Memories of Magic (Worm/??? Quest)

I am struggling to come with an IC reason not to.
canon taylor was playing idiot ball by wanting to "prove herself" first on her own before joining the wards. it was rather contrived and served only to allow for a bad first impression with armsmaster to keep her out of wards.

Although, I guess we could try to go rogue, at least for a while as we build ourselves up.

W-

I'm usually all for the wards cuz it's the easiest way to get Taylor friends without breaking the law. However I worry that PRT rules and guidelines will stop us from maximum munchkinning.

Imp'd. This is essentially it. A bit of research would tell us that the PRT places some pretty strict restrictions on what the wards can do, especially Tinkers, which we would likely get lumped in with (regardless of the fact that we really aren't). The benefits to normal Tinkers would be tutelage/collaboration from other Tinkers (which would do nothing for us) and possibly supplies (while we will likely need some supplies, they may not be that expensive, and getting the specific types for our Tinkering might be slower than usual for the PRT as they would be rather odd requests/have to deal with more bureaucracy).

Even in character it's easy to see that we don't get much from the Wards and we face some serious restrictions (not much on the making stuff side mind you, having a ready team, backup, and a reputation just from joining are all still good points to consider for joining as well).

Rogue is definitely an option (especially since our gear may well not need any maintenance), as is going independent. Independent we could join or make a team (and remember we wouldn't require parahumans to have a strong team, decently trained humans with magical gear could do any heroing we needed).

[x] Tell Danny you are a tinker
[x] Do something else.
-[x] Go to local red cross and volunteer as an assistant to a blood drive. You need to learn how to properly draw blood, and also it could be a good source of the medical equipment and training you need to draw your own blood in somewhat larger quantities (but not too much, don't want to become anemic).
-[x] Look at the animal shelter (or online) for a free or cheap puppy of a really small (cheap to feed) dog, and try to get your hands on a maple tree

Plan is to do some experiments with our blood. I want to see if we can reinforce our blood into a reliable mana source so we don't have to keep cutting ourselves.

I also want to reinforce a puppy and a maple tree. The puppy to test if there are harmful side effects on living creature reinforcement (if not, we could reinforce ourselves!)

The tree because I am hoping reinforcing it would let us get an alternative source of magic (maple sap, delicious and magical! also magical food!)

maple trees are surprisingly affordable.

However I worry that PRT rules and guidelines will stop us from maximum munchkinning.
Can you come up with a single example that is something we would actually do as a non villain that they would block us on?

That is nonsense. It would be extremely useful for us to collaborate and get tutelage from other tinkers.
Remember that every tinker has their own speciality. tutelage is not them teaching you how to use your powers, it is them giving you useful advice like "enemies often do X, you need to have better mobility" and the like. As for collaboration, our ability to enchant the work of other tinkers is absolutely ridonculous.
as is going independent.
Independent is an option, it is just a really stupid one that makes zero sense.
A lot of people choose it, but a lot of people choose to do heroin too.

I will admit that this took me long enough to concede the point, however if it ever gets out to the youthguard that we have to cut ourselves to use our powers, could get annoying. (PRT therapists might get in the way, but i'm unsure if its fanon that piggot binned them)

Kid Win's Alternator Canon. We could have the perfect tool built and lined up, ready to go against a villainous threat... but because we hadn't gone through the long review process, it wouldn't be allowed. Even if it did work we could be brought up on disciplinary charges if we tried to ignore that. And I understand there are reasons for it, but it would still very much be something that is limiting us, even if we were entirely heroic.

That is something that could be gotten from other experienced capes, tinker wouldn't really be any more applicable. Yes our magic could be ridiculous with Tinkers. It could also be equally strong with Trumps or other categories. Can Tinkers still be helpful, can we still work with them? Of course, but no matter how much we look like one, we are not a Tinker, so we don't get anything extra out of it.

Independent is an option, it is just a really stupid one that makes zero sense.
A lot of people choose it, but a lot of people choose to do heroin too.

And this is bordering on belligerent. There are plenty of reasons why someone would be willing to trade less resources for less oversight and go independent, comparing it to drug use makes no sense. I've been trying to present a balanced approach and look at all the possibilities we can go for but if you aren't going to use any logic to make your case and just randomly compare a side you don't like to heroin then please just drop this matter.

Kid Win's Alternator Canon.
Is a danger to himself and everyone around him.

Whoa there, the argument was that they wouldn't allow us to perform certain experiments necessary for our power's growth.

Which is completely and utterly different from the requirement that a finished product be tested in the lab before it is allowed on the field.

Such a requirement will not in any way slow our growth. If anything it will accelerate because a team of experts will perform details tests of our hardware and provide us with detailed information on the results.
And this is bordering on belligerent.
No, it is just facts. Canonically independent heroing is suicidal, it is also moronic because they are insisting on being a "lone wolf" hero that doesn't need no help when almost always they do.

Also, I am not saying you are stupid for saying it is an option (which would make me belligerent), because you are correct and it is an option as per canon.
I am saying that those characters in canon that choose this option are stupid for choosing it
Stupidity Is the Only Option - TV Tropes
Idiot Ball - TV Tropes
The plot requires them to act stupid, so they do.
There are plenty of reasons why someone would be willing to trade less resources for less oversight and go independent
Name one reason. A specific one. Oversight is a platitude, give a specific thing that a specific hero would want to do that "oversight" would disrupt. The only thing it would is if they want to do something suicidal, or criminal. The latter would make them a vigilante villain rather than a hero.

Independent heroing has only drawbacks and zero benefits. And their death toll is utterly massive compared to other heroes as a result.

If you utterly loathe the PRT, you still shouldn't be independent, just join a non-PRT organization.

Uh, you're pretty far off on that. Kid Win was allowed to build and bring the Alternator Cannon around. He was suspended from his artillery privileges for using an untested nuclear powered artillery piece on a site containing civilians.

Tinkers and those like Dauntless generally get to build, keep and use whatever they make. The PRT has no actual means of enforcing a ban on a particular piece of equipment, because the sole source of reliable information on a piece of Tinkertech is it's creator alone.

Kid Win was punished for criminal irresponsibility with a slap on the wrist. Don't misread that into a general policy of oppression. The PRT has too much on it's plate to actually spare that much attention to ensuring that their own Tinkers hadn't gotten everything certified.

Testing is mandatory for the following purposes:
-A piece of technology is intended for the use of someone other than the Tinker.
-A piece of technology is intended for the use on someone other than the Tinker(note, this is at the DIrector's discretion). Weapon systems get as much compulsory testing as most Blasters(i.e. none), but any consequences of mishap are on the Director's head.
-A piece of technology makes use of questionable techniques or resources.
-A piece of technology has been abused in contravention of other policy.

[X] Tell Danny nothing. It's not like you've been talking to him lately anyways, and you can decide to tell him later when you have more proof.
[X] Meditate on your past life.
-[X] Your abilities, the cons, the benefits, and any tips/hints

for just one example Tattletale could find that out about us, and then pass it along to Coil,
No, she couldn't. She's not a mind reader, nor is she good enough to accurately emulate one. Even if she caught us in the act, she's more likely to draw the conclusion that we're an idiot who merely thinks that this is going to work.

Remember that her power feeds her garbage. She's got to sort through the irrational to find what is most likely true. If the truth reads like an absurd impossibility, then she's going to throw it out.

It's the difference between a high intelligence score and Intellectus.

Another option is to make up some samples of durability boosted items and showing them to new wave. Get a contract with them to enchant their costumes for money and legal aid then we can offer our services to the PRT and other hero groups as well.

Undersiders would be a good choice as well, most interesting too in my opinion and we would be able to plot with Tattletale to take out Coil in the future.

Ok, that is a real concern, but remember that I both didn't suggest we go it alone and that we could form or join a team 'independent' of the PRT, and that the risk may be real but it's definitely skewed. Most heroes before six months is up either join the PRT, join a gang, form a gang, form their own hero group, or go vigilante/full villain independently, with the remainder having a high death rate in the first six months (which is probably also impacted by the high death rate of Endbringer fights if they go to the one or two that occur in that time).

Uh, you're pretty far off on that. Kid Win was allowed to build and bring the Alternator Cannon around. He was suspended from his artillery privileges for using an untested nuclear powered artillery piece on a site containing civilians.

I'm not saying that it isn't sensible or even sane for the PRT to have some wariness around untested tech, but it is something that can also slow us down. Also could you point out where the PRT has too much going on to make sure everything is certified? Not meaning to be rude or anything just wondering where it is cause I missed it.

-A piece of technology makes use of questionable techniques or resources.

The first two are where a lot of our magic items are going to go and the third one kinda covers everything we do, by virtue of being different (and yes a lot of things would pass easily, but it still makes our stuff stand out and be inspected more).

As I said before, there are plenty of benefits and downsides to joining the PRT (and some of these apply to any group for that matter), but any 'tinkering' benefits when weighed against the restrictions are likely pretty low for us

I'm going to finish up the meditation sequence after class, and if the Danny Deniers still have the lead when I'm done with that, I'll start the rest of the update. In other words, the vote will be open for another 3 or 4 hours.

On the topic of the Rules of Magic (caps may or may not be deserved) I came up with a couple last night that should give you clues on how to structure your own rituals. If anyone has ideas that they think are just too awesome to pass up, feel free to pm them to me. I'm looking for semi-specific rules that would give structure to ritual creation. Example: The more alive a reagent is, the more the methods of its harvesting matter (this rule will be included in your dream sequence so spoilers towards tonight).

Interesting quest concept. I think I'll jump on the bandwagon here:

[X] Tell Danny nothing. It's not like you've been talking to him lately anyways, and you can decide to tell him later when you have more proof.
[X] Mediate on your past life.

Telling Danny is something that should probably happen eventually, but I think it'd be wise to wait until Taylor can do her magic without bleeding herself. As for the Wards....not until Taylor is clearly and obviously more useful then Sophia. That's OOC logic, but IC she wanted to prove herself first, which amounts to the same thing.

In the meantime, as soon as she boosts toughness to bulletproof, she has a very valuable product. I think the New Wave idea is a good start- it gives contacts and money without the recruitment attempts the PRT would make, and with the resources gained there Taylor would be in a better position to negotiate with the PRT and other factions. In the long run she'll probably want to at least partner with the PRT for exotic ingredients (i.e. the Spear of Endbringer Slaying that needs a piece of an Endbringer to make) but for the near future I think Independence is the better option.

Long run, I want a set with 100+ Sanctuary, because making everyone inexplicably miss you is one of the funnier forms of invulnerability.

We'd have to send a sample to convince them that we're not just messing with them, of course.

It's been mentioned before, that is called a Rogue.

Joining a non PRT team is not going independent, its joining a team...
if we do sell stuff it should be to the military. let's put the PRT out of business.
Now that WOULD be interesting.
I wonder how tough we can make NORAD

One of the things I found funny was in Memories of Iron (Taylor with Tony Stark memories) Taylor sells suits to foreign governments first because American laws weren't letting her sell the armor without outing herself.

If we can get an in with the local PD it might be good too. Not sure if fanon but supposedly the PRT and the PD aren't on the best of terms, and having an ally in the Mayor would be a huge help in navigating the rogue bureaucracy.

You can't help but let out a sigh of relief as you see your Dad drive away for another day at work. He tries his best to be a good father, but damn if his best isn't good enough. Last night at dinner he asked if you thought you would be fine returning to Winslow. The fact that he could ask that with a straight face shows how little he actually knew about what you went through.

You let out a huff and close the blinds. No reason to let poor familial relations sour your mood when you could be learning more magic. Sitting criss-cross on the floor, you close your eyes. When you meditated before, you just thought of nothing, and hoped something came to mind. Now, though, you have a better idea of what you are doing.

You focus in on the source of your magic. You felt it yesterday when you held the sweatshirt you enchanted. The power comes from somewhere beyond your body, then flows into you through your blood. Following the flow backwards, you reach into your soul...

"Daaa! I'm ready! I had my first blood a whole week ago! Ma says you're just lazy."

You jump up and down in front of your dad. He looks up from the wand he is carving, a faint smile on his face.

"I guess you are, and I guess I am. Well, let's get this over with. Now," he says sternly, though the smile never leaves his face, "tell me the basis of our craft."

"Magic comes from stories and magic. I know all the rules, Da," you grumble. He's already made you waste a whole week when you could be learning magic; making you recite rules you've known for years is boring!

"You might know the rules, but do you know the why behind them? Why's are the important things for us crafters, not rules." Da settles in on his bench, and you roll your eyes as you know you're in for a lecture.

"Take the law of living reagents. 'The importance of the means by which a reagent is offered forth is dependent on the life force of the reagent.' The rule means that stone or metal can come from anywhere; only the state it is in when the ritual starts matters. With plant matter, the history matters. With animal reagents, not only the item's history but also your own interactions with it will affect the ritual. For reagents from Living Spirits, well, don't try to use those without a good deal of care and consideration.

"Now, knowing all this is fine and dandy, but if you focus on the rules, you'll miss the the forest for the trees. Remember the first law: 'Magic comes from stories and magic.' Magic coming from magic is simple; you need magic to make magic. Magic from stories is complex. Every rule, including the first, comes from this axiom. A stone has a story, and thus can take part in magic. The stone cares not for its own story, though, so it is the stories people tell of the stone that matter. A tree has a story, and it will always work towards telling it. It cares not for who listens, or what others say, so the story a crafter tells matters equally.

"Animals have stories, and depending on their strength of mind, they may greatly care who listens. A crafter must always be careful when working with beings capable of thought, as the story they tell themselves can easily overpower any story you try and force upon them.

"Enough philosophy. Let's design your first ritual. Recite what I've taught you about implements."

You barely stifle a yelled, "Yes! Um, I mean, yes, Da. An implement allows a crafter to imbue a ritual with magic without the sympathetic link of blood. In order to do so, the ritual to create the implement must include all methods you wish to perform with it. Traditional implements use numerology, runic symbolism, verbal commands, physical actions, reagents, elemental mysticism, and sometimes temporal and spatial symbolism. If you don't include a method while making the implement, then you won't be able to use that method while enchanting with the implement.

"The ritual to create the implement involves tying the implement to its owner with each method. Each method must either represent the owner of the implement, or work to increase the power of the implement. A person may have as many implements as they wish, though a new implement should always be created through blood, and not with a previous implement."

Your da beams at you, and pats you on the head. "Good, good..."

Your eyes open. For a minute, you revel in the feelings the memory sparked in you. You were so excited to finally be able to perform magic, and the contentment that flooded through you when your da praised you is something you haven't felt for a long time.

Finally, you make yourself get up as your stomach grumbles at you. It is three in the afternoon, long after you should have eaten lunch.

As you make yourself a sandwich, you jokingly consider ritualized food preparation. You are fairly certain it would work, but you should probably wait to experiment until you have created an implement. You don't think people would be eager to eat food that had your blood in it, even if it was magical food. Plus, you are pretty sure that there are some downsides to using your blood in a ritual, even if you can't remember what they are yet...

Sandwich in hand, you sit yourself down at the table in your living/dining room and think. It looks like you have a choice in front of you. You can either go ahead with creating an implement to save your poor fingers, or can try to figure out more rituals first so you actually have something to use your implement for.

If you decide to make an implement, you'll need an object to be the implement, as well as a number of methods to represent yourself through symbolism. You may want to meditate and see what your alter-ego used for her ritual.

You grumble to yourself around the sandwich in your mouth, and go to fetch some homework from your room. While you are deciding, you can at least do something useful with your time.

(QMN: Here's a short post. We're off to a slow start, but things will kick off once we get out of our week at home. Whoa, I pulled a lot of magical metaphysics out of my ass in order to write this dream sequence and plan for future ones. Hopefully it makes sense. If it doesn't, tell me what seems like nonsense and I'll rewrite it. Also, I fully expect to do a lot of meditation this week, but be brave! We still have a couple hours before Danny gets home, so we can experiment with our magic and meditate tomorrow (today was Tuesday). While you technically have three choices, you can feel free to choose all three, at least for this first week when we have plenty of free time.)

(QMN: Added one line. Hopefully that makes creating an implement a little clearer. If it doesn't, eh, just meditate on it ;))
