Magical Girl Home Base Quest

They're Nazis. Nobody ends up better-off but the leadership, and a lot of people both on their side and not get screwed over.

A Sealed Letter of Death
Sitting at the small round table were two girls, one in black and one in white.

"This is the last one I can get you." The one in white warned. "They've figured out I'm giving them away."

"I'll only need one shot." The one in black promised.

"I hope so, for your sakes."

It was several days later that things finally came to a head between the Witches of the Delta and the Sirens of Pontchartrain. War was in the air and waves, as the girl in black ducked behind cypress trees and through the swamps along the north edge of the lake. If she could get back to Amite, from there it would be a short walk across the inverse of the world to reach New Orleans and her target.

"Well, ain't this'un a find!" a voice called up from up in a tree. Looking up, the girl hissed. One of the Sirens, her matte feathers dripping with gore as the wrung neck of a Familiar sat in her claws sat there, smiling a vulture's smile. "Been a fair while since I smelled me a martyr in the making!"

"The cypress swamps are neutral ground."

"Oh, don't you give your gran-mere that!" the Siren said, cackling. "At least give me a name, girly, so I don't take you out for a ride where the Three Sisters are waiting. Got 'em fresh up from mon amis in Detroit, and they be right hungry from the swim down here."

"Souvalaki." The girl in black said. "What will passage cost?"

"A bad turn against the voduns would be a good start." The Siren said. "They started this war, and it'll be the blood of them and their loa we spill to end it. Swear on a Name you'll break the first piece of gris-gris you find, I call this passage even."

"Fine." Souvalaki said. "I, Souvalaki-"

"I no said what I called you, girl." The Siren spat. "I said your Name."

"I, Marie Grant, swear to break the first piece of gris-gris I find."

The Siren cackled. "Good girl. Keep on walking now, and I might even forget what you just told me."

Shaking her head, Souvalaki just kept moving through the swamp. It wasn't long before she hit Amaris, and then it was a walk across the inverse of the world to reach New Orleans and her target.

The Vodun Witches were good, but they were still bound by ritual. It was there, in the courtyard where the morning empowerment happened, that she planted her charges. Nine inconspicuous bricks, coated in symbols and thrumming with magic, they were not out of place in the cobbled square. All that remained was finding a garret to hide in, and to wait for morning to come.

When the sun and stars brought the appointed time about, the square was full of the devout Witches and their Familiars. The Queens had been warned to keep their hands away from this fight, and no mortal man would die here today. These creatures had forsaken humanity long ago.

Quietly, then louder and louder, the singing began and the drums were beaten. Each Witch was choosing her Loa, preparing for the day's war as they sang and preened in front of their hoards. Settling down, Souvalaki pricked her finger to draw blood, and inscribed the circle on the wood of her perch.

"Let the snake's skin come and whet their cries for attention." She muttered, the spell to arm the devices warm in her hands. "Let the ashes come and clean the remains."

The trap was set; as their ritual escalated higher and higher, more and more of the Witches completed the bargains for power. Then, as the lead Witch completed her binding, the gates of the trap slammed shut. Each brick started unfolding, the hundreds of runes encapsulated in each lighting up as they raised a dome around the event. Nothing was severed, so the seniormost Witches weren't worried about it.., until their shoes were soaked in the water pouring forth. The semicircle had revealed the method of their destruction: drowning. More than a few of the younger witches charged the barrier, slamming their fists and magery at it, and the sweeping waves of cinders that erupted in response killed no few number of them.

It was about an hour before the dome's work was finished, the Witches dead and destroyed. Nodding to herself, Souvalaki dismounted her perch and got to work destroying their tools.

Only one Commission tonight since I had work today and I'm kinda shot out. I should have the next one done tommorow, then another one that came in for me, and update on Saturday or Monday, schedule depending.

So I guess that was a super bomb? Able to kill what I'm going to call a 'Queendom' of Witches with zero collateral damage though it required set up and the witches to be distracted.

Also Witches apparently can choose Loas for something though I'm not sure if they're picking which vodoo god they're getting a power up from or which one they're summoning to use as a minion. Maybe witches can do both with some binding them and others sacrificing to? Also Loa might be a local thing since I don't think Vodoo stuff would be as popular elsewhere in America.

Also apparently there's a lake full of Sirens near New Orleans and they're at war with the vodoo witches. Kind of feels weird for them to be in America and not the Mediterranean but they seem at least somewhat possible to negotiate with judging by how the magical girl could actually come to a talk with one. They're probably still evil monsters that literally eat men but nice to know that not all magical creatures will get in a fight with you if you make eye contact with them.

So far, the Level 3 wand and bomb look pretty good. I wasn't that impressed with the costume though. It seems to block only physical damage, and even then, the MG was avoiding some attacks. We'll have to see if the costume or the trinket is better.

Another cute setting tidbit. The fact that Sirens are... good? Is another. Or at least allied against witches.

And yeah, that was a Tier 3 Bomb I believe.
I'd call them neutral. She'd have happily killed Souvalaki if she wasn't up for bargaining just because she was there.

That particular costume only blocked the physical. Considering the variety of effects we've seen on wands and trinkets, there's no reason to think that's the only thing they'll all do. Even then, to a girl that's got built in magical and spiritual protection, such a costume would have her sitting pretty.

That's another thing I'm getting out of these side stories, that it's less about the absolute effects on a piece of gear, and more about how it interacts with abilities she already has.

A Wand or Bomb that vaporized it's target would be suboptimal for Acer, yeah. Target choice matters too. If Celeste mainly hunts demons who throw around mind control and use magical attacks, the Dress of No-Selling Physical isn't actually that helpful to her. Though presumably girls can adjust their strategies based on the gear available.

Well, with her Wand and Skill, Mistletoe is a glass cannon right now. Absolute offensive monster, little defense that we know of. Sadly, we just sold to her, so she's unlikely to be able to buy a Trinket or new Costume from us soon unless we craft Tier One, and I still dislike that idea.

Eowyn can summon a mount, and used to have a Tier 3 Wand - the loss of which is a major blow to our local girls' firepower. Presumably another Wand or a Trinket that synergizes with her mount skill would be good.

Trompdoy has asked for illusion amulets and transformation trinkets, so presumably would want either of those.

Rose... really wanted Tyrfang and I'm puzzled as to why, except that the curse part appealed to her. I assumed her fighting style as being similar to Kurama from Yu Yu Hakusho, but that doesn't really synergize with a sword at all. Maybe she doesn't use Tyrfang as a sword, or maybe she really IS Kurama, and being demonic can get a lot of use out of a cursed item.

Given what we know about our boarders - what gear synergizes with them?

You know besides having any gear.

Trompdoy's thing is illusions, and Eowyn has some sort of summon mount spell I think. Trompdoy did say she wanted a trinket a while back, while Eowyn wants a wand. I don't recall seeing much about Calypso's powers other than her being a Homunculus that accidentalied a soul. Mistletoe just got a new wand so she's probably okay for now. Her powers haven't been made explicit I don't think but it seems like her name is a reference to how the Norse god Baldr was killed by mistletoe despite being immune to everything else. So maybe something like bypassing normal resistances?

Per WoG, her Daily skill makes a target 5x vulnerable to a single attack. It's described as strong enough to destroy any target in our local area... at least it was a few weeks ago.

Oof. So yeah, a wand that can deliver a single large attack to stack with her multiplier would be ideal. That or a really big bomb. Thankfully she seems to be working with some of the other girls regularly which can help cover for her weaknesses.

Another setting tidbit. Queens make me think faeries, which we haven't seen any hints of yet.

Actually, the QM mentioned a while back that Mistletoe's main magical trick would synergize really well with a trinket, so that's something to keep in mind for later.

Oh God,I hope not! This world is already fucked up enough for MGs as is and adding the Fair Folk and their bullshit into the mix would not help in the slightest. But I don't think Queens are referring to fae and more referring to Witches as a large powerful group.

I thought so too, but given the line after about mortals, it seemed like the narrator was reassuring the audience about collateral damage.

Not quite. In New Orleans voodoo, the female spiritual leaders are referred to as Voodoo Queens, and tend to take both large and active roles in their community. I threw that in to explain there why there weren't any civilian casualties.

Oh, we have Voodoo/Vodou witches.

Evil witches they may be, but that is a horrible way to die.

When I first read this, it made it sound like she was getting some magical drugs, not a bomb.

[X]: [HEAL] With no effort or fund spared. It was your decision to save her life and keep her here, and you will see it through. (cost: 15 Witchy, 4 Demonic, 4 Holy, 1 Gubbin)

[X] [SALE] Kaguya the Lunar Rabbit (20 Mundane, 1 IOU)
When I think of Kaguya, I think of the Touhou version for some reason

Calypso is a homunculus that did a stint as a familiar. Homunculus seem to be human like things, but modified for various tasks. She's probably baseline superior to a human, but from some of the things she's said she doesn't have anything else to work with. I don't think she got much if anything from being a witches familiar. From how she put it, she did the things a familiar would normally do, but wasn't modified in any way. She probably needs gear more then the other girls, but for now that trinket seems to have her covered.

Does bring up another funny parallel with a twist to Joselyn though, or what's about to be one. She served a witch, and homunculi seem to need maintenance, so that witch might've fixed her a bit. All the [HEAL] votes need witchy material, and the top three a lot of it.
