Let's Play Every Final Fantasy Game In Order Of Release [Now Finished: Final Fantasy Tactics]

This is, without a doubt, the bloodiest Final Fantasy game to date, which is wild to me because I distinctly remember playing through FFXIV (a game of the modern era!!!) and at some point going "wow, I can't believe they got to show blood in that scene, it's understated but really effective" like a hundred hours in.

It's crazy how things change in the weirdest directions.

Knight of Rakes indeed…
I just see Wiegraf smashing Ramza all over that room, laughing and spouting lines like 'look what you have to do to imitate a fraction of my power!' 'Cute trick, it won't save you' 'So where, precisely is the power of friendship you spoke of?' 'Now and forever, I am your BETTER!' Line after line, defeat after defeat.
And after running Ramza through and extracting his sword so Ramza falls backwards down those stairs…Omi finds an answer.
And Hunh. Hester I can now probably get away with calling a Kinochi what with the Ninja/Dancer combo…
So what does that say about Gillian if she's the blue-*BANG*

The freaks have taken over.

And that's why you should become the Dark Knight.

That, too, is why you should become the Dark Knight.

[He plays the "teleport away" animation, but contextually it's implied he just vanished in some fashion.]

OK, but can you imagine if he'd actually teleported away again here?

Folmarv: "What's this? Virgo stirs."

YEEEESSSSS!

Congrats to whoever called the "Alma connects to the Virgo Stone" twist, I should have seen it coming and didn't until someone raised the possibility.

Called it.

Does that mean that Delacroix and Wiegraf were similarly connected to the Scorpio and Belias stones?

By the strings of Fate they're pulled towards their own behelits, all according to the will of God Hand.

Hopefully we're not going to be forced to kill Alma after she transforms into some kind of fucked up demon that is rapidly losing all its ethics and emotional connection to other humans. That would be… unfortunate.

I hope she will transform. I wanna see some fucked up child demon form. Maybe that haunted doll of yours as a sprite.

That said, given it was just established that auracite is not inherently demonic, I'd assume it's something else.

[She draws her sword. Barrington pulls out a gun and holds her at gunpoint.]

Oh, wow. I guess that's one method of disposing of the old grand duke. She just… threw him off the rooftop. Literally threw him. An absolute dunking.

Interesting. Tell me more about this woman and her strong grip.

On another note, I kinda wonder about the pacing. We're at the end of chapter 3 (out of 4? 5? Tactics Ogre had 4 chapters) and killed all of two Lucavi out of 12. I'm pretty sure there are not enough named characters with appropriate importance to be turned into ten demon bosses, so are we actually going to fight all of them? I guess we did take some stones out of circulation, but that in itself feels kinda weird: surely the game wouldn't end with them simply remaining unused, leaving us to wonder what kind of demon they could produce?

Then again, Tactics Ogre (or at least the remaster, I think some content was added in a later version) has placed most of its side quests in the last chapter for some bloody reason, so possibly that's where we'll meet most of Lucavi forces, with the main storyline focusing on the three established ones (Folmarv, Elmdore, possibly Alma), maybe introducing one or two more to the cast proper.

It's crazy to think about the fact that Final Fantasy as a brand was perfectly willing to show a bunch of Messily Murdered Dudes strewn about the room back in the 90s and then they just forgot how to have blood at all until 2023.

I think its more that FFVII and Tactics existed at a very unique confluence of "no longer on Nintendo, so we're only dealing with the ESRB and not Nintendo's in-house standards team" and "resolution is low enough that you can show blood and still get away with a 'Teen' rating and a tone that won't give the target audience too many nightmares". The higher the resolution, the more realistic things look, the less blood you can get away with under a Teen rating and the more unsettling things can look.

Tactics and VII illustrate this nicely. Both are given a T for Teen rating. But if you look at the relevant pages, the ESRB rating for FF7 mentions 'Blood' among its shortlist of reasons for the rating, while the Tactics shortlist just mentions violence and mild language. The sprite-based blood in Tactics wasn't worth a mention whereas the model blood in 7 was - and then as the models got better the blood vanished, presumably to keep to the 'Teen' rating under the then-three-years-old ESRB system.

I think it's the implied sexual assault angle that makes the whole thing especially gross, with Marach being outright told what Barrington did to Rapha and reacting by slapping her in the face, which is just. This is an awful, awful little man. But I guess he's good now.
Oh, there's nothing implied. "Flower" is straight up a euphamism for female virginity and Barrington says he took it - dude straight up admits to being a (possibly pedo, since we don't know the timing but it's probably not good) rapist. The game really goes out of its way to make Barrington a POS and Marach gets, deservedly, tarred by his willful ignorance.

Marach gets complicated by the fact that his ability is Untruth (compared to his sister's Truth). So it really depends on how much you want to ascribe story/mechanical overlap. Because it very much might be the case that Marach's supernatural ability, tied to lies and deception (again, literlly, untruth), warps his own perception and ability to accept hard truths like the man he saw as a savior father figure is in fact a murdering, raping monster. There's a lot of room for speculation and since he falls down the party member rabbit hole just like every other named character that's pretty much all you can do.

Woo boy, yeah. I rolled into this at level 31, and it took multiple restarts to force my way through.

For the record, my Ramza at this point was a Monk with a Ninja's Dual Wield, so he punched Wiegraf's head in for 99+99 a turn. I assume my damage as Monk Ramza has completely plateaued now, but it was nice while it lasted.

Dancer is devastating in single class challenges (either by cheating Ramza into Dancer or giving him the male exclusive job instead). Sure, it's a little underwhelming with just one, but five coin flips every turn for every enemy throws up a lot of heads.

A bit dull, though - every battle devolves to a handful of turns at the start where you disable everything followed by mopping up. Also the Lucavi destroy you.

Further thoughts on Dancer in the spoiler:

Personally, I think Dancer (and the male exclusive job) are best used as grinding implements. Just slap it on another job and have it running for a while. Since you get JP whenever the dance triggers - which for the faster dances is more often than the unit normally acts - you'll level faster and with far less thought required.

Can I just say it's a real pity the Lucavi fade back to their host body when slain? Because Belias' horns would have made a killer hunting trophy for Ramza (or a pair of very, very impressive war-horns).

I wonder how the Church is gonna blame this one on Ramza. Delacroix could be 'lone assassin killed our defenseless Cardinal' but this is a whole-ass castle complete with Grand Duke that just got blenderized, pinning that on one guy and his handful of squaddies seems like it'd be a reach.

On the other hand, if the Lucavi are moving that openly they may no longer feel the need for further discretion and are about to simply start going 'SUBMIT AND DIE' to people...

So there's a small number of ways to deal with Wiegraf's bullshit in this fight. But the first step in dealing with it is in your equipment.

For instance, I believe Rubber Boots prevent Wiegraf from relying on Hallowed Bolt and thus he switches to the less ranged Northwain's Strike. That has it's own problem with the KO chance but that can also be addressed I think by equipping a chameleon robe that prevents instant KO.

Martial Defense also can work to reduce physical damage taken and Holy Sword Moves apply.

Auto Potion is definitely serviceable here but did you know there's actually a set up in which you can kill Wiegraf (human form) here without attacking him even once? But that requires a reaction skill from a job you haven't unlocked yet.

Edit: Just got informed rubber boots wouldn't work but Chameleon Robe still works to gaslight Wiegrafs set up.

I went the "Kill Wiegraf in a Single Turn" strategy myself, though in this case, I had Ramza's Mettle online with the skill that gives him +10 damage for the rest of the battle, made sure I gave him enough mobility and survivability to kite Wiegraf for a while, and just Dragon Ball Z screamed my way up to the point where I was doing 500 damage a basic hit before turning around and trivializing the rest of the battle.

So, a few tips because the game does not signpost these for you @Omicron, and they are missable, I'm only going to mention these now so you can look at them

1) Ramza's Super Squire is now fully online and has its full toolkit as of the start of Chapter 4, except for one skill that you can only acquire by doing something Very Stupid On Purpose.

2) Your best opportunity to do something Very Stupid On Purpose will come when you attack Elmdore's pad, make sure Ramza is a Squire when this happens, and that he's immune to Instant Death and Stop for that battle. If you do that, the odds are quite high that he'll be targetted by a certain move, take that on the chin and don't die, and congratulations, you have Ramza's final Job Skill. There is absolutely no hints anywhere in game that tell you that this is a thing you can do. You'll get a second chance in the next battle after that, but it's less likely to happen, and then you more or less miss out on the chance because nobody else is likely to use That Specific Skill.

Funnily enough, just like the Iaido you like using, his final Mettle skill does, in fact, key off of Magic Damage, so it's actually something you might get to make use of!

The sad thing is that is not even a good skill, despite what it's name may make you think.

You can make it work, I've said it a few times, but that Ramza is theoretically the best offensive caster in the game between Mettle letting you boost his CT (Which lets you cast spells faster), and, well, His Final Mettle Skill, which is the highest damage spell in the game except I think the other untelegraphed spell that only a Summoner can learn by taking the hit at the very end of the Bonus Dungeon.

Man though. You're right, I just.......... do not give a single shit about Rapha and Marach? Marach is a bastard, Rapha is just There, and using one of the auricite to resurrect Marach from a Plotline Reinforced Cutscene Death Bullet To The Face is just insane. For what purpose? Especially when, once more, these two are about to have their souls sucked out and spirited away to the No Relevance Dimension while their mute flesh-puppets continue to serve in Witch-King Ramza's army of the dead.
I suppose it does at least provide the opportunity to showcase the auracite as powerful artifacts, with morals determined by the user. Which I do like, it was a little weird to have them be so straightforward in a game that's kept things up in the air as much as possible. But on the other hand, yeah, I feel little to no connection to these two characters.

There's also a point where pinning your crimes onto a relatively tiny squad of renegades stops being defamation and starts being unpaid PR work. Sure, sneaking in and offing Delacroix is heinous, but turning an entire castle garrison into mincemeat? That's impressive.

Duke Larg: hmm, so it seems your younger brother just took over a fortress and slaughtered the garrison
Dycedarg: so it seems
Duke Larg: and we're marching on Fort Besselat now
Dycedarg: wait-
Duke Larg: wasn't he a mercenary? wonder how much he charges
Dycedarg: Duke no
Duke Larg: Duke yes

But, like - yeah, keep multiple saves. It's entirely possible to softlock yourself out of the game right there and then.

[Laughs in 14 year old staring in horror at borrowed PSX realizing that she's just bricked her game and has wasted her time playing this game and deciding to play FFX instead]

ANYWAY, fuck that section

Masamune/Rain of Wisdom

Esuna: "Heavenly wind, carry us to fountain of power! Esuna!"
Reraise: "Inject life's energy! Reraise!"
Firaga/Fire 3: "Star fire, awake and deliver your judgement! Fire3!"
Hesitation/Paralyze: "Mindless, spiritless, hear the immutable beat... Paralyze!" (This is the disable spell)
Rain of Wisdom/Murasame: "No more loss of precious life! Murasame!"
Titan: "Bear down with land energy! Titan!"
Cyclops: "Scatter frozen blades of air! Clops!"
Befuddle/Loss: "Unseeing, unthinking brains... Loss!"
Petrify/Seal: "Suck away the spirits... Seal!"

her big, dramatic kanji explosion doing big visual impacts on empty tiles where they do no damage.
I haven't talked about Marach's unique skill, but it's the same deal as Rapha
And here I cry a little as Omicron fails to actually name things, as in this case there are in fact, two Dark Arts that the demons use, though going by the screen shot, it looks like it is the evil version of Holy that is being used
Unholy Darkness/Dark Holy: "Aurora, exhale bloody air! Dark Holy!"

As for Rapha's mantras, I could probably guess which one was used if you could have told me the color of the magical kanji explosions, as is, I don't know. Mind you, at least I have less to worry about with Marach, given his chants are essentially the same as Rapha's but with a single word added.

What's fun is on my most recent playthrough (using the WotL Tweaks mod, but nothing the mod does is particularly relevant) I believe I went with something like Squire with move-HP-up and martial arts (for chakra) to get through the fight, wearing maximum move equipment. Every time I was out of range, Tailwind.

There are enough ways to get through the fight - it isn't a One Strategy To Rule Them All thing - that I can kind of see how they might have overlook the sheer gruelling gauntlet in testing. Knowing it is coming makes a difference, of course.
