Not only is your vote broken, but the vote closed yesterday.

This vote wasn't to determine her House. That's already set in stone. We were just determining the mindset she walked into this with. Every single vote is gonna be counted, read, and mixed together into her general opinion.
It wasn't set in stone, but the highest house count vote isn't a sure pick, the arguments influence a lot of the choice process of the hat.

Ginny, 1.0: "The Sorting Ceremony"
A GIRL AND HER BOOK, "The Sorting Ceremony"
1 September, 1992 ○ 6:00 PM GMT

Professor McGonagall's voice broke the quiet anxiety that was gathering among you and the other students. "Anderson, Craig."

Craig Anderson, a burly boy with brown hair, is the first of the students to walk across the hall and take a seat beside Professor McGonagall. Before she even finishes lowering the Sorting Hat down onto his head, the Hat is calling out "GRYFFINDOR!"

Three cheers come from the Gryffindor table. Fred and George lead the fanfare for their new student and you can't help but laugh. The other students around you shoot you a look but none want to risk McGonagall's anger after she already shushed the group once.

"Balaji, Arjun," comes McGonagall's voice again.

Arjun Balaji gives a little wave to Ruby Jukes before he struts on towards McGonagall and takes his seat. McGonagall lowers the Hat onto his head, and then the silence comes. As the Sorting Hat makes its decision, you see more and more of the students in the Hall shifting their attention to the front and quieting their individual decisions. Finally, the hat stirs and shouts: "RAVENCLAW!"

You see Penny Clearwater pumping her fist in the air. Others along the Ravenclaw table fire blue and gold sparks into the air, immediately bringing glares from the seated professors but no true disciplinary action. Arjun takes the hat off and smiles, this time directly at you, before he heads off to the table.

"Beam, Polly."

Polly Beam is a little Muggleborn girl with wide blue eyes and dainty blonde hair. Two other girls give her an affirmative smile and pat on the back before she makes her way to the chair. Her sorting is much quicker than Balaji's; after only a few seconds, the hat calls out "GRYFFINDOR!"

"Burke, Harper."

You recognize the name from one of Uncle Billius and Mum's arguments. Harper Burke is a slim and short boy with shaggy brown hair and crooked glasses. You wonder idly if he and Luna exchanged hair care tips. The hat doesn't take long to sort him into "SLYTHERIN!"

"Burrow, Randolph."

Slim, muscular, short-cut brown hair. He looked like the type to play Quidditch. Randolph and Eurig clapped each other's shoulders as he left for the chair. The Hat was quick with him: "RAVENCLAW!"

"Cadwallader, Eurig."

Eurig smiles apologetically to you as he heads over to the chair. He says something to McGonagall, and you think she rolls her eyes at the boy, but you're not quite able to hear what their exchange was. The Hat calls out "HUFFLEPUFF!" and the Hufflepuff Table erupts in cheers for the first time of the night. Eurig hurries off to the seats, where a Hufflepuff boy you think you recognize as Zacharias Smith waves him over with a grin.

"Coote, Ritchie." "GRYFFINDOR!"
"Creevey, Colin." "GRYFFINDOR!"

The pair passes by in an instant. You're not sure if the Hat spends a collective three seconds on their heads. Fred and George, again leading the Gryffindor cheers, set off a pair of spells that sound like firecrackers and that is finally enough to earn them a death glare from McGonagall and the attention of the prefects. You hope for the sake of Gryffindor house it isn't Percy that ends up scolding them.

You frown. Ron and Harry aren't among the other students at the table, are they? Maybe they're off using the bathrooms.

"Eastchurch, Felicity."

A tanned girl with outright white hair. You wonder how much time she spends maintaining her snow-white curls, or if she just used some charm-work for it. She flutters her black eyelashes at one of the boys she passes by on her way to the chair. Mum would have words for her. McGonagall lowers the hat onto her head, and time slows in the room.

She's taking longer than Arjun did. You keep your eyes on the Gryffindor table and the doors, wondering where Harry and Ron are off to. Well… mostly where Harry is off to. Still… there's no movement at the doors, and the more you look at the Gryffindor table, the less likely it is that Harry and Ron had been sitting down and left.

Finally, the Hat calls out "RAVENCLAW!" and a smiling Felicity hurries off to join her new housemates, who are once-again firing off sparks and celebrating the arrival of another Hatstall.

"Hesleden, Susanna."

A tall and wiry girl with a single waist-length braid of black hair. She's almost Percy's height. You frown in embarrassment for her as she trips over her first steps after being called, but with a deep flush across her face, she strides across the hall and takes her seat. The hat hesitates, but only for seconds before it calls out "RAVENCLAW!"

"Jukes, Ruby."

Ruby mouths 'wish me luck' to you and Beth before heading over for Professor McGonagall and her Sorting. She's recovered completely from the incident on the Train, and she's back now to the constant cheer that seems to define her person. The Hat doesn't take long at all to call out "HUFFLEPUFF!"

"Lovegood, Luna."

Luna hurries over to the chair. You hadn't talked to her at all today but you hope the train ride was good to her. McGonagall sets the hat down on her and immediately it calls out "RAVENCLAW!" An unphased Luna takes the Hat off her head and thanks the Hat while her new table fires off another stream of blue sparks into the air. You smile. You knew she'd end up there from the start. When she sits down at the Ravenclaw table, she looks back over to you and gives a little tilt of her head.

You're almost halfway through the Sorting now. Looking around, it's starting to settle in that you're probably going to be the last person Sorted this year.

"Macavoy, Heidi."

Another student who looked dedicated to the athletics. What were they feeding these kids? The hat doesn't rest on her wispy blonde hair for longer than it takes to call out "HUFFLEPUFF!"

"Malathorne, Eben."

With a name like that, you don't think it surprised anyone when the hat shouted out "SLYTHERIN!" The Slytherin table cheers are the loudest of the night so far, and Malathorne takes a seat next to Burke near the table's end.

"Newcastle, Priscilla." The hat's response was immediate: "SLYTHERIN!"

The Slytherin cheers continue, growing in volume still as a blushing Priscilla bats her green-blonde hair away from her eyes and hurries for a seat next to Eben. Draco Malfoy's claps are among the loudest; when the claps finally end, he turns and jeers on at the Gryffindor table.

"O'Flaherty, Maxine."

The hat considers the dainty Irish girl for only a second before it calls out "HUFFLEPUFF!" Professor Sprout claps at the Head Table and your eyes flick to her. Despite the looks the others among the Table give her, Sprout claps loudly, and the Hufflepuff table erupts into claps and cheers that join her. Snape isn't at the Head Table, you realize. None of the other professors are missing. Is he sick, or is he involved in whatever has Harry and Ron missing from the cafeteria?

"Page, Grant." "RAVENCLAW!"
"Pratt, Fulton." "SLYTHERIN!"
"Preece, Malcolm." "HUFFLEPUFF!"

The first-year crowd is finally thinning out. The quick Sortings of Grant, Fulton and Malcolm match the little thoughts you had about each of them; they're all Boys, of the Boyish variety, and what more was there to say? Beside you, Helen Prince stiffens, and you realize she's up next.

"Prince, Helen."

Helen walks with pride to the chair. Her words to you on the boat-ride sit fresh in your mind. I'd enjoy your friendship, Weasley, but it'd come with a cost I'm not sure I'm able to pay. The politics of purebloods are really something else. You swallow your thoughts. She was more apologetic about it than most purebloods were, and she hadn't outright called you a blood traitor. You can almost understand that she might be scared of what the other Slytherins would do to her if she was loudly your friend. Her words didn't necessarily mean that you wouldn't be, either. She just wants time.

The hat doesn't wait to call out what you both already knew: "SLYTHERIN!" Helen hands the Hat back to McGonagall with a measured smile and makes her way to the Slytherin table, taking a seat not among the other first years but among the fourth-year girls. She doesn't look back at you at all.

"Robins, Demelza."

Looking at Demelza Robins, you can't help but wonder if you have a cousin that you never heard about. She looks the part of a Weasley, but her hair is a few shades blonder and her build is a bit more compact. You recognize her hair-style as a flyer's braid, the sort Charlie always helped you with when you were still willing to play Quidditch at home with him or help him on his pretend dragon hunts. The hat takes about a minute to sort her into "GRYFFINDOR!"

Then, with her gone, there are five of you.

"Rose, Christopher."

Make that four of you. Christopher Rose looks like a Muggleborn student, and he's clearly anxious on his walk to the hat. His hexagonal glasses, marked with topaz around the edges, are the only thing about him that catches your attention. With the glasses and the Hat paired on his head, he looks about as odd as Mr. Lovegood on a good day.

The Hat takes its time thinking atop Christopher's head. The boy's face flashes through different emotions and you think he's whispering aloud at the Hat at some points, or at least mouthing forcefully. You're not really sure what he's trying to say, but the Hat continues its slow deliberation. When it passes the five-minute mark, the room has died down to silence, waiting to see where the Hatstall will end up.

At long last, the Hat cries out "SLYTHERIN," though you think it lacks some of its usual commitment. Rose gets up from the seat and hurries to the Slytherin table, which is only half-cheering the Muggleborn's Sorting.

"Sheehy, Kathleen." "GRYFFINDOR!"

The Gryffindor table erupts in cheers, but without Fred and George's guidance, they're not nearly as loud or coordinated. Ruby ends up sitting next to a few of the older girls you recognize from Fred and George's Quidditch games, who immediately start talking to her and sharing laughs. Maybe Gryffindor house wouldn't be so bad.

"Squire, Beth."

Beth gives you a small thumbs-up before she goes. You look over at the only other student yet to be Sorted, a black- or brown-haired boy with nearly a shaved head. He mouths "S" to you and you hold back a pout to mouth "W" back. He whispers "sorry," while across the room the Hat cries out "GRYFFINDOR!"

"Summerby, Jack." "HUFFLEPUFF!"

All eyes in the crowd turn to you, the last student left to be sorted. Your heart beats like it's trying to escape your chest. Professor McGonagall makes eye contact with you, and the sound of her voice drowns out everything else in the room.

"Weasley, Ginevra."

Ginny, 1.1: "Better Be..."
A GIRL AND HER BOOK, "Better Be..."
1 September, 1992 ○ 6:40 PM GMT

"Hmm," the Hat whispers to your mind. "A curious girl, with such a guarded mind. Talent abounds for you, but your teeth are wet, and the thirst for knowledge has already set in. But can knowledge alone sate your thirst? Would you be content with wit beyond measure as your greatest treasure?"

You want to shout yes. Ravenclaw, please—

"You crave the comfort of those similar to you, but you reject Sorting among your family and those who care for you. You crave the admirations of your crush, but away from him you seek to rush," the Hat muses on, not caring or not responding to your interjections. "So confident that the Ravenclaw will provide you comfort and kinship, but will you provide kinship and comfort to them? Maybe you would be better among the Snakes, where the innocent will be spared your fangs,

"Or among the Lions, where your bravery can shine through. Seven generations of lions in your blood, and yet you prefer the blue…"

Yes, you do. Ravenclaw, please. They'll understand you most, and Luna will be there for you. You can compete with your housemates there in things you care about.

"The quest for knowledge is not always one of understanding. That solace you seek would be better found elsewhere; among the Hufflepuff, you'll not have a want, and among the Gryffindor you'll not bring a stare."

You want to bring a stare. You want to understand. And there's no way that you'd be a Hufflepuff, however much comfort they might offer. The sound of the Hat's laughter fills your mind.

"No, certainly not—I fear Helga would crawl out of the grave if I put you among her house, Miss Weasley…" The Hat harrumphs.

"But what of Slytherin, where your new friend lies? I feel the passion burn in you, the drive to overcome and do more than just try. Slytherin would demand you become the best you can be just to get by… When you dream of the looks on your brothers faces when they see you sorted to Ravenclaw, do you imagine how they'd respond to you as a Slytherin?"

You frown. Slytherin House… it does make a sort of sense, doesn't it? And the look on Fred and George's faces would be something else.

"What of your ambitions? The house of Salazar will foster them best. From boys to impress," you flush at the Hat's taunt, "to the spells and arts hidden over which you obsess… and the rumors, the whispers, where better to put all the words on your family to rest? How better to protect your family? Already, your ambitions demand for your House to rise… would you give it all up to learn past your measure?"

You shake your head. No. No, you're not giving it up. That's not what being a Ravenclaw would mean. You want to learn, and to compete with your classmates, and to be around people who understand you, like Luna…

"Who will compete with you more than the Slytherins? Who will fight against you harder, than a pureblood who sees you become the champion of his House? Prove yourself, and who among them will dare insult those who you love and protect?"

You tremble. But Ravenclaw…

"Ravenclaw will foster you, and you will do well within them. Penny and Luna will take you in, and you will surely learn. But for the passions that inside you burn, for the achievements we know you long to earn, there is only one place fit for you to learn. Ginny Weasley, better be…"

"SLYTHERIN!"

McGonagall pulls the hat from your head. You look over to your family members at the Gryffindor table. Fred and George are becoming as white as ghosts while they slowly lower a pair of "WELCOME TO GRYFFINDOR, GIN-GIN" flags back down to the table. Percy claps for you, and he's joined by Beth Squire and Ruby Jukes at their tables. Ron is still nowhere to be seen.

Over at the Slytherin table, the reaction is muted. There is some clapping spread across the table, but none of the fanfare you'd expect to be associated with the last Sorting of the night. The table's made itself fuller than it was when you last looked at it; there's barely a spot available, even at the end of the table reserved for the first years.

You get up and make your way to the table, glancing at others throughout the Hall. Luna smiles at you and claps loudly as you pass by the Ravenclaw table. Eurig leads a number of the Hufflepuffs to clap for you as well when he notices your quieter reception.

You take a seat at the table's end, sitting beside Priscilla Newcastle and Christopher Rose. Priscilla sighs when you sit down next to her and turns slightly away. Christopher doesn't turn away from you, but he doesn't exactly look at you either. Across the table from you, Harper Burke whistles before he reaches a hand out across the table for you.

"Finally, a Weasley who isn't a fuckin' blood traitor, huh?" You don't reach out to take his hand, instead glaring daggers into his soul for the insult. Burke snickers at your glare. "Yeah, this'll be fun. Rose, you know the only thing worse than being a mudblood like you?"

Christopher Rose snaps to attention, looking at Burke. "No, sir,"

"Being like her," Burke jeers. "A blood traitor in this great house, well, you know there's gon-be a reckoning for that…"

Down the table, a second-year girl sighs and interjects. "Really, Burke, can't you wait until after the Feast to start this shit? It's hard to want to eat when I have to watch you spit all your self-righteous snot out over the table."

"Tracey, don't get involved," another girl's voice comes, almost devoid of emotion. She's got platinum hair almost down to her waist. You wonder if she and Felicia used the same glamour charms.

"'Tracey, don't get involved,'" Tracey mimes back to the first girl in an exaggerated drawl. "That's you, Daphne. He's being gross, and while keeping your food down later might not be a concern for you, I'd prefer not to be visiting the—" Your attention is pulled away from their exchange of barbs by the arrival of Professor Snape back into the hall. Professors Dumbledore and McGonagall quickly rise and follow him back out of the Hall.

With their departure, food appears across each of the tables of the room and the Feast begins. You focus on your own food, recognizing that none of the conversations going on near you are conversations that you'll be welcome to. The Sorting Hat sings, and you focus on its song:

"From the highest heights to the lowest lows,
From farthest flights or Hogsmeade's snows,
Come one, come all, hear my call;

I am the Sorting Hat, and I will sort you all
But before I go a warning, lest troubles fall

To smart Ravenclaw,
Treasure more than the wit you measure
Lest you find your wit too short for life's pall

To humble Hufflepuff,
Stand together, be strong and tall
Be careful who you crush when the Tower falls

To brave Gryffindor,
Not every battle that rages can be won
Steel your courage to live for your loved ones

And last, to clever Slytherin,
By founder's pride, come live again
The dangers you face come from within.

Raise one last glass to Hogwarts fall,
And pray to Founders Four above all
that this swansong is not our last call."

You spent the rest of the feast in silence, picking apart your food and thinking over the Sorting Hat's morbid song. The prefects were quick to escort you all to the Slytherin Common Rooms in the Dungeons after the meal. Some complained that there was no great speech by Dumbledore to open the year, while others suggested he'd just say some nonsense like he always does to open the year. Once you were escorted to the Common Rooms, you were shown to your dorm, which you'd be sharing with just Helen Prince and Priscilla Newcastle.

There's some time for socializing between the Slytherins after the great feast. Most of the students will gather in the Slytherin Common Rooms to get to know each other. You don't expect to receive a warm welcome if you attend, but at the same time, you don't expect to win anyone's favor by not attending the Slytherin Welcome Party either.

What do you want to do?

[] Attend the Slytherin Welcome Party in the Common Rooms (Pick 2).
-[] Socialize with…
--[] (Write-In) Someone you know?
--[] Whoever is willing to talk with you.
-[] Stay quiet and learn about your housemates.
-[] They'll play games, probably. Join a game you see.
-[] (Write-In) Something else?
[] Do not attend the Slytherin Welcome Party in the Common Rooms (Pick 2).
-[] Study in your dorm.
-[] Write a letter to (…)
-[] Write in your Diary about the day.
-[] (Write-In) Something else?

How do you plan to deal with Slytherins who insult your family?

[] Confront them. Burke will get his later. You will not tolerate insults to your family in your presence.
[] Endure them. They will stop in time. There's no need to confront them yet when your actions will speak louder than their words.
[] (Write-In) Maybe there's another approach?

AN: While there were more votes for Ravenclaw than Slytherin by a slight margin, there were a number of arguments made for Slytherin that hit on multiple notes of Ginny's character and played well into her traits. The major Ravenclaw argument was not a bad argument, and it was very reasonable for Ginny to have, but some of its component points applied to multiple houses and not just to Ravenclaw. The want to be around Luna was a legitimate inclusion in the vote, but it didn't strike me as reflecting something deep or integral to Ginny's character. Therefore, while Ginny came in with a strong preference to Ravenclaw and wanted that House as her first choice, she was swayable by the Hat and could not convince it against its preferred option of Slytherin for young Ginny. I hope that this does not cause too much discontentment among the voter base, and I am willing to discuss further as desired.

So I propose we start mingling, making friend with the muggleborn who decidly needs one and paying attention to Slytherin politics, using Ginny eiditic memory as her strengh. We will learn about Burke and soon he will have his comeuppance for insulting the Wesley and using the world mudblood on the first year he is supposed to welcome.

Not sure between staying quiet or just further socialising with whoever will talk to us, either's good I think. I'm good with biding our time before we act, but we definitely can't be too passive about defending ourselves and our family's name.

An answer just popped into my head, not that I think we necessarily need to use it, but it does feel like something that fits our studious persona and acidic tongue from canon

A reckoning eh? Then it has best be done by someone who can count past ten without taking off their shoes.

Really interested in talking to the Muggleborn and how he managed to get into Slytherin - as a new addition to the wizarding world he shouldn't have strong preconceptions about the houses but the Hat couldn't convince him to go somewhere else. But that would probably tank our status even further, if that is even possible. Helen is not only somewhat nice and has an old name, and doesn't dislike us, but I'm also interested to know what her exact relation to Snape is. Otherwise, that Tracey seems cool, and an older friend to help us, with some experience in Hogwarts and Slytherin is probably not a bad idea should we manage to charm her.

I'm not willing to take the abuse of the other Slytherins forever, but right now we don't have a clue how hostile they really are - is Burke just a little shit and most other Slytherins have bigger problems then 11-year old girls , or does the rest of the house actually despise us? Maybe we can even find some allies among the older students, powerful halfbloods maybe that had to deal with similar problems and are willing to lend a hand or something. Also, not sure how much of an asshole our head of house actually is, so until we know more I'm voting to lay low and then decide how we humiliate our detractors.
[X] Endure them. They will stop in time. There's no need to confront them yet when your actions will speak louder than their words.

I'm hoping you are setting this up to subvert the trope, and not actually going with "ice queen" Daphne.

I don't know how I feel about this now that my write in gained some traction. It wasn't entirely serious and seems kind of extra with the whole "don't forgive don't forget" thing, but now I have an image in my head of Ginny keeping a physical/mental list of grudges like a WH dwarf.
