...I really wanna keep tiny sword crane. she's adorable. But I don't know how to go about it without giving the Crane some really good ammo. As for the rest...

[X] Try to steal some time to talk with Katsura, though not about anything important, just continuing to get to know our future husband better.
-[X] Chat some more with Yasuki Chie and Shosuro Miyuki. Certainly not trying to get ammunition for teasing Koibu later. Absolutely not. Okay, yes, we're totally going to tease Koibu later.

[X] Accept
-[X] "I believe that Samurai can only find their true strength when the clans work together"
basically we shame the crane courtiers by focusing on imperial unity.

@storybookknight In this vote can we only specify one person to talk to or as many as we want? (or somewhere in between? 3? 4?) And although the party itself will have drawn some attention to the fact that Maaya is a 'prodigy', did we actually succeed in our goal and bring the attention we wanted to it? Did it ever come up as a topic of conversation etc. or did it even need to? Was the party itself enough?

Also, the last update isn't thread-marked.

I'm really happy with the way this turned out. Even ignoring the damage mitigation with Maaya we have a great collection of guests here; some who might be useful next turn (Mantis, Fox for the Gold River Alliance), the heirs that Wakaba brought who are fantastic connections to have and LadiesMan!Koibu was a nice surprise!

In regards to Mayaa I think we should accept and find out if we can teach her something like singing or story telling, nothing important or necessary, but something to expand her horizons.

I think we should also try to talk to our crab friends just so we get to know them better in more relaxed conditions.

The more people you ask me to talk to, the less attention I will probably be able to pay to any of them, though giving me ideas about what to talk with them about (such as coming up with ammo for teasing Koibu) will give me more to work with. You don't yet know the results of the party, but it wouldn't have been something that you would have discussed out in the open.

I feel like a significant amount of the time spent working on this update was translating "Wooo, party time" into Rokugan Court-ese.

Honestly, most of it was spent staring at my computer and trying to work up the energy to type it out. I've had the idea for the update in my head since last weekend, just... have been having all of my energy sucked away by work.

Sorry I phrased that badly. I don't expect people to be talking about Maaya beating Tsubaki, but since she's the guest of honour I was wondering if topics of conversation that support the outcome we want had come up; best in her year, competing in competitions etc.

Obviously we don't get the results just yet but does Tsubaki feel it's gone well? In general and in regards to her goals?

I only ask because depending on how she feels it's gone it makes sense to talk to different people about different things.

Sorry to hear works getting to you. I've had a pretty harsh few weeks myself so I know the feeling.

Oh, I also phrased that badly. Yes, you made it very clear that Maaya beat you, and that she's incredibly skilled for her age. You haven't said anything about 'also I want you to gossip about it'.

In general, Tsubaki has a pretty good feeling about things.

Anyone think it be worth speaking to Wakaba's guests since they're Emerald Magistrates and there should (I assume) be a new magistrate appointed to Zakyo Toshi this coming year?

It might also be worth speaking to the Mantis Hiroji. Since he's here as Yu's guest he's likely to be one of their negotiators so we might be able to lay some groundwork for the Gold River Alliance?

All good ideas, but I feel like we should go for two, maybe three options and hit those in depth, which inevitably means some stuff has to fall by the wayside.

My personal priorities would be Maaya, the Mantis, and either the Yasuki or Shoshuro lady with Koibu, depending on whether we want some ties with the Scorpion or we want to go all in with our Crab Bros.

I'm not sure we need to include Maaya as a conversation sub-point. Accept her proposal (and make brief polite conversation) then we'll have plenty of chances to speak to her at a later time.

As for the numbers, yea I agree keep it to 3 people/groups. Right now I'm thinking Hiroji (Mantis), the Emerald magistrates as a group and one of Koibu's ladies. Or cut the Mantis and just deal with the Gold River Alliance next turn and talk to both of the ladies. That's potentially worth it since we were also looking for marriages for our subordinates this turn and this could provide more info on the two of them (if they're actually candidates).

Both of Koibu's girlfriends are single, as far as you have gathered.

As far as Koibu goes...I feel like if we push him towards one of the ladies we'll make an enemy of the other one, and from that standpoint...our relations with the Crab are strong enough that I don't think one annoyed Yasuki is really going to matter there, but an annoyed Shoshuro among the Scorpion is another matter entirely.

Well that would be a good reason to talk to them both I suppose; to gauge their interest and motivations. A brief Winter Court romance isn't that uncommon after all and if that's all that one of them are after then it'd be good to know now.

And honestly I think we need to take more into account than just 'ties' with either family. In the end the Yasuki might be the better choice and if we discover that the Shoshuro is actually not that interested but just playing along (for whatever reason) then the decision is easier to make.

Both of them and the Emerald Magistrates then.

@storybookknight I assume we've done our duty as a host and spoken at least briefly to everyone during the course of the dinner?

Yes, definitely.

So I'm thinking something something like this (below) for Maaya. The is meant to come of as 'wise older sister', although I'm not sure if maybe a different direction would be better and it should be more informal?

-[] 'I'm certainly not going to pass up the opportunity to spar with someone so talented, that that someone is Maaya-san means it will be a joy! I would be happy to help you with your Kenjutsu, and to receive some help with my Iaijutsu in return. After all, the Empire is always at its strongest when its Samurai stand together so let us stand together and teach each other what others have not.'

The message we send with this could be quite important for our future dealings with Maaya so I'd like a bit of feedback.

It's funny but because of the way her XP is spent she probably doesn't have more than 1, maybe 2 points in Kenjutsu so we probably can really help her.

*edit* Double Post Merged

Soooo.... Appropriate topics of conversation in Rokugan are hard to come by. This is what I've got so far, any suggestions?

We could add something to Miyuki regarding acting/culture and suggestions for our new troupe but if she is actually properly interested in Koibu and we go for another option it could be awkward in the future. Thoughts?

As a side note the Shosuro govern the land on the East coast of the River of Gold north of Kyuden Bayushi pretty much all the way up to the Spine of the World Mountains. This isn't really the place to discuss business but they'll be someone we eventually want to talk to about trade going furthern North.

I haven't got any objections to @HastyGaming's specifics on the write-ins, nor necessarily to adding the Magistrates, but I'd still prioritize getting some more interaction with Katsura over chatting with the Magistrates if three major interactions (Katsura, Koibu's harem, and the Magistrates) is too much.

I suppose there'd be nothing wrong with including Katsura as well. Since it's just small talk we don't need many details and SBK can just gloss over it if he wants.

This might be taken as a declaration of ambitious intent? It's also somewhat competitive sounding to me. I'm not that familiar with Rokugan, so I don't know how often a Minor Clan hosts Winter Court. Is something like that noteworthy?

Ah, the intent isn't to Host Winter Court, that's way beyond our current ability. It's just meant to be a statement that we hope to host the Yasuki at Zakyo Toshi in the future and show them the same level of hospitality.

It's just that "the same level of hospitality" might be taken that way as it stands. It's how I read it, anyway. I'm not a Rokugani courtier, after all, but it does seem like an opening, even if it's not meant so.

Instead of checking out Koibu's suitors, shouldn't we try mingling with the Mantis and Kitsune? Koibu is a big boy and can handle himself after all. Then again, I'm not sure how important they are, so maybe it doesn't really matter.
