Matter of Faith (BTVS / OC)

Seems like it. Or at least, we can make more specific and elaborate equipment. Rather than being forced to rely on a template.

Who knows. We might be able to make a holy gun/crossbow someday.

Well, considering that age is just gene damage, both heal and raise dead (if dead) should work on old age. Cleanse would also be effective. And it's not like we couldn't get a custom healing ability for lots of tiny things if we work on it quite a lot: I refuse to believe that the Light is incapable of making up a new configuration to apply our existing healing abilities to if the alternative is us not being able to help people anymore.

So age is actually not really an issue, as long as we don't fall. Silly goddess.

You are close but not completely correct unfortunately, while most of ageing is just damage to the body and genes. The Brain is also affected, its not just a program and hardware like a computer which can be replaces/repaired. Rather its what's known as 'wetware', which uses a combination of charge and 'PHYSICAL' connections to store data (you/memories ect)

As you get older your brain is constantly making connections (memories) then it makes even more. The problem is that eventually you run out of room and/or have to many connections. which means that you have a lot of difficulty learning new stuff or go insane because the connections don't make sense/ are trapped in a loop. its what causes senility and why as you get older you don't like to change.

The brain just isn't set up for living more that 140 years, it takes a complete redesign to do so.

So yeah immortality is really really hard :(

are you sure I know I've heard it before but every time it's come up both in Naruto under the sharringon debates and in an academy city quest about the mini Archive girl from Dresden files where people talk about the brain running out of room pretty much everyone always says it's outdated and a myth.

The brain can go for about a millennium before running out of extra space, it's just that it degrades before that because of stupid external problems like build ups of poison and damage and stuff. This does, of course, beg the flame-bait question: if evolution means that only traits that are successful get passed on, why would something already so ridiculously complex have additional awesome bits that aren't apparent in the creatures life time?

Its actually the build up of connections that is the main problem, the brain does have ways of dumping memory when we reach our max capacity.
I don't know where those people are getting their information from but never running out of room is stupid, the brain can physically hold a TB or around there. So once we hit that things start going wrong as our brain dumps random chunks, i don't really count that as functioning so while it would keep living.... well it would be back to the drunken monkey days of thought.

If you want proof look how we remember time, one of the ways we judge time is by how large a chunk of memory is compared to our total used memory. Its why when we were kids time seemed to take forever, then as we got older thing that happened a year ago seemed close and finally when we reach old age. Time begins to fly past so fast that years seems like a small amount of time.

I really like your portrayal of powers beyond human comprehension. The tolling of bells as speach, the double speak/existance of the thirteen (demons AND angels as one!) and little things like the Light just not considering human aging. Existances like Light and Dark see the world so differently that they simply need to consciously remember thet mortals die of old age.

Once more, thank you for writing this (and any other) story.

So... anyone else feel like votin'?

Exactly, this is why I'm glad I came up with that interlude.
It was excellent.

Year 1 Week 1
[X] See if Faith would like to hang out
[X] Ask for a quest

Fighting was more than swinging a weapon. More than firing a gun. In older times it was an artform. A way of moving, swinging, breathing. Some of it had survived, but the advent of the firearm had forced much of it into obscurity. That was fine really. War was the evolution of killing. Obsolete ideas died in the modern age. There was no room for frivolity or nostalgia. The fields of battle were littered with the bones of those who failed to realize this.

Perhaps that was why the world of demons and vampires was such a shock to people. A vampire would laugh off a gunshot. A sword wound. Your hammer would crush their bones and break their bodies, but even that was something that wouldn't keep them down. And that was just vampires. Often thought of the weakest of the things that went bump in the night.

Diana hadn't gotten much into it with you, but Jet had picked up a fair amount. Your blessed hammer and immense strength would only bring you so far.

The dark creatures that prayed on humans laughed at modern ideas. Magic and hunger dominated their lives, and that changed so slowly that some demons could lay claim to call upon the first gods, and be right.

So to really fight and drive back them all, one had to call upon the same ideas. Your light. Faith's newfound abilities. Practice, and effort. Belief, and determination.

Your hammer twirled as you shifted to the side, ignoring how the blade flashed by your eye. Half step forward, and move your hands up just so, to get the best acceleration.

Then Faith twisted with absolute grace, and stepped twice. Like a dancer, but far more deadly. Like that she was outside your reach, and the hammer swing missed by a hair. Then the sword licked out twice, tagging your arm and your leg. Gently, though it would have bruised were you not wearing armor. All in the time it took you to move.

"Hammer's brute force." Faith inclines her helmeted head, and salutes with the sword she's using. A delicate looking thing that was both sharp and deadly. "Good against slower stuff."

"Most of which we fight." You grunt and reset your stance, cracking your neck. "Also why I asked you to use that skill."

"Not exactly fair, but hey whatever revs your motor." Faith holds out the weapon in a ready stance. "Let's me get better with it too."

You chuckle as you charge forward. Tomorrow school started again. It felt like a lot longer had passed since the vacation started. Things had changed in ways that were hard to explain. You had your motorcycle license, and the ability to drive wherever you wanted. Your father had cut back on his drinking by quite a bit. Jet had started really getting into something on the computer.

But the biggest change was probably Faith. She moved differently now. She prowled. She snapped forward like an asp sometimes when she felt like it. Yet she partied less. Smiled more and less bitterly. And she could fight. More than the play acting she did before. It was a graceful thing when she wasn't using her new abilities. But when she was, you were at her mercy. Poetry in motion. You had both clicked somehow in a way that was strangely intimate even when you didn't do more than walk together.

The blessings of her new patron were good for her. You hadn't even noticed how fragile she had been before. Careful of her own mortality.

Being a handmaiden of war had never been such an apt name. Faith threw herself into battle now, and did it with such glorious beauty that one could just watch in awe. Not that you ever would though. You had your own things to do.

"You got a new task didn't you?" Faith asks once you finish and pull off your respective helmets.

"Yes." You frown. "Hunting in frost covered graveyards. It's a bit less specific than it was before."

Faith shrugs. "Not always going to be easy." The girl pauses as she looks in the distance. "And apparently The Light sometimes has bad visibility."

You tilt your head. "You have something like my quests now? That's not the first time I've seen you do that."

"More an adviser." The brunette chuckles. "Blue can't always be there, but she's apparently got a whole host of lackeys. I got one on a direct line. Chatty little fucker when she feels like it."

"What does she say?" It doesn't sound exactly sane if you didn't know about the magic really, and you were still a bit wary.

"She's the sword." Faith holds up her weapon, and you blink a few times. "So she's all about footwork and how I'm using her." The weapon dissolves into sparkles. "You have no idea how nitpicky she is with my footwork."

You can't help but chuckle at that.

Faith sticks out her tongue.

Huh, cool, Faith's got some sort of sword-spirit companion then?

Aww, that's nice. :)

So should we try and get together that wrestling team?
Also, let's train Mentality now.

[X] Train Mentality
[X] Ask your friends about the 'frost covered graveyards'.
[X] Bring up to Mr Smith that you'd like to try and start a wrestling team.

Astral is good for her, that's great. Well that and her newfound abilities.

I don't like that we are already going on a new quest. I'd rather train more, especially for Faith to become really accustomed with her new abilities before we draw more attention to us.

The reward is great though.

Diana will most likely have an idea what it's about. Probably not a real graveyard in the traditional sense.

[X] Study more to bring your grade up. It's useful to have a better grade so that you have a leeway on your grade if you have to miss school.
