Communing with the light is a strange experience. You've gotten used to it rather quickly, but frankly you're not really able to properly describe it. It's a religious experience that defies any words you could use. But the end result gives you both a feeling of contentment, and a desire to fight and defend.
Your target is a predator of the weak and dying. A cowardly thing that dwells in the shadows. Part of you wants to track it down immediately, but the rest of you realizes that this is the best way to get killed. First you have to interpret the vague warnings.
And you have to deal with your own life too. Your father is a deadbeat, but he would be very displeased if you were to fail out. And without the vague prospect of the bodybuilding career, you have no income whatsoever lined up. You lack the income and ability to go through college really, and what would you do in the end? You're good at physical things. Mental things are your worse aspect.
So you go through the day with determination and dedication. You will figure out something.
Mr Smith puts you through the paces at the end of the day. Your weakest aspect isn't your body. It's your presentation. Bodybuilding has a set of poses and flexes you have to go through. Being unconfident, or doing them wrong is the surest way to fail. Which was what your problem was the last time you did this.
You also start doing the cutting process. Which is frankly hellish. Normally you have more time. You aren't going to be able to get yourself at your best by next week. Fortunately it's a Junior competition, so you don't have to be spectacular. If you get in the top three you have a shot at the nationals at the end of the year. With that under your belt, you could potentially get a sponser, and go into the pro league.
Technically you could also do a shift to the weightlifting side. That would involve just deadweights. It's less painful to deal with diet wise, but it would also require you dedicate yourself to just lifting. Cardio would be far less important, and you rather need that if you wish to go out and fight things that go bump in the night.
What would be best is if you could get a steady income for just fighting things, but that's a dream.
You put thoughts of the future out of your mind when you go to talk with Faith after school in the warehouse. The girl's got a target up already, and is firing. She's at least hitting it, which is nice. But there's a bit difference between a moving target and a still one.
"Hey Hammer-man." Faith calls out as you enter. "Got the hang of the sighting at least. Gonna see about swinging it from a rope next. Got a pully and some rope to setup. Need your shoulders though."
"All right." You nod and move over to her.
It's a fair bit more awkward than you realize as the girl climbs up you. You've been doing a good job ignoring how attractive the girl was, but having her on your shoulders with her legs wrapped around your head is a great way of reminding you. Fortunately the girl doesn't seem to notice, and has the pully tied up to a rafter in the warehouse quickly.
"Where did you get this stuff?" You mutter as you let her down.
"Diana's got a whole lot of things. This is part of it." Faith shrugs. "So long as I'm not stupid with it, she trusts me with it. Which is kinda stupid, but it's nice."
"You think it's stupid to trust you?" You could sort of understand, you think? But really, aside from being a wild girl Faith doesn't seem to be a bad person. You've seen far worse.
The girl cocks her hip and gives you a saucy smile. "I'm a bad girl don't ya know. Drink all day, party all night. All the girls say I'm a slut, and they ain't wrong really. Probably gonna pick up another boy and drop him this week. There's a cutie that hit the party scene, and he needs a bit of a ride."
"I trust you." You state simply. And you do. You're not going to overthink it. The girl wants to fight after seeing you kill a vampire. Helped you when you needed it. And was still showing good judgment even now. Practicing without complaint or prompting.
Faith immediately turns around and starts to fiddle with the crossbow. "Yeah well, you're a meathead. I never thought you had sense. Considering you think it's a good idea to hunt down things that can squish you, I'm pretty certain I'm right too."
"Isn't that crossbow already loaded?" You ask curiously.
"Just adjusting a few sights." The girl mutters in reply and waves at the rope at the side. "Get the target moving? I want to try a few shots with it going."
"All right." You state and pull on the rope.
The girl's shots go very wide. And somehow you aren't particularly surprised.
Talk devolves after that to what you're doing at the moment, and somehow you end up doing a few of the stances that Mr Smith had you practicing. To Faith's credit, she's serious about the critique. Which isn't a bad thing really.
