Let's Play Every Final Fantasy Game In Order Of Release [Now Playing: Final Fantasy IX]

but Omicron does our main character know how to headbutt
This joke is flying over my head unfortunately, I don't get it 😔
My favorite Final Fantasy game, here at last!

I'd actually like to talk about the plethora of hidden item spots in this game, which Omicron mentioned back in the first third of the update. There are a lot of them, aren't there? Now, sure, this could simply be because the protagonist is a thief and it makes sense to have him go around pilfering. Very thematic, right?

Except this was also the game that debuted Square's "PlayOnline" service, a cutting-edge Year 2000 website that featured exclusive tips and tricks for Final Fantasy IX. (It was originally supposed to link up with FFX, like the PocketStation for FFVIII, but that never materialized.)

As intended, you'd buy an actual physical strategy guide from BradyGames, a big glossy expensive magazine with lots of art and production value that cost thirteen whole dollars (almost $25 in today's money), and your guide would include special keywords you could access on the PlayOnline website, conveniently located on the World Wide Web. Product synergy!

People hated this. Internet access was by no means universal in 2000 and lots of kids didn't even have a home computer. The iPhone was still seven years out! GameFAQs had been around since 1995 but was by no means a mainstream website.

This was especially bad because FFIX is notoriously guide-reliant. This game has so much obscure and missable content that there was a hidden sidequest that wasn't public knowledge until 2013. There's like a whole other half a game of non-mandatory stuff. Having the relevant info gated behind a physical guide and a website drove completionists insane.

Fortunately, Square learned their lesson for FFX. No, not to stop putting content behind insane obscure requirements, don't be ridiculous. They just didn't put part of the strategy guide online.

All this to say that while you definitely can play FFIX without a strategy guide, this game was consciously designed around the expectation that you'd have one, so there's really no shame in it.

Anyway, that's my historical context for FFIX. Looking forward to more of the LP!
That is kind of amazing. The 2000s were on some shit.

It's interesting, in a way - this was a time when people didn't really know what would work and become the new normal. Why not do weird, baffling paper-Internet integration? Maybe this is the way of the future!
Just telling you this right now before you get to far in the game, If you manage to impress all 100 nobles in the dueling minigame you get 10000 gil, if you also manage impress the queen as well by doing very well, when you get control of Steiner later if you go and talk to the queen she'll give you a very useful accessory that you will otherwise not access to until much later. Also if you find the 7 knights of pluto in the castle and then talk to the 8th in the tower, he will give you an elixir.

And good luck finding a face-obscuring make hat that isn't also fetish gear.

What's this, Tataru? You have a new outfit for the WoL? Which you made yourself? That's so nice! Your skills at tailoring have really improved over the course of the game. May I see it?

...

You know, Tataru, this is great, but I can't help but feel like... I don't know... This seems a little... Hm.

Can I take a closer look at the mask?

...

You know, I can't help but feel like you're working through something. Maybe projecting something onto the WoL a little? Have you been dating anyone lately? No?

Okay, well, I'm sure they'll like it. What's this? You're already working on the next set? And it will "not include pants?"

You don't say.

Saying no does let you undertake the umarked sidequest to find a little girls lost cat that involves backtracking to the gates! I think it lets you get to an otherwise blocked off room that has like, a potion or card or something?

Gah, I did find the girl's lost cast, but I totally forgot to follow up with her for some kind of reward.

Monty is inside Alexandria castle by the way, in that barracks room Zidane and Blank put the armor on in. Vivi can't get to him, it has to be Zidane (or maybe Sir Rust) that actually delivers Kupo's letter to monty, which raises several questions.

What? No, I found that moogle but his name is Mosh and he wasn't interested in any mail.

Also jeez that is a lot of missable content and hidden rewards, damn. I'm definitely feeling the "game intended to be played with a guide" vibe there. I might have to just keep an Internet walkthrough open...

It is considerably more petite than the one in Brahne's concept art (well, one of three or four pieces of concept art she has).
"How can we convey the full level of Evil Queen that Queen Brahne is operating on from just a static image?"
"I know, we'll have her roasting fairies on skewers as a snack."

Jesus.

Oh shit, that actually reminds me. @Omicron you mentioned watching the opening movie, is it ok to post the character splash screens here, at least for the cast members we've met?
Oh, yes, absolutely.

I actually went and watched that second "cinematic" (more like a slider show, they're static image) at the intro of the game now, and it's very funny that the game doesn't just include a quote by the character, but also has that character's Theme summed up in one word printed in massively large font over their head. What's this, game? Steiner's deal is DILEMMA? Thanks, I was worried I might have to figure that out from his actual in-game characterization but I'm glad we could clear that up right away.

Did you check Vivi's ticket in the Key Items menu? It is very obviously a fake to anyone who's been paying attention to the plot.

In fact, many Key Items in this game can be examined.
I did not notice that! I didn't think to check out the item menu until later, but that is funny.

The first few times, Baku will pull out a Brahne puppet instead of the Garnet puppet and say "That's right! we're kidnapping the fat-ass butt-ugly Queen Brahne - wait what am I sayin'?" (Yeahhhh...) After awhile, he'll just cut to telling Zidane to quit joking around. After 64 tries, Ruby will burst into the room to yell, and I quote, "Zidane, I reckon yer more stubborn than a grumpy mule!" You can keep repeating the question after that but it goes back to Baku telling Zidane to quit it and there's no further jokes.
I'm sorry, 64 times? Who even has time to do that even just to check it out!?

No spoilers, but Vivi and Steiner are two great characters. There's a good reason why whenever the cast of IX is brought up, "VIVI MY SWEET CHILD" and "clank clank clank CLANK CLANK CL-" are usually the first ones mentioned.

Oh yes, this is a detail that I totally forgot to mention because there was so much ground to cover, but for the sake of anyone who hasn't played the game:

When we swap character control to Steiner, his armor goes CLANK CLANK CLANK with every step.

The entire time.

It's incredibly funny.

I believe that a large part of the answer to "which of the FF's from VII to X do you like best" depends on which brunette female secondary protagonist/love interest that you vibe with the most. They all have their undeniable charms, but Garnet has got to be my favorite.

Honestly this is one of these things where having played Remake and Rebirth has just profoundly shaped my understanding of the VII cast to the point that I have to make a conscious effort to separate "Original Tifa" from "Remake/Rebirth Tifa."

I have spent at this point something like 150 hours with these characters' modern reincarnations, I would die for any one of them. Aerith/Tifa/Cloud OT3 don't @ me.

I don't entirely agree. I think they're both very similar in scope and execution. You get an in-media rez introduction involving a act of criminal skullduggery that acts as a way to introduce our core characters and get a handle on their personalities in how they get along (or don't) with eachother. It's fast paced, and you get a broad look at the cultural and technological facets of the world the characters live in along with establishing familiarity with the antagonist. Lastly, they both end with an explosion.:p

I can see the comparison but what I meant was that one of them took me like twenty minutes to play through and the other an hour and a half with triple the content to cover, making my job harder :V

I think the best endorsement I can give to FFIX so far is that this entire opening sequence puts a non-stop smile on my face from beginning to end, every single time I have played it.

It is staggeringly charming.

I will never get over the fact that it takes until the Nier: Automata raids to see two dwarves take off their helmets and reveal that not only are they completely ordinary lalafell underneath them, but the beards are fake and are part of the helmet that they remove, and they are in fact completely clean-shaven underneath. Absolutely outrageous.

Eh, he hasn't been that bad in your playthrough.
You (temporarily) missed a skip rope minigame where if you got the timing wrong, he trips over the rope. He falls backwards though, probably to spare his knees.
Oh, believe me.

I did not.

Vivi ate shit half a dozen times in a row until I was able to get up to 10 skips and then bailed out.

I am the architect of this poor child's suffering.

So, you did mention that FFIX opening stretch was longer than FFVII, and certainly more eventful than FFVIII if you count "defeating Ifrit" as the end of the opening, but was it better, from an enjoyment, story, or gameplay standpoint? Inquiring minds want to know!
I think it wins on a technicality. Like, if we compared it to the Dolet Raid, which is kinda sorta FF8's opening, then it'd be a tough call to call a winner. However FF8 does in truth start with Squall giving a tour of the school and the Fire Cave and Ifrit, which is a much more low-key introduction to the game; it's not until after that that it really wows you with what it can do.

Also, entirely for my own accounting purposes, these three updates featured a total of 149 images. Counting them now so I don't need to count them at the end, but also because it's interesting to know how the image accumulation is proceeding update-by-update. It is, right? It's not just me who find these technical details interesting?

For what it's worth, because the picture-per-post limit is 50, the way my picture picking process works is the following: I insert pictures during writing as I feel is right, then at the end of the update, I go back and count how many pictures there are. If there's under 50 (increasingly rare as things go), I just post it as is. If there's, like, 93, I make it a double update. But if there's a number that's very close to the threshold - say, 55, or 102 - then I trim pictures until I can get below the threshold.

In this case, when I was done writing the update, it had 154 pictures. I didn't want it to be a quadruple update, and it was very close to 150, so I went and found pictures to prune until I could fall below the threshold for just three posts.

Give in to your inner Moon Conspiracist, let it all out
okay fine here it is: this game is so fucking referential that I'm calling now that it's drawing on FF4 with its two moons and one of the moons is actually an alien spaceship with aliens inside, there, I said it

Honestly my first impression and assumption with Brahne was that since we're already in a fantasy world with all kinds of non-human races everywhere, she's just one of those fantasy races that happens to be queen. Idunno, part ogre or something and that's why she's big and blue.
While that's a possibility, she is also, least officially, Garnet's mother, and, uh... Garnet looks significantly less ogre-like.

That just sounds to me like it's time to figure out how to bust the game wide open with early grinding/Max MP abuse so Garnet can drop dragons on people in Disc 1.
I'm not going to do that but god the idea of casting Bahamut in Disc 1 is so funny it's almost tempting

Also, fuck it. Here's some more concept art. Out of all the "guys jumping at you and posing in a void" pieces Amano has done, this one of Tantalus is a favorite.
If nothing else, this does clarify that Baku does indeed appear to be a bat-person!

You're in for a right propa Dwarven decking is what you are Omicron. Forgetting poor sweet Giott and her maidenly heart is enough to drive her to drink!
*Shadowbringer Healer Role Quest NPC*

Anyone, joking about alcoholic Dwarf women aside, it's good to see IX started. I'll be honest, it's not my favourite game, mainly because of it being hyped up far too much that I was unable to give it a fair shake.

Hopefully Omicron enjoys it though, and perhaps the write-ups will improve my opinion of it. Certainly did with VIII.

That makes perfect sense, and in fact I already imagined that was the way you were handling things simply from going through the entire rest of the thread to count the number of pictures in each post and seeing how they were split up. Nice to have confirmation though. :)

Well, if we are going with the understanding that Alexandria is a matriarcal society with a very light prejudice towards "men are mostly buffoons" and a minor but still noticeable discrimination in favor of women, and that the rulership is passed down the female line, then it'd make perfect sense for the queen to get herself a supremely beautiful trophy husband from whom Garnet could have borrowed the looks, right? That's how things work in our society once the reversed gender dynamic is accounted for, after all.

...

I'm an idiot
Not the first time it's been brought up in the thread, but while the TRPG Exalted has had missteps in its 20-year history, the current edition is pretty good at this - the primary superpower of the world is female-biased in the way our modern world is male-biased, with the common belief being that men are too flighty to make good leaders, There are multiple important male leaders, but even they are called "House matriarchs", this being a bunch-of-great-noble-houses place, too. Having magical powers is still more important than being a man or woman, but all else being equal there's a bit of a glass ceiling.

Alexandria feels like it's trying to go for that, but the tone and the time it was made means it goes for broad comedy and some unfortunate stereotypes.
Exalted is pretty cool, and also I write for them! People should definitely check it out!

I know you've done Exalted quests on here, but you mean like no-shit writing for the company that makes Exalted? Damn, congrats.

Yes! So far the only book I've worked on to reach publication is Many-Faced Strangers, but I've additionally worked on several books currently still in development, like the Exigents Companion and the Sidereal Companion. I'm excited for people to see my work when those come out!

It's an interesting choice. I wonder if it was done in part because the team expected FF9 to be pitched to a younger audience, or for other reasons we might discuss later. For now, the opening quartet-

Evidently, someone who did it 63 times and still had some time to spare.

Nice update! Steiner is definitely my favorite character even if I've never finished the game.

Also, wow, that's a strong CRT filter on some of the screenshots. It's not difficult to read per se but it weirdly takes more mental processing than the non-CRT pictures. It's really noticable on the FMVs but it's not always bad, just weird.
The only Final Fantasys that I've played on a CRT were the SNES ones; 3D Final Fantasy have always been played on LCDs for me so it's strange seeing a shadow mask. Regardless, if you like it then keep using it.

I see you have already assimilated Alexandria's misandrist culture and just completely failed to consider her father.

Because by all appearances the man has genes that are of legendary quality.

I always just assumed Brahne took her husband's death really, really, really badly and looked a lot more like Garnet BEFORE the traditional "several gallon sized tubs of ice cream" of mourning

He already finished FFIX "Today", just sat down and cleared the entire game in 24 hours and now we get the dripfed content
It's possible. Isn't the limit for the speedrun achievement less than a day?

Lol, whenever I start a new game, the first thing I do is look up "[game] missables." Because there is nothing more annoying than getting near the end, trying to round up the sidequests, and realizing that you've locked yourself out of the ultimate weapon because of something you did or didn't do in the first hour of gameplay.

I'm a bit surprised Omicron didn't complain about the ATB system after escaping it during Tactics. Getting used to it, the game just doing a lot right with the battle system, or some other factor?
