Monster (A Star Wars Imperial Navy Defector Quest)

If we were to stay in Chandrilla, is there a chance we'd end up going down and whacking the general on the head for being an order-defying pain in our necks? (and, you know, killing civilians.)

Advantageous Consequences and Deleterious Consequences: A Tutorial

As promised, this quest is very mechanics light.

To that end, during conflicts between Vaere and others you will get a list of outcomes, both positive and negative to chose from. For each successful outcome that you pick, you MUST also pick a corresponding negative consequence.

You may pick multiple positive outcomes, provided you pick an equal (or greater, I guess) number of negative outcomes.

Due to the mild complexity of this process, having multiple parts, I would prefer that these votes be
By Plan.

In some cases you will be
FORCED to take a positive or negative consequence due to previous decisions, and you will need to pick options to balance that out.

At other times, due to circumstances, you may be granted the chance to take extra positive outcomes, or be forced to take more negative outcomes than positive ones.

To take the example of this chapter, you start with the Advantageous Consequences [x] Regain Command of missing Naval Squadrons already selected and must then select at least One (1) Deleterious Consequences in order to balance that out. You may then pick further Advantageous Consequences provided that you pick equal numbers of Deleterious Consequences to match them.

Report:
Admiral Vaere has deployed the bulk of the 1st Bormea Sector Supremacy Fleet to Corulag in order to intimidate Corulag's governor into releasing the units commanded by Rear Admiral Kraask back into her command.

Officially Admiral Vaere is in the Corulag system to show the flag and let any prospective rebels know that the Navy is still on guard despite the Emperor's death.

The visit is successful in shaking the remaining units of Vaere's command loose and she now plans to regroup in Chandrila where her logistical elements remain along with her most loyal subordinate flag officer. However, there have been other consequences of her visit, some of which she may not even be aware of...

Advantageous Consequences:

[X] Regain command of missing Naval Squadrons.

Admiral Vaere's personal presence, (And that of half a Supremacy fleet) has... Assured Planetary Governor Snopps that he is under no threat from any rebel elements, so there is no more need to waylay elements of the Imperial Navy that are required for missions elsewhere.

[ ] Make an ally out of Governor Snopps

Governor Snopps may only officially be the governor of the Bormea sector capital, but for years he has been Sector Governor Caglio's (Who spent much of his time on Coruscant, part of the Emperor's court) right hand man and has a great deal of de facto influence across the sector.

His attempt to take possession of Kraask's command makes sense in light of him not having powerful military elements to support his regime. And he is perfectly willing to make deals to ensure that he has military support.

As part of the discussions between the two, Governor Snopps and Admiral Vaere have pledged to support each other in the uncertain atmosphere that pervades the Empire post-Endor.

[Mutually Exclusive with 'Make an enemy out of Governor Snopps']

[ ] Someone in Coruscant's upper levels takes an approving interest in Vaere's decisive actions.

Vaere does not yet know this, but her taking decisive actions to maintain the military chain of command and prevent Imperial fragmentation has been noticed by someone on Coruscant who is willing to provide a level of political cover and support… And may have their own ideas for how Vaere will repay them for it.

Vaere does not know this!

[ ] A number of squadrons of Bormea Sector's Support Fleet in Corulag have joined Vaere.

Rear Admiral Kraask was not the only Imperial Navy force waylaid by the good governor Snopps.

A number of elements of the Bormea Sector Support Fleet passing through the system were waylaid when news of the Emperor's death broke. Until it is safe for these units to link up with the rest of their fleet, Admiral Vaere has used her rank to order them to support her Fleet for the duration of the crisis.

OOB: Add 1x Fleet Ordinance Force

Deleterious Consequences:

[ ] Make an Enemy out of Governor Snopps

Governor Snopps may only officially be the governor of the Bormea sector capital, but for years he has been Sector Governor Caglio's (Who spent much of his time on Coruscant, part of the Emperor's court) right hand man and has a great deal of de facto influence across the sector.

Far more than creating an antagonistic relationship with Governor Snopps, Vaere's high handed approach has turned Snopps into an enemy who will seek to undermine her at every turn. Vaere fears that Snopps enmity may come back to haunt her at some point in the future.

[Mutually Exclusive with 'Make an ally out of Governor Snopps']

[ ] Someone in Coruscant's upper levels takes a disapproving interest in Vaere's decisive actions.

Vaere does not yet know this, but her taking decisive actions to maintain the integrity of her personal command has been noticed by someone on Coruscant who has the power to move against her, but is for now limiting themselves to throwing friction into her efforts.

Vaere does not know this!

[ ] Agent Narr Becomes suspicious of Admiral Vaere's loyalties

Admiral Vaere moving to consolidate her fleet and even go so far as to question civilian authority is surely a mark against her in Narr's book.

He's not going to openly move against her now, and may never actually do so, but as things stands he's going to be seeing the Admiral's future actions in a negative light and is now preparing to open investigations into the loyalty of her and her subordinates.

Vaere does not know this!

[ ] Rear Admiral Kraask is Disloyal to Admiral Vaere

For whatever reasons sinister or innocent, the Rear Admiral was entirely happy to be taking orders from Governor Snopps and remaining in Corulag.

His Admiral Hunting him down and berating him and his patron into forcing his obedience sits wrong with him, and he will be looking for opportunities to undermine Admiral Vaere.

Vaere does not know this!

[X] Plan Loyal to whom?
-[X] Regain command of missing Naval Squadrons.
-[X] Agent Narr Becomes suspicious of Admiral Vaere's loyalties

I'll keep it simple, anyone still loyal to the corpse of the Empire will ultimatly be an enemy anyway, no matter wether we join the New Republic or become a local warlord.
And some internal affairs guy without a particularly captivating personality or penchant for blackmail will hardly find enough support among our soldiers to stop us from removing him from consideration if we have to.

I do want to hasten to add that you wont always be picking Deleterious Consequences for every single action, just that it will be required in some instances, and in others will be a way to get more ACs.

(Did I pick these to make AC/DC jokes? Maybe, maybe)

goal is kinda in the plan name. having an ally who can ensure we can keep our ships supplied in the coming havoc is very, very useful. and if we have to use our ships for their intended purpose instead of sitting on Chandrilla for who knows how long, so be it.

Narr seems like the safest disadvantage to take, and the enemy on Coruscant is far away will probably have a lot of issues to deal with shortly, whereas having one of our Rear Admirals be disloyal is crippling.

More boats less imperial friends

[X] Plan: disregard empire, acquire bote

The Empire is now a slowly rotting corpse. I have very little interest in what some politician in Coruscant thinks of our actions, because quite frankly I don't think we'll be working for the Empire much longer. We're either about to go full warlord or(the much wiser option) offer to defect to the Rebels/New Republic. In either case, peeling off assets from the local squadron garrison will be a big boon to our forces.

Consequences, A Tutorial
That sounds like every Imperial Officer's panicked nightmare as the whole corrupt edifice lights itself on fire around them. ;)

[X] Plan Coruscant's Notice

What makes you so sure the person in Coruscant's upper levels taking notice is Imperial? In my plan, it's probably two different people, for instance.

In the event you pick both Imperial Centre options, they will be different people, yes.

Coruscant, or "Imperial Centre" or w/e the empire called it? By the time of post-Endor most powerful people still in Coruscant are almost certainly imperials.
Most, but not all. And there's also the possiblitty of one taking notice beign a rebel infiltrator posing as someone from the service industry or something.

The aim of the quest is defect from the Empire, preferably in a manner that leads to redemption. In this case, why bother gaining favour from the Empire.
Besides, if the NR goes the 'canon' route, we can always just leave and go be a warlord.

[X] Plan: disregard empire, acquire bote

Hope we loot more of the Empire in the coming weeks, all in the name of the New Republic.

More ship is good, in many contexts, but also the larger our fleet, the relatively smaller the personally 'Loyal' elements will be.
Might come back to bite us when (if?) we get to the the 'hand the fleet over to the New Republic' part, and other commanders- not as loyal- have different ideas.

[X] Plan Building a Local Base of Power

Having an allied governor could pay dividends when we defect to the NR. Getting a fleet is good from their POV, but getting a fleet and a sector is bloody amazing. Well worth overlooking some atrocities for.

[X] Plan: Confusing Loyalties
- [X] Regain command of missing Naval Squadrons.
- [X] Make an ally out of Governor Snopps
- [X] Someone in Coruscant's upper levels takes a disapproving interest in Vaere's decisive actions.
- [X] Rear Admiral Kraask is Disloyal to Admiral Vaere

I wanna make the one we rescued an antagonist and the one we're strongarming an ally.

[X] Plan Building a Local Base of Power
[X] Plan: Confusing Loyalties

Joining New Republic with a fleet and a sector is better than doing so with just a fleet, so...

[X] Plan: disregard empire, acquire bote

Both of the DCs seem advantageous to forcing a defection TBH.

Until it is safe for these units to link up with the rest of their fleet, Admiral Vaere has used her rank to order them to support her Fleet for the duration of the crisis.
To clarify, does this mean they're only temporarily added to the fleet?
