Monster (A Star Wars Imperial Navy Defector Quest)

A smart decision would actually to turn around from "Preparing the way for Chadrillas destruction" to protecting the place. Keeping the planet from being dusted from vengeful Imperial asshole and then promptly hading both the world and the fleet to the NR would surely induce some gratitude which can keep our good Admiral out of a prison cell

Nah.
She is an admiral with a fleet, and has a General with a large taskforce close by.

Just reestablishing control over Chandrila is peanuts. Now, if she secures a sizeable chunk of hyperlanes and multiple worlds along the way...

Hey, here's an important question: how much of the Empire's racist "humanity first" propaganda did Shara buy into? Will that be up to us to decide?

When you get there, though I'll likely ask the question indirectly rather than just have a racism dial that you turn >: V

12 Hours after the Battle of Endor
Chandrila System, Bormea Sector

"Good to see you again, Bo- Ma'am" says Vice Admiral Nala Seles, throwing out the sort of sloppy salute that could only come from an elite member of the TIE corps as she half-jogs down the ramp of a Lamba 4a shuttle that Vaere is certain the small woman piloted over from Invictus herself.

She's a much smaller woman than Vaere, a slight tiny thing that looked as delicate as a light sculpture, her bright red hair cropped close like she planned to don a TIE pilot's helmet at any moment.

Vaere returns her salute and can see in the woman's silver eyes that she's much more worried that she's prepared to let on.

"We need to talk," Vaere waves for her subordinate to follow her, Nala's lack of complaint about the dismissal of the usual pleasantries telling Vaere the rest of what she needed to know about how out of sorts the other woman was, "General Thiromer's rejecting my orders. Same with Rear Admiral Kraask."

"Asshole." Seles snaps, causing a passing Lieutenant to start in near terror, "No. Not you. Lieutenant."

Vaere raises her left hand to dismiss the Lieutenant, as the two officers sweep towards the hangar's turbolift lobby, "Thiromer tells me that he received his orders directly from the Emperor and he's going to follow them until an equally legitimate authority countermands them."

"The Emperor is dead! You're his fucking superior!"

"Exactly. The problem is that his people just killed three thousand Chandrilans."

Seles puts her face over her palm and sighs, "Oh, shit."

"No one ordered him to," continues Vaere as a turbolift arrives, and the two officers step in, "I didn't give the order, Governor Weizel didn't give the order. Governor Weizel is in shock. The General just started shooting people that came out into the streets to celebrate the Emperor's death."

"That sounds like him."

"So, he isn't taking orders from me or anyone else." Vaere crosses an arm across her chest, and gestures loosely with the other, elbow inwards, "Which isn't my only problem. I have my personal Battle Squadron, I have you,-"

"The rest of my force should be here tomorrow, we threw a big net around this system ma'am."

"As ordered. But, right, but er, uh, the FTS and Support people are here, all the logistics and auxiliary ships are here, I've got 2nd battle squadron, and the first escort force, but Rear Admiral Kraask is sitting in Corulag because Governor Snopps is holding him there."

"Fucking Snopps?!"

"A Planetary Governor has no right to hold my ships. Not even if he's the Sector Governor's favorite lap dog."

"If it was Caglio, fine, (She would not be fine) the Sector Governor has the authority to requisition Naval resources. That caf soaked rag wrapped in leather? He has no authority. And now I'm missing four squadrons, almost a hundred craft."

Seles leans forward and smirks, "I could go get him for you. I'd love to make Snopps shit his pants."

"I'm not going to let you barge into the sector capital guns blazing at the very moment the Empire needs us to keep cool heads. He will get his tho." Vaere shakes a finger at her subordinate, "I'm not going to forget this."

"Again, I would love to be the one to make him get his. So, what are you going to do with an understrength Superiority Fleet?"

"Well, Nala, what we're going to do is-"

[ ] "-I'm going to Corulag to get my ships back.

"I'll leave you here with your battle squadron, and the remaining Escort Force to watch the logistics elements. And I'm taking the rest of the fleet to reassert the Chain of Command. If we start letting mere planetary governors hijack major Imperial Navy elements the whole system falls apart.

"I have to put my foot down and tell the sector that the Imperial Navy is still indivisible"

[ ] "-we're going to stay put here, assess the loyalty of the fleet and the system.

"We're going to wait for orders. And if none come, at least we haven't done anything rash. It'll give me time to plan out our next moves if orders don't come through. And figure out the whole situation on the ground in Chandrila and with Kraask."

"I have to put my foot down and tell the sector that the Imperial Navy isn't going to take rash actions."

[ ] "-we're going to secure the Perlimian and Hydrian ways in Bormea.

"Once we've reorganized the fleet, I'm going to divide the fleet to take control of key locations across the sector. I suspect that we're going to see heavy insurgent action unless we take control of key systems like Brentaal, Malvarius, Sakkath and so forth. Maybe out into Esseles Rhiinal if needs be. Aaand I'll order Kraask to secure Corulag. It'll save face until I can figure something out."

"I have to put my foot down and tell the sector that the Imperial Navy is still in control."

That is a beautiful number of Quasar Fires. Very nice to see some Nebulon B's too.

Seles is as fun as I expected she would be. Her fighter focus and fleet composition make her a useful ally to have.

Let's gaslight gatekeep girlboss our way out of the clusterfuck on Chandrila first.

I sense an opportunity for gayness.

...How many of our Nebbies are modified Nebulon-Bs, aka the bane of fighters everywhere?

And goddamn fighter jocks, thinking they're the best of the best of the best. Hrmpf. (That's my inner captain speaking. My fighter jock self is very much understanding of Seles.)

Changing my vote. One hundred ships are too large an opportunity to pass up, and we need to be assertive. Dawdling will just give others a chance to try and take those ships for themselves.

Vaere would never sleep with a subordinate! Fratenization is extremely unprofessional! (And blackmail worthy!)

Your Nebulas are all B2s, which are the "oh no" modified ones. They're mainly used as escorts for transports and auxilaries, where the main worry is strikecraft hit and fades.

Chapter 5 commentary (I guess)

I'm basically going to track the ships, classes, and names for your two most loyal Squadrons, with the rest being more abstracted away at the Squadron Line level because I'm not in the mood to track four hundred-odd starships by name and exact class right now.

Also, goddamn is it hard to find ships with names that aren't currently in service elsewhere. But I also discovered that you can take a botanical term or flower name and add "Blood" or "Death" or something else along those lines and get a suitably badass name.

Also, man, things are shortly going to get really crazy. The first warlords pop up soon. And the Central Committee of Moffs launches in opposition to the Imperial Ruling Council/Sate Pestage/Isard soon. (You know the guys who try to put "Palpatine's three eyed son" in charge, "I bid you Dark Greetings" and all that)

Also, like, man, the 80s and 90s Star Wars EU (Especially RPG supplements) really liked giving Senior Imperials names that sound vaguely unpleasant. Snopps. Really?

Edited, Also: Seles is basically me deciding not let the character concept I had for TIE Ace Vaere go to waste. So all's well that ends well. I use the whole prose Buffalo.

Chandrila is a total loss, imo. Thiromer being a dipshit is almost certainly going to provoke an uprising. If we get involved, it'll just intensify the bloodshed, and even if we win, our prize will be a ruined planet, stacked high with corpses.

It's better to wash our hands of the situation and cut our losses for something more immediately productive, like reminding the local Moffs that taking our shit is a very bad idea.

He's not even a proper Moff, which is why Vaere's nose is so bent out of shape. He's some dipshit politician (Admittedly one with a lot of pull and the de facto sector governor. But it's the principle of the matter!)

So, in case anyone is present who this reference is lost on, this video should provide context:

It's a wild ride. And this Trioculus apparently shows up in other books.

Oh boy. This will give even Rogue Squadron a pause. (Then they'll kill us anyway, because Wedge Antilles is the best starfigher pilot of the EU. But it *will* make them think twice.)

[X] "-I'm going to Corulag to get my ships back.

I want our battlewagons back!

I suspect if we abandon Chandrilla, General Thiromer is going to just slaughter an entire swath of innocent people. If this was a different quest and saving lives was a priority, the choice is clear. However, that's not the goal of this quest.
