Kantai Collection - Fanfic Idea and Recs

I decided to redo the list of Fletcher-class destroyers to update it so the names could incorporate (especially for those who were transferred to Spain and Latin America) the honorific names used in both Spanish and Portuguese naming conventions. I also listed which of these girls has a version appearing in KanColle (including Pacific), Azur Lane or Warship Girls; for those who have multiple versions, I made a choice as to which other destroyer would be "personified").

For everyone's information, I also include the final fate of said ship; this, I believe, would influence how said destroyer would come back as a shipgirl.

Enjoy!

Note: Entries are read as "Hull Number/Ship Name — Human Name (Fate)". I broke the list down into manageable sections so people don't see a massive wall of text.

Just finished the class that preceded the Fletchers, the Gleaves-class destroyers.

This, IMO, would be the tragic class of American DDs. So many of them, who were built at the most two years before Fletcher and her sisters hit the ways...and because they were still under the various treaty restrictions, they're about 75% of the size of the newer design. Because of that, IMO, most of them wound up scrapped within a decade of the end of World War Two. Of the class, only eleven were exported to other nations as noted below; look at what happened to Hunter Rodman as I note below if you want to get something of a laugh here.

Even "better", neither KanColle, Azur Lane or Warship Girls have any of these ladies as playable characters.

I'd see them as potential recruits for Abyssals.

Sad...

Anyhow, you all know the drill. While not as numerous as Freddi Fletcher's siblings, I'm breaking down the list for ease of reading.

With a Metal Slug crossover the biggest question is "What are the Mars People going to think about this" as those aliens just keep visiting if only to take vacations now.

Still I'm not sure if the Abyssals could keep Allen O'Neil down even if they tried. That man simply refuses to die

Now doing the group before the Gleaves-class, the Benson-class destroyers. This group fared just as badly in their own way as their successor class did; thanks to the leap in size between the Gleaves and the Fletchers, all treaty-bound destroyers were effectively rendered as either radar pickets or seen as useless in the early years of the Cold War. Fortunately, Azur Lane and Warship Girls took interest in this class as note the presence of Eleanor Laffey as playable characters in both games; since I like the AL designs much better, Eleanor would resemble that version of her in my stories while Vanna Lansdale would take after her sister's WG self.

You all know the drill. Enjoy!

Anyhow, all the interwar destroyers that preceded the Benson-class will be listed here. Since they normally averaged about ten ships a class, I'll spoiler each class for ease of reading.

And while Azur Lane, Pacific and Warship Girls did take interest in some of these particular destroyers, their usual fate was to only be in commission for at MOST a decade before being scrapped or, as a friend advised on this same chat at SpaceBattles, used in Crossroads. I'm interested in them as I'm using some of the Crossroad characters in my latest story.

You all know the drill...

Anyhow, here's a list of all of America's capital ships (BBs, CCs and CBs alike), which includes one that should immediately go to the Philippines, plus counts two that were never built but could be given "life" thanks very much to World of Warships and Azur Lane.

Note that I did some renaming here to prevent the confusion of dual names for several vessels, where one ship was cancelled (due to the Washington Treaty) only to see the name revived in future construction. As I've done before, I've also indicated who IMO would make the best resemblance to any of these girls when called; when multiple versions appeared, I shifted the versions around to get more capital ships covered. Even with that, I didn't get them all, of course.

As always, the text is spoilered for reading convenience.

Enjoy!

I'm Back with more Metal Slug Naval Ships.

In Metal Slug 2/X, you fight against the Covert Operations Submarine "Hozmi":
Quote from the Metal Slug Wiki:
War is always a dirty business, but who would have ever thought you would find yourself in a naval battle while in a sewer?

The Hozmi is a nuclear-powered submarine, designed for naval battles. It is equipped with a powerful electric cannons with long range. It is unknown since when they were able to create such weapons, but since in this game they have relations with the Martians, it is possible that the Hozmi could be constructed with alien technology. In fact Martians can be found in small booths overlooking the construction of other Hozmi-class vessels. There's also a super Hozmi. A variant which has flame throwers mounted on the bow and 2 Di-Cokka turrets are mounted behind the electric sphere.

Regardless of its origins, it's still no match for good old fashioned Peregrine Falcon violence. After the ship is destroyed, the crew will escape from submarine by jumping into the sewage water, adding insult to injury.

In Metal Slug 4, you fight against Amadeus Syndicate Submarine "Sea Satan": ...This is a Japanese game. Trivia: The Sea Satan's Concept art depicts that the Submarine is a Giant Submarine but in the game, the upper part of the Sea Satan can be seen. This is due to size related issues.

Weapons: Missile launcher, Gatling gun, Rocket, troops release
In Metal Slug 5, you fight against the Ptolemaic Amphibious Assault Landing Ship: Unit #02 Sandmarine: Designed to travel under the ground.

Weapons: Fireballs, cannon, energy shots, rocket launcher

In Metal Slug 3D, you fight against Morden's Battleship:
Quote from the Wiki:
Morden's Battleship is a boss from Metal Slug 3D. It appears as the 6th mission boss and is the second boss in the game overall (unless counting the missions 3 and 5 mini-bosses).

It looks similar to Big Shiee in terms of appearance and strength, but it's stronger, has more weapons and a giant frontal mini-gun instead of a battery cannon.

It also can be used on both sand and water, and can stay under the sand similarly to the Sandmarine.

Anyhow, here is the rather LARGE list of pre-war British destroyers. I had an incomplete list on my computer, so I just had to fill in the blanks.

And do something that gave me a headache...!

Literally RATIONALIZE the whole damned PENNANT NUMBER system!

Unlike the American approach, which assigns specific hull classification codes to each ship to identify class and only allows ONE number to be used in each class list, the British system allows the repeated use of the same numbers in case war losses occurred. Even more, ships could have multiple pendant numbers in their service lifetime depending on how they're being used.

In other words, not fun at all.

But I think I got it ordered well.

Anyhow, this covers up to the K-class ships that were coming on line when the war started. I'll do another list concerning war-built ships and the Town-class lent over by the Americans.

Enjoy!

Anyhow, here's the list of wartime destroyers serving in the United Kingdom, including ships of the Royal Australian Navy and Royal Canadian Navy. This list also indicates those ships that were dispatched to those exiled Allied navies during the war as well as to where ships were sold off to post-war.

Please note (since this started a bit of an argument on SpaceBattles with the previous list) that some of the ship prefixes and type prefixes here are of my own creation. In the universe of my stories, all navies make use of such ship/type prefixes, even those who never used same in real life.

Also, such prefixes are typically written in the official operating language of said navy; this is the reason that India and Pakistan use English-language terms. As for the Oriental language terms I introduced before, I know I dropped connecting particles, but this reflects the classical forms of writing in Mandarin, Korean and Japanese. Thus, when I wanted to translate the term "Warship of His Imperial Majesty the Heavenly Sovereign" to serve as the official Imperial Japanese Navy/Army warship prefix, I came out with 天皇陛下軍艦 (Tennō Heika Gunkan, shortformed THG in Latin script) even if it should properly read 天皇陛下の軍艦 (Tennō Heika no Gunkan). The same is true for Korea, where I use 대한민국군함 (Taehan Minguk Kumham, shortformed TMK in Latin script and literally meaning "Warship of the Republic of Korea"); in this case, the proper translation would read 대한민국의 군함 (Taehan Mingug-ŭi Kumhan). Note that I do not care at all for the "revised romanization" that came out in 2002 in South Korea; IMO, it does NOT properly display how sounds are made in han'gŭl. Fortunately, the issue with such conjoining words doesn't really show up in Mandarin, so I came up with 中華民國戰艦 (Zhōnghuá Mínguó Zhànjiàn, shortformed ZMZ in Latin script and literally meaning "Warship of the Republic of China"); yes, I know "戰艦" normally translates as "battleship", but I use the core meaning of the first character, which means "war".

Anyhow, you know the drill...

Stepping down a grade from destroyers, here's the list of pre-war design British frigates.

Now, a couple explanations, first...

The term "frigate" itself didn't come back into use with the Royal Navy until well AFTER the Second World War began. What was used instead were a small hodgepodge of names, primarily among them being "sloop". These ships were generally slow but heavily armed ships for their size that were normally either dispatched to distant patrol stations or wound up being designed for escort duty. Since the last class of "sloops", the Black Swans, were reclassified as frigates post war, they wound up on this list. Also on this list are the Hunt-class, which were purpose-designed escort destroyers (similar to the American destroyer escort concept such as USS Samuel B. Roberts of Leyte Gulf fame). Thus, the list below combines that of the Hunt-class DEs and the various sloop classes. The wartime list will include the American-built destroyer escorts given to Britain as well as the purpose-built frigates such as the River-class.

Secondly, you'll notice that those ships who would eventually wind up in the postwar West German Navy got noble titles attached to them. This is a nod to the fact that most large German ships from both the Kaiserliche Marine and the Kriegsmarine were named after old nobility. Thus, when the frigates listed below were effectively adopted by the modern Deutsche Marine, they would gain as part of their names the noble title of their namesake as well as the term "freidame" (literally "free lady"); this is the term I invented to represent the female version of a ritter (knight) that is normally used in the magical realms (and a nod to Harry Leferts' Harry Potter and the Shipgirls collection which inspired my story The Seventh Shipgirl). In the universe of my stories, a freidame is ranked below a freifrau/freiin (the wife/daughter/other unmarried female relative of a freiherr [free lord, AKA baron]) and the title is used among German magicals.

Finally, among the modified Black Swan-class sloops/frigates, I note those who were cancelled before commissioning as having been adopted by the Royal Canadian Navy. This is because the planned HMS Nonsuch shares the same name with the RCN "stone frigate" of the same name located in Edmonton (the capital of Alberta). Thus, when the spirits of Nonsuch and her incomplete sisters were summoned, they were adopted by the Royal Canadian Navy's reserve wing and renamed.

You all know the drill...

Now moving to the first of the wartime frigate classes, the River-class. This list is divided into three parts:

1) The British-built River-class ships (ship prefix HMS unless noted);
2) The Canadian-built River-class ships (ship prefix HMCS unless noted); and
3) The Australian-built River-class ships (ship prefix HMAS unless noted).

Two of the Canadian-build ships that were cancelled before they were built are renamed in this list. The River-class HMCS Merrittonia is renamed Welland (after my hometown) for the simple reason that there was already a Flower-class corvette with that name (named in honour of the old town of Merriton now in Saint Catharines) already in service. The actual first River-class Sussexvale is renamed Quispamsis due to there being a latter ship with that name that was commissioned; the first ship is named in honour of the largest town in Kings County (New Brunswick) where Sussex (in whose honour Sussexvale was named) is located.

You all know the drill...

Random thoughts of a crossover with Fairly Oddparents:
Crocker would piss off every Navy because FAIRIES!
Doug Dimmadome, Owner of the Dimmsdale Dimmadome would have his own private Dimma-Fleet
Jorgen Von Strangle (and his muscles) would be very annoyed at the puny little creatures who claim to be fairies. They are even smaller and punier than the smallest and puniest fairy in Fairy World.
Timmy Turner used the last wish he was capable of to help him get into the Navy, miraculously becoming an Admiral all on his own.

I haven't watched that show in years, but the first thing that comes to mind after reading that is that said final wish might protect him from being mindwiped, due to fairies now being part of his job.

Now the second group of wartime frigates for the Royal Navy, the Loch-class.

This particular class is a bit complex since it actually grew into FIVE separate classes of warship based on the same hull type. Designed originally as the penultimate anti-submarine warfare frigate, with all the experiences gained in the Battle of the Atlantic poured into them, the Loch-class were effectively near-equals of the American John C. Butler-class destroyer escorts that were being produced at the same time. Along the way, the shifting demands of war would see a considerable number of ships converted into what became known as the Bay-class, with greater emphasis on an air defence rôle. With them came the three sub-classes marked separately here: A pair of "dispatch ships" which were effective yachts for regional fleet commanders, four dedicated survey frigates and two coastal force depot ships. But when you get to the nitty-gritty of the situation, these are all Loch-class vessels as note the fact that all of them were given "Loch" names before those who would become the Bay-class and the three specialist classes were renamed...and with the specialist classes, they got TWO different names.

Thus, this list is based on the original "Loch" names regardless of class. What the members of the Bay-class and the specialist classes of ships would be renamed is in the notes, plus any dispositions for ships given to other nations. With all the ships that were cancelled before construction - since I couldn't base their human names on their first captains as is my want when it comes to most British Commonwealth vessels, I had to get creative. For many of them, I picked as their family name of the clan who owned the territory where said loch was located. However, if I couldn't find said loch, I often chose a particular clan name. It seemed to work out well...

...until I encountered the would-be HMS Loch Lurgain.

Whose ship name is one of the names for Galway Bay on the Atlantic coast of Ireland!

And well I'm more than sure that there is a loch in Scotland with the name "Lurgain" that was the intended namesake of this particular frigate, I thought that it wouldn't be fair for the Emerald Isle to not have some dedicated shipgirls who were more than just corvettes or OPVs in their first life, so I allowed eight of the Loch-class girls to be "adopted" by the an tSeirbhís Chabhlaigh. For the human names, I tried a blend of traditional Irish Gaelic and modern English-influence names, but I'm rather sure I messed up somewhere, so if people do notice mistakes, please tell me and I'll be happy to fix the list up.

You all know the drill.

Finally, we come to the Captain-class and Colony-class frigates of the Royal Navy, all of which were constructed in the United States and allowed to serve under British command and control through Lend-Lease; the vast majority of these would be returned to America to be decommissioned and scrapped.

For the Captain-class frigates, I decided to fall back on my standard when it comes to American destroyers - selecting human names based on the person the ship is named after - and using that as the basis for the shipgirl's human name. When there had been an original American name allotted to these ships, the shipgirl would get two family names, her British namesake first and the American namesake second (which somewhat I did before with the Town-class destroyers). Excepted to the rule are the incomplete Evarts-class destroyer escorts listed here; upon their return, they were adopted by the Royal Canadian Naval Reserve and took up the names of several of the "stone frigate" shore bases across the Dominion.

As for the Colony-class, since a vast majority of them are now independent nations or part of other nations, it only made sense to me that if they were ever summoned to fight as shipgirls, they would be "commissioned" in the navy or coast guard service of that nation and not either the UK or US. Those shipgirls' names were adjusted accordingly.

You all know the drill...

Going back across the pond to the United States, it's time to look at the follow-on series of destroyers to the Fletcher-class, the Allan M. Sumner-class ships. Now, this is one list actually composing two distinct classes as twelve of this class were converted to minelaying destroyers (hull classification code DM). Said ships are ordered in this list per their original hull numbers; once they were designated as minelayers, their hull numbers were changed (the numbers being listed here as well).

You all know the drill...

Since I had the names for all of America's aircraft carriers already drawn up, I might as well share them with everyone else.

Note that with the names I marked with (*), the ship name is my creation. You might say I got a little inspired when it came to the names of the cancelled Essex-class carriers.

You all know the drill...

It's "Buque" not "Barco".
At least do some basic research. Spanish is not nearly exotic enough to make such mistakes.

War Is a Racket

(Kaiserreich x Kancolle)

When the news came that she was finally to be struck from the naval register, all she could feel was… relief. She knew that for those ships who were only finished near the end or after the war, they were still raring to fight, to prove their worth in protecting America. But for herself, who had been there since the war started, she was just tired. No amount of repairs or refits could fix the various little scars and aches or renew her aging and overused internals, and that was just the physical injuries.

She had seen too many of her old comrades who had went into the war with her not even make it out of the first year, and everyone else revered her so much that it was impossible to connect as equals. But, on a more positive train of thought, with her gone she would no longer be that figure on the pedestal whose shadow shrouded the deeds of the new ships, though she certainly pitied whichever carrier was to inevitably inherit her name.

As her internals shuddered to a halt for the last time, she wondered if maybe she could see her comrades again. It was a foolish thought, especially for a warship, but… it would be nice to be with them, to tell them their sacrifice for peace was not in vain. And with that final wish she drifted off to…

--------------------

"What the hell."

Those were the very first words out of her mouth as she looked down with her very own eyes at her very human looking body. And yet it certainly wasn't human as she could still feel all her internals, her now full sized crew, and all one hundred planes resting in her hanger. It was as if she was back in 1940, having launched on her maiden voyage.

Besides, she was pretty sure humans couldn't stand? Float? Well, do whatever it was she was currently doing on the water that was both far too calm to be the Atlantic she had previously been in, and was so shallow that if she had still been a full-blown steel hull she would have almost certainly grounded. The reason for it being so shallow was the seemingly lived on island that she had just now spotted with her Mk 1 Eyeball, though she doubted that if she was truly human her vision would have been so eagle eyed as it was now. Perhaps her friends were there? If she had been in any other situation she would not be nearly so optimistic but…

She stared at the sandy beach in trepidation, listening to the faint whirring sound of the very small fighters flying BARCAP above her head. The hope of seeing her fellows had already been dashed before she had reached the island, which was an atoll based on the reports from her pilots who buzzed the outskirts and own observations. It seemed to have been some sort of garrison and air field before some sort of fighting had occurred. Perhaps it was some old American garrison, but it was over twenty years later so she would have thought it would have been reclaimed.

No, the real source for having been nervously sticking just off the beach was that floating in shallow water was one thing, but even with her new human body she was nervous at going onto dry land. She was an ocean going fleet carrier after all, not some amphibious lander. Still, she couldn't just float aimlessly like a moron forever and she took a cautious step and… her boot firmly stood on the wet sand like she was a normal human being. She laughed (another first!) at her own nervousness, oh what would all those who looked up to her like some sort of unsinkable deity have thought of her being scared of a bit of sand!

After a bit of exploration, any sort of levity she may have had was removed as she looked through the shelled out buildings and blasted pathways. What little signs that remained were in English but the few long dead husks of jets that had seemingly been caught in their hanger by whatever surprise attack were far different looking than the ones even she had received at the end of her long life. Had the Japanese finally decided to go from simple saber rattling to all out war?

However, as she emerged from what she had guessed were previously barracks, any thoughts of her simply having woken up in the future with some sort of Japanese surprise attack having occurred halted as she looked at the flagpole, more specifically, what was being flown from it.

Flying tattered, yet still proudly in the wind was not the Grain and Gears she had proudly flown herself, but the old Federalist Stars and Stripes with fifty stars emblazoned onto it. For the USSS Smedley Butler, former flagship of the Union of Socialist American State's Red Navy, and now newly resurrected shipgirl, things had gotten a whole lot more confusing.

Cross Posted from SB

So one of the things I really liked about Crossover fics such as the one where Kestrel from Ace Combat comes to Kancolle land was the sheer culture shock between both crosses yet an often problem between the two is that the crosses tend to be very unbalancing for the whole WW2 setting, which is why I scrapped ideas for a Warship Gunner Cross Over and then at some point playing HOI I realized Kaiserreich would make a great cross setting with Kancolle as they are both WW2 with KR being hilariously different from OTL. My two ideas were either a cross where Prinz Eugen lands into KR Germany after she gets hit with the nuke from Crossroads, or have a ship from a Totalist CSA land in OTL as Totalist CSA is the most radically different ending for America (that isn't Pelley Land which is dumb and would not result in an interesting character due to multiple reasons). I decided to do the latter idea as while both are peak culture shock, it requires a lot less worldbuilding on my part and being able to rely on actual Kancolle characters.

In light of Azur Lane getting Formidable soon, an old film of her self-launching. Wonder how that's going to be reflected in her skills, if at all?

Are there any Percy Jackson Kancolle crossovers? I find it an amusing idea that the Abyssals might worship Percy a son of the sea god.

If anything the Abyssals would far more likely worship Oceanus and viewing themselves as the Oceanids, that or believe themselves the daughters of Polybotes the Gigantes opposite of Poseidon and that being the reason why they are meant to destroy humanity.

Arrgh now this is going to to bother me but apparently the Greeks already came up with the idea of the spirit of sunken ships turning into ghostly maidens but I can neither remember the name for them or find it on google.
