Prologue 2: HEART Uncertainty
[x] Go back, no one saw you yet
-[x] Make a wide arc to the south in case someone comes to investigate

The cool air outside soothes your skin once you open the door; only now do you realise how disgusting the smell inside actually is.

Hungrily drinking in the fresh air, you begin to walk... but then stop for a moment and detransform, the gore that splattered over you earlier disappearing with the light. Your hair turns back from green to black and your regular clothes reappear around you.

Then you quickly get going, making a wide arc around the direct path. The risk of someone already coming from there is too high.

"Haruna?"

You look up from your bowl and towards your father when he says your name; there are bags under his eyes and he looks pretty grim there. Your mother has a more worried expression.

Wait... they did not see you, did they?

Before your pulse can rise to alarming levels however, your father diffuses the situation: "There was a commotion last night and we found traces of a Magical Girl nearby. Be careful outside and keep an eye on your friends, would you?"

Oh, so they found... that. You are not sure whether that is a good thing, but at least no one saw you. Nonetheless, you give a quick nod towards your parents and eat up, the small portion all but vanishing under your chopsticks.

Food shortages are a problem, especially because some of the women are pregnant again; surplus always goes there, so that healthy babies can be born.

"Hey, did you hear they...."
"My mom said..."
"I heard one of the soldiers talking..."

School was... weird so far. There is little else of a topic but the supposed Magical Girl hiding nearby and everyone talks about it.

You noticed how the teachers were wary around any girl they interacted with, carefully searching for unusual behaviour. Even the different groups were eyeing each other carefully the whole morning, even though no one dared to throw out an accusation just yet. If you are lucky, the search parties not finding anything will lead to people believing it was just a stray passing by.

Right now however, you can only wait and do your best trying to be inconspicuous. Which includes spending lunch with Kenji, one of your suitors. Average looks but rather smart, which is the only reason he goes to school instead of working with the adults. Most manpower is needed elsewhere, so only the girls get further education until things stabilised some more.

To be fair though, this does not really count as a school; your commune is situated in one of the suburbs of whatever city this was before and they just repurposed an old warehouse into two classrooms, where all ages are having classes together.

At least it is a warm day, so you can have lunch in the wide yard instead of having to stay inside. You carefully drink from your water and watch the other cliques sitting around on the concrete, then look back to your group.

Kenji, for his part, is an okay person; he does not look at you with obvious doubt and jokes around with you and your friends. He might marry you soon, so it makes sense for him to get along with them.

Then again, it is still about three years until you turn eighteen. You still have some time to enjoy yourself and learn a lot before having to start a family.

But why in the world were no less than three boys interested in you? There are fewer girls here so some of them obviously have several suitors, but why you of all people? You are not pretty, have no particular qualities aside from a good grasp on physics and your knack for cooking...

Maybe it is because you are not as malnourished as the rest? Being a bit chubby in your childhood, the extra pounds helped going through longer food shortages; right now you are slender, if a little too thin. Most other girls were hit worse, although they make do somehow.

Either way, staying with Kenji for the time being is the safest method you can think of. Only girls can awaken magical powers, so the boys are generally exempt from suspicion.

While class is waiting for the teacher to arrive, you idly notice the class representative missing; not that the title means much, but Kusakabe does take pride in keeping things organised. Some of the other girls are whispering about is as well.

Once the brunette arrives however, she quickly gets to the front of the room and begins writing on the blackboard. "The teachers are joining the search team, so the remaining periods are self-study for today. Take out your things and get started... and no, you can't read that manga, Takeda."

She says the last part without turning around and your classmate in the second row quickly slides the booklet back into her bag, blushing slightly at being caught. Some others snicker over the scene while you already bring out your English notes.

Learning English is more important than ever before, seeing that communicating with other nationalities became a priority these days. If there is no common language to talk to each other, there would be trouble.

This is why you spent a lot of time and effort on this particular subject; with the UES being the largest remaining center of civilisation, English would be essential later in your life, no matter what you wanted to do. In fact, going overseas might be an idea once you had two or three children... maybe even earlier, if your future husband is willing to move.

You absentmindedly tap your pencil against your chin, going over your options while marking down answers to the questions on your sheet once in a while.

The nearest other bastion of humankind is the Chinese Block, holding the remains of communist China and Russia. Your only other choice would be Australia. You definitely do not want to stay in Japan, not at home where your existence could doom your entire family; if someone finds out about you, your parents might even be accused of keeping the secret...

What if I just run away and live in the wild?
The thought presents itself just like that, making you pause in your considerations. With the magic surging through you and what survival skills you have, you could make do out there; it is worth thinking about, but... you would be terribly lonely, would you not?

Now if there were someone to run away with you...

No, not really. There is no one like that. You push off that idea and return to your work.

The hours pass by in relative silence, some quiet conversations here and there...
You almost manage to forget your situation over the work when you can feel something deep within you shudder.

"What's that?!"

Then someone gets up and points out of the window, where you can see a miasmatic cloud of red and black pulsing. It seems to turn around itself and grows more dense, more heavy... more real as you watch. The other students are looking just like you, quite a few running to the window to get a better look.

It is then that, right above a ruined building, the cloud coalesces just like the previous night. Stone is crushed as it slams into the ground, its blackish red body turning the building to dust; a pair of bony wings protrudes from its back, ridiculously small in comparison to the massive body whose back is turned towards you.

There are flames burning on those wings, and fire seems to crawl under its skin.

While the first screams of terror start, the flames weaken for a moment and lash out.

(Firestorm: +2,800 Base Damage, +656 Dice = 3,456 Total Damage
House 1: +100 Base Resilience, -50 In Bad Condition = 50 Total Damage Reduction
House 2: +100 Base Resilience, -45 In Bad Condition, -50 overgrown with plants = 5 Total Damage Reduction
House 3: +100 Base Resilience, -25 In Bad Condition = 75 Total Damage Reduction
House 4: +100 Base Resilience, -30 In Bad Condition = 70 Total Damage Reduction

3,000+ Final End Damage to each house.

House 1-4 Health: 500 - 3,000+ = -2,500)

The fire pours from every fibre of its body, lashing out at the block nearest to your school and completely annihilating it in a single blast. Sparks fly and the greenery quickly catches fire as well while the monstrosity seems to eye its handiwork.

Then it turns your way.

Those still standing in shock are shaking it off now and people start running, but you continue to stare at the monster that seemed to take its time walking over.

Only for the bellowing sound of assault rifles to fill the air.

(Soldiers 1-5, Full Auto: +150 Base Damage, +30 Full Auto, +30 Full Auto, +30 Full Auto, +30 Full Auto, +30 Full Auto, no dice = 300 Total Damage per person

Joint Damage: 300 * 5 = 1,500, x2 Synchronisation Bonus (Hail of Lead) = 3,000 Total Damage

Hell Berserker: +1000 Base Resilience, -500 Did not see it coming, no dice = 500 Total Damage Reduction

Hell Berserker Health: 16,000 - 2,500 = 13,500)

The monster roars in pain as the storm of bullets rips open its flank, tongues of fire licking out of the holes and making the air steam. It turns toward the line of soldiers that took position just a few dozen metres down the street, rifles at the ready.
Then the flames all around its form subside again.

(Firestorm: +2800 Base Damage, +537 Dice = 3,337 Total Damage

Soldiers 1-5: +50 Base Resilience, no dice = 50 Total Damage Reduction

Soldiers 1-5 Health: 150 - 3,287 = -3,137)

The flames pour down the street and incinerate their targets in an instant.

You stare in mute horror at what happened there. Those had been the only soldiers nearby, a single squad assigned to this commune to protect it from wildlife mostly... now they are dead. You can smell burning flesh and your stomach revolts.

Then there is a hand on your shoulder and someone shakes you. "Haruna, come on! We have to leave!"

The monster is still watching the second inferno it created.

With that kind of base damage it may well have been joke rolls.

Hmm. Tempted to just run away alone, here and now. I wonder what happens to any MGs that get caught. Do they get sentenced to death, or do they get forcefully enlisted with some kind of kill switch? It would be wasteful not to do the latter considering there is not much left of the military.

We won't be let anywhere near a civilization, not one with a functioning military at least, but there might be communities out there who take in magical girls. Either because they are magical girls themselves, or because whatever the past was, they can't survive without them now.

We'll have to leave, there is no place for us here. The only question is whether we reveal ourselves before we run off (most likely trying to protect our family), or leave quietly.

The rolls did serve a purpose; mainly to make sure you can make an informed decision on your course of action.

Any strong Magical Girl they catch is executed on the spot; the weak ones are captured and brought... somewhere.

So it seems we can run and deal with the guilt of possibly letting everyone in her community die, or we stay have our secret revealed and greatly risk death stopping this thing. Or try to fight it maybe lead it away and then split.

Our base resilience is 800 against that thing's 2,500 base fire damage.... so yeah fighting upfront is an out. Do you think we could lead it away at least? Maybe blind it and just keep running? Doing nothing feels like a fast track to a mentally damaged magical girl. I mean that's always going to happen but I'd like to keep that from happening as long as possible.

As for the damage, there is plenty already, since the girl is convinced she is a monster. Probably because everyone around her thinks that.

This community does not want magical girls around. It would rather kill/capture them and chance dealing with demons on its own. So why not give them what they want? Even our intervention will only be a one-time thing, after which they will be left without any protection but what the military can provide them. If those can't handle it, the people will die, and that's how they prefer it.

How it came to this is anyone's guess, but that's what we have to work with. I don't think we can do much for them, if anything. Pretty much the only question for me is whether we help our family escape, and I don't even know if revealing ourselves won't earn them more trouble.

At the very least I want to help ensure her family's survival. It's the fact that all the soldiers are dead and any help that might come won't for awhile, if we could just distract it buy some extra time for them to run.

By the way, seeing that I failed to actually mention it: there are no previous records of demon attacks on Earth ever since magic sparked in humankind, at least none that Haruna knows of.

These events are unprecedented.

...oh. That changes quite a few variables. We might have something to negotiate with, provided these events continue and we live long enough to make ourselves heard.

Wait, two three attacks in quick succession on a small community? And no one has heard of it? The way our girl casually disposed of a moster and was more worried about not being seen looked to me as if demonic incursions are Tuesdays in the setting.

Wait-wait, whom did magical girl go to war with before demons became a thing?

Edit: Still don't get it.
Still, just kicking at empty air and a few trashcans is incredibly boring; you can not even use your spell because people might notice.
This is why you are actually thrilled when you feel the building shake slightly; some sinister, blackish red cloud manifests in its center and the vibrations even go through your body.

Maybe this will be somewhat of a challenge, like those zombies you found trudging towards your commune two weeks ago.
The character expresses complete lack of surprise, only a craving for a challenge. And zombies? Is that a thing?

Why are people more worried about magical girls than wandering zombie hordes? Do they think this is also a result of magic? Why weren't there rumors of a magical girl before?

Well... Haruna not being surprised is partly me messing up and partly the surprise in the moment. She was too busy fighting to realise what was going on.
That she did not reflect on it later was my fault.

Wait-wait, whom did magical girl go to war with before demons became a thing? They got their awesome fighting powers, and they used it... for what?

Magical Girls, at least the older ones, were conscripted into the various armies from day one. They used their incredible powers to fight in World War III... and if a squadron or platoon or whatever was unlucky enough to meet one of the big players on the battlefield, they did not live for long.

Well... most people would be bored from just exercising in monotony.
As for the Zombies... well, Magical Girl Nightmare Child is well known throughout the world for her ability to summon these zombies. Some were left from her last visit to Japan and kept wandering around aimlessly.

There are no real hordes, mostly because those things can be killed by soldiers well enough and Nightmare Child has the habit to kill them after the fight is over. Sometimes she forgets, if there are only a few around.

Wow, Human Nature ended up being the exact opposite of what I though it was going to be. The other two looked like some kind of variation of 'we have magic now and everything's great...for now'. While Human Nature sounded like 'some demons attacked us and it was bad, but we fought them off. Things might not be great right now, but we know about the demons now, so when we've finished licking our wounds, we're going to fuck them up.' And boy was I wrong! Human Nature was the dystopian choice, and I had no idea! I clearly should have read deeper into the whole 'set on fire from within' thing. Did anyone else make this mistake; or am I the only idiot in the quest?

I guess I'll stick around, see if the sentiment changes. Maybe we'll wait out the storm while humanity gets demolished and be summoned to fight for it once again.

It mentions the world being set ablaze (presumably by magic, since that's what the vote was about) and the remnants of humanity sifting through the ashes. My reaction to it leading was 'why'?

Ended up a pretty cool setting, though. I kinda want to see magical girl communities trying to eke out a living in this hellhole.

Maybe I should have been more clear about it... but yes, Human Nature was named as such for a good reason.

I also forgot to mention above that part of the problem might be that I think my style tends to be... rather dispassionate; at least when I am not paying close attention to how I write things.

I thought Human Nature was a "Salt the Earth from pure spite" type of "set the world on fire" not "Humans are stupid, greedy, control-freak, dumb-asses."

I mean, MGs are only supposed to awaken in response to Demonic Incursion as far as I'm aware.

Okay, I will give a quick rundown on what the three choices were about.

Eden Awaited - Basically the same setting as Crystalwatcher's; go join the military and fight the good fight for a united Earth.

So What, It's Just Magic - Nothing changed, Earth is still splintered in countless factions that all negotiate with Unified Dark and Unified Light while Magical Girls mostly do mercenary work for either side, whomever they like more. Go to school and fight war in your free time, just like your standard MG-show.

Human Nature - Magic was used solely to bolster a nation's military power, then old grudges and the thought this may be enough for a decisive victory kicked off a war. Unified Dark had been investigating humankind by that point; both they and the Unified Light had just initiated a first contact when the war began.
Once they saw what that new race was doing to itself, both sides flipped their everything; their reaction can be summed up as follows:

:o:o:o:o:o:o NopeNopeNopeNopeNope

Even more than four years after the war ended, they do not dare initiate contact in any way; some people do have relations with the other races on both sides, but those are mostly exceptions to the rule. If you want to reach beyond Earth, you will be met with a lot of prejudices and wariness.

I mean, MGs are only supposed to awaken in response to Demonic Incursion as far as I'm aware.

I never really saw any reason that should be the case; it only takes a trigger... and in Haruna's case, this was something particularly special.

Oh, for the god's sake.

Are you really all that surprised? I mean, you live in a world derived from ye olde Europe

And you have any doubts about what human nature is capable of? The fact that humanity scewed was pretty clear from the beginning, only exact way was a question.

Okay, so maybe it's self-evident for players from crystalwatcher's quest, but what are the Unified Dark/Light?

From what I've seen of the setting, humanity was affiliated with Light, but it does not seem to be the case here, and the source of magical power does not seem to be related to them either. So I am interested about the Dark now that it isn't automatically defined as an enemy - what is it, what do they want, and how do they go about it?

Except for one, you're being a dick, and two, both my examples are very much Human Nature things, so I don't even get where the fuck you're coming from on that high-horse made of hot air.

A Might makes Right society, filtered through really alien views sometimes, and are just kind of Evil? Torture, rape, destruction of civilizations, conquering of what's left, etc.

Basically, the Unified Dark is the counterpoint to the Unified Light; a coalition of several races residing in the local dimensional cluster. No idea where the name came from, probably an image-thing... or whatever.
Either way, Unified Light is basically led by the Angels of Heaven, who are also the oldest faction there and the only one that saw the beginning of this war. There are others, but I switched out some races from the original Quest; you have to find someone in the know to get the details.

Unified Dark, on the other hand, is forming around Hell; which is basically what was just said about it. I mixed in some other races to make it less of an amalgam of evil, even though most people will not really get along with many of them anyway.
Heck, the only reason they get along with each other is because they know they would be crushed by themselves.

Basically, both sides want to win the war; Unified Light fights for freedom and peace, while Unified Dark has... many reasons. If you ever get to a point where they become actually relevant, I can give you a rundown. It goes back and forth, with new races joining once in a while and some dying out in-between.

[X] Run, trying to fight here is meaningless and futile

Fighting would be suicide and they would kill us either way. Therefore her highest chance of survival would be running away alone right now and try to leave Japan towards abother country in the future.

With the information about the both fractions, humanity would mostly land in the more evil group. But it seems that even humanity is too hardcore for them :D

PS: I think the world is nearly worst case. I did see it coming that way because of 2 reasons:
1. I know Naron and how he do such things mostly/somtimes.
2. I always think about the worst case when humanity is involved.
