Monster (A Star Wars Imperial Navy Defector Quest)

I don't have a problem with DisCan NR disarming - it makes sense for them, honestly. Mon Mothma lived through the Clone Wars and then the Galactic Civil War and probably draws a line between Palps riding to the top on the back of a loyal military and then the rampant militarization of everything. I can definitely see her and other Rebels going "you know what? We don't want anyone getting tempted to do that again," and cutting the military down, especially if the Imp remains were mostly toothless at the time of that decision.

The New Republic is good, actually.

Someone hasn't read just how bad the senate was in Discanon. Like holy shit that thing was... wow.

Anyway, it's not as if we're liable to be held accountable for our crimes (At least, not in a form that isn't a proton torpedo or starfighter to our star destroyer's bridge), and if we dive for hutt space or else set up a warlord state, then we start building leverage so that Admiral Vaere is able to essentially walk away from it, or else pin the blame on someone else. Or else escapes and the NRI has to do a bang-up impression of Mossad. That'd be fun to read.

Look, I'll take dysfunctional and trying to be a better place over the fascist hellhole of the Empire any day.

So, I repeat: the New Republic is good, actually.

Technically, the fact that Shara holds a high position in the Imperial Navy on her own initiative at all—girlboss war criminal or not—is Discanon, since in Legends the Empire was sexist on top of being speciesist and refused categorically to recruit women. The few who did make it in generally did so through nepotism; Daala was Tarkin's mistress and Ysanne Isard was the daughter of the previous head of the ISB, Armand Isard.

There's also the mysterious Betl Oxtroe

There's the superior option of the Defence Declarations, which Legends Mon Mothma used, which proved superior to unilateral disarmament in the situation. Just give the powers to the sectors rather than the federal government

I'll accept better, but good? Honestly, as evidenced by a pirate state that has an SSD as a capital and two neo-CIS states I do not think it is good. Not to mentioned the near damn entirety of the centrist party. Like holy shit you'd half think it'd straight-up crumble the minute something mean looks at it. And probably not helped by going back to the reliance on SDFs as well.

Suffice it to say that the Disney created the DisCon NR to fail. I will not be borrowing a lot of the DisCan NR

I am very eager to how many book plots she can disrupt in support of whatever crazy adventures Skywalkers and Solos get up to, imagine the Solo kids calling her auntie since it would be amusing if she ends up dating Winter who could handle her due to her past in rebel intelligence.

I'm just waiting for the rebel captain she gets partnered with who thinks she'll "flunk out" in a matter of weeks. Oh, he's not going to sabotage her; he doesn't think he needs to. No, it's just what happens when you try putting an apex predator in a pet shop: sure, it SOUNDS like you'll be on top, but your aggression and territorialism just get everyone else spooked and the owner will think you're costing him more money than you could ever hope to earn.

Think of Azula from ATLA trying to "relax" at the Ember Island Resort.

In her current state, Shara probably despises the whole Skywalker-Solo family, especially Luke, whom the galaxy believes to have personally killed both the Emperor and Darth Vader.

Wookieepedia tells me she achieved her position through membership in a mysterious secret organization called the "Order of the Canted Circle" that seems to be some kind of bizarre cross between the Illuminati (it's composed of members drawn solely from the most elite and influential people in the galaxy, and only admits eleven people per decade) and the Space-KKK (its members wore robes, used secret handshakes and code words, and were led by a "Grand Mage").

Skywalker also murdered a bunch of her classmates on the first Death Star

It's one thing to cut the military down somewhat (and the centralisation as well), but to go for nearly no military while not only the Imperial Remnants are waiting in exile, but there are also CIS-successor states around and the Hutt space is presumably as wild and controlled by syndicates and pirates as it always was comes down heavily on the short-sighted end of things.

I kind of want her to meet him at some point in this quest, honestly. It'd be really fun to have her meet someone with a literally supernatural ability to see through all her self-justifying bullshit.

This reminds me of a fan fiction I read where Luke has pretty much that conversation with Piett.

Piett's lip curled. "I'd say the rate of exchange that day was solidly in the Rebellion's favor. Have you any idea how many personnel were assigned to that station?"

"One million, five hundred and fifty-six thousand, two hundred and ninety-six." Skywalker's rock-steady gaze held his. "Not including any civilians or unregistered detainees who might have been aboard. And just getting me a chance to take the shot cost forty-six men their lives, one of them my oldest friend. I call that an expensive victory, yes."

"Nobody twisted your arm, Skywalker," Piett snapped. "You chose to get in that cockpit."

He shrugged. "True. I suppose I could have stayed home and been shot with my aunt and uncle instead. Or gotten to Alderaan a couple of hours earlier and been vaporized with the other two billion people there. Would that have been the upstanding thing to do?"

[X] -Terror. Utter terror.

I like terror, because it really puts the pressure on-and I think we all should know how this lady responds to pressure as of the second vote.

Chaos I
Chaos I

-

Admiral Shara Vaere draws on nearly three decades of military experience and clamps down hard on the yawning void of terror opening up in front of her.

She needs a plan.

She needs time to plan.

She needs to move. Needs to move. Needs to move. Needs to move fast.

She's an Imperial Admiral for fucks' sake, she needs to TAKE CONTROL of the situation.

There has to be someone who can take control of the Empire. There's a- there's a fucking structure to it. She needs to regroup her people and figure out where to do from there.

She looks down as a new communique comes in, Admiral Versio (Stuck up prick, doesn't take no for an answer, the filing cabinet in her mind informs her) being the last man out on Eviscerator, covering the evacuation of a special operations group from the surface of Endor's sanctuary moon.

She needs to make a command decision. And she does.

She spins on her heels, striding briskly towards the aft of Indefatigable's bridge, her Captain Lessam nearly left behind by her sudden action, "Captain Lessam, we need to keep this information Need To Know for now. Inform the squadron that we are pulling out. Secure the ship for hyperspace."

"Aye ma'am. Destination?" he says crisply, relief evident on his features.

"Chandrila. I'm regrouping the fleet."

"Yes ma'am."

She's already at the communications alcove, a mustachioed young officer with haunted eyes looking up at her, "Ma'am!" he snaps out hastily as his superior's superior's superior focuses all of her very formidable attention on him.

Vaere smiles sympathetically at the man, his obvious shock at the gesture covering up the small amount of time she takes to hunt through her mental map of the fleet and pull out a name for the rangy blonde-haired man, "Officer Nimean, you're only six months out of Anaxes, yes?"

The junior officer's mouth gapes just long enough for it to cause him embarrassment, this isn't what he'd been expecting. In the Empire, sometimes the messengers are shot.

But not in Vaere's fleet. Everyone knew that in Vaere's squadrons, Navy respects Navy. (Especially if the Admiral could find some really spicy blackmail.)

"I would expect that you're very familiar with the Imperial Naval Code then Mr. Nimean?"

"Uh, Yes Ma'am-"

Shara holds up her hand in a casual manner, "Right now, I'm concerned with the second and third lines." then she gestures for the blonde haired young man to proceed

"Ma'am, 'I will obey my superiors' and 'I will never shirk my duties', Ma'am."

"Good, officers like us, Academy men and women," she gestures between herself Nimean and Lessam, "we stick together, we see to the interests of the Navy and the Empire."

Nimean nods seriously, the fear in his eyes starting to recede.

"These are extraordinary times Officer, you have a vital task to prevent panic from spreading throughout the fleet before your superiors can address the issue. I am giving you a direct order that no mention of anything at all related to the matter of Endor and subsequent related topics are to be discussed with anyone except myself and Captain Lessam."

"Aye, Ma'am"

"And that all communications regarding the matter should be forwarded to myself and the Captain until such time as I give you further orders on the matter."

"Aye, Ma'am"

"And one final order, I want you to instruct the entire on duty encryption section to remain in their compartments until I can speak with them directly… Terror," she speaks from personal experience, "is a contagious affliction, and we do not need any infectious conditions spreading across the fleet. Navy looks out for Navy."

"Yes Ma'am", says Nimean, smartly, shoulders relaxed for the first time in the entire conversation.

As she turns to leave Officer Nimean to carry out her orders, she gestures Captain Lessam closer, "Instruct the rest of the squadron to maintain a complete communications blackout. Nothing gets on and off those ships except via Indefatigable, and I will ensure that Indefatigable herself is airtight. We need to get ahead of this infection before it consumes us."

Lessam takes a half breath and nods, "Of course Admiral…" a worry creeps across the man's plain features and into his voice, "Ma'am, we can't keep this a secret forever. Are there any other instructions I can pass along?"

Vaere frowns, "Let them know I'll be addressing the fleet when we arrive at Chandrila. But our main priority is to lock down before things get out of hand." she gestures with both hands in a direct show of finality, "I need to ensure that we have complete control of the situation which is why I'm also recalling the other squadron elements to Chandrila."

"Alert Vice Admiral-"

[ ] "-Harst that we're regrouping the fleet at Chandrila."

Admiral Vaere, in her capacity as the commander of one Bormea Sector's superiority fleets commanded more than just the squadron centered around Indefatigable. She also commanded a number of other units that had been spread out to isolate Chandrila at the Emperor's behest.

The largest independent element, sitting on the Perlimian Hyperlane between Corulag and Chandrila is commanded by Vice Admiral Khar Harst aboard his Tector-Class flagship Archer. The rest of the Vice Admiral's squadron is primarily heavy line elements, more heavy units like a pair of Victory-class Star Destroyers.

Harst is a harsh and disciplined man, a former engineer, and loyal to Vaere after then-Lieutenant Vaere saved the career of her ship's engineer from an unscrupulous smear campaign that attempted to frame him for poor ship maintenance.

Once the various fleet elements are reassembled in Chandrila she can figure out what to do next.

The largest independent element, sitting on the Perlimian Hyperlane between Corulag and Chandrila is commanded by Vice Admiral Nala Seles aboard her Imperial-class flagship Invictus. The rest of the Vice Admiral's squadron being comprised of strikecraft heavy elements like Quasar Fire Light Carriers and a pair of strikecraft heavy Vindicator variants.

Seles is something of an easily excitable daredevil, a former TIE pilot, and loyal to Vaere after then-Captain Vaere saved her vessel's wing commander from accusations levelled by jealous former paramours.

Once the various fleet elements are reassembled in Chandrila she can figure out what to do next.

The largest independent element, sitting on the Perlimian Hyperlane between Corulag and Chandrila is commanded by Vice Admiral Tarrid Barre aboard his Imperial-class flagship Pyre. The rest of his squadron consisting of lighter elements like Raiders and Surveyor reconnaissance frigates.

A taciturn and reserved man, Barre is loyal to Vaere because she oversaw his transfer into line operations after he suffered nearly career ending injuries acting as a Naval Infantry liaison during the suppression of Operation Domino.

Once the various fleet elements are reassembled in Chandrila she can figure out what to do next.

Oh boy, I can't wait to get to Chandrila, I'm certain that everything on that Rebel sympathetic core world will be completely normal after news of the rebel victory at Endor arrives.

Strikecraft for life! Never have I seen a MonCal ship nor an Imp go down to something faster than a swarm of fighters and bombers.

Plus precision groundstrikes and the like.
