Lesbian and Yuri Anime/TV/Novel/General Discussion Thread

Now that we start anew, should we adopt the format like in Pink Flamingo? That way, recommendation doesn't get scattered all over the place.

Awesome. Definitely watching this thread, since I found a decent amount to read/watch from the other fanfiction thread.

Izettla the Last Witch is out on DVD/Blu-Ray from FUNimation. Absolutely GORGEOUS visuals, and terrific characters. Sadly it never goes FULLY yuri, thought the ship-teasing is intense.

Izetta was a really fun series. A unique premise, some really creative action scenes, and even if they don't kiss on-screen or anything, Izetta isn't hesitant to tell people that she loves Fine and it's thick with romantic imagery, so I consider it solidly yuri.

I couldn't really get into Izetta. :( I wanted to love it because the aesthetic of the setting was my jam but there was too much gratuitous fan service of the titular character for me to really enjoy it. Also the story was reallllly slow at the beginning.

Honestly I can deal with the fanservice, but the shipteasing was just too much for me. By episode 4 the show was just making it clear that it was absolutely not intending to commit on the matter, and given that the characters weren't capturing me and the plot was tedious, I found other things to watch.

Atomic-thin subtext.

You kinda can say the same with Princess Principal, though. :p

Fortunately, PP seems successful enough to probably get sequel in the future, where hopefully the yuri will be more explicitly shown.

As both a yuri fan and a WW2 nut, I dug Izetta until somewhere around the 10th episode when my SOD broke over the introduction of Sophia and everything afterwards. Cloning tech in the 1940s? Yeah right. I did watch it too the end but my enjoyment was shot by then.

But massively powerful telekinetic witches in what was clearly a alternate universe was not suspension of disbelief breaking?:p

I'll admit that while I like the series, I did find the clone thing a bit goofy when tech in the setting was otherwise at WWII levels. Magic is a whole different suspension of disbelief.

The important thing is that Izetta/Fine was totes canon and pretty much every character in the series could tell and was encouraging it. :D

Pretty much, yeah. Magic was presented as something that had always existed, if in relative secret, and wasn't much related to technology. Also, it plays into mythology surrounding "Nazis German technological superiority" which ranges from exaggerated to outright Nazis-worship, and I dislike those implications. I also found that the bad guys using more mundane methods to deal with Izetta given their knowledge might have made the story more interesting. For example, they could easily have just had the Germans use some pretty straightforward, if ruthless, military logic after their discoveries surrounding Izetta's geographic limitations to overcome her. Also, as a WW2 nut, I have to appreciate that an early-American entry into the war in early-1941 would not enable a D-Day by June 1941 and a Soviet pre-emptive attack on the Germans would not go nearly as well as it does but that's more quibbling at the hastily tacked on stuff at the end instead of major plot points.

And yes, I'm aware that technically their actually "Germanians", "Atlantans", and "Volgans" but... come on, they ain't fooling anyone.

How else were they meant to clone Hitler?

"Nazis dabbled in the occult" is another recurring theme of WWII-based fantasy stories. Maybe the "cloning" was just a bunch of Thule Society cultists getting together to perform some blood sacrifice ritual to raise her from the dead, a la Rasputin in Hellboy? No wonder she came back evil.

"Goddammit, Hans, you brought me the wrong blood sample again! I asked for 'Loki' not 'loli'!"
