1.6 - High-Speed Stabbing
[X] Offer your hand to the Emperor. (You will follow Penguin Logistics and continue Code of Brawl. Emperor will like you considerably more.)

1.6 - High-Speed Stabbing

Now that you think about it, maybe the hospital isn't that good of an option. You have no documentation here, and you're not sure if they'll even be able to treat you. Perhaps this Sora girl is a better option. So, you reach out with your hand.

You and the Emperor shake hands… flippers, in his case? Then he points towards the back of the vehicle. "Let's go, boyo. We got to go get my revenge!"

Right now, you're reminded of the Case of the Left Finger. Once again, you're doing a job for someone that's very… eccentric. That's not bad, actually. You like eccentric people. If you didn't, you wouldn't be leading Turbulence Office. You're glad they're not the Index this time, at least. Working for the Index is never a good experience. Leaves you with this sort of... feeling of existential strangeness. Like you're being watched. Oh well. Time to go.

"I- I don't know if this is a good idea." says Bison.

No, you are pretty sure this is an excellent idea. Car chases are always great. As the car comes to life, and the six of you dart towards the Syndicate goons, you let out a chuckle. Even though your stomach may be holding more blood then gastric fluid right now, the situation is pretty good. You've been promised healing, and you're in a high-speed car chase. This is probably the least exertive situation you'll be for the rest of the night. All you need to do is deflect a bullet or two and Penguin Logistics will be fine.

You breathe deeply, as you get closer and closer to the escaping Syndicate members.

"Do any of you have a sword, here? I think I'll need it. " you ask.

"Of course we have a sword! Texas, get' em one! And Exusiai, pass me my Lil' Homie." says Emperor.

Texas, one hand still in the steering wheel, slightly unsheathes her blade. It shines for a brief second, and then another blade falls from the sky, right next to you. You grab it by the hilt before it can pierce through the truck. It's a saber, and doesn't really look like a very good blade, but it'll do for now. Exusiai reveals a... you think that's a semiautomatic pistol? There is something strange about the way it looks.

When Emperor fires his gun, there is no muzzle flash. In fact, there is no light and no noise at all. A rubber projectile flies out of the pistol towards the Syndicate vehicle, and nails one of their windows. It shatters ...wait, that bullet wasn't nearly as fast as a regular bullet should be. You take a better look at Lil' Homie, and now that you do so, you start to notice something...

"Is that cardboard?" you ask him. "That's a clever way of getting around the regulations."

Exusiai's eyes shine with excitement. You know that look. It's the same kind of look Emil gets when he's talking about the brand-new gun he got from a new Workshop. It's the kind of look he had when he explained how his Anti-Blue Ammunition- which he apparently bought specifically to get around the Blue Reverberation's bullet-deflecting skills- worked. No one did really get it, but it was nice to see him so excited talking about his interests.

"You're kind of a team mom, aren't you, Sieg?"

You blush behind your conical hat. Thankfully, it obscures your face, so no one saw you do so.

"It is made of cardboard, yes! Made out of forty-two layers of high-grade cardboard, glued with the best industrial adhesive in the market, and powered by the finest rubber bands that money can buy! It's an absolute masterpiece!" says the angel. She'd have continued, if one of the mooks hadn't tried to shoot her mid-speech. Your arm blurs, and you deflect the bullet before it even reaches the vehicle.

"A slingshot weapon? What's the maximum velocity?" you might commission one of these, then. If it can afford such power... these finest rubber bands might be more expensive then bullets, though. But it would possess the advantage of silence. Silencing guns is a big no-no for the Head, but slingshots are perfectly legal... this would work on assassination missions, specially if you replace the rubber projectile with something to deliver toxins or poisons.

"Around 76 meters per second in average, but Lil' Homie has reached projectile speeds of-"

"Texas, drive closer! Let mister merc here hit 'em with his sword." interrupts Emperor. "We're going for the confrontation! After it, Exu! Blow their tires!"

"Blow their tires with rubber bullets?" asks Bison.

"You can't use live ammo in downtown Lungmen. That's the law." says the rapper penguin. "But the king has spoken- let his will be done."

You grin. That's quite an impact her gun can muster. As Texas accelerates and you moves to the side of the Syndicate's car, you hold onto your sword.

And then, you cut.

The strike shears off half the vehicle's roof. The blade shatters into pieces right as it slices through the metal. Your enemies are now completely exposed- and Exusiai taxes advantage of that almost immediately, nailing them with precise headshots. Texas starts to drive away right as the vehicle spins out of control. If this continues, it'll crash headfirst into the railings. The two Syndicate goons will be turned to paste, and well, you can't interrogate paste. So you jump headfirst into their car.

At the moment, both of your vehicles are crossing an overpass above some particularly busy-looking streets. There's not that many people here in comparison to the average Nest. The risk of widespread civilian and property damage is minimal. Fuck it, you're going to get healed by this Sora girl anyway. Time to go a little fast. Your bandages will probably need to be replaced after this, but...

"...It's not like you care." says the Voice, perfectly echoing your current thoughts. She sounds smug, for some reason. Like she'll use this information later. You're not worried.

The world slows down. Lech could do better- he has time manipulation to rely on instead of pure speed. So you need to do this quickly. You grab the first Syndicate member- the driver- by the neck, and toss him off the car, right into Crossiant's arms. You do the same to the second in the backseat. There, done.

The world returns to its normal pace right as you leap back into the car. All the girls see is your form blurring as two goonies appear right inside the truck's back. Bison nearly falls flat. All the girls and the penguin do is slightly raise their eyebrows. The Syndicate's car slams into the railings with a loud crunching sound. If there were people inside, they'd have either died instantly or get thrown off the overpass. Good for them, you guess. They were very lucky that you are in a good mood right now.

"Well-" you say, as the car decelerates, with Texas trying to stop it close to the wreckage- "Who's in the mood for some interrogating?"

You don't think that someone with a beak can muster a grin, but Emperor's body language conveys a wide smile anyways.

From a long distance away, everyone can see that there's an absolute clusterfuck happening at the overpass. And, what do these Lungmen citizens, witnessing the crash, think? They have been hardened by the exposure to the underworld activities that permeate the city. They are fully aware of their consequences. So, what is the first thing they decide to do?

"Woah! What's happening up on the overpass? A car crash?"

"Doesn't seem like a regular crash. Let's go check it out."

"Another street fight? Count me in!"

Lungmenites have a reputation for having an abnormally high tolerance for insanity. You can't live in this city and not have it. What, roughly a year ago, Wei Yenwu tried to orchestrate the genocide of the Infected population in the city, and the average Lungmen citizen doesn't think any worse of him for it.

Well, that might be blamed on the virulent hatred many Terran people have for the Infected. But the fact remains that Lungmenites have a high tolerance for weirdness, and when confronted with a bizarre situation, their first instinct is apparently "hey, let's see where this goes!"

At this moment, there is another person who is looking. She recognizes the situation immediately. She has just purchased quite a few finballs, and they are quite tasty. (To those who don't know it, finballs are fishballs, but not fish balls because this is an alternate reality can you can't use the word fish.) She was looking forward to just wandering around, finding stuff to eat on the stalls that dominate this city on the Sauin holiday. Seems that's no longer possible.

"Oh... so soon?" says the Fallen Sankta known as Mostima. "Looks like I'm on the clock already."

"Hey, hat guy, gimme five!" laughs Exusiai. You give her a high-five.

Crossiant is staring at the wreckage and at the two Syndicate goons you snatched up. "Pardner, I ain't going to complain' about you helpin' us." she has a concerned look in her eyes. "But weren'tcha cut up real bad? Bleeding all over the baws' couch and all?"

You are, in fact, cut up really bad. The internal bleeding has worsened. But you're not all to concerned about it. They did see how extensive your wounds were, and if this Sora can heal you from that state it can heal from this one. Besides, you've toughened out way worse stuff. Through your carrier, you were cut, stabbed, hit with electrical blasts, had your arms submerged in acid acid, set on fire, carved up with a spoon and drowned in blood, choked, poisoned, hit with blunt weapons and at least a dozen different Singularities, and even tossed off a cliff once.

You'll bounce back, you're sure of it.

"I'll be fine. Been through worse through my career." you answer. "Well, I suppose it's time for the interrogation, right?"

The Emperor has a cigar in hand. You don't know where he got those. Maybe there were some in the car? Yeah, probably. For some reason, Emperor just makes you tense, and one rule of being a Fixer is that, if your instincts warn you about someone, you take them seriously.

"Yeah. Don't get me wrong, I still want my revenge for my records, and little man, I'm going to get it. But that can wait now. We gotta shake down these two for-" says Emperor. He doesn't have time to complete the scene.

You hear the sound- a gun firing. Not a rubber bullet- a real one. Aimed towards... the car? No. The fuel tank. You cannot allow it. You broke your new sword later when assaulting the vehicle. It was apparently some sort of disposable Singularity weapon, which Texas can create at will. You're not sure if you can deflect another one with the remains of it, but you'll try anyway. You toss the broken weapon directly into the bullet's path. It ricochets off the low-quality metal... is it even metal? And then hits the floor of the overpass.

A sniper? Nothing's stopping him from firing again.

"Texas, I need another sword." she nods, and another sword falls from the sky right into your hand. "Sniper over there. Take cover."

You take a look at the direction the sniper came from. Even your augmented eyes cannot pinpoint anything there. Whoever made the shot, they've already fled.

"A sniper." mutters Bison. "Dammit."

"Well, we gotta get somethin' out of these guys now, baws. What do we do?" says Crossiant, pointing at the unconscious mafiosos.

Emperor stops smoking for a second, and looks at Texas. "What'ja got, Texas?"

The wolf-haired girl takes a cigar from a pack- no, that's a stick of chocolate, you just got it wrong.

"I think we should take them back to the bar. We'll be safer there, and we can rough them up without any risk of permanent damage, not with Sora there. We'd be safer."

The penguin looks at you. He wants your opinion, too?

[ ] Agree with Texas. (You will take them to Emperor's bar, the Ends of the Earth. Well, it's not really Emperor's bar, but still. You'll get a more complete source of information that way. You might be vulnerable to attacks on the path there.)
[ ] Disagree with Texas. (You will try to wake them up right now and "ask" for info. They'll be in a worse condition to answer, but you'll get your info right here, right now. Penguin Logistics will go along, but they'll like you less.)

[ ] Write-in. (Present another option that Sieghart could propose to Penguin Logistics.)

1.7 - Command Terminal
[x] Agree with Texas. (You will take them to Emperor's bar, the Ends of the Earth. Well, it's not really Emperor's bar, but still. You'll get a more complete source of information that way. You might be vulnerable to attacks on the path there.)

1.7 - Command Terminal

With a sniper harassing your allies, and the possibility of reinforcements arriving, attempting to extract information from these goons now would be a waste. The advantages of obtaining the information now are outweighed by the risks involved, and the possibility of a far higher payout in the form of a full interrogation by the side of a healer. You're generally used to going for the bigger payout, actually.

"I don't disagree with Texas. It's not really a good idea to go through with any interrogations right here. We should just take them to this bar you mentioned." you are kind of in need of a drink right now, with how the day's been. "Where is it, by the way?"

"Close by. Just go through this freeway, turn to left, keep going for a kilometer and a half, turn right, you're there." Texas says, right before putting another stick of chocolate in her mouth. You wonder if they make these chocolate sticks look like cigarretes on purpose- no, that one actually is a real cigar. "Though-" she says, gesturing to the truck- "we still have to go get Sora first. Let's go, then."

Texas reminds you a lot of Nicole, the fifteenth amongst your ranks. The way of speaking is pratically identical, and it seems that they're even both smokers. But again, there's probably a lot of laid-back smokers in the world. And Texas does not seem to be nearly as addicted as Nicole. Few people are. She can quite literally cough out a smokescreen for covert operations. Her lungs are mechanical and are as enhanced as your budget can afford, and even then you still have to replace them every semester or so. Then again, these seem to be regular cigars, and not the Haze Workshop monstrocities that Nicole smokes. As someone who fought on the Smoke War, you genuinely don't understand how people can tolerate it. You fought an entire war to get rid of it, and now youngsters willingly shove it down their lungs. Kids these days.

"I am pretty sure that you fought the Smoke War for money, Sieg. You told me before."

Well, that is true, but it is generally recommended to present yourself as a valiant warrior fighting to rid the City of a toxic, corruptive influence, rather then someone paid to do a job. It looks better in the resume.

"You're the boss, you don't need to care about your own resume- oh wait, no, you just went back to wage labor, like, half an hour ago."

Truly, it is a saddening ocurrence. Well, better get going. These wounds aren't going to heal themselves.

Your name is Capone.

You are the leader of your family's operations in Lungmen. Or at least you were. Your blood brother, Gambino, has seized control of them since the rest of your families got ganked back in Siracusa. Right now, you're waiting on a bench, trying to think of a solution to your current situation.

That moron is going to ruin everything. He's too brash, too hotheaded, and he doesn't fucking understand that sometimes you just have to shut up and do as you're told. You- and the rest of your family- are not strong enough to challenge Lungmen and win. The moron already wants to break the rules and call Yenwu in your ass while you're in the middle of an assault on Penguin Logistics and he's going to get you all killed-

No. Enough. Deep breaths, Capone, deep breaths.

Your head hurts like fuck. You think that samurai guy gave you a concussion. But it's okay- it's okay. Everything is going to work out. You are going to take down Penguin Logistics, take control of their operations, make Gambino shut the fuck up and then you'll survive. Like you always do. You'll keep the family going, you will stay alive.

...you now remember that day. The day where you two swore your oath.

You were scared, back then. Even though you lived your entire life being prepared for it, you still trembled when the day came. When your father, and Gambino's father, told you to kill for the first time. They were traitors, sure, and they were weak. But you were scared of what you were doing, and... maybe you swore that oath with him to feel a little less scared. Misery loves company- if there was someone feeling as shit as you were, maybe you'd feel less shit. And you know Gambino was scared, too. Neither of you are scared of killing people nowadays, but you were kids, back then. As much as he might talk shit and look impressive about braining the traitor, you knew he was scared, too. And you know he had reasons so very similar to yours, for making that oath of blood.

...the hell is up with you today? You're not usually the kind of guy to spend time reminiscing.

Alright, back to more productive venues of thought. Gambino's here to meet up with you, and you two can plan an assault on that shithole of a bar Emperor calls his property.

Oh, he's here already.

"You look like shit."

"Geez, you think?" you say to your moron of a brother.

He narrows his eyes. "You still need to learn to keep your mouth shut." that's fucking rich coming from him- okay, Capone, calm down. You have an attack to plan.

"Yeah, wasn't expecting a samurai attack."

"Hmm? One our guys mentioned a samurai. Beat ya pretty bad, didn't he?" he growls. "They think the guy's some kind of Higashi merc. There's some of those wanderin' round those parts. We're right next to Yan. Higashi's right next 'em. There's traffic. "

A Higashi merc? No, not really.

"All he had of Higashi in him was the dumb hat. Armor didn't look anything like their stuff. I didn't see his face, but I'm pretty sure there was no horn, so Oni is right out. Could be Aegir, but not sure." fuck, your head hurts. "If Penguin Logistics or the brat's dad hired him beforehand... no, not Penguin Logistics. Not their style. This means it's the prince's father. They don't feel safe."

"They got two of ours, Capone. I'm sure they know everything already. Our men already got to trackin' these hacks down- they're going to that shithole of a bar. Remember when I said we'd burn it down? Let's get to it."

You're still feeling like shit, but this isn't a fight you can back down from. You grab onto Gambino's hand. Let's see if you can beat some sense into his head before he goes, gets himself killed and drags you down with him.

You sigh. "You haven't changed at all, cazzo. Still rushing along like a moron." you answer his glare with another of your own. If you don't make him listen, he won't listen. "That guy's tough. Fast enough to reflect my crossbow bolts with his hands, strong enough to knock out one of our guys in one hit."

"You scared of the big bad merc? What's your plan, Capone? Sit around and twiddle your thumbs like you've done all those years in Lungmen? I already got what's wrong with you. You forgot our pride."

"Going in an rushing into their base is just going to get you killed. We need a plan. You said they were going to the bar, right?" that is probably the first good thing that happened to you today.

You've started talking to your brother- who you hadn't seen in years- for barely a day and you can't stand him already. But you have experience in dealing with people who you can't stand.

"If they're heading to a place to hole up- just need to get there first. Set up an ambush, cazzo. Come on."

He grunts. You've gotten his attention. Great. But you'll need to be quick.

As your ride drives through the streets of Lungmen, you're starting to feel kind of bored. You guess that you've gotten used to always have one of your friends at your side. Now that they're, well, gone... you're just feeling kind of lonely.

You sigh. This has been a long day.

"So... what'cha here for?" asks Crossiant, sitting by your side.

Hm?

"Here, in this truck?"

"No, no. I mean, 'ere in Lungmen! What did bring ya over here? Why didja get cut up that bad?" she asks, shaking her head.

You suppose there's no harm in picking up a conversation.

"No idea. I didn't even know I was in Lungmen until recently. I just woke up in the backstreets of this city and got tangled with-" you make a vague gesture for everything around you. "-all of this. Don't have any problems with it, though."

"Uh. You, just woke up here? Do you remember what happened before?" says Bison.

"Yes, in fact. I was hired, alongside my Office- my group of mercenaries- to complete a job in a place called "The Library." Unfortunately, we failed to complete it. I was defeated by one of the Library's safekeepers, and just woke up here afterwards. These wounds were inflicted by her."

"Ouch, man. So ya just don't know what happened? Weird." Crossiant munches in one of Texas' sticks of chocolate. "What happened to your buddies?"

"I don't know."

The mood gets somber, all of a sudden. You are sad about what happened, but you've got to keep going forward, no? That's how the Fixer industry is. Apart from mourning for the dead, you have to keep going forward. And again, you have decisive proof that being "booked" is reversible. You can go back, beat them to pieces, and win this battle.

But before you can continue your talk with the two horned Messengers, the truck grinds to a halt. You ready your weapon- did someone stop you? You can see someone running towards the vehicle, but no one is looking hostile. Well, except for Bison, who has his shield in the ready.

It's a girl with... bunny ears? Yes, these seem like bunny ears. Short skirt, boots, and you think these are called "thigh-highs?" Twintails, too. All in all, she looks like one of these singers you see in television. She's even holding a microphone. You remember that one of these girls- they're called "Idols," right? One of them, a H-Corp sponsored singer, just went and Distorted one day and you had to go and kill her. You ears were ringing for a week after that one particular case.

"Hey, Sora!" calls out Exusiai. "C'mere!"

Uh, so that's the healer. You relax and place your sword back in its place. Sora quickly reaches your allies, and climbs into the back of the truck with ease. She's not as fast as the rest of her team, it seems, but still fast. If you had to guess, you'd say that she fits a support operative role in Penguin Logistics, that with being the healer and all.

"Hey, guys! Where are you going?" says the bunny-eared girl.

"To the Ends of the Earth." answers Emperor. "By the way, you gotta do this man here a favor. Heal him up while we're on the way, girlie. Gotta get to Bison's welcome party."

She takes an inquisitive look at you, then at Bison.

"A Forte, with that logo... you're the MDL prince, aren't you!" she asks, while Bison stammers. "Yeah, we got the welcome party all ready! I even bought the stuff for your apple pie, Exusiai!" she narrows her eyes at you. "So... I got to heal you! All right!

She takes a deep breath. Oh, she's the explosive kind of girl.

"Hiiii! I'm the loveable idol from Monster Siren Records: Sora! The concert's starting, so let's make some noise!"

While Texas starts up the car and the six- now seven of you drive towards the bar, she begins to sing. It's... good? It's pretty good, yes. Not exactly your cup of tea- but it feels like the kind of stuff Sleepy and Arabella listen to. And- your wounds are closing. As you drive off towards your safe location and the bunny-eared girl sings her heart out, the internal wounds in your stomach slowly close up. The blood stops flowing into your intestinal tract, and the outer parts begin to rapidly close.

The pain returns, for a while. As she continues to sing, the Fairy simply cuts through the flesh that she regenerates, but the healing effect stabilizes the wounds, somehow? Exerting yourself is going to get them to open up again, but for now, all the damage inflicted that isn't the actual pieces of Fairy lodged inside of you... healed.

This is actually some excellent healing work. It reminds you of the "magic" you've seen demonstrated in your Ruins expeditions, instead of a Singularity. The effects of K-Corp products are instantaneous. The wound just instantly restores itself thanks to their nanotechnology. This actually feels like you're being induced towards healing, something closer to the accelerated cell division that Lech can induce. Oh, the Voice is singing along, now,

"What? It's a great song!"

Okay, then. You're driving through these very small streets. How does this car even fit here? Wait, you can see the bar in the distance, and- they've laid a trap!

"Caltrops! Watch out!"

Penguin Logistics reacts as fast as you expected they would. They're at least a Grade 3 Office, now that you look at it. Crossiant and Bison immediately ready their shields, and Texas tries to stop the vehicle. There's no way to turn around unless you want to ram straight into a wall, not at the speeds you're going. Your sword is at hand.

Time slows down from your perspective. You open the car doors so Texas and Emperor can escape from their seats. Time has returned to its normal speed. Both you and Penguin Logistics operative jumps out of the truck immediately. Both Crossiant and Bison land safely right atop their shields. Texas and Exusiai landed upright with perfect grace. You didn't register the Emperor jumping at all, but he's by Exusiai's side, somehow.

Sora jumps out with a flip and lets out a scream, landing directly into Texas' open arms.

You take a look at the area. You're surrounded from all directions except the one that you came from. You can detect around forty-nine enemies, and two leaders, in a circle, pointing their weapons directly at you. Around the area which you landed, there are a few improvised-looking explosive mines- whether they can be manually detonated or not is unknown as of now. This ambush was set up in haste- they made this extremely quickly. That means it's flimsy at best.

Of the forty-nine, there are roughly twelve armed with... repeating crossbows, it seems. Thirteen armed with bulky shields, seven with enormous hammers. The rest are armed with knives- not the biggest threat. Is the Syndicate pooling all their resources in this single battle, or can they afford to bring out more? You aren't sure, yet.

Of the two leaders, the first one you know. It's "Capone," the quick in his feet crossbowman. The other one is very agressive-looking. He looks like a fusion of human and wolf, just like the taxi driver earlier and his lizard eyes. He reminds you of a certain Urban Nightmare-ranked Distortion, but he doesn't look nearly as strong as L'heure du Loup did. Is this one the "Gambino" that the goons in the alley referred to? Maybe. Both of them are hanging in the back, protected by their shield-wielding mooks. These shielders are tougher then the guys you fought at the expressway, you believe. Right now, the leadersdiscussing something in a language you do not understand.

All of a sudden, Capone coughs and calls out for you.

"Hello, MDL princeling." says Capone. "I got a deal for you."

The kid narrows his eyes. He's suspicious. Good for him. If he was interested he'd be a moron. The wolfman speaks up as well.

"Ya don't have to fight here, kid. This business is about Penguin Logistics. Take your merc and leave. If you don't want to?" he grins. "Your loss."

Bison laughs. "Yeah, sure, like I'm going to trust the guys who tried to blow me to pieces."

"Well, if you're that desperate to get to shot to shit, your choice." mutters Capone. "Now let's get this started."

Negotiations broke down- not that anyone even bothered building them in the first place. You and the rest of Penguin Logistics are ready to fight, waiting in a circular formation. You probably have a good ten or twelve seconds to propose a strategy, or a formation, before the enemy closes in to your position. Or you could let them do their thing and just fight on your own.

So, what's it going to be?

(Propose a battle plan, be it in conjunction with Penguin Logistics or on your own. If your plan requires cooperation, you will need to say something to PL before the battle begins.)

Sieghart's Note: As said before, the mooks with knives are terribly unimpressive. The guys with crossbows got an upgrade, it seems- these are repeating. Firing lines will have greater speed. The men in shields or hammers are unknown as of now.

A/N: And that's our first big fight. Thanks for everyone for reading this!

Code Name: Unknown

Race: After looking through security footage and multiple rush cam footage, no visible animal features has been found on personnel, for this we cannot pinpoint his race¹.

Country of Origin: unknown².

Reason of Interest: After many investigations, We have come to a conclusion that this man do not exist before December 16.
There's no footage of him walking into any lungmen security checkpoints, there's no hospital records of him, and after looking through the footage of the place that that driver pick him up at, there's no evidence of anyone buying costume and dress themselves up in such a odd way. we simply do not know who this man is and how did he got into lungmen. There's no existence of this man before he walked into that monkfish taxi.
And seeing his combat ability. We cannot say for certain that he is not some kind of secret agent from Columbia, Higashi, or worse, Ursus.

Current way of approach: Find him, bring him in, interrogate him.

Note:
1. There has been some speculation of Code name unknowns race, including: Cautus, Elafia, Cerato. The guy who submitted this guess states his reason for it being: it just feels right. That guys paycheck has been cut in half by chief, don't do things like that.—— Officer Wangxin.
2.Possibly Higashi... but we cannot say for certain, he doesn't have a code of honor and he very much doesn't face his enemy head on, in contrary of all those samurai from that place...

End of File.
Finally fixed at least one of those goddamn servers, I swear to god Lungmen have to put more money into buying better hardware, this stuff makes my second hand computer feels like it was made by gods!
For crying out loud, you have billions in your accounts, spent a few hundred thousand on stuff that is important will you?
I'm gonna call more guys over to clean up the dust... Feels like a fucking tomb in there...

1.8 - Scratch That!
[X] Plan: Working alone to the end of time is a good way to get yourself killed
-[X] You and Texas go up and deal with those two big deals, as soon as they are down, the minions will run away.
--[X] If something goes wrong, don't hesitate to kill.
-[X] Tell the Angel girl to go nuts, take down as much goons as possible.
--[X] If there's someone still moving when you and Texas are done, deal with them.
-[X] Let those two with shields protect the healer and the emperor, And remind them to push forward when the chance appears, less space to work with means less places to hide and run.

1.8 - Scratch That!

The truth is, in the City, loneliness is a good way to get yourself killed. The tougher you get, the more you'll need someone to turn your back to- someone you trust completely and utterly. You're no slouch fighting by yourself, but your true strength is fighting by the side of a group.

So, you'll have to trust Penguin Logistics- your newest employers- here. You turn towards them.

"Texas." you speak as quickly as you can- "You're the best melee combatant here, aren't you? Let's go for the bosses." If you can bring them down, the whole structure becomes much easier to collapse.

"Could you two keep an eye on the boss and Sora? I don't know much about you guys yet, but she's squishy, isn't she?" you say to Sora and Crossiant. "But you can't stay here for long. We have to push forward."

Texas nods at you, as do the shield users. You think of telling Exusiai to go nuts and take out as many goons as you can... but to be frank? She's already readying up to do that even without your intervention. You can just let her go by and she'll wreck them.

Five seconds have passed.

The Syndicate troopers are moving closer, but they'll likely stay in range, that with the improvised mines and all. You take a look at the general area. While they have spread quite a few bombs around the bar, there are numerous "safe paths" is a path here devoid of bombs. Excellent.

That way over there has no bombs at all and will lead straight towards the bosses. You'll go through there

Nine seconds have passed. The crossbowmen are nearly ready to strike- you have to go now. You dart towards Capone and Gambino, Texas hot in your trail. Bison and Crossiant assume defensive positions around Emperor and Sora- who's already singing, by the way. You don't look at what Exusiai is doing right now, but given the panicked screams of the thugs, you'd say she's already hitting them hard and fast.

What is this sensation? As you listen to Sora's song, you feel... energized. Roused, enhanced, faster. It is a good sensation. So she has more in her skillset then just healing. This effect isn't that powerful- you'd consider it a... 20% increase in your total capacity? But it does make a difference.

One of the hammer-wielding goons moves towards you, trying to deflect your assault away from his bosses. Before you even begin your attack, a singular blade, thrown by Texas, cuts a deep wound into his hammer arm. You immediately take advantage of the distraction, and deliver a swift kick to his jaw. There's a loud cracking sound, and then he falls to the ground, howling. You jump over him, slam your foot on his stomach, and keep moving forward.

There's more goons closing on you. Some of the knife-wielders, three shielders and two more hammer users. Texas mutters something, and a rain of blades falls from the sky. She has some remarkably good aim with this ability- though many fall around your victinity, none of themget even close to hitting you. But they serve their purpose in causing total disarray amongst the enemy forces. The shielders are forced to lift their shields upwards to block the rain- and the others either take evasive action or get pierced repeatedly.

With the... below-average quality of your weapon, with it being entirely disposable and created by Texas' ability, you figure you need a source of blunt damage. The biggest threat- the shield users- are heavily armored, after all. So, as one of the goons gets his knee pierced by a falling blade and collapses into the floor, you take advantage and grab him by the foot.

He's very light, actually. With your enhanced physique and Sora's song amplifying you, it's easy to lift him up and slam him on the unprotected body of a hammer goon. He screams as you beat them down with a living bludgeon, and when your new weapon is too battered and bruised to serve any further purposes, you just toss him into the face of one of the shielders.

Two down by your hand, three down by Texas' hand. Of the shielders, there's one- of the hammer users, one as well. You have to take them down before challenging the bosses, and- no, Gambino and Capone have already entered your range. You don't have time for this. You'll leave the goons for Texas.

Capone is readying his crossbow to assault Texas. Gambino is dashing towards you. So, is he a bare-hands type of combatant? He certainly seems so. You can expect considerable physical strength from him, then. Try not to meet his punches- deflect with the blades strewn across the battlefield. Okay, you're ready- he's going for you, alongside the remaining hammer user.

He begins the fight with a dive punch. His speed and power are... they're great, actually. In terms of pure speed, you'd rate this guy grade 3. Unfortunately for him, you're a bit above that level. You meet his assault head-on with a thrust of your sword. Both his punch and the blade meet, and while it digs into his knuckles for a second, his strength is too much for the brittle weapon to handle. It shatters.

But it did its job, and disarmed his attack enough for you to sidestep away. When Gambino lands, his hand bleeding, you simply snatch another blade off the ground and go for a slice to his back. The weapon cuts through his flesh, but he's already spinning back into position, going for you just as the hammer user has reached the fight and is now trying to knock you down with a strike at the head.

First, you block his hit with your armored forearm. Your bones shake from the impact, and the exertion causes the Fairy to act up. A cut forms in your torso, and blood seeps out of it. Then you go for a headbutt.

He's sent reeling for a second- and you exploit the second to cut the hammer in half- but he recovers almost immediately, and drops the now worthless weapon. Gambino is right at your back- going for a wild haymaker. Gambino throws his entire momentum behind the punch, and he has a lot of it. It's predictable- anyone at his level can see this thing coming. But with his speed and power, that typically would just not matter.

Typically. Fighting against you is not a typical situation. You leap right above his strike and land right behind him. While he's briefly off balance, your instinct takes over. Just when he turns towards you, slam the flat of the blade straight into his throat, right into the cartilage. He gasps for air. You have successfully amplified his small period of incapacitation.

Now... you're thinking of something. Something you think would look great in a compilation.

First of all- you have lots of options now. You'd rather stay nonlethal and interrogate the leaders, but if you need to, you'll go for the kill. But there's no need for that right now. You can have a little fun. First, you take a few steps away from him, mantaining your distance. You bury your blade in the ground.

Then, you dash in his direction, and perform a 360° flying spin-kick directly into his face.

The impact sends knocks him off the ground, he slams into the hammer-wielding mook behind him, and both fall like puppets with their strings cut. You think they'll be will be out of the fight for a while. You take a look at Capone, who's clashing with Texas.

They're not evenly matched. Texas is dodging all his crossbow bolts, and already got three solid hits in. You decide that Capone deserves a raise: Grade 4 seems reasonable. Grade 3 for Gambino, maybe? He's way too hotheaded. If he learned to keep calm and got a decent weapon instead of using his fists, he could get all the way to Grade 2. Maybe reach 1 in two and a half decades.

You grab a recently defeated knife goon. It looks like this one got downed in Texas' initial sword rain. So you go and decide to use him as your next makeshift club. They let out a panicked scream as you grab them by their foot. Then, you move to get closer to Capone. He recognizes the threat in your presence, but Texas is keeping him too busy to back off.

So you slam the defeated goon directly onto his back. He's sent sprawling into the floor, right at Texas' doorstep. She places her foot on his back, pining him down, and wrenches his crossbow from his grasp. You drop the groaning Syndicate member, and take a look at the situation. Crossiant and Bison pushed onto the crossbowmen' formation and are pretty much finished taking them on. Exusiai, as demonstrated by the ludicrous amount of goons with bruises in their heads, unconscious in the floor, absolutely wrecked their formation with supreme machinegun fire. Absolutely flawless performance.

The rest of the group is in full retreat, having their bosses brought down.

Uh. They have an escape vehicle, it seems. A car. Gambino has already risen back up, and is running towards his escape. He recovers very fast, it seems. He's already retreating alongside his goonies. You could go and take him right now, but to be frank? You're more interested in securing the prisoner they already have. And Capone is important. They'll have to come back for him, and then you'll have an opportunity to finish off the entire Syndicate. If you take Gambino, the rest of the Syndicate will likely flee the city, and that means that they'll take anything they have, and you won't get to seize any loot. If Gambino escapes, his hotheaded temper will likely push him to try again with all his force, and you'll get to take down their operations and snatch anything valuable they might have.

Oh well. You've won this bout. You walk towards Texas, and offer a fistbump.

She bumps you back.

Great. What now? Well, you suppose you have to restrain all these people. Hand them over to whatever passes for the Zwei Association's counterpart here. One, two, three. Eleven surviving goons that could be trouble, plus Capone. The rest are either too broken down or fled the scene. You, interestingly enough, didn't kill anyone, but you don't give a lot of long-term survival chance to these guys you used as a club. Also, you have no idea how you'll keep all these people restrained for this long. Maybe you can just... leave them here? It's not like they'll be that big of a threat without any weapons. Just sort them up in a big pile and forget about them.

Oh, Emperor's calling you up.

Your name is Jaye. You are a finball seller at your Uncle Tung's stall, and today has been a long day. It's getting late. Time to go home and sleep. You're not really in the mood to keep going with the festivities of Sauin.

"This is a great place to run a seafood stand. I can't believe how many customers came through." you mutter to yourself. Maybe that was all the tourists coming in for the holiday, though. Still, this has been a great day for business, all in all.

Oh, is that Waai Fu? What's is she doing here. You try to smile.

"Hey-" ohfuckshegrabbedyourarmithurtsfuck-

"I'll break this arm if I have to." she says.

Did- did she not realize who you are?! The hell she's doing here? She's supposed to be studying for a test, isn't she?

"It's me, it's me! Let go!" you shout. Her grip hurts!

Your friend blinks. "Huh? What are you doing here?"

"I just closed up. I'm on my way home." she lets go of you. You massage the arm. A little more and she'd leave a bruise. She looks even more serious then usual. You'd take a crack at her, but you get the feeling this isn't the right moment for it.

"Did you hear that car accident just now, up on the overpass? There is something strange in the making, today." the Feline vigilante says, looking at the overpass. The L.G.D has already covered the place in police tape.

"...aren't you supposed to be studying?" she said she had an important test tomorrow...

"One must strike a balance between recreation and labor." Oh, so that's her excuse for crimefighting right before an exam. It's not a new one. "If I spent the whole night before the exam cramming, I'd go in there with my brain totally fried."

Yeah, sure, whatever. You scratch your head. You did hear someone talking about the incident.

"I heard some customers talking about it. I hope nobody died."

"Same... but... I heard something at the office. There's some unsavory characters mixed up in this incident... and a total newcomer to the city. Some people say that there was a Higashian mercenary involved with the explosion."

...that's starting to sound like something right out of a martial arts movie...

"As much as people might think, I have nothing to do with any killers, gangs, or anyone in that world. Nevermind Higashian mercenaries, Fu. And you know that?"

She sighs. "I know, Jaye. Everybody who knows you knows what you're like. But with that attitude of yours, it's natural to be a little suspicious, don't you think?

People have always called you threatening. It was mostly your face. The look in your eyes makes people think you're a Triad, or something worse. You honestly never quite understood why.

"But there was a gas explosion on a highway in the outskirts just two hours ago." continues Waai Fu. "A gas explosion on a highway? That's a pretty convenient explanation, I believe. Suspicious."

Wait, she's going to go investigate (Read: beat everyone involved up) that kind of thing?

"Wait, are you going to tell me... are you seriously going to, you know..?"

Your friend has a very smug look in her face. "I told you: one must strike a balance between recreation and labor."

...oh, no. You're going to get dragged into something way out of your grade, aren't you?

"Okay, okay. I'll help. But... is this recreation or labor?"

The light punch in your shoulder she gives you right after you finish saying these words is more of an answer then anything she could speak. Honestly, can you stay one week without getting in some kind of trouble? You just wanted to sell some finballs...

You have successfully held back the assault of the Syndicate. Now, what exactly are you going to do? You have asked Emperor exactly that, and told him that you plan on interrogating the captured goons.

"Yea, sounds great. You look like the kind of guy who's worth the money. Ain't that many mercs like that on the market, you know." oh, you absolutely know. The modern-day Fixer market is ludicrously oversaturated. With Distortions popping up all over the city, and no Association to handle them leaving the Liu, the Shi, the Zwei and the Seven overloaded with requests, everyone and their mother wants to be a Fixer.

That's probably going to change in the future- there's rumors that the Purple Tear wants to create a new Association, led by herself, specifically to combat Distortions. She was even seen talking to Virgillius, the Red Gaze, after his entire Office got killed, to get him to help her out in this.

Nevertheless, you decide to go and interrogate the Syndicate members.

"Hey, after ya finish, come by and have a drink with me. We'll be having the little man's welcome party- enjoy yourself a little. That's our first rule- carpe diem."

Wait, you're pretty sure the rule was "don't sweat the small stuff." He said that earlier, in the warehouse. Oh, whatever. They do kind of mean the same thing. Carpe diem means "enjoy the day," right? Or something like that.

"After that, we'll talk about ya payment."

That sounds excellent. Oh well. What now?

Interrogation. (How will you extract information from the Syndicate members that have been captured?)
[ ] Interrogate the mooks. (Less valuable information, but they're almost completely expendable.)
- [ ] How? (Explain what will you do. You may ask for help from other PL members.)
[ ] Interrogate Capone. (More valuable information, but he's considerably more important then the other mooks, and absolutely more resilient. There's no guarantee that he'll leak anything. Extraction of info was never your specialty.)
- [ ] How? (Explain what will you do. You may ask for help from other PL members.)
[ ] Write-in.

Bison's Welcome Party (Work hard, party hard. What will you be doing at Bison's welcome party, outside of your talk with Emperor?)
[ ] Stay Professional. (Don't talk to anyone. Stay at a corner. Maybe have a drink or two.)
[ ] Make Connections. (Talk to someone.)
- [ ] Connections? Connections to who?
[ ] Write-in.

Character Sheet Unlocked: Gambino

Status of Self and Allies:
Sieghart:
Minor blood loss from exertion, cut in torso.
PL: Bison got a hammer blow to the arm, but Sora's already working on that. No issues otherwise. Well, and Emperor is still pissed, but he's not furious anymore.

Enemy Status:
Syndicate Leader (Capone)

- Grade: 5 4
- Condition: Concussed and bruised, beaten unconscious.
Sieghart's Note: Maybe he's a bit higher. Misjudged his speed and strength. Shame he keeps getting into trouble with melee specialists. Maybe he should be trying to snipe people instead of playing field commander. Would work better for him.

Syndicate Leader (Gambino)
- Grade: 3 maybe 4. Actual capacity 3, reduced by personal temperament.
- Condition: Concussed and bleeding from cut. Cracked tooth. Humiliated.
Sieghart's Note: Fast and strong, but predicatable and highly emotional. Needs to learn to tone it down or he'll die picking a fight against something he can't handle. Likely prideful.

Syndicate Goons:
- Grade: 8-6
- Condition: All goons that didn't escape are either dead, beaten to hell and back, or restrained and unconscious.
Sieghart's Note: The shield guys were actually pretty okay for a Grade 6. Otherwise, shameful display.

1.9 - Structural Analysis

You're... not the information gathering specialist of Turbulence Office. That'd be Linette.

Generally speaking, the most effective tactic for interrogation you've used before was what you called "The Breakout." Essentially, Linette would play the part of someone important to the interrogated party, and you would stage a breakout. There would be a chase through the streets of District 19, where your Office is located.

All of it carefully staged, obviously. Linette would lead the victim into a previously prepared location, and mantain her deception. As she made care to always look like someone the victim utterly trusted, rarely did them not tell her everything she needed to hear. It did have some flaws, obviously. If the victim did not have any people to impersonate, was aware of Linette's abilities or simply knew that there was no way that person was going to break them out, the scenario would fall flat entirely.

So you either extracted the information during the mission, using Linette's superior inflitration capabilities, or you just handed the person you wanted to interrogate out to someone more skilled. Like the Seven Association. But if that wasn't possible, you did have some tactics that you could use.

Straight torture was right out. It just isn't a tactic that works. The biggest issue about torture is that the information is unverifiable. The person isn't going to stop being tortured when they say the truth, it stops when they say what you want to hear. And as someone completely unaware of this city's inner workings, you are fundamentally biased. You are going to let your ideas on Syndicates back home influence what you believe is the truth, and what isn't.

So, even if whatever you do to Capone does lead him to give in and tell the truth, you might fail to accept it, and disbelieve him because it doesn't fit in with your own preconceptions. This applies beyond torture. You are simply unfamiliar with this place, and you need someone to help you out in this aspect. There is never a reason to work alone when working with friends is plausible.

So. That leads you to your current situation.

"Could you please help me in interrogating Capone?" you ask Texas. She seems to be the most levelheaded of the group, and is likely familiar with the local Syndicates. Hm. Perhaps you should stop using that word and ask what they're actually called.

"Yeah, sure." she says, bringing out a stick of chocolate from her bag. "Got any plans?"

"I don't actually know anything about the local Syndicates." you answer, shaking your head. "By the way, do you know their name? Of the organization, I mean."

Texas takes a bite out of her "pocky," you think that's the name? "The group? They're just the mafia. The Sicilians, I believe. Immigrated from Siracusa to here. Got purged by their higher-ups and fled instead of getting killed."

So. This gives you some clear insight already. Suggests a Thumb-like power structure, in which entire groups can be annihilated if they do something their superiors don't like.

"Well, let's do this then." says her. "Exusiai is making her apple pie. Where did you put the guy?"

"He's in one of your storage rooms. I took all the drinks out of it first and left him there. Still unconscious, and fully restrained with these cables you had." you found some of thosse in the very same storage room. You're not sure of what they were for. Right now, were it not for your hat, you'd look sheepish right now. "Plus some tape."

She chuckles. Oh well. You think it's time to get this done.

It took some time to get all the tape out of his body and get him into a more... comfortable state. He's breathing quite heavily, now.

You've stripped him of his yellow-tinted glasses, and he looks quite annoyed for being without them. For now, you've decided to get him into a more comfortable position: no cuffs, no rope, no tape, just him sitting in a chair, alongside you and Texas, who are standing upright. You have to get him comfortable.

This will not be easy- you're sure of it. There exists no single behavior that indicates deception- no "clues" that you can follow to know if Capone's info is false. You have to rely on Texas.

"Good night, Capone." you say. He remains silent.

You need to lower your tone as much as you can. Don't intimidate him. You'd ask the Voice for advice- she always sounded like someone who understands people. But... to be frank, you're not if she'd be open to that. Her intentions seem to be to break people, not necessarily in an useful way. Following the advice of your obviously malicious, Library-related voice in your head does not seem like a good idea, and-

"Hey, I can help out!" says the Voice. "You see, I know him. I know him well, Sieg. He's so-"

No. You clamp down on her. Tune her out. Ignore the information- it's likely to make you biased. While the Voice does have useful insight at times, it's a far safer bet to trust Texas here.

You take a look at her. She's finished eating her pocky.

"Capone." she says. "I will be quick here. What do you two want?"

He just continues to stare at the wall for a while. You'd have to use threats, maybe? Texas looks at you, and nods. You reveal something hidden in the corner of the room.

It is the torn-off hand of one of Capone's soldiers. You wrenched it off one of the two goons that died during the battle.

According to Emperor, torturing and mutilating prisoners would probably get you in deep trouble with the L.G.D. There isn't any rule that says you can't torture and mutilate those who already died in battle, no? Actually, you are pretty sure that mutilating corpses is actually deeply and absolutely illegal around here, but frankly you just don't care. It's not like anyone but you and Texas are going to know this, and she said she's okay with it.

Anyway, you place the hand in Capone's lap. He stares at it for a while in surprise.

"...this is... Fronze's hand?" he mutters.

"It's simple. Some of your goons are still alive. Not this one, though." you come in closer. "If you don't tell us what we need to hear, we'll slice the other. Cooperate with us, and we'll hand your "family" to the L.G.D with no further issues."

You'll be direct and simple. No beating around the bush. Bad cop, good cop, trying to bribe him, none of these are going to work because there is no guarantee that you'll follow with anything you're promising. A clean, straight threat to a thing that these Siracusan mafias value- the idea of "family," according to Texas.

"Okay, cazzo. I'll talk." says Capone, visibly shaking.

Uh. It was that easy, then.

"Oh, don't you understand, Sieg?" says the Voice. "He never cared about them at all. He is still denying himself- mantaining the façade that he cares, that he cares about his family. But deep, deep down he knows. He wants to survive. To keep going. Everything else is secondary... no blood too sacred."

...
you despise that kind of person, but making these judgements based on the Voice's words is not a good idea.

"Our goal." he says, between deep breaths. "was to take over your operations. It's all busted now. I ain't got any way to get out of this situation, and Gambino sure as fuck isn't comin' for me."

"So." you can see the hatred in his eyes. "I'll talk. What else do you want?"

You know, he's my blood brother and all. Real important shit.

But fuck that. He's a moron. He's tryin' to get us all killed, I'm sure of it. He comes into my house, takes over all my operations, and just sets it all on fire.

Kidnap Bison, split Penguin Logistics and MDL, rub out Emperor, that was my great plan. Not sure if it woulda worked, even without you on the scene, merc. What I've seen of you guys has been changin' my mind around a bit.

Gambino's new here. He doesn't know- or care about- the rules. He's making too much waves. Now, you've stung his pride. He has to pull some huge stunt to satisfy his ego. Moron. He'll be going after the Rat King. The truth is, you gotta know when to fold 'em, cazzo.

He wants to "wipe out the competition." Find the Rat King and kill 'em. Knock some heads in the underworld, get the old man out of his sewers, then take 'em down. We have- well, he has a list of Lungmenites with connections to the Rat King. Like that old man who sells finballs. I was hopin' I'd be able to convince him to not do this shit, but. Well. Look at my current situation, cazzo. Not like he'd listen to me with con le sue coglioni girati- what I'm sayin' is that, he's goin' after the Rat King.

The Family don't need cowards... the Family don't need rubes. We'd made a deal with the King, y'know. To live here. I'd probably be the one to let 'em know it changed... like always.

You want locations, hm? Precise dates, the people he's going after? And our numbers, our tactics. Shit. Okay. Just... just hand me out to the L.G.D after this. Well, for starters, there's this guy. Like I said, he sells finballs. People call him "uncle Tung."

Where he lives? Well...

You and Texas stand outside of the room. You gave Capone a ham sandwich she had on the fridge.

"He's lying." she says.

"Well, not exactly lying." you note. She nods. "It's just a completely self-serving narrative. I don't know much about this city, but he's trying to paint himself as a victim in this."

"Even though he set up a bomb in our base." Texas offers you a piece of pocky, and begins scribbling something in a notebook she takes from her bag. You take it off her hands. It's pretty good.

"I can't verify this information. Can you say if anything that he said sounds plausible to you?"

"I think he gave it up too quickly. Not one quip about me, either. I don't have a good reputation with Siracusa nowadays." she rips out the page she was writing in and gives it to you. "The stuff about these citizens connected to the Rat King is all true. I know many of those. Like Tung. Can confirm- they're connected to the key parts of the Lungmen underworld."

Rat King, hmm?

Rats, rats, we're the rats!

We prey at night, we stalk at night, we're the rats.

I'm the giant rat that makes all of the rules...

Let's see what kind of trouble we can get ourselves into!

Ah, good memories. You're pretty sure that this Rat King isn't Ocho, though. What Texas told you about him makes him look like some sort of refined, well-dressed figure that rules over the Lungmen underworld enforcing certain rules. Like the "no live ammo in downtown parts of the city" thing, probably? Maybe.

The Rat King you know is probably physically incapable of being "refined" in any way. He's a crafty little bastard, but for sure he ain't refined. Or well-dressed. Depends on who's looking at him, obviously. Rat King changes his appearance to match what people think a "rat" is. To you, he looks like a long-haired dude in a really shitty suit and a crown, to someone that hasn't had experiences with Rats of the Backstreet, such as Nestborn, he looks like a regular-sized hat with a crown.

There was this one client you had, who was so sheltered he couldn't see Rat King at all. Entirely unaware of what a rat was supposed to be.

"If the info he gave is legit, we might be able to trust him. He's basically burned all his bridges by telling us this. If his partner finds out that we have this list, and that we know he has it as well..." you say, reading through the information that Texas compiled.

Texas makes a "cut" gesture through her neck. "Still, keep him away. Not trustworthy in any case. No one willing to sell their allies out that easily is." she says. You nod.

The Voice seems to actually be kind of correct now. That man really is looking one those people. Those who'd sell out everyone that placed their trust in them just for a sliver of a chance to save their own skin. This could be some kind of plan to misdirect you and lead you into a trap, but you already took a massive amount of their forces on when facing an ambush. There is no reason to believe another ambush, with damaged forces and a leader down, will work at all.

Oh well. You'll leave this dumpster fire of a Syndicate leader in his little room. Maybe bring out a piece of Exusiai's apple pie, later. You can already pick up the delightful scent in the air, with your enhanced senses.

It's time to party.

And now the Voice is clapping in the background. Way to ruin the moment.

"Sorry."

The Ends of the Earth is a quite large bar.

The decoration is a bit different from most places you're used to go, but again, the only bar you visit is Dong-Hwan's pub, and Dong-Hwan almost filed for bankruptcy after spending months as a book in the Library. You- and quite a number of other Fixers who were regulars at his place- had to crowdfund him back into financial stability.

Oh, is that Exusiai's apple pie? The smell fills your nostrils and your mouth is already watering. Forget the alcohol. You're here for this pie.

But, obviously, you have to wait for Bison to have his first slice. He's the guest of honor here, after all. You sit at one of the couchs alongside Texas and Emperor. She hands you a bottle of wine.

"Domaine Leroy Chambertin Grand Cru 1053." you mutter. Looks expensive.

"Don't worry, hatman. This ain't coming out of ya pay. Think of it as a welcome gift. Everything for the homies." says the Penguin. "They don't make those anymore, ya know? Gaulian wine. Can't make Gaulian wine if there's no more Gaul, eh?"

The table in front of you is covered with bottles. Wine, whiskey, beer, and soda. Probably for Bison, who is sitting in another couch next to yours. Well, you suppose it a few drinks won't be a problem.

Oh boy.

It had been a half-hour since they'd started drinking, and most of Penguin Logistics was still not past the "slightly tipsy" stage. Except Texas, obviously. She looked completely unaltered. You have some very advanced filtering systems inside of your body, so you are not affected at all.

There are Fixers that modify their countermeasures against poisonous substances- which you've always seen as a necessity in this industry- to not register alcoholic beverages as a poison. Either that, or they simply drink enough to overwhelm the filters. Your personal opinion is that these Fixers die when someone ambushes them during their periods of drunkeness.

You've already drank the entire bottle of Gaulian wine. That was apparently an impressive feat.

"So... what'd you guys find out?" says Exusiai.

"He broke almost immediately to save his own skin. But for now, we know the enemy's identity, their goal, and their numbers, as well as a vast amount of information in their abilities. Around 170 operators, not counting the ones we beat down." says the Messenger. "We don't exactly have any way to verify most of it, unfortunately. The gist of it is that they're the Siracusan Mafia, and they wanted to take Penguin Logistics's territory in Lungmen ...even though we're a logistics firm and... never mind."

"Well, you do seem to hold territory. Didn't Emperor call that part of the town part of his empire?" asks Bison. Texas stares at him for a second.

"Are we a gang now...?" she mutters behind her breath. You give her a pat in the back.

"Gangs always offer protection rackets, you know. Do you offer any?" you say. "Well, see? You're not a gang. Trust me, I have met a whole lot of gangs around my career. That's their defining characteristic!"

"Speakin' of ya career-" Crossiant notes. "Tell the baws a story! Yer a merc, right. You gotta have a fun story for us folks."

A story, hmm. Well, you were thinking about this one earlier on the day. You'll have to modify the story a little bit. There was a map of the world in one of their storage closets, if you remember it well. It was alongside all the files on previous jobs.

...maybe you shouldn't have opened that one. But eh, no one saw you.

Perhaps have it occur on... Sargon? The map told you they were "wastelands." No one would be able to contradict you. Change the Index a little, mayhaps? No, you just need to keep all things City-specific out.

"Okay. Sit around, all of you. I will tell you... about the Case of the Left Finger-"

Someone knocks in the door. You hear the sounds of unlocking- and the door opens. Your hand would already be in the hilt of your new weapon... if you hadn't left it next to the other couch, stored in one of Texas' spare sheaths. If this is a hostile, you'll have little time to grab it and go in the offensive.

The person who walks in is another angel- Sankta? Is that what they're called? The differences between the newcomer and Exusiai are many. Blue hair- dimmed glow in her wings and halo, plus two black horns protruding from the sides of her head. She carries two ornate staffs.

"Mostima!" squals Exusiai. Oh, so she's not an enemy. You allow yourself to relax.

The horned angel smiles softly. "How are you all doing? It's been a long time, hasn't it?"

Exusiai narrows her eyes. "It's been about four years and three months, Mostima."

"Yeah, that's pretty long. Sorry for getting you guys to wait this much. Got a little sidetracked." Oh dear. This does not seem like something you'd like to get involved in. The angel's eyes focus on you and Bison, and she walks closer to the two of you. "So. Who are the two of you? I kind of recognize the kid, but not you."

You offer your hand at her. "Sieghart. I am a mercenary, and I've been hired by Penguin Logistics for a brief task. Nice to meet you." she accepts your handshake. Her grip is firm.

"I guess I better introduce myself. I'm Mostima. I'm the last Messenger of Penguin Logistics. Nice to meet you too."

Bison smiles at her. "Uh. I'm Bison. I work for Mountain Dash Logistics, and I got sent here by my father to learn what I can from you guys. "

Exusiai takes another sip of a can of beer. She looks like she's sulking.

"Don't give me that face. It's not like you." says Mostima. In response, the redhead smiles. It is a fragile smile.

"It's nice to have you back, Mostima." she points at you. "Well, Sieg was just going to be telling us a story. Wanna hear?"

"Sounds nice." she takes her seat next to the gunner. "Go on."

Well. You suppose you have to continue, now. You take a piece of Exusiai's apple pie. It smells really good and probably tastes even better.

"Well, it all started when I received a job offer from an anonymous contractor. They wanted us to..."

...you're so fucked.

Your name is Capone. You are officially a traitor to your family.

If they ever found out what you've spewed out of your mouth, you would not be left alive. Funny that, for someone who was seething so badly about you betraying your family by not being a prideful moron and shit like that, Gambino turned out to be right.

You are a worm. You are now quite aware of that. You will do anything to stay alive. You have realized, after spending so much time denying it... that you are someone who will sacrifice anything and anyone to keep living for one more miserable day.

Can this even be considered life?

You're going to be handed to the L.G.D by the end of this night. Or executed by Gambino. Ha.

What the fuck did just happen to you? You didn't have to talk. You know they wouldn't hurt you. They'd just kill these other guys. Then why did you say this? You don't care about them, you're sure of it. It couldn't possibly be some kind of care, or importance that you give to your "family." You murdered them before. Why would you start caring now?

You must be an even more self-serving creature then you thought you were. You broke your word for absolutely no reason, because you were afraid. Gambino is going to go and get himself killed, with his destroyed forces, against the Rat King.

And you're going to sit here, and then rot in an L.G.D holding cell for the rest of your disgusting life.

Hmph. Seven years ago, when we buried the old boss, you sent me here, to Lungmen.

You came halfway across the world to set up a business that could support the Family, like a backstop. But it wasn't for the Family, was it? Gambino just had to go and screw up in Siracusa. Get himself purged by Signora Sicilia. And what did he do? Take a road trip, hop on over here and take over everything you broke my back to build.

But didn't you deserve it, in the end? You didn't build this for anyone but yourself. You don't have any pride. You just keep going without any sort of meaning...

You keep muttering excuses and self-recriminations, a pointless and timeless endeavor. You don't know how long it takes. The half-eaten sandwich they gave you tastes like ashes in your mouth.

If only you could just live, for once in your life. Not struggle to carve your place in Siracusa, in your father's heart, in the underworld of Lungmen, in your own damned Family. If only.

If only someone could listen to you and tell you what you're supposed to do right now.

And then... a voice echoes in your head.

It's faint. Faint and distant, but she sounds so... sincere. So accepting. She has been listening to your half-mad mutterings for... god knows how long. And for some reason, you don't think she'll use this against you. She listens to you without judgement, and she speaks to you.

"Is it really that bad to want to live, Capone?"

This voice... it sounds like sunlight.

"And then, they give me out the last of their Prescripts. Speak to the nearest mercenary organization. Request them, anonymously, to cut off your left pinky finger. Resist their assault as much as you can. Aside from the finger, the mercenary themselves must not harm you."

"They just went along with that stuff? No questions at all? From a piece of paper?" asks Bison.

"Eyup. Let me tell you, talking to the Index is always so creepy. These people would throw themselves off a cliff if the Prescript told them to."

Mostima throws her can of soda into a trash bin all the way across the room with remarkably good aim. Emperor finishes his... eighteenth? Bottle of beer. He stands up from the sofa and gestures for you to follow him.

"Well, sorry for not being able to answer any more questions about the story, but I guess me and your boss need to have a talk." you walk towards the penguin, as t. "See ya."

You and Emperor sit at the bar stools, a bit away from the rest of the party. He hands you a small file. A contract, hmm? You skim through the pages. It's pretty standard stuff, or so it seems. Unfortunately, you don't have any way to know if this value... 150.000 LMD? You have no idea of whether or not this is a lot or a very small amount of money, but the terms seem fair.

You will assist Penguin Logistics in destroying the Siracusan forces. You will remain in their employ until they have been neutralized or rendered incapable of remaining on the city.

So you sign the contract, and shake Emperor's flippers.

It's been a hour and a half since the party started, and they're all getting tired of this. You can tell that they want to go back into the action. So... might as well propose a plan, right? No one is drunk. Texas hasn't actually drank anything, apparently. Just the non-alcoholic beer. So she can drive. The rest of the folks aren't anything but slightly tipsy, and Emperor seems to have inhuman tolerance. And they're already recovering really quickly, apparently.

"We have to go." says Exusiai. "They're probably going to go after those citizens with connections to the Rat King. If we just stand here and get drinks while they're beating up a bunch of grandpas..."

"Yeah, our reputation's gonna take a hit." mumbles Crossiant.

"Well, we need a plan." mantains Bison, who's apparently big on being the voice of reason in any given circumstances. "Do you guys have anything?"

"I know where that Uncle Tung guy lives, actually. We bought a whole bunch of finballs from him last weekend!" exclaims Sora. "We can go there and get him safe before the mafia comes for him!"

...well. These are some plans. What now?

[ ] Write-in.

A/N: I'm glad you guys liked my Dreadnought Sieg. What kind of team would you bring him on? Is he, overall, good?

"If they're going after the Rat King's friends… we need to warn him, no? Is it possible for us to contact them?" you note. It would be good to get some help.

"If these friends are already being attacked, he absolutely knows already. Think they have?" asks Texas.

You shake your head. No. They took a big hit recently and lost a major leader. According to Capone, Gambino isn't the true leader of this Syndicate- sorry, the "mafia," apparently. He just took it over recently. That means his control is shakier than it should be, and with this difficulty plus the necessity to sit down and lick his wounds, he'll be acting slowly.

"He's likely putting the plans in motion now. If we're fast, we can act quickly and secure their friends before they get too far."

As you speak, it's hard to not silently wonder if maybe this whole party thing was a mistake, in the end. Eh, the past is the past, no use crying over it. As long as you can still move to grasp the future, it's all fine and dandy.

"The old man has ears all over the city. I'll write 'em a letter- we just gotta hand it over. We can do that on the way." speaks Emperor.

"But wait- what are we going to do with that guy? Capone." asks Exusiai. Oh. You did not think of that. "We can't just leave him here, right? And you guys promised to hand him off to the L.G.D."

You shrug. It's not like you care too much about what happens to him. You didn't like him at all. You could just hand him off to get executed for betrayal without a second thought. Maybe it was better to not say that out loud, though.

Hm. You wonder where the Voice is now. She'd have chimed in with a comment by now.

To be frank, as much as you might joke about her being some kind of schizoid hallucination, you are absolutely aware that she is not. There is something dangerous about her. Not only is she very clearly connected to the Library- having strengthened in clearness and intensity as you came closer to it- but it has been reported that the victims of the Distortion Phenomena and the users of Psychoment have both experienced strange voices in their heads.

If there is one thing a Fixer should never do, is underestimate an opponent. Even if the enemy does not seem to exist at all. So the Voice being a no-show for now is… not something you're appreciating.

Croissant seems conflicted. "We could just bring the guy with us. If anything, we can get more out of 'em in the way! I'mma go get them here."

Seems about right. As the rest of Penguin Logistics readies themselves for battle, you take a step outside the bar. You have the feeling this is going to be a long night. Mostima walks at your side.

"Heya."

You take a look at her. She looks well-traveled, in your opinion. That black coat is ragged. It has been taken care of, but the wear and tear shows. And those staves… they give you a strange feeling. It is as if you could feel something inside of them.

When you gaze upon their metallic surface… It is almost like someone is staring back. How peculiar. It reminds you of these Ruins artifacts that you're paid to dig up, sometimes.

"Hello, Mostima." It is generally a good idea to be polite, when talking to people you don't know very well.

"So. How did you get working for Penguin Logistics? You look like you're out of place, here in Lungmen." she saw through you so easily… How interesting.

You shrug. "I have recently woken up in this city after a failed mission and got tangled with your little group's troubles. It's really nothing new for me."

She does not speak. You two just stare silently at the city's lights, for a few seconds.

"You're a long way from home, aren't you?"

…you guess that you are, yes. You nod.

"You got anyone to return to?"

You almost nod, but then… no. You're not sure. You're not even sure if Laser-Eye escaped that Arbiter. Emil almost certainly didn't. The rest of your Office might have survived. But again, you can never know. When you go home, it's quite likely that the Office might be empty. But that is something you can change, no? Return to the Library and get the books of your friends. Yes, that is what you must do.

"You don't have anyone… but you have something you need to do, back home." that serene smile… if you'd guess, you could say it hasn't left her face in years. "So take on these sights as long as you can. There's nothing wrong with a bit of thrill-seeking. Oh, they're already here."

With the sound of a car engine, you know that the rest of Penguin Logistics is ready. Crossiant has Capone in an over-the-shoulder carry. That's gotta be humiliating.

"Ready to go?" asks Texas, already on the driver's seat. Man, that was pretty quick.

You are Lappland Saluzzo, and you aren't in a good mood today. Well, you are, but it's less good of a mood then it usually should be.

You're supposed to be hunting down two traitors. "Capone," and "Gambino." They fled Siracusa to evade their responsibilities, it seems. Well, you can't have that, ha! You've been tracking their scent through Lungmen, and it seems that they've gotten involved with your dear little Texas. It sounded interesting, so you decided to let them live, and go after them after this was all over.

You can't rely on Texas to do the actual work, after all. She's changed so much. Why, you even think she'd let them go alive, if push came to shove! And you can't have that.

Maybe if you dragged the corpses of these two little puppies all the way to her little hidey-hole with the rest of her Messenger buddies, she's get into a more prim and proper state? Seems worth a try, ha! It sounds like your idea of a good time, making her face that past she's been trying to hide from once again.

But someone has been interrupting you! How interesting. Rumors of a strange, armored mercenary descending upon these dregs that call themselves "Sicilians," like a blazing star. It makes you want to let out a great and wide laugh, for all to hear! You can't let him make things too easy for dear Texas, can you? You'll involve yourself in this whole debacle a little sooner then you thought you would.

Hey, hey, who is this mysterious man after all to get between you and Texas? No one, that's who he is. Or she. The rumors weren't clear, we they? Not only is Texas shirking her duties, she's also letting other people handle them for her! How downright shameful...

It seems that, according to these very same rumors, the two traitors came to Penguin Logistics, alongside all these soldiers. Only Gambino left. Did Texas kill the crossbowman herself? Naaah. She's gotten cowardly. Not her style anymore, shame on her! They've likely captured him. You've go and have your meetup with Texas right now. No, you'll snatch Capone from her, then have the meetup! Get the traitor killed right in front of her eyes! That'll work her up. Maaaybe.

Ah, you almost forgot.

You've been interrogating this little man for almost an hour, now. He's one of Capone's lackeys. He's crying, now. Sad, really. Can this man even call himself a Siracusan? He just got his arms sliced off and he's already sobbing like a baby.

Oh well. You bury your blade in his skull. There's a wet sound, and then he's gone. You just toss the little baby's corpse inside of a dumpster and keep going your way. There's a finball seller nearby, according to the Great Foodie Guide. He has a stall and a shop. You're not certain if this finball seller, will be open right now... but maybe you can get some food while you search around for Texas.

Oh great, you're hungry now. Aaand the crystal growths are itching. What a pain. This entire situation is getting you so excited!

"You want to survive, don't you? You've spent so much time struggling. So much pain- so much agony. And yet you still try to hide that wish."

It hurts.

"Just like everyone else in this city- in this world. In both worlds. In the City, and in Terra. You're hiding. You're desperately trying to hide who you really are."

You don't want to listen to this voice anymore.

"You just have to tell me. What do you want, Capone."

Shut up.

"I won't judge you."

Shut up. You're a liar. Everyone judges you. Everyone has judged you, your entire life. Why should this voice be any different? You've spent your entire life under judgement.

Father judged you, when you had to kill that traitor. If you failed to kill him, he would deliver his punishment. You were so young. Why is it that you had to stain yourself with blood so soon. Could you not have simply lived your life? Teenagers here in Lungmen don't have to go and murder people for a living. You hate him so much.

Even your blood brother judged you. He was supposed to trust you. But he didn't. You failed to live up to his expectations. For not charging in, even if it would get everyone killed. You hate him so much.

You hate yourself for living as this disgusting thing. You can't even own up to your failures. You can't accept the veredict of your superiors. But you want to live. You need to live.

You hate this. You hate this. It hurts. It feels like there's a hundred mouths growing inside your skin. They want to scream, but they remain bound by flesh. Bound by your flesh.

"Why do you have to hate yourself for wanting to live? Is living not your right?"

Shut up. You want to scream. But the words don't leave your mouth. All of these mouths inside of you want to scream, too. They want to sob and cry and speak and screech and spew all the hate you have for all these people.

But you can't let them speak.

"There is nothing wrong with letting what you feel come out."

You're so, so tired. So tired.

Capone is not moving. You thought he'd be resisting or panicking right now. Instead, he's just... completely shut down. Well, you suppose people have different ways to manage stressful situations. One would think that working as a Syndicate leader for that much time would change their reaction to stress. Well, it's not your problem.

You're almost at the finball shop by now, and what is that you can see at the distance? "Siracusan mafioso." You think that's how you pronounce that word. They're just goons, it seems, surrounding an old man.

Hmm. It's time for a scrap, it seems. What will you do.

The trade, hmm? Okay, then. I'll publish the chapter later today, if possible.
