That might not be a bad idea, yeah. We're gonna have to do a fair bit of construction in the future; our clan-castle, the city's walls, and the daimyo seat/castle for the Wave province. Having some Crab expertise on hand could be extremely useful for those.

Getting a Kaiu on loan will probably be pricey, though they are well worth the money. I don't see an issue with reaffirming our friendship with them and looking into what they need from us trade wise.

It probably depends on the exact terms. Hiring the Kaiu to (re-)build the walls/castle for us would likely be incredibly expensive, but if we "merely" get a Kaiu or two who act as advisers and supervisers for our own architects and workers, it'd probably come a fair bit cheaper, I think.

how useful would we be as acting as a trade partner? The crane are trying to starve the crab of resources (for some suicidal reason) so would we be able to act a purchasing agent? maybe something like they buy some goods from us at insane prices (giving us the money to act in there stead) then we buy a bunch of stuff they need and sell them to the crab at a loss. This would sidestep any embargos the crab are dealing with and let them buy goods without the crane screwing with them. At least until the crane catch on to what we are doing anyways.

It could work, but it'd definitely put us into the Crane's crosshairs.
On the other hand, it might also prompt the Scorpion to help us out, both to oppose one of their traditional rivals, and to build up some favors with us that they can cash in on later.

So, to summarize, for our talk with the Crab;

- reaffirm our interest in being friendly neighbors
- express interest in trade
- inquire about support in (re)building our clan castle(s)

Anything I'm missing?

Hmmm.

I was thinking "Ask if we can get a Hiruma Scout sensei to teach at our Clan dojo", then I was thinking "Damn, Tsubaki still needs a husband so we can get a Clan heir", and then it hit me! :p

a question for those who know the setting, how bad would it be to be in the cranes shit list? I know they tend to be the clan that focuses on politics more than anything else, but how much damage could they do to our economy if we annoy them?

Since we currently have quite a lot of favor with the crab, scorpion/crab balance probably suggests we should try to marry a scorpion. (Our successor should ideally marry a crab though and then carry on a tradition of each clan champion having a parent from one neighbor and spouses from the other.)

It depends, I guess. Crab husband would probably be easier to get our hands on right now, a Scorpion is going to be a bit trickier..and we left our expert in affairs of the heart and related organs at home.

Pretty badly. The Crane are *very* good at making friends, and they're also one of the foremost experts on art and whatnot in the Empire. So they could, for example, ask their courtiers to keep an eye on ours, make friends with anyone we show an economical interest in, and then convince those people to choose alternatives instead.
We also stand to gain a fair bit more income via theatre, music, dance, and whatnot, and given the Crane's aforementioned focus on art, it's quite possible for them to poison that well and make people turn their noses up at our efforts.
Lastly, they're many of the best duelists in the Empire, so it's quite possible for them to draw our courtiers and samurai into duels, which they'd then quite likely win; either leaving our courtier and their yojimbo dead (if the duel was to the death), or with damaged honor/face, and/or some other social disadvantage.

Ultimately, it's not a question of "can they hurt us?", because all of the Great Clans can do so. It's a question of "how much effort are they willing to expend on hurting us", because energy spent on opposing the Catfish is energy that's not spent on opposing the Scorpion, Crab, or Lion, for example.

Regarding asking for a Kaiu, how close are we to being able to even start work on major fortifications? I had the impression that it might be years yet before we have that kind of money. If so, maybe at this point it might be better to just ask for a few hours of time from whoever's most appropriate among the Kaiu attending the Court, to have a "we don't know enough to know what we don't know" kind of conversation.

Scorpion husband also currently has the issue of being potentially too closely related. Stick with Crab for now. We're blood relations with Scorpion already

Erm aren't the great clans in this setting really large? The chance of them not finding someone that SV will find not squicky should be practically zero. So that Tsubaki is from the Scorpion should not be a problem. But meh, a Yasuki husband would probably be just as useful as a Scorpion husband. Even then I figure our troll of an Emperor might do something for his own amusement to help again.

Not sure what else to ask of the Crab, though. Any ideas or suggestions?
Should be ok with what you brought up as a start, no need to figure everything out on the first meeting of the winter court. Tsubaki will be here for months yet.

Really large, but also a complete unknown because of uncertain parentage.

This is kind of a moderately uncommon trope in oriental tragic romance stories, so best not to tempt the spirits.

given how hard they are being resource screwed by the crane we might want to let them know whether or not we are willing to risk the ire of any of the great clans to assist them. Personally i'm of the opinion we should avoid pissing anyone off until we are at least somewhat established. Once we are established enofgh that screwing us over would take more than token effort from the cranes then we can talk about sticking our neck out for the crab. Unless that would come off as presumptuous, i'm not really sure how much of a dent in there resource crisis we could make even if we went all in.

Before y'all make up your minds on this, keep in mind that as usual I am (attempting to) write up five equally good options for marriage candidates for Tsubaki. Y'all haven't even considered the other three options I was thinking of.

VOID MARRIAGE! I have no idea what it will do, or what the long term repercussions might be, but VOID MARRIAGE! ENLIGHTENMENT SPOUSE! TRANSCENDENT HUBBY! Various other roughly thematic synonyms!

[x] For Crab
First thanking them for their hospitality.
Second talking about trade
Three how if anything we can help this winter

I remember a picture with numbers of people and population for a great clan, and their samurai numbered around 10% of the total so they had something silly like 200k samurai. It's hard to imagine the economics of supporting that many with their population base, but it is fantasy at the end of the day.

[x] Crab discussion:
- reaffirm our interest in being friendly neighbors and thank for the hospitality
- express interest in trade
- inquire about support in (re)building our clan castle(s); a sort of "first look", so we can get an estimate how expensive and time consuming it'll be and plan accordingly, and how much further support (such as some advice/assistance from Kaiu engineers in the design/construction) would cost
- inquire whether there's anything they'd need or could use our help with this winter

Somewhat rough, though I hope storybookknight will properly polish it with Rokugani etiquette and whatnot.

1. IRL was pretty close to that numbers at times.
2A. IRL though had Samurai trying to get by as much as possible which is very unlikely in Rokugan as even those options that were honorable IRL are not in Rokugan. Well, depending on Clan.
2B. They are much more involved in administration and police though.
3. On other hand there is just plain supernatural influence, including agriculture so it's much easier to have such numbers.

Hey at the very least we can go "so I know what my dad's mask looked like so make sure it's someone whose dad/grandpa's mask didn't look like that and we should be good."
