Lucian is your familiar. He is bound to your soul and life force by contract. This means he will live as long as you do, typically, amd he will protect you, mind, body, and soul to the best of his ability.
This contract is a bit unusual, however, in that when we got him, he was weakened already. If Lucian were to fully charge himself from his link to us all in one go, he would very probably kill us from the drain of magical energy and life force. That would, in turn, leave him in a worse state than before, since killing your charge is the most serious sin a guardian angel can commit.
Lucian was using a fair amount of our standing power to turn himself into a large holy- aligned High Dragon, which was the best choice he could go with for now. Once he is fully recharged, he will be able to regain his angelic true form without harming us and do other cool things under his own power. Until then, we are running on the same battery. If he chooses to use what power he has saved already before it is complete, it will set him back again.
