept one hand over Irene's head it was trembling slightly, her clawed fingers twitching as if ready to ball into a fist. Her other hand was gripping the headboard of the bed, digging her nails into the carved wood with such intensity it was shaving off the wood. Her teeth were bared, making it very clear how jagged and sharp they were as her pupils were contracted into almost invisible slits, "Mipha?"

"It wasn't starvation..." She hisses, not even looking at you or acknowledging your existence in any way. You weren't even sure she heard you, "It wasn't starvation..."

Ah...

"Mipha, it's like Midna said, once we figure out what's going on with everyone's powers we'll be able to work through this. Even when things are bad, we'll look out for each other. Just like you are with Irene-"

Mipha only shakes her head, anger in an instant replaced with utter despair, "I could at any minute join her for all I know," Tears begin to form at the corner of her eyes, "Water... i-if they think to poison the water I'll... What they've done to my home even at the very edges of its lands nearly robbed me o-of the one part of me I s-still love," She takes a shuddering breath before looking away, whispering, "D-did it poison my mind as well? D-did I even have control until they f-found me..?"

"Mipha-"

"I don't know if I can keep my promise to you, to Zelda," Mipha says, straightening up, the tears falling down her cheeks glowing faintly blue before they splashed against Irene's form, Mipha's hand not once leaving the witch's forehead, "I-I can't even return to my home," She looks over to you, shaking her head. You've never seen someone look so at a loss, her head-fins drooping and without any sense of life, "Y-you are our only hope. Everyone... w-we can only rely on you."

You gently put your hands on the Zora's slender shoulders, feeling her tense slightly as she looks down, not meeting your eyes, "I know this has been shocking. Whatever way they try to hurt us we'll find a way to counter, and what we can't prepare for we'll weather it together. There will always be hope."

Mipha nods, but still refuses to meet your gaze. You pull back and she returns to looking over Irene, not saying a word.

You open your mouth to say something but before you can even think of anything to say a knock interrupts your thoughts. You turn, spotting a pair of red eyes under a crimson tattoo staring at you, "Paya?"

"M-master Link? L-lady Mipha?" Came the nervous reply, the eyes disappearing, "M-may I come in?"

"Of course," You say, stepping back from the door to let her come into the room.

Paya enters, shy as ever, her Sheikah tattoo's and hairstyle contrasting sharply with the Hylian dress she was wearing. Yet there was a sag to her shoulders that wasn't there when you saw her before, "I-I'm h-here to help," She says, not looking at you but each word seemed to be followed with a wince, "I-I know I-I'm useless b-but-"

"You're not useless-"

For what you think is the first time you see Paya shake her head in disagreement to you, "I-I'm not like any of you... I-if Irene was so hurt by this i-if a poe shows up..." She pauses, shuddering slightly before continuing, "I-if s-something happens y-you'll need Irene more then m-me..."

"Paya that isn't true-"

Paya just shakes her head, and before you can say anything you hear a voice call from the door, "Link? Can I see you for a minute?"

You turn to see Zelda, shaking her head back and forth rapidly before gesturing at you to follow. You sigh, before saying to your two despondent friends "I'll leave Irene in both your hands then. We'll get through this, alright?"

Mipha and Paya just nod in response. Before you turn to Zelda you kneel down to Irene, taking her hand in your own, "We'll get through this," You repeat, giving it a squeeze. You see Irene's eyes flicker, and you feel her squeeze your hand back, "I promise you all, we'll beat this."

No one in the room responds, and you are lightly tugged out of the room by your tunic. Out in the hall Zelda lets go of you, shaking your head, "I know you want to make them feel better, but they need time," She sighs, "This was a blow to the group's morale and we were already running on fumes. The worst part is no one told us we had this, Irene should have never been in danger."

"This is a pretty big thing to just omit," You say, "If they knew they'd have told us."

"That's the thing Link," Zelda responds, her expression turning serious, "Someone or some group does know, and they know more than even Navi," she shakes her head, looking away, "and every monster sent against us seems to be a part of this. We need information. Hopefully, Midna and I can find something on whatever is hurting Romani and Irene tonight."

"And then..?"

She turns back to you, crimson eyes flashing with determination and a simmering rage as she growls through gritted teeth, "We drive the master sword through its heart."

You are Zelda Saria Ilia Hyrule and let out a low muffled breath as you silently land on a rooftop close to the town hall, having left Link hidden nearby in case things really go south.

"None of the patrolling guards noticed you," You hear Midna whisper in your ear, "My, I can't even hear you breathe with that cloth."

You don't say a word, mind focused on the building ahead and what a building it was. Even in the darkness of night you could make out the magnificent architecture, it's style dating it to 700 years ago, during the classical revival period. The astronomical clock was a wonder of Hylian engineering, neither Goron or Sheikah involved in its construction from the unique and distinctively Hylian style. It was also melancholic in a way, as despite being an ancient design you doubted anyone had the technological skill to recreate it. When it finally stops moving it may never work again and with the empire in charge it'll likely be destroyed, another piece of Hylian history lost forever...

So with your eyes taking in every square inch of history you break into a silent sprint before kicking off the very edge of the roof, sailing through the air above the heads of the guards, hands reaching out, fingers finding purchase on the tiniest outcroppings of stone and mortar. You scramble up, a shadow disappearing out of sight of any on the ground. High above the town now you look out, seeing only the tiniest flickers of lantern light from the guards patrolling. Balancing on the roof with only one foot without even the slightest bit of strain you look over your shoulder to the shadowy form of Midna materializing beside you, her robes drawn tightly around her to conceal her form in darkness.

"I'll look ahead, make sure there's a safe place for you to teleport in," She tells you, her typical playful tone gone and replaced with a deadly serious one just before she winks out, fading through the bars of the belltower as a dark mist.

You wait for a moment, eyes closed as you listen.

Then another.

Then finally There was a shifting in the air, an almost discordant sound as Midna again materialized behind you, "Follow my voice, use your magic to appear where it is."

You give her a silent nod, drawing the teleport Ofuda from your pouch, eyes still closed as you listen. Suddenly a tinkle of laughter, an impish giggle that had fascinated you since you first heard it. Adrenaline suddenly surged, muscles tensing as your eyes shot open, paper charms falling from your hands as they contorted quickly into different shapes. They suddenly lit up, not enough to create a noticeable glow yet your vision turned bright as the air rushed out from you before sucking back in, your feet landing silently onto a wooden floor. Charms drifted down around you, crumbling into ash.

44 Teleportation Charm Packs

"There's no one around, it seems we have the run of the place," Midna says, materializing beside you, "I wouldn't recommend making any noises though, this place is remarkably well surrounded."

"It's where the recently collected taxes are kept, before they probably end up in the Gorman's vaults," You tell her, looking around the interior, it seems you were in a hallway with a few decorative landscape paintings on the wall. Local artists surely, and most likely copies or the ones viewed to be of poor value. You also noticed there wasn't many signs of Imperial crests, mostly the same you'd seen on the merchants and what you assumed were the Gorman's.

You take out your Sheikah Slate, making sure you have the item collection function ready. The plan wasn't even to bother going through every book here. Instead you'd simply grab everything and then bolt, you and Paya going through every document back safely at the ranch.

"So I must ask, as neither you or Link mentioned it but how are you covering your tracks?" Midna suddenly asked, floating near with a curious look, "Surely it'd be good to set this place aflame?"

You shake your head, "That'd be too mundane, magics rare here and none of us look like mages other then Irene, and she's kept it hidden while here. We'd probably be less likely to be suspected."

"This is a strange place then, still if magic is rare then well..." She grins, beckoning to a shadow beside you. A shadowy hand reached out, flexing its claws as it sunk into the wood, "I suppose that means a bit of damage to not waste any time would be appreciated?"

"More than, we have a lot of ground to cover-"

"Including the treasury? As the princess I'm sure there are some long-overdue taxes you are owed~" Midna says with mischief in her eyes, giggling as she lightly pushes off you and floats away as if in water.

"Well," You say with a slight cough, looking away, "We should look everywhere. We don't know where the records we're looking for are kept."

Which lead to the plan. How will you approach this?

The building was constructed with vaulted ceilings, most of the chambers for court and Alderman meetings were below, with the great hall on the second floor where you were.

Plan of the town hall ground floor:
1-vestibule, 2-Trade Hall, 3-Court Chamber, 4- House of Commons,
5- Lord's Office, 6-Council Chamber, 7-Town Scribe's Office, 8-south aisle, 9-tower

plan of the town hall first floor:
1-Great Hall, 2-Council's Senior Offices, 3-Treasury,
4-chapel, 5-Judiciary Chancery, 6-Judiciary Chamber, 7-tower,

The great hall would likely contain locked "Money closets" where documents and other valuables would be kept that wouldn't go into the treasury. However, the town scribe office might have the info you need. The Chancery might also some documents, but they'll likely be related to the interpretation of laws. Admittedly, those might have been useful if you were staying here with Malon, though Impa might be able to provide some context. While you do have some training in law, being a princess and all, you tended to prefer books on frogs and aren't the most well-versed. The other offices might have info, as certainly you doubted that any curse or magical phenomenon would be something anyone could have access too. On the other hand that could also mean it would be kept at the Gorman's manor, wherever that is. There was also the treasury and basement wine cellar, and you would bet rupees on there being a hidden vault in the wine cellar, if not some expensive wines. What could be kept there you couldn't guess, as you have no idea what the Gorman's did with all the items that were here before the empire took over. Anything truly valuable would be kept at their manor.

There was also Midna's suggestion. Whatever old Hylian historical iconography would have probably been removed, so a bit of magical vandalism might help cover your tracks. However going excessive might not be a great idea, especially if it's done for no rhyme or reason. Even deliberately attacking Imperial heraldry would be a bit too obvious. Midna would certainly be silent about it, so while there was a bit of worry of attracting attention from the guards it wasn't a pressing concern. She'll also happily deal with anything locked, as you literally have no idea how to lockpick.

Or perhaps there was a plan you hadn't yet thought of. Or at least a way to approach this intelligently.

YOU ARE ALLOWED TO VOTE FOR MULTIPLE OPTIONS. VOTES WILL BE COUNTED BY GROUP, NOT INDIVIDUALLY.

GM NOTE: I caught a shitty cold.

Also for those curious the layout of this building is based on gothic-style town halls from the 15th century, such as Tallin town hall and Wroclaw town hall. The floor plans are actually the floor plans of Wroclaw town hall.

"We'll just stick to grabbing everything. I don't think we should make it seem like this was a major attack over just a theft," You tell the hovering twili, who raises an eyebrow at your decision, "besides, seeing how barren we leave this place will surely be enough of a cover for our mission."

Midna simply shrugs, "So what will be our first target then? I don't know how you light dwellers design your town halls."

"Let's check the great hall, it should be just around the corner from where we are," You tell her, and begin creeping along the hallway, your feet not even making a whisper as they tread on carpet and old wooden floors. The wonders of Shiekah technology, even if many in Kakariko rejected the true advancements they had made in the past in favour of a more "traditional" lifestyle. Thankfully Claree was more than open to Purah's discoveries, though you couldn't imagine how long it had taken to make this suit, nor the price it had taken to get all the materials for it and there was still so much more that could be done with it.

The Yiga who had attacked had made that very clear just how far behind those among your mother's people who still had good within their hearts were in rediscovering your ancestors' advancements.

As you crept to the large wooden doors that separated you from the great hall you quickly noticed Midna seemed to be taking an interest in your movements, stopping for just a second you hear her whisper in amazement "You're not making a sound, is this some spell or enchantment?"

"Partly, they're made of special noise-reducing cloth, even the armour portions save what few bits of metal I have," You whisper back, "The enchantments are mostly to fool the eyes of anyone I don't want noticing me."

"And it isn't magical?" Midna asks, visibly surprised, "But how? Surely you need magic to accomplish it with so thin a material!"

"Oh it doesn't just stifle noise, it thermoregulates and reacts to the moisture present around it to become waterproof," You happily explain, testing the doors and finding to your relief they weren't locked, "While it won't help me in a jungle, desert or on a mountain much it's quite useful in this part of Hyrule, especially as I can wear it under clothing in case I need to sneak in someplace under watch."

"Hmmm, and I thought it was some sort of fashion for acrobats," Midna says thoughtfully, "It seems there are many strange things about this land."

Suddenly more aware that you were wearing what was essentially a skintight bodysuit under rather tightly fitted flexible armour you cough awkwardly and open the door a bit more hastily then you wanted, "W-well, your fashion i-is quite eye-catching here as well! I have no idea how you get that glow..."

"Oh this," She says, holding out a sleeve of her robe, "It's made of weaved shadows. Far easier to materialize and dematerialize it, though I'm quite accomplished with that. I thankfully kept a few spare clothes and jewellery with me before I ended up here. Though with our journey perhaps I should have kept my entire wardrobe..."

"Weaved shadows?" You ask, making a point to focus on checking the great hall before you entered over examining Midna's clothes, looks like they had moved all the benches and furniture up against the wall leaving the room completely open.

"Oh, all Twili are capable of manipulating shadows around themselves, their tattooed crests shining through it and their fur," Midna explains, defeating your efforts by floating into the room and your eyes follow up her exposed long bluish-grey leg to her slender arms, noting dully the glowing markings on them before you look away, "But it is the height of fashion to recognize the strength of others and wear their efforts, be it jewellery or cloth," You see her smile slightly as she examines her cloth, "The royal court always wished for me to be as covered up as they were, ostentatiously expressing my wealth. But when I was finally allowed to choose how I dressed myself I... could never view myself as greater than those who so graciously provided the jewellery and robes I wear. So I stand before you as they would, showing you the true greatness of the Twili people as they shield me with their strength."

"There's protective enchantments weaved into your clothes!" You say with an amazed whisper, your eyes widening as you begin to trace the symbols on her clothes, their alien designs finally making sense as familiar shapes appeared in them.

She giggles, floating back over to you as her eyes sparkled with amusement, "I thought you'd have realized sooner, yes each thing I wear indeed hides a practical purpose," She then lets out a huff, frowning deeply, "As much as I hate to admit it though I wish that I had instead left myself to paranoia and at least asked to weave in more powerful protective charms to the outfits I carry with me regularly. It has been... taxing to see so often my own blood spilt..."

With that statement your amazement vanishes, and a dark thought enters your mind that spoils any joy you had from learning about this new culture, "I suppose we must look quite gaudy to you Midna..." You mutter.

"Oh don't be silly, I'm not so blind even with the hated light to not see how your people shiver around fires and the danger we're so often in," She replies, waving a hand dismissively, "I'll judge over your people's actions, not appearances."

"And how would you judge ripping open that cabinet over there likely filled with valuables?" You ask, pointing to the money closet built into the wall.

"Oh quite fondly," Midna responded with a savage grin, holding up a hand with fingers outstretched like a claw as a large shadowy duplicate emerged from the darkness.

The claw sinks into the wood, buckling it with a loud crack that makes both you and Midna wince and pause to listen if there was any hurried movement. When there was none Midna carefully peeled the door open, giving you your first look inside. You were surprised to see only some documents and ledgers, along with some worthless pewter dishes. You did notice some pewter mugs, cheaply made with the emblems of the same crest you'd seen everywhere and a pewter ewer again with that same crest. There was some simple cloth embroidered again with that crest but you could instantly tell it was worthless and you were hardly well-versed in the value of items.

"Remarkably little of value..." You hear Midna observe with a mutter.

"The documents might provide something, maybe a ledger or notes on meetings in the great hall," You reply, waving the Sheikah slate over it and watching the books and documents crumble into motes of blue light that were sucked into the eye.

"Perhaps some of the carvings are of value?" Midna asks, gesturing around the room.

You squint in the darkness, and indeed you notice metal and wooden versions of the crests seemed to be nailed to parts of the wall, conveniently over terribly plastered sections. In fact, looking around closer it seemed there were many parts that either visibly had something removed or was covered up with cheap looking crests of the Gorman's. The tapestries decorating the walls were all poorly made and instead marked with the same crests rather than any scenes from Hyrule's past you'd expect from tapestries from such an ancient and well-made building. Only in the statues and tiny wood carvings was it apparent the old work. Intricately carved knights on armoured horses and cattle decorated the designs and no matter how much they've been worn away or had terrible crests nailed to them you could still make out the crest of your family emblazoned on their armour and shields. Nearing a wood panel, you could even make out a crest, intricately carved into the wood that depicted heraldry depicting cattle and not just any knight but Royal knights together under the triforce and your crest. You'd seen similar at the ranch, and you instantly recognized it as Malon's family's coat of arms.

Malon's family was one that traced its line back to the Hylian knights of old, the true origins of the royal knights who had served your family. Heroism, chivalry and legend surrounded her line, etched into the land and buildings. Yet a conscious effort was made now to erase it to make way for corruption and greed. All legitimacy she had over this land had steadily been erased, and you suspect what wealth had been here the Gorman's had pillaged.

No... something wasn't right with what you'd found out about her history. Though horses were everywhere in this hall why had Malon grown up with only a single foal? Both of you were shocked as you considered it yet here in this hall the mystery was made even more plain with how dominant they were even defaced by the Gorman's. What had happened here?

With little else here of value you and Minda make your way into the chancery. A simple room with some locked cabinets and desks with chairs, snuffed out candles and lamps scattered about. Midna quickly goes to each one, instead using a more precision blast of shadowy magic to blow open the locks to which you hastily absorbed every document you could find into the Sheikah slate. The Judiciary chamber itself didn't have anything of interest. In fact, it looked almost disused though the chancery itself seemed quite full. In fact, even the furniture looked positively worthless, had the Gorman's really pillaged everything of value?

Stepping into the chapel itself you see the first thing of value. A small statue of the empire's idea of the fierce deity, small enough to be carried about by hand, a nice looking cloth covering the table and an offering bowl. Even smaller statuettes surrounded them, four in total each clearly carved with a stylized appearance of one of the four major goddesses of Hyrule. The furniture was all worthless as you checked them over, and any implements for burning incense also looked cheap. Yet as you looked them over you turned back to see Midna examining the bare-chested god.

"What manner of god is this?" Midna asks, sounding genuinely curious for a change.

"It's how the empire thinks the fierce diety looks," You scoff, walking up to it with your sheikah slate out. Before you may have hesitated but now you just couldn't muster any effort to care- You stop, realizing something you never mentioned to Midna, "Oh no, I can't believe I never-"

"Link certainly doesn't seem like someone who'd need to compensate with his self-image. Hehe, I wonder if he gets flustered with how people expect him to look, that would be something I'd like to see~" Midna giggles mischievously to herself, an evil-looking grin on her face.

You, however, were doing your best impression of a fish, "O-oh... you already know. G-good, I didn't want to make it look like we were hiding it but so much kept coming up..."

Midna looks over to you, her expression looking as though she just remembered you were there, "Oh? That's quite a thing to just not mention. I'd have thought you'd all be crowing about him, especially considering how your people seem to regard him."

You let out a long sigh, not responding or looking to Midna for a moment as you take everything of value from the room before quietly saying, "I... We just prefer to know him as Link..."

Midna doesn't respond for a moment, and as you finish you notice she bore a pensive expression before quietly falling in behind you as you moved to the real room of interest, the treasury.

Documents lined the walls, all tax records that you quickly scooped up. There were desks covered in weights and scales, for what you weren't sure as the value of Rupees was incredibly apparent. Taxes, as you understood them (you did spend half of your life in a hidden village), were collected by the local lord from the peasants, the local guilds who bought up the produce and other resources produced, the specialists who produced goods and the merchant guilds who would buy and sell these goods and resources. This was, of course, a very simplified explanation since admittedly you were no expert on Hyrule's taxes, nevermind Imperial ones. What you did know for certain was that Rupees made a tithe of goods for taxes virtually impossible, yet there seemed plenty of implements in this room for measuring the value of stuff. Did some mercantile business happen here, why was it not downstairs in the trade hall?

You leave the scales, simple things that they were they likely wouldn't fetch any value other than as scrap metal, instead moving in front of the door that you were certain lead to the tower treasury of this place, the Twili princess standing beside you.

"I realize," You say as you stare at the door, apprehensive, "That I've probably ruined the town with all the documents I've taken and by taking what's in this vault I've secured its fall. It claws at me, yet something at the back of my mind tells me to keep doing this."

"I doubt any of them have any true free will," Midna responds, peering at you from the corner of her eye, "it's unlikely any even had a choice to live here given what Malon has told us."

"You're right, perhaps we might even be giving them a clean slate forward," You say, gesturing to the door, "Open it."

Midna doesn't even hesitate, a blast of magic obliterating the lock separating you from the treasury. The door opened only slightly from the force of the spell, leaving you to pull it open and step inside. It was remarkably sparse, just a simple room with a candle holder, a few slit windows and two wooden shelves upon which were stacked some chests and baskets. Each chest was locked but labelled, so it didn't take much to figure out what was inside them. The baskets were more interesting, piled high with expensive-looking cloth. Most interesting of all you spot a tapestry, folded neatly in a corner.

"Midna, could you help me fold that tapestry out? I want to try and peg its value," You ask the Twili, who gives a small grin and with a snap of her fingers the tapestry shoots up into the air and unfurls.

What you see stops your heart.

A beautiful Hylian woman with long blonde hair wearing a plain white dress with voluminous sleeves, designed with the utmost care stared back to you with eyes you could just make out maybe had a trace of gold to them. An ornate golden crown, affixed with red rubies sat atop her head, leaving no room to doubt who this person was supposed to be. The flag of the empire was wrapped around her, one delicate-looking arm reaching towards the hand of a figure clad in armour, much older looking than the girl in the picture and not Hylian, with reddish-brown hair upon which was placed another crown takes her hand delicately, though the tapestry did not have the skill of a painter it was obviously with how he seemed to look match many of the portraits of married couples you'd seen. To the right of this man was a large cavalry, led by another armoured and crowned figure you recognize as the emperor. To the left flowed armed soldiers and uniformed workers, stern-faced men who marched forward without looking towards the viewer. In fact, only the girl in the centre seemed to look towards the observer. Around the edges were olive leaves and flowers, entwined with symbols of the empire.

What cements your disgust though is the words clearly written at the bottom of the tapestry; "The lost Princess returns to spread the Empire's light."

"They seem to be expecting you... a much taller you," Midna observes with a chuckle, before she sees your expression, "Ah... I take it the enemy exonerating you is-"

"It isn't exoneration, the empire can't see to decide if I'm some martyr or prophecised saint for their wretched propaganda," You snap, wincing slightly as you see Midna recoil, anger and regret churning in your gut.

"Shall I burn it?"

You wave your Sheikah Slate, absorbing it, "It's valuable, as much as I would love too."

"There's more to this isn't there, you hate being used don't you?" Midna asks expectantly, suddenly rather close to you, looking you directly in the eyes with a grin. Her tone was oddly admiring, as though such wilfulness was a quality she respected. But you couldn't lie to her.

"No one who knows me wants to use me for anything," You respond and it bothers you how dead your tone is, unable to reconcile the thoughts whirling through your head with how you're speaking, "Who I am is not what anyone wants, but the lies... sicken me. How could anyone create such myth-"

"While looking down with such cold pity in their eyes..." Midna mumbles, looking away with gritted teeth and shaking fists.

But something finally clicks for you. You take a step towards Midna, a dawning awareness that seems to be flowing from your right hand, eyes widening as details you had dismissed finally coalesce into a single clear image as this power spurs you on to speak and say the fateful words you only now realize how much you've longed to say to someone, "You're like me, aren't you?"

Midna looks at you with confusion, then realization before finally terror seems to settle on her. She backs away, a step then another before vanishing completely.

"Midna?!" You cry out, desperation in your voice, "I-I'm sorry, I didn't mean to push you! It's just... I've waited so long for someone... E-even if we're in danger I-"

Midna doesn't return, and with a falling heart you finish up gathering the valuables and return back to the great hall. You're a fool, just to suddenly say-

"D-do... do you do things you're so proud of but they look at it with disappointment or irritation?" A quiet voice suddenly asks you, stopping you dead in your tracks.

You nod profusely, not turning around, "N-nothing is right, even as I do as they ask! I can't be... I thought they'd be proud..."

There's a sigh and you feel a back press into your own, separated only by a robe and your armour, "I... my mother died when I was so young I can't recall her. I was kept separate from others, prefered it. What mattered more than the gardens, the animals and magic?"

As Midna spoke though you did not see her cast swirling ethereal birds and wolves of species you couldn't recognize whirled past you, dancing in the air before vanishing into motes of light. "Yet my tutors," Midna continued, her voice pained, "They hovered over me, corrected me. I'd do as they say and do it wrong in ways I couldn't fathom. They'd give me looks I couldn't understand, concern that seemed so misplaced..."

You look over your shoulder and see Midna had brought her bare knees up to her chin, hugging them tightly as her robes fell loosely around her form, "As I grew I was brought before others, told to make friends. I chattered away, told them about all I loved. I joined in their laughter about some fool. It took me so long to realize I knew none of them as I stepped away and I was the fool..."

She straightened up slightly, her voice prideful "But I had my garden, my magic. I pushed on, even when my father passed. I was so confident I could lead my people, my magic was the strongest after all. But when the time came... I was told I wasn't ready. When I'm more mature, they told me. So I languished, a limbo that seemed endless even as I tried to grow. In the mirror I'd tell myself to grow tall, become the leader my people needed until one day I noticed a girl did not look back at me."

There was a rustle as Midna lowered her legs, floating with her head bowed, "Filled with confidence I approached the regency council. Yet I was told the same, told to return to my garden with the same tone I had been when I was a child. I bristled... convinced there was malice afoot. Yet... all I could see from them was pity..."

She shot up straight, so quickly she actually pushed you away as she whirled on you, "But here I can prove myself worthy, prove myself that I can protect and lead my people like my father did! With the deity..." She shakes her head, "With this journey, none would doubt me!"

You look to her for a moment, before giving a small smile, "I admire you Midna, I truly do. You speak your mind, are so much more wilful then I could ever be... I'll help you, I believe you can prove yourself."

Midna blushes as she looks away, an odd colour so different from life you're used to but familiar all the same, smiling. But then her shoulders slump, her eyes downcast as she asks with a sad voice, "I was told getting your problems off your chest helps... but it... hurt to speak of it..." She tells you as she puts a hand on her chest.

"It always does... but..." You smile slightly, "It feels good to have a friend..."

"It does..." She responds, "Could... could you keep this between us?"

"Of course!"

She smiles and the two of you make your way towards the council offices, two princess's side by side...

++++
The Lord's office was well decorated, with a nice wooden desk and shelves, nice rugs and expensive-looking paintings. One was of the Emperor, two others were what you realize were the Gorman's. They were identical Hylian men, even if you didn't know if they were twins or not. The only real difference was one wore red and blue while the other wore purple and yellow. They had potbellies and ridiculously large moustaches underneath a quite prominent nose, their brown hair even in this idealized painting badly hiding they were balding. Their outfits showcased a quite prominent ruff, which while in others showcased wealth made them look more like clowns. Really with how much they seemed to have spent on the painting you could probably get some rupees from a collector despite the subject matter, certainly of the emperor. The other paintings were those of the surrounding countryside, painted in such a way it weirdly did not show the Lon-Lon ranch. The last two were a framed map of the empire and a framed map of the local countryside, Lon Lon ranch inexplicably in a corner despite her still owning most of the land around here.

You loot it all, though to your disappointment you find no documents. The same was with the council offices, the room had been completely abandoned, with only a desk and some shelves there. It was utterly bizarre.

More strange was the scribe's office. The desk lay barren and the books that lined the walls were covered in dust and cobwebs. You took them all though, any scrap of info that could give you a clue would be a benefit.

"I believe that's every room of value, isn't it?" Midna asks, darkness spreading to the windows as you were now on the ground floor.

"We should check the wine cellar, I'm certain there's a vault!" You proclaim, "In fact with how sloppy they've been there might be pre-imperial stuff down there!"

Midna nods, eyes lighting up with the same desire for treasure your's were as the two of you hastily made your way downstairs. The cellar was also mostly empty, yet there was still a fair amount of wine though none of any good vintage.

As the wine was all removed you try and peer behind the wine racks, trying to make out anything until Midna exclaims "I think there's something behind this one! Should I pull it out?"

"We're in the cellar so no one will hear us, rip it apart!"

Midna nods, before with a blast of magic the wine rack is obliterated sending bits of wood scattering across and revealing a metal door, a combination lock set underneath a handle. Midna waves her hand and a claw shoots out from the shadows and rips the metal door off with an almost deafening screech of metal, tossing the door into the far side of the cellar.

You peer in, a wide grin splitting your face as the smell of paint and wonderfully well-treated wood hit your nostrils. "Haha!" You laugh, "Paintings! Oh these must be worth a fortune. Come come Midna, let's see our prize!"

Midna nods, and with a wave of her hand one of the paintings floats out, revealing the masterwork for the both of you.

It wipes the smile off your faces instantly.

A large portly Hylian man with a bald head looks out at you, dopey looking yet the muscles clearly visible through his clothes showed a life of intense labour despite the pounds he'd put on. The large brown muttonchop moustache did nothing to hide his rather prominent nose. Beside him, clad in a purple and white dress was a woman with long flowing red hair, so familiar yet different, her smile kind. In front of the man, a muscular hand upon her shoulder was a smiling Romani, full of life and joy in sharp contrast to how she was now. In the woman's arms however was a small babe, a tiny tuft of red hair telling you the real identity of "Romani" as you stepped back, feeling as though you had treaded into something deeply personal.

"What do we-" Midna begins, but you cut her off by absorbing all the paintings into your Sheikah Slate, the painting exploding into motes of blue light.

"Malon... we deliver them all to Malon," You state as you begin to walk up the stairs, trying and failing to put away the image of the smiling child and all the horror and injustices that had been inflicted on her since that had been painted.

Yet as you strode up onto the first floor you heard voices, concerned but not alarmed. Midna vanishes, and you rush for the stairs, silently darting up to the second floor and one of the open windows just as you hear the large wooden doors open. You leap up and slide your way out of it, hands scrambling for purchase on the roofs tiles as you hoist yourself up before sprinting up the roof and leaping across to a nearby building just as you begin to hear shouts.

Heart hammering in your chest you leap across the roofs you can scarcely breathe until you spot a familiar green tunic loitering in the darkness at the edge of town.

You jump down, making him jump and reach for his sword before Link relaxes as you quickly walk up to him, Midna appearing beside you.

"Did you get what you need-" He begins to ask.

"We need to move, they realized there was a theft," You cut him off. He nods and silently beckons you to follow him as he leads you away from town but not directly towards the ranch. Shadows surround you, deepening until they seemed to be endless voids. It took you some time to get back and exhaustion was beginning to pull at you even as you constantly were looking over your shoulder if there were any pursuers. Reaching the ranch you felt a palpable sense of relief, the lantern light flickering from the windows. As you all approach the door is swung open, Malon standing there in a thin white smock with a loose blanket thrown over her shoulders. The look on her face mirrored your own relief as she hurried you all inside, slamming the door shut behind you.

"You're all safe, you didn't get caught did you?" She asks breathlessly.

"We're fine, no pursuers," Link says, stepping past to give you all some room.

"We stole everything that seemed of value, everything about that place seemed odd but there must be something in the books there," You say, glancing to Midna who floated past, giving you a nod before vanishing into a shadow.

Malon gives a nod of acknowledgement, "I'm just glad you're all safe. If any of you need anything I can get a kettle going or..." She, stops looking closely at you, "You look like death warmed over your maj- Zelda, I could help you get to bed..."

That... would be a good opportunity to discuss what you found, though Malon seemed so worried about you was it really the right time? You could also check up on Irene, Paya and Mipha. Or you could start on those books and hopefully find something worthwhile.

[] Talk with Malon, discuss the paintings

"I could use a hand with my armour," You say after a moment, before sighing, "And... there's something we found there you'd find important."

Malon looks at you confused for a moment before she recognizes what you mean. "A-alright, I understand," She tells you, her expression grim. She reaches out towards you, putting her hand on your shoulder, "Just... If I-" Malon begins before cutting herself off as she pulls her hand back, looking at it with a bit of disgust. As Malon rubs her fingers with her thumb she makes a grimace of disgust, one you share when you see it covered in dust and splinters.

"Apologies, we had to... be creative," You say, trying to not make much of a mess by accidentally brushing off the dust and grime you were covered in.

"And by creative...?" Malon asks, raising an eyebrow.

"We ripped or blasted every lock open with magic," You mumble, not meeting her eyes, "I'm sorry, I really should have followed through with my lessons. Even beings stealthy we made quite the mess, and they're probably on high alert rather than discovering in the morning. We're safe, but it was an unnecessary risk..."

Malon only chuckles, shaking her head, "Only a Princess would apologize for tracking in dirt into a farmhouse," She looks up to you, a warm expression on her face, "I'll heat up some water and find some towels, help you get cleaned up before you keel over."

You nod, swaying slightly as you feel your eyelids starting to get heavy. But a pit settles into your stomach and you hesitantly say, "B-but first... you need to see what I found."

Malon gulps, before giving you a nod in return and then silently leaves you to fill up a bowl with hot water. It isn't too long before she returns holding it and some towels and rags and none too soon, you were already beginning to nod off. The two of you share a look before with grim expressions you both make your way up to your room, with you stumbling a little as exhaustion began taking its toll. Your room was a rather spacious guest room, well carpeted with a dresser, a closet, a small bedside table with a lamp and chest next to a decently comfortable bed. A large mirror and folding dressing screen were in the corner, next to a simple ink-stained desk with a well-worn chair.

You take a seat on the chair as Malon takes the bed after setting the bowl and towels on the desk, nervously pawing at her smock as she looks at you uncertain for a moment before she calms herself, her resolute expression telling you of her decision, "Alright, tell me what you found."

"Paintings, one is..." You swallow, your throat feeling dry, you knew how this news would feel to Malon, "Of your mother, father and both you and your sister."

Malon's eyes close, her expression one of deep pain and sorrow. She stays like that for a few moments before she lets out a long breath and looks up to you, teeth gritted as though you're about to pull an arrow from her. "Show me," She tells you, her tone resolute.

You give a silent nod and begin tapping away at your Sheikah Slate. Then with a flash and a loud THUNK the wooden frame of the painting hits the floor and you need to throw out a hand to steady it.

Malon doesn't make a sound, though you do hear the bed creak slightly as she stands up. Stuck behind the painting you couldn't see her face so you clamber up onto your knees, awkwardly holding the painting the entire time as you peer over.

"I... don't remember this," Malon says, tilting her head slightly as she looks at this, "I must have stood still for hours but... I don't recall it..."

Malon shakes her head, looking away from the painting, "Please, send it away."

You don't hesitate, balancing it with your shoulder as you tap away at your slate before it vanishes into motes of blue light. Malon had fallen back to the bed, holding her head with both hands.

"Malon?" You ask with concern, stepping carefully off the chair.

"I'm fine, I'm f-fine..." She says, waving an arm at you and giving a good look at her eyes, they were red and puffy, "I... just give me a second."

You nod, "It's alright, here I can manage on my own if you need to-"

"No... no, I'm good," Malon says, sniffling and rubbing her eyes for a second before composing, "No I'm alright and just... I'd like to just do something, okay?"

You nod and step in front of the mirror and begin untying the plates on your arms before throwing off the cloak and scarf into the corner of the room. Malon steps forward and kneels down so that you only saw the top of her head, untying the armour from your legs as she occasionally brushed the hair out of her face. She gravitated first to pulling off the Suneate armour on your shins, tossing it aside before unwrapping the cloth you used to tie down the thigh guards you wore. Once done with that Malon carefully began peeling back the fabric to remove your boots which which resembled flexible leather Kutsu riding boots with thick soles with adjustable straps, however they were so tightly fitted they conformed to your feet like an acrobat shoes and had the back of your heel and toes exposed, revealing your Tabi toe socks. This gave you an impressive amount of flexibility and you had the skill to hang from a wire by your toes, though did give the impression you were wearing sandals instead of boots. Malon seemed a bit annoyed as she tried to yank it off, but your Sheikah training stopped you from losing your balance.

As you unwrapped the cloth on your arms you considered how long it actually took to put on your armour, hardly quickly thrown on armour for disappearing in an instant, though if you were willing to untangle it relatively easy to quickly peel off, the stretchy fabric made it simple if a bit frustrating at times. Malon, having finished pulling the armour of your legs off, thankfully was taking care of the thicker flexible outer Dou plate that stretched from chest to groin in the front, with now loose sections covering a good way down your outer thighs but only covered down to your waist in the back and left your inner thighs exposed. You feel her fumbling with the complex hidden straps on your back something even Paya had trouble with. You reach behind yourself to help, noting with a bit of amusement to see Malon's eyebrows shoot up at your flexibility as you help unlatch the armour. Finally, you were free of it and Malon helpfully chucks it into the corner with the rest of your growing pile of armour, leaving you standing there in your body-glove.

This seems to completely confuse Malon, as she starts looking you over and prodding you to find a way to take it off you. Her expression of complete bafflement was so amusing you couldn't help but giggle as you showed her the straps hidden near your collar and down towards your waist, carefully unbuttoning them as you pulled your arms from your sleeves and let the whole thing hang limply from your hips. Some part of you brought to mind images of reptiles shedding their skin as it flopped around uselessly while Malon tugged lightly at the sarashi around your chest, examining it with interest for reasons you had a good assumption of but quickly averted your eyes from, a heat spreading from your cheeks to your ears. You distract yourself by immediately focusing on the body-glove, quickly yanking it to your ankles before lifting your foot up to your chest while balancing on the other where you quickly pull it off, leaving the suit inside out and hanging off one leg but sparing you embarrassment. It was roughly around this moment that you remember you weren't wearing your fundoshi.

Malon ignores your face and ears turning a bright crimson as she bends down to pull your body-glove from your foot, straightening it out as you reluctantly begin to remove your sarashi. Shivering slightly in the slightly cool house you stand there, rubbing your arms as Malon sets the chair and towels around you, before bringing the end table beside you upon which she set the bowl of warm water. You expect her to have you take a seat but instead you see her bend down and to your great surprise, which you see clearly in your reflected expression as your eyebrows shoot up to your hairline and in your deepening blush, Malon's smock is tossed casually onto your bed. Your brain quickly rationalizes that Malon simply didn't want to get her sleeping clothes wet but... something in the back of your head told you that maybe she just didn't want you to be alone; exposed and vulnerable as you were. You were quite the pathetic sight in the mirror and she could easily rest her chin on top of your head, you might as well have been a doll to her with how pale you were.

Your eyes take in details. Some the same as the ones you take in with your friends in the baths or with Link and the others in those quiet precious moments. The ones that make you feel shame, regret and those that quicken the heart and tie your stomach into knots as they fill your mind with mindnumbing terror. But others you just... note, as though they were clues leading to a conclusion just out of your grasp. The sharp contrast between pale and tanned skin, the clear and pronounced muscles under a smattering of freckles that told of long hours of labour even if you could see the faint outline of ribs under too tightly stretched skin, the toll of malnutrition on full display. Strong and calloused hands, rough yet warm against your skin, suddenly reach up and grip your shoulders as they hold you steady, cerulean eyes looking you and your reflection up and down before they darken slightly with sorrow, a quiet pained sound escaping from Malon's lips.

Guided as if by a voice whispering in your ear you follow Malon's gaze to the reflection before you and the figure held in her hands. You were small, a tiny frail thing and oh so young looking. You note dully in your head that you had only had your birthday shortly before Link pulled you from the river. The doll comparison was apt, your skin was so pale it might as well have been porcelain, your limbs fragile and thin as though they'd break at the slightest touch. Or... not quite the more you look. It surprises you slightly to see muscles on your frame even as thin as you are, eyes drawn to your stomach, legs and arms as you compared them to Malon's. You'd always been more of the... academic persuasion, when had the journey changed you?

You look up to the face of your mirrored doppelganger, doe-eyed and framed by a long veil of light-blonde hair, barely hiding the deep bags under your eyes. You stare at that face for a few moments, thinking. You didn't see it, never thought of it but you'd certainly heard so many people stop to gasp about your supposed beauty when you didn't opt to have your face hidden by a hood. It had long past reached the point of unnerving you though you weren't exactly alone in that, your friends tended to get similar callouts now that you think about it. So many claiming to have their breath taken away as you'd all ride past. Yet when you had truly ever felt such a thing it was those times you saw your friends laugh and smile, joy in their hearts, something that seemed so fleeting nowadays...

Your eye's finally meet your doppelganger's, their clear red depths staring back into yours. You could see so many emotions in them, many you dared not acknowledge out loud. Not with Malon here, not yet... But what had made Malon cry out as she looked to the mirror? You look again, letting your eyes adjust to the low light cast by the lantern Malon had lit and set on your dresser and finally, you saw.

Mipha's healing while powerful was hardly perfect and though faint the horrors you had experienced in the few months since you'd been reunited with Link had written their mark all over your flesh. Thick, jagged claw marks as numerous monsters had tried and nearly succeeded in disembowelling you marred your chest and stomach, one set stretching from waist to shoulder with each mark wide enough that you wondered how you had survived. Patterns of indented flesh, paler than the skin around it marked where maces and clubs dug into your flesh, cracking bone with pain you began to recall, reliving each blow with such vivid intensity you could feel tears begin to form. Odd markings, ones that matched no weapon, reminded you of how you were slammed into stone by a limb the size of a treetrunk, your entire back likely bearing the mark where the force had ruptured your skin, broken bone and spine bursting free from the force which would have crippled you if you hadn't died outright and only by sheer luck you had swallowed a potion that kept you fighting. How could you have survived that and moments later still be running around, even with the potion? Then again, you'd seen Mipha reconstruct Paya's lung after she'd been stabbed by the Yiga, the sword had pierced all the way through her. Yet the power of healing magic gave no comfort as you saw the crisscrossing lines where blades had sliced through you, rending flesh from bone or arrows had embedded themselves so deep you weren't sure how you didn't have metal still in you. Each mark gave you a white-hot flash of pain as you recalled how you got them yet so many you couldn't, had combat become so routine that you'd stopped noticing? In just a few months you'd become so scarred by your journey were it not for healing magic you should have long since died. Worst of all you could see still the scars of what started it all still, the first mark of your foolishness and endangerment of all you love spreading out from a single recessed point like tightly packed tree roots. But you could still see the rotting, disgusting skin you, in the darkest parts of your mind as your flesh burned and writhed at night, began to believe you deserved to suffer from.

Sometimes you still did, as you saw your friends brutalized every other day. When you saw the pain, despair and regret plainly written on their faces. As you heard them dream at night, crying out in despair and terror as the nightmares followed them into their dreams. As you heard how you had left their lives while you hid in the village. You stared and stared and stared, committing each mark to memory so even when magic had made them all fade away you would still remember them. Each mark you deserv-"HEEE?!"

You yelp in surprise as strong arms suddenly wrap around you, pulling you tightly against Malon as she buries her face into your shoulder, holding you in a tight hug. Thoughts whirl in your head, trying to make sense of what she was doing but as your shoulder begins to feel wet you understand, your expression falling as you bow your head. "Please... don't cry Malon..." You murmur, your stomach churning, an acidic pain racing up your throat.

"Gods if I'd only known..." Malon says back to you, muffled slightly, "Nothing should have hurt you like this..."

You stay silent for a moment, thinking over what to say before finally, you manage to speak, slowly and from the depths of your heart, "What's happened to me is nothing compared to what others have suffered. If what I have to endure means my friends and loved ones, my people, any innocent get to live happy and unharmed I would bare it tenfold," You look back into the mirror with half-lidded eyes, regarding your scarred form coldly, "You are all so much more deserving of happiness..."

Malon looks up from your shoulder, reducing her grip slightly. Then she sighs, eye closed for a moment until she speaks, looking at your reflection with a small smile, "And that's why I'll serve you, your majesty."

Your eyes shoot open, ears going slightly red as you shake your head, "W-wait what? But I-"

Malon gives your reflection a flat look, "All this time in your head you were going, "I'm worthless because others get hurt" or some other self-doubtful thing, right?"

You hang your head.

"Knew it, farm girl's intuition," She gives you a smile, "You care so much about people, wanting to help them however you can. You throw yourself into hardship for them. I can tell you're in a dark place, but I won't encourage you on some self-destructive path. Because I know you're clever, neither naive or recklessly endangering others. Even when you're down and stumbling you never ignore how your actions affect others in the short and long run."

Your head lifts back up slowly, blinking slightly as you stare into the reflection of Malon's azure eyes.

"People always spoke about how great you are, even before the empire," Malon shakes her head, chuckling to herself, "You know, I wanted to be a lady-in-waiting for you, tending to your needs as I basked in your holiness and grace. I dreamed of being waited on hand and foot by brave knights seeking to earn your favour who may one day sweep me off my feet," Malon tells you, shifting her hands to your shoulders again, "But even though it came with so much sorrow, so much pain... I'm glad I could be friends with the tiny, troubled girl in front of me. Who even as she doubts and hurts everyone turns too not because she's some dumb princess, but because she's more than proved she's someone worth listening too."

You close your eyes as if wincing, "I'm not like how people think I am-"

Your eyes shoot open as you feel Malon painfully pinch your cheek, the farm girl leaning down slightly to put herself at eye-level with you, "So you're not some scarred warrior-scholar who spends way too long at night looking at that weird glowing book and constantly beats herself up?"

"Err... well...OWOWOWOWOWOW-!"

Malon thankfully lets go of your cheek, which you rub with a pout. You turn around and face Malon, who was shaking her head with her hands on her hips. "Honestly," She says, "With what you found for me, how could I not want to follow you?"

You blink, "The... painting-?"

Malon grins at you, "Hope."

You shrink in on yourself, your cheeks and ears burning at Malon's words. She seems to realize your embarrassed state and gently seats you down, leaning your head over the bowl, your blonde hair dipping into the bowl as she begins to rinse it. It was relaxing as her hands deftly ran through your hair, as well as Paya does for you when she offers. As you see yourself in the mirror the reflection, if only for a moment shifts to not a poor farmhouse but a room of absolute luxury as Malon, your friend, tends to you not with warmed well water but with scented soaps recalled as if from a half-forgotten dream, as the others speak to you of the days schedule, what you and them together needed to do. For a moment you let this fantasy linger in front of your closed eyes, reflected in the mirror's surface before you cast it away, burying it. It was the first time in a long while you had even considered indulging in such a selfish fantasy.

But it was a fantasy, you didn't know if you would ever be close to that again.

Though one part of that you felt yourself yearning for, more than anything.

To be with your friends, who believed in you so strongly...

You are Link. Last nights heist had proven a complete success and come morning Zelda and Paya had locked themselves in a room to decipher all the documents they had gathered. But while Mipha tended to Irene and Romani while Midna hid from the light work quickly piled up. Which left you and Malon alone to tend to all the chores on the ranch and today was a scorcher. It was so hot that by noon you had removed your shirt regardless of any sunburn risk and collapsed again the side of the barn, the wood you had agreed to chop up for firewood beside you unchopped. Figuring to get two birds with one stone you lift up the heavy log with one arm, adjust the strap holding the sheathed master sword and make your way towards the well.

To your great surprise you see Malon there, and not alone. A carriage had pulled up and four women were now interacting with Malon. Two of them were armed, though only one wore significant armour while the other you summarized was the driver of the carriage. The more armoured of the two was a rather severe-looking woman with dark red hair cut just short of the shoulders. The other wore her dark hair in a pony-tail and seemed much more at ease. They wore simple uniforms, detailing a crest you weren't familiar with. The other, a maid by the looks of things wore a simple if well made black dress, with a white apron and kerchief over her hair. She looked rather demure, chestnut hair cut to the shoulders and was in the process of closing up a chest you recognize as one magically enchanted to refrigerate its contents. The one in charge was an obvious noblewoman with long purple-black hair and green eyes with a thin though eye-catching frame, wearing a bored expression. She wore a golden headdress with blue sapphires set in it, making it obvious she came from wealth if her dress didn't give it away. It was you assumed Imperial fashion, the blue dress lacking any shoulder or back coverage. It was stretched to its limit in a rather noticeable manner and was kept in place by a ring attached to a gold necklace resembling two large leaves coming together at another polished sapphire. Two thin gold chains extended from this necklace and drapped over her shoulders. Golden, sapphire inlaid armlets held up white, fingerless gloves while a richly decorated sash with oddly familiar designs was tied around her wide hips, completing the whole affair.
What strikes you as odd though was that they were all Hylians, though it shouldn't have surprised you something about their clothing screamed that they weren't simply Imperial appointed nobility even with the fashion sense. More while the guard looked the oldest they all looked close to your's and Malon's ages. As she was not surrounded by dozens of guards you suspect the noblewoman was low nobility, but the amount of wealth she was wearing was staggering. You weren't like Zelda and could identify the history of items from a mere glance but you'd been alongside the scholar princess long enough to realize you were standing near someone from old Hylian nobility. You were bad enough in accidentally appearing like a knight and you curse yourself for leaving the master sword strapped to your back but Zelda was so obviously of an old Hylian bloodline and utterly ethereal when she had actually gotten more then two hours of sleep if they knew even from hearsay Princess Zelda was born with red Sheikah eyes her identity would be almost definitely exposed. So you stood there, the gravity of the situation weighing down on you.

That and they had all turned to look at you with expressions that surprised you for a second. The noblewoman looked quite taken aback and was openly looking you up and down, her eyes lingering on your bare chest. The severe-looking guard was pointedly looking away, though her ears had turned bright red. The more carefree one was cocking her head to the side, nodding with a grin. The maid meanwhile had covered her eyes, though you could see her peeking through her fingers. Malon meanwhile was as red as her hair and was slowly leaning forward at a rate that suggested she would soon fall over as the pouch she was holding falls to the ground, revealing it positively full of Rupees.

"I... hope I'm not interrupting anything?" You say, setting down the large log you were carrying.

Instantly, the hold your appearance has over them breaks, and Malon and the noblewoman both shoot up ramrod straight. Malon pointedly coughs and doing her best not to look directly at you tells you, "It's, ahem, quite alright Link, I was just uhm... finishing an unexpected business transaction. What were you doing?"

"I was... going to get some water and then chop up the log for some firewood? The axe is right there," You say, pointing to the axe leaning against the house, "That alright..?"

"Yes."

"Sure."

"Absolutely."

"Of course."

"Do as you must"

Riiiight. So giving a side-eye you begin to make your way to the wheel, lowering the bucket into the cold water below as the noblewoman begins speaking to Malon, her accent as well rather familiar, "Well, as I was saying the duke my family serves under is well known for collecting objects and knowledge belonging to the Hylian royal family, may they rest easily. Why I heard they've maintained one of the old palaces as a museum though they let no one visit. It's no surprise though, they were one of the few families to maintain their noble rank when the empire took over," She happily gossips with Malon, the bored expression the noblewoman wore disappearing slightly though from the lack of reaction it was one the servants had heard regularly.

Malon for her part quickly focused as soon as she mentioned the royal family, and you could see her making side-glances to the manor as she asked, "And are you interested in the royal family?"

"Oh of course!" The noblewoman declares, though freezes when the more serious looking guard makes a pointed cough, and she rather quickly adds with a nervous laugh, "W-within imperial law of course! But you are from one of the oldest lines in Hyrule; masters of the royal stables, Ladies in Waiting amongst countless Queens, Trainers of the peerless royal guard and legendary knights!" She looks to you with that last comment, before turning back to Malon, "A... bit of misspeaking about our great emperor would be excusable, yes?"

Malon eyes the noblewoman up and down with an intense stare, before letting out a sigh, "Do I look like I would have kind things to say about the empire? You can speak freely here."

Both the guards and maid noticeably wince at that, while the noblewoman just looks away awkwardly, no doubt having inquired about the state of the ranch and the sad state of affairs that had befallen it. You suspect Malon was far less tolerant of this person before she revealed she was eager to support the ranch. "Well, um... my father assists with the procurement of items that had value to the royal family to go into the duke's collection. All for their preservation of course! Between you and me, it is a crime how those relics are treated, passed around so lightly. Why I've even seen a headdress worn by Princess Zelda herself!" The noblewoman says eagerly, rapidly forgetting her momentary awkwardness.

Malon cocks an eyebrow, "How do you know it was worn by Ze- Her majesty?"

"Because I've seen her wear it," The noblewoman leans in, her tone reverent as every one of her servants sighs, "Oh it was when I was but a little girl, but I will never forget that sight. Why, she even laid eyes on me! Such a bright, beautiful shade of crimson! Oh, I could feel myself being blessed..."

...You strongly doubted Zelda even remembered whatever event she was referring too. Luckily it sounded like a time when you and Zelda were so young there was no way she'd recognize you if you were at whatever this event this was. Still, that proved she knew Zelda's unique eye colour. Meeting her would result in instant recognition and you weren't sure what would happen then.

"It was such a beautiful ceremony, the king walked up onto the balcony and addressed the gathered nobles," The noblewoman continues, lost in the memory, "Told us that the most holy Zelda will grace us all with her presence, ensuring that the grace of the gods will smile down upon us. Then she stepped out, oh to see such a thing again but that was more than a decade ago..."

"Her majesty... just stood and looked out at the crowd?" Malon asked, giving a side-glance to you of utter confusion.

"Yes, truly one of the greatest moments of my life. Sadly it was but for a moment, before the king had her return inside. My family was sadly not high enough in status to meet her directly, but that moment was worth a lifetime..." The noblewoman says dreamily.

You look to Malon who had glanced over to you and looking at her expression you could tell she was as disturbed as you were by what that was implying. Maybe the noblewoman was misremembering with how Zelda has been martyred in the years since but her own father, the King of Hyrule parading out Zelda in such a strange manner was... how do you not recall this? It also made the fact you and Zelda would only ever play with each other with no other children other than Impa present have... implications you really didn't want to think about. Then again, those implications didn't fit in with how the games you did play usually involved diving into muck to pull out some strange insect or amphibian. There was a piece of the puzzle missing here...

Remembering what you had come over here for you bring up the small bucket, thankfully only a little bit of clear, cold water sloshing around inside of it. Enough that you could drink deeply from it without pouring water all down your front. As the cool water poured down your throat to your immense relief you had a slight twinge of annoyance as a good amount was pouring down your chin onto your bare chest. That annoyance changed into relief as you felt how cool it was against your skin and very keenly aware of how hot and humid it was you get an idea. Lifting the bucket up you let the cool, refreshing water pour over your head, sighing in relief at its touch even as it undid your ponytail so your hair cascaded around your face. You whip your hair back and forth, much like how Sif does, to get the excess water out before with one hand pulling your bangs back as you looked back towards the group who had all gone oddly silent.
"Whew..." The less serious looking guard muttered aloud and for several uncomfortable moments that was the only thing anyone said.

Suddenly the noblewoman cleared her throat and gesturing to you with an oddly serious voice said, "P-perhaps," She paused as her voice cracked before she seemed to collect herself, "Perhaps it would be best if the sir knight would be properly introduced?"

Sensing no way out of it and the chance to maybe gather some info you made your way over as Malon was looking at you with eyes the size of saucers. She noticeably gulped as you got close before, after several deep breaths, Malon spoke, "Y-yes, Link this is Lady Linette Kovrirsk. She is here to purchase abs- I mean milk! Milk!"

"By the goddess, you could grind meat on-YES, yes. Milk," Lady Linette responded hastily, "It is a pleasure to meet you Sir Link, t-though what pray tell is a knight of your obvious calibre here for?"

How'd she- Right, master sword, "I'm untitled actually, and the last of my line," You correct her, and Lady Linette actually gives a small sympathetic gasp at that, "I'm more of a monster hunter, dealing with Moblins and such. As for why I'm here I had a debt to Malon's family and it seems arrived just in time to help her through a difficult state of affairs."

At the mention of Moblins the serious-looking guard let out a long impressed whistle and all of their gawking took on a look of awe. While Lady Linette and her entourage seemed to be good people under everything you could probably use this situation to get information your group desperately needed, especially with how talkative the noblewoman was.

There was also the thought that maybe you could use this chance encounter to bring in more allies, but you'd effectively have to kidnap them and hold them hostage even if they'd be fully willing, simply for their own protection from the monsters and assassins after your group. The effects from a noblewoman's disappearance would probably have far-reaching effects, especially once Lady Linette's father got wind. It could cost you allies and potentially access to this royal family collection in the long term unless your group moved fast. You would need a serious long term plan immediately.

That didn't preclude though allying with them in the future. Whatever land they owned could be a safe haven in a time of need, and it would be much easier to potentially evacuate them without tipping off the entire empire if they were safely in their own home through any Sheikah Gate that's close to their lands, or perhaps even access to one without risking anyone discovering your groups use of them.

Still, there were things you could ask them. What do you ask? Please choose more than one.

[] Where do you hail from?

"Oh, I am from East Necluda. My family's manor is right on the sea, the view is absolutely wonderful to behold," Lady Linette says, before giving you a look as she twirls a strand of hair with a finger, "Perhaps you could... come to visit someday and see it for yourself?"

"It might be some time," You say, looking over to Malon for a second. She's glancing between you and Lady Linette with an odd smile. Looking back to the noblewoman you figure to just speak the plain truth, "My companions and I have a job after we help Malon and given the nature of our work we'll be far from the coast. Thank you for the offer though."

Lady Linette looks disappointed for a moment, quietly saying, "The offer will stand Sir Link, I am sure a... knight-errant of your calibre could use a bit of rest," She pauses for a moment before perking up, "Perhaps we could accompany you? In my position a bit of..." She pauses, looking you up and down again, "Excitement is hard to come by~ Where perhaps will your work take you?"

"Faron," You say, there was no point in disguising it.

The instant you say that though both guards inhale sharply through their teeth, looking at you with shocked expressions. When Lady Linette turns to them with a quizzical expression both shake their heads rapidly. The noblewoman's shoulders sag noticeably, but when she turns back to you there is a good deal more admiration. You only notice then the more at ease guard suddenly looks to be considering something, before turning to you and suddenly asking "Hey, when you say companions you wouldn't happen to be travelling with a red female Zora, has this really nice trident and a sla-employment collar?"

You notice out of the corner of your eye Malon step back slightly as you slowly regard the guard, "Why are you asking?" You ask slowly, not making any threatening movements yet.

The guard notices the change in the atmosphere immediately and throws up her hands in a placating gesture, looking rather nervous by your change in demeanour, "Hey hey, don't mean to put any of you in danger or anything! Just words got around that a group of Sorceresses and a knight singlehandedly saved a village from an army of Moblins and Bokoblins! Only real detail was one of them was a Zora! So I just thought..." She stops, her hands lowering as her jaw does, "Oh goddesses, that was you!"

Figuring that there was no real ill will from the guard you nod, "Yes, we did save the village and from your reactions we might be going into similar danger."

The more at ease guard swallows nervously, looking as though she was standing in front of a childhood hero. The more professional guard and one seemingly with a better idea of what you accomplished was practically shaking in her boots and looking as though a legend had practically sprung off the pages. If you spoke to her you were almost certain she'd salute you. The maid looks to be stuck between disbelief and a genuine look of respect though you can tell from her unfamiliar reactions from the mention of "Moblins" and "Bokoblins" that she wasn't quite aware of what those monsters were capable of.

Lady Linette though practically had stars in her eyes.

[] Could you tell us more about your family?

"Of course! The Kovrirsk family has a long and illustrious history serving the crown," Lady Linette responded instantly to your inquiry, "While we are only of minor nobility, my family owns quite a sizable portion of the Necluda Sea beaches and has long allowed locals and those seeking relaxation to make use of them."

"What of now, you mentioned your father collects royal artefacts?"

"Well, the Duke we are sworn too managed to simply buy all our noble titles back-" Lady Linette pauses, eying you with a curious look, "Hmmm, are you aware of the details on how your family likely lost their titles Sir Link? You mentioned you were the last of your line, and it'd be most unfortunate if such details were kept from you."

You shake your head and Lady Linette gives you a sympathetic look as you say, "While I... saw the vast differences in what I had compared to what I have now I was never told why, what little I know I gathered while travelling."

Lady Linette nods, and launches into an explanation; "Well, after the empire annexed Hyrule our noble titles were revoked, intended to be handed over to whoever the empire appointed. However, we of the Hyrule nobility are far more individually wealthy than any common Imperial appointee. Now, I won't say I'm any military expert," She waves a hand dismissively at this, her two guards giving the look of people who ensured she was aware of it, "But quite simply rather than simply seizing our lands they let us own it, though with an absolutely horrific tax levied against us. Father made it quite clear we would have lived as paupers if we actually paid!"

She shakes her head, "Most of our fellow nobility capitulated and sold their lands to the government for a paltry sum, but the duke who is fabulously wealthy helped us pay for taxes and bought noble titles. Why, you'd think he had access to the entire royal treasury!" Lady Linette chuckles, with her maid politely joining in.

"Actually, that's how my family kept the land, back when I was allowed to sell our milk. We just bought the rights to our land back and the taxes ended up having to drop as they appointed their own people to run the territory. " Malon adds in, her tone turning bitter at the end.

Lady Linette looks to Malon for a moment with a look of horror and sympathy, before giving a nod, "We were lucky that we were allowed in the end to keep our wealth and buy back our titles, though without the influence we once enjoyed even as minor nobility in the new Imperial court. It does give us quite the few connections to allow relics of the royal family to end up in the hands of those that appreciate it. No one views us as a potential rival, though it does leave things without any excitement..." She lets out a long, wistful sigh as her gaze drifts to the horizon.

"No one tries to sabotage your family buying these relics? They surely must have people clamouring for them, don't they?"

Lady Linette lets out a chuckle, barely attempting to stifle it, "Oh, on the contrary! Most seem desperate to get them off their hands! It seems all who have purchased our kingdoms royal items have any idea of what their worth, you've seen the gaudy fake wealth that's popular with the nobility yes?"

You nod, remembering the armour you had looked at in Castle Town, but it still perplexes you, "Surely who they belonged too would make them worth something?" You ask her, trying not to think of how obsessed people must be to get their hands on your childhood friends dresses for some creepy shrine.

"Oh yes, but it's remarkable how quickly you can buy them for such paltry sums. It seems amongst those the empire has elevated even the crown jewels could be sold for a paltry sum," She pauses, rubbing her chin, "It's rather strange actually, I'm certain they've lost rupees on it, but my father handles all the finances," Lady Linette replies with another chuckle, "It's why the duke entrusts him with gathering these artefacts. He's the shrewdest negotiator in all of Hyrule!"

[] Anything special in this collection?

"Oh! Why none other than a Tiara belonging to the princess!" Lady Linette happily tells you, and you catch a glimpse of Malon glancing towards you and rolling her eyes at Lady Linette's happy proclamation.

It takes a great amount of willpower to do the same, though less from Lady Linette's bold proclamation not being remotely what you want but more because you've spent enough time with Zelda that not only would she probably not care in the slightest but she'd probably not recognize it and wear it on her wrist or something as it must be tiny.

"Is it all items belonging to her majesty?" You ask carefully, don't want to imply you're going to rob that Palace blind. Not that the others would support that, though you suspect if Zelda walked in you'd all have the pick of the litter.

Lady Linette shakes her head, "Oh no there's so much more. Dresses from the late Queen, weapons and armour from the royal guard-" She pauses for a second as both you and Malon do a double-take before she continues, "Art, treasures, I think they even have magical artefacts!"

You and Malon both look to each other and with a slight nod from you Malon turns and asks with a bit of faux surprise, "Magic?! Did you really see something like that?"

Lady Linette blushes, "Well no, I don't often get to see what my father procures, but I've heard mention! My father is quite thorough at procuring items! In fact, I think there's even a shield belonging to the Royal Family in the collection and that HAS to be magical!"

Well, that's a question for Zelda.

"If all this is true, why hasn't everyone tried to hoard it?" You ask, tapping the Master Sword's hilt, "I know exactly how powerful those items are, with monsters on the rise shouldn't there be people desperate to get their hands on such weapons?"

Lady Linette's expression changes, becoming a mask of worry and confusion, "I... I don't know Sir Link. As I said, my father doesn't involve me in the transactions," She pauses, her expression changing slightly as though just realizing something, "But... there is a new- how should I say this... Mindset? Everything is sold for short-term gain or to benefit some friend or another, I know as nobles there's the presumption we ruin lives for politics or rivalries but never could I have imagined so many so willing to ruin something solely at the whims of whoever they're trying to curry favour for..."

That... sounds important to ask about, but a less dire topic might be necessary for the moment...

[] Ask about the Manor? Palace.

"Oh, it is the most incredible place I've ever seen short of Hyrule castle!" Lady Linette exclaims, "I've never been inside of course, but it's like a castle out of a fairytale, even those few who maintain it have large manors!"

"Does the duke live there?" Malon asks, glancing towards her own manor home and trying to comprehend the scale of this palace.

"Oh no, he lives in a manor nearby, the Palace isn't ever occupied though it's cleaned regularly," Lady Linette explains, "I think only his son visits when they're not storing another artefact there."

"His son?"

Huh, you've never seen someone roll their eyes so hard as Lady Linette did just now as she makes a frustrated groan, with the rest of her servants pinching the bridges of their nose or also rolling their eyes, "Ugh, don't get me started. He's harmless, but he and his friends are the biggest group of idiots I've ever met. But at least they act like proper Hyrulean nobility, interacting with them doesn't make me feel like I have to scrub myself bloody."

[] What's the situation with the Imperial courts?

"I take it things at the Imperial courts are pretty bad?" You ask.

"Uuuuuuuuuuuuugh, it's the worst!" She exclaims, dropping any decorum as Lady Linette slumps, "Every bit of romance with our noble titles is gone and the courts are utterly worthless to attend. I spend more time at home then interacting with those of my social status."

"Not having to pretend to listen to others and play politics? Sounds pretty amazing to me," Malon mutters, which Lady Linette gives a sympathetic look too.

"Oh dear Malon, there so much you miss! Oh if only you could attend a true ball, feel the thrill of courtly intrigue," She sighs, "Or if we could go back to it, everything is run by some manner of governer now who has absolute power over their territory. Then they all kowtow to someone higher up who has absolute power over them, no ambition in anyone only sycophants who indulge in all manner of disgusting practices."

With a huff she makes a gesture towards where you know the spirit tracks are, "Did you know NONE of the nobility was told the spirit tracks were coming into being?"

That takes you aback, "What? But they're swarming with soldiers!"

She nods, "Soldiers who do not know their social status! They and whatever governor is in charge somehow found out before us, the nobility! These governors... they and the legions are together, abusing their authority and acting out however they please!"

"But... surely they answer to the Emperor and his followers?" You ask in utter disbelief, aware you were probably asking the worse person about this, "You can't just have a bunch of... Petty Warlords controlling their own little slice of territory and call that an empire."

"Oh Sir Link, I wish it wasn't so but that's exactly how it works. The only thing the greater military has is its legions of those..." She gives a shudder, "Disgusting golems. Without them I fear Hyrule and all nations in this empire would have descended into total anarchy."

"So the Emperor has no power?! What did the Nemesis who ran rampant through our country and destroyed our way of life take control?!" Malon shouts, a look of utter disbelief, not helped that as soon as Malon said "Nemesis" Lady Linette actually snickered.

When she sees both your's and Malon's expression at that she turns immediately apologetic, "Oh no, I'm so sorry. I didn't realize that it's so unknown outside noble circles! The Nemesis, the Imperial Prince he's... a fop!"

"...What?"

"He's a loser, a nobody. He runs around trying to appear like this great warrior but I don't think he's even been in a real battle! Everything is some silly myth the governors and legions try to push. He's nothing like you Sir Link!" Lady Linette says, getting a little closer to you, "You're the first real knight I've seen since I was a child."

"So the emperor and his son has no power and instead we have to deal with a bunch of warlords making their own laws," You state with a long sigh, no wonder the soldiers you've seen seem so cultish. No doubt whoever these monsters chasing you are and the Yiga clan are the ones actually running the Empire. You doubt the petty tyrants would resist entities with the ability to kill them at any moment, "I think this explains more than a few things I've seen... and the monsters."

[] What's the situation with the Gorman's from another noble's perspective?

"Bizarre and yet typical," Lady Linette says, "Oh I wish I could do something but these governors have near-total power as long as they pay their taxes and don't intrude onto another's territory. Your lands unique situation... it must be saving you."

"Great, other innocents are experiencing this as well..." Malon mutters bitterly before looking at you, a fire of rebellion and a deepening commitment to your cause apparent with only a glance.

"I must say though, I will be happy to be as far from their creepy antics as possible. I refuse to even be in the same building as them," Lady Linette says, with mutter agreement from her servants, "Their desperation to become part of the old nobility is almost as disgusting as how tyrannically they run their land, greedily devouring any wealth it has."

"Surprised no one has called them out," You say, taking note of the puzzled expression on Lady Linette's face.

"That is strange, no one around them seems to have any problems with them though anyone belonging to the old nobility chooses to stay far away from those brothers," She says, tapping a finger against her chin in thought, "Oh I can't wait to be out of here... I just wish I could take you all with me..."

[] Is there any aid you can offer to Malon's unfortunate situation?

"Isn't there anything you can do for her?" You ask, stepping forward slightly.

Lady Linette looks to her feet, cheeks turning red as she hurriedly says, "I... I don't..."

Suddenly she straightens up and with her chest puffed out she strides towards Malon and takes Malon's hands into her own, looking the farmgirl in the eyes, "Lady Malon, I swear I will bring your situation up with the Duke, who will undoubtedly come to your aid! Just hold out a little longer and I promise you and your sister will be dining with me in my manor, free from being slobbered on by that disgusting pair!"

Then she looks to you, "And I will tell him of the brave knight and his band of sorceress's who're doing to legions job and protecting us from the monsters plaguing our land. He will surely provide you aid if you were to show him your sword! Though, perhaps if you were with me when you approached him he might be even more receptive to your plight?" Lady Linette tells you, fluttering her eyelashes at you.

"Thank you, Lady Linette. I'm certain my companions will be most grateful to know we have someone looking out for us."

"Oh yeah, the summer palace? Huh... yeah we should check that out or something," Zelda dismissively says as she flips through document after document, only pausing to push a pair of glasses up her nose.

"I expected you to be more enthuiastic," You chide the Princess.

"I didn't spend time there since I was a child! I mean, yes it's historically interesting. It was actually the original Hyrule castle, who knows what secret tunnels are under it but anything special was probably brought in by this Duke," She tells you, turning her chair around with a loud scraping to regard you with her arms folded in front of her.

"What of Lady Linette and all she said?"

"I wish I got to meet her, but she would have instantly recognized me. None of what she said was good news though, everything I read through in these documents and what she said... I fear at any moment the Yiga and those monsters can kick off a great Calamity and we'd be powerless to stop it," She responds with a sigh, sliding down in her chair. Paya, who was hiding behind a stack of papers she was pretending to read looked up with a worried expression towards Zelda.

"She also mentioned something about a shield belonging to your family specifically, any idea what-"

That makes Zelda shoot up from her chair as she practically screams, "THEY HAVE THE HYLIAN SHIELD?!"

"Uuuh.."

She runs up, grabbing you by the shirt and starts shaking you, "IT HUNG OVER THE MANTLE IN MY FATHER'S QUARTERS! IT'S THE STRONGEST SHIELD I'VE SEEN RECORDED IN HISTORY! IT'S CARRIED THE LEGEND OF THE ANCIENT HERO! WE HAVE TO GET IT!"

"Zel-da-if-you'd-stop-shaking-me-" You manage to get out, and Zelda thankfully lets you go with an embarrassed blush, "Okay, but are you fine with going there? It contains a lot of... well things that sound like they'd be painful to see again."

Zelda just looks up to you with a small smile, "Link... Thank you, but I've gotten a good look at my own intestines during our adventures. I'll be fine, it took me awhile but... I'll manage and there's NO way I'd miss the chance to be the first to hold that shield."

"And the duke and Lady Linette?"

"Lady Linette... she sounds like she'd be a good friend to have, I don't know how I'd explain well... myself but I think we should take what we can get," She frowns, looking like she was chewing on the inside of her cheek, "This duke though... stockpiling all these artefacts... it can't just be patriotism and where did he get the Rupees for this?"

"Think you can guess which Duke it was, sounds like he kept his lands-" You begin, but Zelda only shakes her head.

"I... never learned about the noble family's..." She mumbles, brow furrowing, "Which is strange, I cared more about academics but I was the Princess..."

"We were both young when things started happening-"

She shakes her head, "I know Link, but... well, let's say that recently I've started to consider myself how I... was, as a Princess. And... I know nothing of statecraft or politics."

"Paya?" You ask, looking over to the Sheikah girl, who turns beet red at being addressed and lets out a loud squeak, "I know things were rough, but was there any lessons Zelda may have missed while living with you, a book or conversation?"

Paya shakes her head, looking to Zelda, "N-no, I-I h-helped with everything e-even on... t-the bad days."

Zelda smiles at her friend, before giving you a serious look, "Either way, we need to focus on the mission. We need to find Medli and the last Maiden. Learning what's up with this Duke and meeting with all these people Moebius listed might be a lesser priority for now. Hopefully, once we're all together maybe... things will be illuminated."

"And I suspect the paperwork is helping us get Malon out of her so we can get on that?"

"If it doesn't kill us through tedium, ugh back to reading through tax documents..."

[X] Inspect the structures being built outside the property.

With not much to do on the ranch currently you start making your way towards its border as the wind began to pick up and greenish-tinged clouds slowly rolled in, the border almost indistinguishable other than one stone marker anyone could mistake. Being mostly grazing land it was relatively flat, with only rolling hills and scattered copses of trees in the distance so you got a decent look at the structures even before you approached. Stone base with odd drains at ground level, with high wood frames filled with tiny interlinking sections of wood, you almost thought they were going to fill it in with the interlacing thin sticks and plaster common of many buildings here yet something seemed off. You weren't a carpenter though and your sole experience was helping put up a house for a handful of Rupees when you were 15.

You did notice a significant amount of crates lying about, though what they could be filled with you had no idea and would need to investigate yourself. Feet crunching against the dead grass you hear Sif happily walk up, joining you for a moment before taking his leave to sit under a now leafless tree, the connection to Irene's well-being made clear with every foot of dead, dry plant life that was only a few days ago a lush green.

Stepping over the almost imperceptible ditch that separated Malon's property from that of her neighbour you slowly jog up towards one of the buildings, taking note of its size. Longer then they were wide, you almost thought they were barracks but as you drew closer something didn't seem quite right. You peer over the stone walls, a rather potent smell hitting you as you take care to not step on any of the tools that were lying about. Work it seemed had moved to another building and you almost feel your heart stop when you hear voices begin to grow louder as two people approach. You duck down behind the wall, ignoring an odd smell reaching you as you listened to see if they started to make their way towards where you were. Being sneaky was an idea but you'd never considered it approaching. For starters, it was pointless, even though you could probably not be caught spending the rest of the day creeping about for what little information you could grab was a waste. Better to go in as if going for a walk and leave when confronted, but not before you get a look in those crates which means waiting a moment for what you realize are two guards walk away on their patrol.

It takes a little bit, the guards mumbling about the wind before their voices begin to recede. But after you were certain they were gone you emerge from your hiding space and finally getting a chance to look inside the building. To your surprise, it appeared they hadn't laid down any flooring. Which well, you don't know how houses are built but you assume proper flooring is done after all the construction is. That doesn't explain though why it appears they've dumped tons of fertilizer onto the ground. You sure weren't a farmer, but were they just building storage barns? Certainly, an excessive amount but maybe they were going into business for fertilizer?

With those thoughts in mind, you make your way between the crates whistling as you glanced at them trying to find one that was open. The workers were unlikely to realize an armed stranger was looking over their equipment at first glance as you'd opted to go out in the clothes you'd worked in, though as soon as people noticed you didn't doubt they'd be nervous. No one carried a sword this fine around in public without being dangerous, and that's before they saw the blades glow.

Thankfully, finding a crate that had been opened proved easy enough and with a quick glance around to see no one was watching you peered inside. Whatever it was you were expecting though nothing proved more confusing then what you saw, stacked carefully and insulated with straw within.

Glass. Plates and plates of glass.

You looked back to the buildings, noting their shapes and finally realizing what they were. Greenhouses, with the drains being some form of irrigation. Rows and rows of greenhouses with the glass to match. Goron's could make and shape glass cheaply but this much. It must cost a fortune! You knew very little about agriculture though you can't help but consider what kind of crop yield all those greenhouses would produce, sheltered from weather and most insects. It'd be an impressive work that'd bring endless prosperity to the community if the Gorman's weren't involved. As it was, you couldn't help but be worried about what the true motive was for all these greenhouses. Zelda would probably know, or at least have an idea what they were planning.

You begin to jog back, satisfied that you'd gotten everything of value-

"Oi! Stop right there!"

You turn, adopting a casual but surprised body language as you see a guard run up to you. He was wearing the uniform of all the militia you'd seen, a simple shirt of chain poking out from underneath it as he glared at you from under his helmet, "This is private property owned by the Gorman's, explain your... self..." The man trails off, his sneer turning into one of nervousness as he sees the master sword upon your back, the faintest glow coming from the tiny gap where the hilt met the scabbard, visible thanks to the rapidly darkening sky.

In fact, it felt oddly warm on your back...

"Oh my deepest apologies, I'm a new hire at the ranch and didn't realize where the property lines were," You say, carefully glancing back to the ranch. You see Sif trot up to a few metres away, teeth bared and snarling at the guard.

The guard to his credit notices immediately, and you laugh, "Oh that's my dog, let him get some exercise but he's really nervous around new people. Let him rest but he seems more active now."

"W-well..." He says, swallowing nervously, "I will have to inform my superiors! Improper marking of boundaries and trespassing are finable offences! Expect to see a response very soon!"

You nod, "I understand, I'll be there to receive it. Have a safe evening sir."

The man flinches, "S-safe? Is that a threat?!"

You raise your hands up in a placating gesture, stepping back towards Sif, "No no sir! It's just that well..."

"Looks like there'll be a storm tonight."

As soon as you were out of sight of the construction you practically sprint back to the Ranch, throwing open the door and nearly colliding with Malon, who was carrying a random assortment of clothes, books, pots and knickknacks. You reach out with one hand to steady her and the other to steady the pile of objects in her hands, practically sandwiching it between the two of yourselves as you draw her closer.

There's no embarrassment in her face though as she quickly states, "It's Tonight! Zelda's using that slate but there's so much-"

"I saw the clouds, here let me-" You say, awkwardly reaching around the farm girl to tap the bracelet on your wrist. The whole pile in Malon's suddenly glows blue and vanishes, making her jump back in surprise. "There, here take this. Just tap and point it at anything you have," You say, taking off the bracelet and handing it to her.

Malon gives you a quick nod before running off, flashes of light following the retreating mane of red hair that disappeared behind a corner.

Only for a blonde mane of hair to practically tackle you as Zelda yelled; "IT'S POLLEN!"

"Wha-?" You say, as two red eyes look up at you, a look of disgust, anger and realization on her face.

"It's right here!" Zelda shouts, waving a scrap of parchment in your face, "Survey of pollinating species, made to register why crop failures were happening. The people acting funny, Gorman's gaining so much control, it all starts with local pollinators dying off! They must have made a deal with some sort of... plant monster! That explains why you saw the Deku Baba and those thorns! Those monsters are probably all congregating thanks to those fools evil dealings!"

"But then why didn't anyone notice? Sure I guess pollen can arrive soon but where is this monster?"

"That I don't know," Zelda mutters, rubbing her chin in thought, "But now we know why Irene had all those symptoms, why she was targetted first. The pollen must have gotten into her system and affected her the strongest of all of us because of her abilities. Thankfully the rain is coming but we know nothing of what their plans are."

"I can maybe help with that," You say, causing the Princess to look back over to you, "Went for a walk just now, turns out the Gorman's are building massive greenhouses all throughout this area."

"Goddesses, there must be dozens of those..." Zelda mutters, "After we get Malon, Romani and Irene to safety we need to come back when things die down a bit to burn down all those greenhouses. Who knows how far whatever this is could spread with such optimal conditions."

"Can we even do that without them immediately knowing we arrived?" You ask, deflecting from the thoughts whirling in your head as Zelda nods.

"We haven't used it, but we are capable of travelling individually to locations we've registered. It won't activate the gate fully so we can be stealthy," She takes that moment to examine your clothes, "Well, I can be stealthy. I don't want to hurt anyone who's brainwashed."

"I don't suppose I can get a similar outfit to what you wear? Be nice to be able to help out in ways that aren't just hitting things," You half-joke, but from the sudden change in Zelda's expression she's considering. Though in the end she just lets out a long sigh.

"No... those outfits are for Sheikah only, and I don't know how you'd prove yourself. Even if you reveal you're well..." She grimaces slightly, as if the thought of you telling her people you're a god was too horrible a thought to bear, "We Sheikah... it would have to take something more then mere friendship and loyalty for us to defy our traditions."

"Then I won't ask you to do it," You say, but you pause when you can see a... conflict in Zelda's expression that quickly disappears as she glances out the window, "Let's make sure Malon can get out of here."

Zelda nods. Face set into an expression of determination as she raises her slate; "Right. Nothing else matters right now."

As Zelda runs off with her slate (Malon having yours) you feel a presence appear beside you, her back pressed up against yours, "How long until you leave us to face it alone?"

"We need to get moving, I can wait till the last minute," You tell Midna, not turning around to face her.

"How do you think they'll react? She said it herself that she does not want any human harmed, do you wish to prevent them from becoming a liability as you fight these Gorman's retaliation?" She asks you.

You shake your head, "No, I just know the last few weeks have been rough. Even on you," Midna stiffens at that, "Better that I face this alone then leave you all with more nightmares."

The pressure vanishes from your back as Midna pushes off you, "Tch, that annoying self-sacrificing. I don't know if that's because you're a god or a hero but you better not become a martyr!"

"Heh, I won't Midna," You say with a small laugh as you see Paya run down the stairs to you, her pure white hair slightly frazzled, "M-master Link! We-we're getting everything ready! I-is there anything we should be doing?"

Hmmm, what should you gather to prep for tonight? You only really have time for one unless you can come up with a detailed plan.
[] Haybales to create a burning blockade.
[] Convince Mipha to create pitfalls.
[] Gather up potentially weaponizable farm-equipment.

GM NOTE: The reasons this is late has absolutely nothing to do with Iceborne coming out. At all. No way.

[X]Plan Hyrulean Resources
-[X]Zelda and Malon concentrate on gathering everything from the farm that Malon wants to bring. Mipha gives Midna her bracelet so she can help.
-[X]Paya concentrates on prepping Romani and Irene ready for transportation.
-[X]Ask Mipha to create pitfalls.
-[X]Link and Proxi move hay bales to create a burnable blockade. Link moves things with his super-hylian strength while Proxi helps scout locations.

You nod at Paya, "Irene and Romani need to be prepped to leave, do you think you could make a temporary stretcher for them so we can load them onto the cart?"

Paya nods, "Y-yes. I-I'll get right on it!"

"Be sure to ask Mipha to hand her bracelet over to Midna to help with packing, need her help outside."

She looks at you, worry and fear on her face "A-are we going to be attacked?" She asks, voice trembling with more than her usual nervousness.

"Hopefully not, but we can put something up that's a deterrent for any patrols that come investigating," You try to reassure her, but you can see the worry still plain in her expression. She turned away, disappearing up the stairs with a wave of white hair. You waited a moment, then followed after her up the stairs before turning to your room. Closing your door behind you and taking a deep breath you set the master sword down, and look towards the armour and green tunic you had set to the side.

It wasn't long until you had all your gear on, shield and sword hanging from your back as you don your cap. You spend a moment to carefully gather the rest of your things, leaving them for the others to use the bracelet on. Heading out of the room and back down the stairs you pass your frantic friends and step out the door, where Mipha was patiently waiting, the red-scaled Zora fidgeting anxiously with her trident before she noticed you and immediately stood up straight.

"Link? You wanted me for something?" She asks, looking concerned. You don't doubt she suspected something might be up. But... you couldn't ask her to stay with you. To force her to potentially kill again, to hurt people who might be just doing their jobs. The other's needed her so much more.

You nod, "Yeah, want to stop anyone from investigating so I thought about putting up some barriers and pitfalls. Could you help with that?"

"Of course, but..." She pauses, worry clear in her catlike eyes, "Are you worried about what might come for us?

"I'm worried someone will see us and try to get a closer look. Better they get deterred or stuck for a bit before they run off and get reinforcements. Even if we can delay them a few moments it might just be enough to let us escape," You tell her, not a full lie. You genuinely hoped it would delay.

But some part of you knew better.

Mipha just simply nods, glancing over to the gate of the Ranch with clear apprehension, her already slit pupils narrowing even more as she bites her lip with her shark-like teeth, her expression though different from Hylian features clearly one of apprehension, "I'll do it. It's... It's better if they have a few sprains and cuts then us needing to act."

You can't meet her eyes.

You watch her for a moment as Mipha hurries over to the entrance, her aquatically suited body making her gait notably different from a human's even if she still moved with surprising grace across the dirt, her fins flexing with the anxiety you could see in every fibre of her being as the gravity of the situation had fully settled over you all. You watch as she holds aloft her trident as water begins to pull itself from the air, swirling around the trident like shimmering ribbons. Then the air shrieks as a jet of water shot out at impossible to follow speeds, the ground in front of Mipha detonating, heaving as though a giant Hinox had reached down and scooped out a chunk of earth and sent it flying, scattering out toward the road. Then the ground shook before geysers of mud erupted all around the hole she had dug, spraying everything around her in dirt as deep pits formed a latticework of pitfalls. As the last piece of mud hit the ground she twirled her trident around before slamming the blunt end into the ground. Water suddenly swirled around her, scouring every last speck of dirt from her form. It was an awesome display of magical might, you couldn't help but wonder how many would actually stick around to fight someone capable of those feats. She looks over to you, shimmering from the water droplets clinging to her scarlet scales and you give her a shouted thank you and thumbs up before turning towards the barn, just catching sight of Mipha noticing the others struggling to hitch up the horses and running over to assist.

Stepping in you take note of the bales of hay, you'd bought a lot of feed for the animals, most of it would likely be picked up by the others using the Sheikah Slate but now you had to find which were the most flammable. If only a certain fairy was around to-

"Link?"

You turn around to see the small glowing light and gently fluttering wings of the fairy Proxi bobbing up and down in the doorway of the barn.

You open your mouth to say something to her, greet her but the fairy immediately cuts you off with a concerned voice "You're planning to fight people, aren't you?"

"Yes," You tell her after a long sigh, "Even if they don't know our plan with Irene falling ill and the massive area of dead plants that caused I know... whatever is behind the scenes here will want the Gorman's to respond or watch the place, and they will see the gate activate. I don't expect an army... but I do expect a fight."

"And... you don't want the others to hurt people..." Proxi quietly responds, her wings drooping slightly.

You just nod.

"B-but you'll be fighting a bunch of people by yourself!" The fairy suddenly shouts, zipping over to your face and bobbing up and down rapidly. You can just make out in the light the tiny figure of a girl frantically waving her arms, "I-if monsters show up or something worse who will make sure you don't get hurt!?"

"I'll be fine," You tell her, "As long as we can get everyone away I can deal with whatever comes after me."

"No! No no no!" She shouts, and you feel tiny fists beating at your nose as the light gets so bright you have to close your eyes, "I'm sticking by you so you don't get hurt! That's what us fairies do! So you better just accept the help buster!"

"Okay! Okay!" You shout, recoiling a bit, "Ooooooooow my eyes!"

The blinding light dissipates, and the small sphere shifts into more of a tiny glowing person, "Oh um... Sorry," The fairy mumbles, trailing off slightly before quickly darting around the barn, "Sooo why are you in here again?"

"I'm looking for the most flammable haystacks. Something to create a burning barricade or a distracting blaze with," You tell her as you rub your eyes, you'll be seeing spots all day after this.

"Oh! I can help with that!" Proxi shouts, zipping around the barn, pausing occasionally above a bale of hay muttering to herself. After a few minutes, she suddenly zips back towards you stopping in midair in front of your face, "I found the most flammable bales of hay Link!"

"Oh uh... excellent!" You say, honestly surprised at how quickly she figured it out, "Could you point out which ones and then I'll move them?"

You swear you see the fairy give you a salute and then she zips off again, hovering over a bale of hay and actually changing colours, flashing noticeably and sprinkling a cloud of glowing dust on it that seemed to highlight the bale of hay in a way that instantly drew the eyes. It was remarkable how easy it made to spot things. In fact... could it help in combat, let you casually lock onto enemies so you never miss? No that'd be ridiculous... or is it?

You weren't given long to ponder it though, work needed to be done. Walking over to the bale of hay you lifted it onto your shoulder, only pausing a moment to notice you barely felt the weight before you carried it out of the barn. Then Proxi highlighted another bale, and another and another as the two of you set to work, a significant pile building outside the barn.

Then came setting them up, Proxi again proving invaluable as she helped you set up the bales of hay, each one placed far enough apart that they're not the most effective barricade but close enough together that with a single swing of your boomerang a wave of fire would engulf whoever ran at you. Of course, at worst it would result in some burns and singed clothes but it'd keep whoever tried to break past you away.

Setting down a simple brazier filled with a few dry pieces of wood, old cloth and torches you find with Proxi's help you begin to feel droplets hit you, only a few at first but quickly building towards a torrent as the sky rapidly begins to darken above you and a rumble could be heard in the distance.

++++
You retrieve your bracelet and spend the rest of the day assisting the others in preparing to move everything from the portal as the rain pours down on all of you, none of them making a single comment to the defences you had erected. It was incredible just how quickly the house had been rendered completely barren of any trace it had been occupied as you all set to work, and soon you were all outside trying to force a bunch of uncooperative animals to the still unactivated gate sitting in the middle of a muddy field, cloaks all drawn up tight to you. Malon, now sporting a hooded poncho over her mud-splattered clothing, seemed to take charge as she shouted over the crashing thunder and deafening rain to direct you all. Still more than once she slipped and you had to pull her up, the girl's red hair matted to her head with mud as she pulled her hood back up and went back to directing.

If she felt anything for abandoning her home she didn't show it. In fact, you weren't sure she cared for it at all now, if you asked she'd probably burn it to the ground. All for the promise of saving her sister who was being loaded up onto the wagon next to the feverish Irene, Paya dabbing her forehead with a cool cloth as she sat next to her. The wagon was under an awning that thankfully kept them out of the rain, though Zelda was assisting in getting a cover overtop to keep the rain off them.

Of course, trying to push some uncooperative cattle with the constant crashing of thunder even with a helpful Sif barking at them proved to be a dangerous business and more than once one of you was sent to the ground, clutching bruised or cracked ribs. Mipha though was immediately there to heal whoever was injured, the rain seeming to swirl around her and glow as it raced to wherever the injury was and removing any trace of it on their flesh. Then she was off, the only one of your group not shivering as the rain pelted her.

Soon though the only light was the flashing of lightning, some even getting dangerously close and nearly deafening you all as a powerful blast sent an explosion of dirt and stone into the air from a nearby field until it was swallowed again by darkness. Lanterns were lit, shaking ominously in the wind as the lights inside seemed to flicker.

The hour to activate the portal had arrived. Shouts, barely heard over the wind, came from your friends as you could see Zelda trying to pull out her slate. Every eye moving towards the gate as the Princess stepped up to up, tangled up in her cloak that was so drenched it seemed to weigh her down.

"I'm going to do a quick run around, make sure we didn't leave anything!" You shout as you slip away. You aren't sure any of them heard.

"Link, are you sure someone will come to investigate in this weather?!" You hear Proxi shout into your ear, your hat pulled down low enough on your head she only needed to pop her head out to reach your ear.

You don't say anything, heading to the braiser you had set up. Thankfully it was the type that could be covered and with your back to the wind you set to work lighting it. To your relief, it manages to light and you quickly light a torch, the flame low in the wind. Practically cradling it you quickly run to the hale bales and practically ram it in. For a moment it steams, then it glows and then flames begin to form even in the wind. You step back, enjoying the temporary feeling of heat.

Then the whole field is illuminated in blue light.

You turn, seeing the Shiekah gate burst into light as a wall of light forms in its arch. It was bright enough to leave an afterimage, but not so bright as to blind you and you quickly reignite your torch and begin to make your way to the other hay bales. Soon each was alight, a dull orange glow and a welcome heat to contrast the light illuminating the cattle beginning to be herded through. You imagine Irene and Romani were already through, out of the wind and rain. Things actually seemed to be progressing at a steady clip. You might even be able to make a hasty retreat after temporarily impeding what you knew was coming. The flicker of dozens of lantern lights in the distance told you.

There were only a few horses, most choosing to sit in covered lanterns. All bore the armour that marked them as servants of the Gorman's. They were all armed, spears and swords most prominent among them. You could even see those golems, marching in lockstep behind them heedless of the rain, glowing eyes visible in the darkness. The men looked miserable, angry that they had been called out though none seemed to direct their rage towards those who had brought them out, instead fixating on you.

There had to be over fifty men and golems, maybe even a hundred. They didn't charge, instead stopping in front of the gates. They seemed to know you had prepared traps. They did point their spears and swords at you. You wondered for a moment how you looked, cloak hanging from your frame as your hat flopped in the wind. Whatever menace you had from being highlighted by the burning hay bales was thoroughly quashed by the weather.

There was a shifting in the crowd, men parting as a carriage pulled up. Golems formed around it, not men and you watched as the doors were flung open. One golem got on its hands and knees, becoming a footstool for the two figures that emerged.

They were dressed finely, if bright blue and orange could be considered in fashion. Their ruffled collars were beaten down by the rain, as their vests strained to contain their potbellies. Each slipped in the mud, their shoes not made for this weather as the hose they wore even in the darkness gave you too much of a look at how they looked below the waist. The two Hylian men glared at you under bushy eyebrows, their large moustaches twitching as they slowly began to drop from the water. One snapped a finger and two men slowly ran up, unfurling umbrella's to shelter them from the rain as another shined a lantern in your face.

"And just WHO is this boy?" One of the Gorman brother's asks looking towards the soldiers around him.

"Sire! We believe he's the one male individual spotted at the ranch!" A soldier quickly responds.

"What does it matter brother? Look! She's trying to escape with the cattle through that portal just as it said!" The other Gorman responds.

"Ooooh that little harlot, I knew we shouldn't have waited! Forget the laws, dispose of the boy and bring us the woman! All of them!" The first Gorman shouts to his men.

"NONE OF YOU SHALL PASS!" You suddenly roar, and with one swift movement you draw the master sword. If the portal was bright the sword was blinding. Blue light poured from it, dancing along its edge like flames as the air seemed to hum around it. Even the light of the burning haybales seemed to disappear as the entire scene was bathed in this light. Men and inexplicably Golem recoiled, backing up as you glared at them, the rain and wind no longer seemed to bother you as strength flooded your limbs.

Before any of them can even react to what was happening you almost lazily swing the blade. There was a rush of air, a flash and a wave of energy suddenly erupted from the master sword. It shot past the Gorman's and struck their carriage. Like a bomb the wave of energy detonated as it hit with another flash of blue light, shattering the carriage as broken wheels and bits of wood tumbled into the golems and soldiers and sending the horses off running in a panic.

"Leave now, return to your homes! But mark my words ANY who try to approach will fall!" You shout again, standing resolute.

Men started to back away nervously, you began to notice crossbows being lowered now that there was enough light to see. The Gorman's, however, looked absolutely furious.

"He has a magic sword! How dare such a thing not be confiscated! Oh you thought you were clever boy!" One of the Gorman's spits out.

"He must think he's better than us! The Gorman brothers! Oh we know boy about the women with you! Beauties all, woo'd by that blade no doubt! Oh, they'll have quite a debt to work off as servants!" The other sneers at you.

"Yes yes! Soldiers, capture the boy alive! He dares claims things that should be ours! Oh you'll live to regret that boy, thinking you're some type of-"

"Hero..."

The voice that cut through the air made all of you freeze. The Gorman's looked around shocked, and you couldn't help but take your eyes off them to look around for the voice that had reached all your ears. For nothing human could have a voice like that. The voice of men, woman, children all speaking in unison as something dark and alien lay underneath it all. Yet it didn't seem like multiple people were speaking, no it was one voice that combined it all into an assault on the senses.

"I smell him..." The voice says again,"I smell the hero. His flesh..." A deep sucking sound followed, one unable to be made with a human mouth,"His bright soul..."

"M-my lord, w-what's happening?" One of the Gorman's shouts looking around frantically in terror, "T-the hero?! W-what do you-"

"Too bright..."

The shaking in the ground suddenly became so bad you could scarcely stand. The others weren't so lucky as a chasm suddenly ripped open in the road. Your sword, glowing ever brighter gave you a first hand look as men fell into darkness with a splash as vines topped with fanged mouths shot out of the ground. You could hear splashes, screams as steam that burned your eyes and nostrils shot out from this chasm. The Gorman's ran forward tripping into one of the pits Mipha had dug with a scream. Other men caught in the steam who didn't fall into darkness clutched at their faces as their bodies seemed to swell, boils forming across their skin as their eyes and mouth began to spew blood.

"Must... Kill the hero..." The voice snarled as more fanged vines seemed to shoot out from the ground and chasm. No not vines, massive Deku Baba's that grabbed men, biting them in half, ripping them to shreds even through armour or spewing out poison clouds that made them collapse choking as they vomited up their organs. "Devour him... Mustn't become stronger... We must surpass him..." Screams too close to you fill your ears as you look down into the pit the Gorman's had fallen into, nearly vomiting in the process as you witnessed their flesh began to slough off their bodies, caustic liquid pouring into the pits Mipha had dug, acid that painfully began to turn the Gorman's into a meat slurry. A shape began to rise from the chasm in the road. Larger than anything you've ever seen. More Deku Baba heads followed it, snarling and grinning at you with malicious intent. "Kill... Kill! KILL!"

Finally, you saw the creature that had taken over this town. It was a Deku Baba, its stalk armoured and swollen with blight and malice, purple veins pulsing under its sickly green skin as its bulbous head swayed back and forth. But no Deku Baba was this large, its fanged drooling head was large enough to easily swallow you whole. Wherever its drool hit the ground it sizzled and let forth a sickening smell that made you want to wretch. Like a snake, its head swayed back and forth as it seemed to regard you for a second. Then it opened its jaw wide and roared, your eardrums pulsing painfully from the sound you saw that instead of a tongue was a long flexible eyestalk with a fiery eye nearly the size of you perched on the end. Its slit pupil contracting as you realized with mounting dread and horror the malevolent intelligence clear in the eye as it locked onto you. Hatred unlike anything you had ever felt before seemed to radiate off it, and the creature lunged at you, teeth the size of sword blades ready to rend you apart-

Then a fist made of pure shadow slammed into its chin, sending the head reeling back.

"RUN OFF AND THINK NO ONE NOTICED HUH?!" A voice shouts at you as Midna stepped forward into view, clutching one of her spears in hand as more shadowy hands reached past you to swipe at the creature, "I bet you thought you'd fight an army by yourself, didn't you Link?!"

"Well, I'm really glad you've come to save me!" You shout back, taking a moment to step back out of the reach for the creature to devour you whole.

"Yes, save you!" Midna responds, hastily floating after you, "I'm not letting some overgrown weed devour MY mutt!"

The creature shook its head, roaring loudly again. It seemed hesitant for a moment as you approached the burning hay bales but you could see its Deku Baba children beginning to snake forward. It was also clear Midna's confidence was rapidly draining as she shakily looked towards you, "I-I do hope you've got a plan though, can't expect me to do all the work!"

[] Use the Gale Boomerang to send flames from the Haybales at it while Midna focuses on its children.
[] Have the Gale Boomerang slice up its children while Midna tears into the main body!
[] Bait it into attacking with the Gale Boomerang and then have Midna try to pin it down so you can hit it with the Master Sword.
[] Use the Master Sword against its children and have Midna cover you.
[] Write-in.

GM NOTE: I intended this to be out much sooner, but things kept popping up and taking up a ton of time. Rushed towards the end just to get this out, I hope that the effect was still good as I really half-assed it at the end but you guys needed an update. I'll go over this again if it needs to and do some edits. Hopefully, less things will pop out of the blue so I can work on the quest.
