Matter of Faith (BTVS / OC)

Saturday W1 Vampires
[X] Start checking out graveyards.
-[X] Jet's girlfriend might be willing to help narrow things down, ask him if he'd be willing to ask her on our behalf.
-[X] Faith would be most likely willing to help as well, while Diana is unlikely to object. Ask them for some extra hands and some help in working out what graveyards we should worry about most.

----

It wasn't snowing, yet the frost swirled around the ground anyway. A light mist that fled when activity occurred. It heralded the oncoming cold and winter. Likely a brutal one based on what you were feeling in the cold. Fortunately you couldn't feel it in your armor, so you were able to move with relative ease.

The moon hung high and full above you as you walked through the graveyard. One of the three most likely ones that you had managed to identify. Frost covered graveyards were apparently a good candidate for certain spells, and Jet's girlfriend was quite happy to tell a 'fellow practitioner' about them. You didn't bother to correct her on the differences between you and her. The girl was disturbingly enthusiastic about learning about spells. A rather good match for Jet really.

Movement made you pause and heft your hammer.

Then the vampires came. A half-dozen of them charging from the distance, flailing wildly with bare hands at you. Confident in their unnatural strength.

The first one hit the head of your hammer face first, knocking it off it's feet, but not dead. The second exploded as the spike hit something vital. Then the third was on you. Monstrous strength against your simply mortal strength. Normally no contest. You could feel your armor creek as he grabbed and attempted to pry at the armor.

None of them expected what happened next. Your hand grabbed and you channeled your power. The vampire screamed in brief and hideous pain, and erupted into ash.

This gave the remaining ones pause. But not much as they attempted to dog-pile you. Uncoordinated and without skill. Probably the only thing that kept you from dying from simply attrition. It was a mob more than a pack of predators. Your hammer lashed out and shattered limbs. Broke bones on unnatural forms. One by one they went to dust, until there was only one left crawling away in fear. And then none as you shattered the things skull with a strike.

You didn't come out unscathed of course, but with a bit of healing you were relatively pristine at the end of it. At this point you followed where Faith had decided to scout with all your speed.

You find the girl standing casually in the armor you formed for her a few seconds later. You'd say she looked annoyed, but it's mostly body language thanks to the helmet. She's tapping her sword on her thigh and looking out at the graves.

"You good? I heard something while was dealing with a few here." The girl asks curiously.

"Took a few hits. How many?" You move to her side and look around.

"Four here. I think I saw a few gang signs." The girl sighs as she tilts her helmeted head at you. "Gang war I think."

"A gang war?" The thought didn't come to your head at this point. "Why? For that matter, why in a graveyard?"

"Just a thought. Most the vamps around here don't gather like this for no reason. And I saw two different signs before we got hit." Faith pauses. "Would have to hit the party house again. Haven't been there recently, and they'd likely know."

"You've not been partying?" You blink down at her.

"Been busy. Still gonna go, but things slow down in the winter anyway. Well usually." The girl sighs. "Ah well, not like I didn't have fun kicking ass, but if I'm right we're gonna have a lot more trouble."

"Something to keep in mind then. But why a graveyard." You frown behind your helmet.

Faith nudges you. "Want to hit the other ones? It'd take all night, but we'd at least be sure this wasn't a one off thing."

[X] Sure.
-[X] Wars are usually about important things. Look for clues while you fight.
-[X] Bring up the possibility of interrogation.

That's close enough to my vote.

Because Faith has a power for that, so we just need to beat them down to almost kill them, before we do so.

Kill all the Vampires. Then they can't run away and tell their boss.

[X] No ask faith if she wants to go hang out instead

We almost got overrun and we still have plenty time to finish the quest. Also I would like to see the relationship with faith actually develop. You actually have to put time into a relationship fir it to develop.

Body count now 22 dead vampires, 1 dead demon and one human in a coma.

So much for low profile, oh well, better make sure they don't defile graveyards with dark rituals or whatever.

Which spell did Astral use?

I think looking for clues while fighting is likely to get us killed. We are not good enough to not be paying full attention to the vampires we fight just yet.

That's not really what's meant by that line. What it means is to search for clues as we go around town wrecking vampires; searching kind of implies that we aren't doing it while there are "Living" vampires nearby, because you can't really get any searching done while fighting for your life. :V

Oh, and this is apparently my first bandwagon vote! I'm so happy.

AN: Not been feeling this quest at the moment. Still trucking along though.
----

The next graveyard is colder. Frost crunches under your boots, and it's deathly quiet. You tilt your head as you walk past the gravestones and listen quietly. The only thing you hear is Faith stepping along with you. The contrast is stark compared to your previous hunt.

You almost miss the sound in the distance. A methodic crunching sound that just reaches your ears. Nothing like the sounds of footsteps. More rhythmic. It takes a moment to identify it actually. Sort of like the sound of ice cubes being crunched. It's not vampires. Reguardless, you move towards it anyway.

A shiver goes up your spine. Something cold and demonic is close. You grip your hammer with gloved hands and shift into a more aggressive stance. Faith says nothing, but you can tell she takes a step back to cover your rear.

The sound of the crunching is coming from one of the graves. A fresh one based on the dirt everywhere. The thing causing it isn't something you can identify right off. A massive furry thing. Larger than you, and covered in dirty white fur that literally flakes off snowflakes. As you get closer you can tell the sound of the crunching.

The grave has been disturbed. The corpse pulled out of the coffin, and frozen solid. As you watch, the demon rips another frosty part off the body. It rises it up to its face and bites down.

Crunch, crunch.

It's horrifying in a distant sort of way. A monster casually devouring a newly dead person. You feel a bit of fear at it's appearance. But righteous rage too. Desire to destroy something abominable.

You don't get a chance to attack though. The beast sniffs, and looks up as you get closer. The glowing eyes fix on your form, and it breaths out frost as it's mouth drops the part it was chewing. Then slowly and deliberately it gets to it's feet. It's hands spread out and you see several thick and chipped nails as it begins to growl.

Then it moves faster than it has a right to. Straight at you.

It's fierce and deadly. Far more skilled than your previous opponents. Or rather more instinctually lethal. Your hammer hits it's head as it lunges, but does little more than shake it off course. It rolls with the impact and continues to fight without more than a flinch.

Faith takes advantage of the focus on you ruthlessly though. As it bites at you her blade draws a bright red streak across it's back.

Not enough still. A clawed hand impacts one of your pauldrens, and scratches the metal with a horrendous shriek. Your arm jerks under the hit, and you feel something pop. Then the second hit impacts your body, hitting your helmet with horrific and unnatural strength. Your helmet cracks, and you're thrown back in agony.

Faith steps in, sword weaving around her in divine grace.

You have a second. Channeling your magic, you force it to heal. Your shoulder pops back in with an agonizing crack, and the armor's damage is reversed. You get to your feet with a groan, just in time to see Faith mistake a strike, and nearly lose her sword as it sticks into the demon's body.

It's not slowing down. If anything the creature's speeding up. The wounds are doing nothing but spattering it's body with bright red blood.

Regardless you wade back in. Hammer swinging out. It backhands you mid swing, impacting your stomach and throwing you back a full foot. You keep your feet barely, but the damage is enough to make you gasp.

Faith's attack aborts as the monster continues to swing wildly. This is a monster that you can't let hit. She knows it, even as she continues to dance in and out.

Your next strike is surer, but again does too little. The icy demon snarls and lets out a low screaming groan that's both terrifying and terrible. Like a man screaming as he's flayed alive. There is no other description.

You strike out again. Enough to push it back just a little. To give you and Faith a bit of room as the demon steps back and watches you warily.

Your armor crunches as you move, and you look down. Frost is eveywhere. Parts of your armor have near icicles on it. Far more than is natural. You can almost feel the ice starting to bite into your body now that you notice. This isn't natural.

"Shit." Faith mutters from your side, and you can tell she's noticed the same thing. "Getting harder to move."

You step back warily. "Pull back." You could keep fighting, but with the way the ice was coating your armor, you didn't want to see what happened if you lingered.

Step by step, you move. The demon watches you with glowing eyes, but doesn't make to attack. Soon you're far enough away that it's out of sight.

The crunching starts up again, and you shiver.
