Now that Ginny has realized that she has some prejudices, I agree that hanging out with a few non pureblood, non Slytherin students seems like a good way to counteract that and learn about other people and viewpoints. I'm still not sold on Rose, but what do people think about the Beth Squire-Ruby Jukes-Polly Beam-Kathleen Sheehy clique? We might have an in with our potions partner, and they seem to be an interesting mix of characters. Also, they are pro muggle and pro muggleborn from what we have seen so far. There may be some blowback since we would interact with Griffindors, but nobody complained about us helping Luna who is also in another house and Beth Squire is already our partner in potions and quite talented, so it shouldn't be to outlandish to interact with her and her friends. Otherwise I would have argued for something like first year Ravenclaw girls, but I don't know if they even hang out together or their blood status, and if the others bully Luna I'm not willing to befriend them.
There is a character that does kind of interest me: Fulton Pratt. He is in our house but that is about all we know as we haven't interacted with him at all nor did he show up to the Slytherin Welcome Party.
Hmm, idea: Could we sate Wanderlust by exploring muggle locations?
It would be a good way to get a better understanding and appreciation of muggle things.
Go visit some museums. Go to the movies. Maybe do some shopping.
I bet there is a ton of "normal" things that would be new and interesting to Ginny.
Eeeeeh, neritively speaking Ginnys wonderlust is based around Magic cultures, not so much their muggle counterparts. That's kinda like buying your European history obsessed best friend a Norse drinking horn because "its basically the same" but your friend is actually only interested in southern European history.

That's kinda like buying your European history obsessed best friend a Norse drinking horn because "its basically the same" but your friend is actually only interested in southern European history.
That's not my read of it.
My read of it is that it is about new experiences and new places. Magic or not.
We the readers naturally consider the magical world to be new, interesting and wondrous, but to Ginny who grew up in it, it is less so.
There are many things that we take for granted that would be new and exciting to her.
Movies, shopping malls, airports, and computer labs. Factories, machine shops and museums. Skyscrapers and warships.
Normal humans have made all sorts of amazing things. I grew up in this world and find myself awed by it at times. The shear scale the muggle world operates at eclipses the magical easily.
The trait even says outright:
Emphasis mine.
Now this is not to say that we shouldn't explore magical places too, but not every summer can have a trip to distant exotic locations. Why not explore the world most wizards are so ignorant of right in our backyard?
Especially while Ginny is young I don't think her family will be happy with her going on adventures around the world without accompaniment. But most wizards wouldn't really consider much of anything in the muggle world a threat. So why not have some adventures in muggle Britain to tide us over until we are old enough to freely trot the globe ourselves.
Yeah, possibly. The Weasleys aren't in a situation to pay for that, but if you were able to figure out some means of income for yourself or win the attention of professors in another school, you'd be able to. There's also the American Wizarding schools to consider, which will be taking nothing at all from JK Rowling's American worldbuilding.
...Maybe Astronomy is actually the Dark Arts class?
I can imagine Astronomy being relevant for dark rituals and like.
And we did gain experience to Dark Arts last turn.
By removing any of the actual "Arts" part and just sticking to the theory the class could fly under the radar as "Astronomy".
I do not currently foresee any events or opportunities that would lead to Ginny developing a new or additional affinity, but I will not call it impossible. As far as focuses go, you're able to change your focus as you feel is necessary, but there is a significant cooldown after you change it.

[x] Your oldest brother, Bill Weasley.
Bill Weasley is the best brother the world could offer. He brought you back relics from tombs he raided. He taught you how to work ancient runes when you still didn't have a wand. You don't see him very often, but he still writes, sometimes, and you take his word as gospel. Through his words, you've come to see a greater world. Traits: Weasley, Ancient Runes II, Egyptian Lore I, Worldly, Imaginative, Bookworm Abilities: Defense Against the Dark Arts improved to P (Poor). Dark Arts improved to D (Dreadful). Defense Against the Dark Arts set as starting Affinity and Focus.

"Here, let me help, Ginny," the first voice echoes in your head, and at once, you force yourself to feel calm. You eschew breathing and steady yourself, forcing the tears to burn in your eyes rather than continue falling down your face. No. You will not let someone follow you here to harass you. You are stronger than that.
They aren't speaking anymore but you can still hear them outside the stall. You can still see their shadows moving across the floor. You take a deep breath and force yourself to a steadied breathing pace, twisting around in the stall and immediately pointing your wand to the stall door.
"Colloportus," you whisper, just as the door begins to shake and rattle.
You close the toilet behind you and climb onto it, hiding any part of you that would otherwise have been exposed by the openings in the stall door or the slight space between the stall door and the floor. You ready your wand, pointing it towards the door in front of you and digging through your mind for something stronger than a knockback jinx to throw at anyone who forces the door open.
The door stops rattling for a moment. There's more movement outside the stall, but you can't see what's happening. Then, accompanied with a loud grunt, you hear someone throw themselves shoulder first against the stall door. The door shakes and rattles again, but through the mercy of the Founders, it doesn't give way to the weight.
The energetic voice returns. "Really, Milly? You can't even get past a first-year's locking spell?"
Milly – Millicent Bulstrode? – huffs in response. "You want to try the door, Parkinson? Be my guest,"
Pansy Parkinson sighs. "Step aside, Milly. Really, if you half-bloods can't even get a door open, what's the point of all the blood dilution?"
You tighten your grip on your wand and ready it for where you expect Pansy Parkinson's head to become visible when the door opens—thankfully, another voice breaks the air of the room before you have to.
"God, Tracey, is that two trolls in the bathroom?" Daphne Greengrass's voice came to your rescue. The usual airy monotone of her voice is gone, replaced by an absolutely malevolent eagerness. "And I thought last year would never be outdone."
Pansy's breath jerks before she replies. "Greengrass. Wonder seeing you here. Feeling the urge to purge again?"
"Oh, yes," Daphne replies. "I just can't help myself when you go around looking like that, pug. The way you wander around and flaunt your disease, oh, it's coming up—" Daphne makes a choking noise that quickly shifts to a fouler laughter.
"Never thought you'd be defending a blood traitor," Pansy quickly spits back. "What's happened to the good Greengrass name? Your grandmother must be rolling over in her grave to see a bunch of squib-lovers ruining her good, Grindelwald fearing name,"
Tracey's voice breaks back. "Shut it, pug—" before Daphne speaks over her.
"Shut up, Tracey." You hear a footstep follow Daphne's voice.
Pansy laughs. "That's right. Keel, Davis—your master's talking,"
"Fuck yourself, pug," Tracey growls back, and immediately there's a scuffle of footsteps and wands being drawn.
There are more footsteps forward, a brief flash of light and then the sound of someone smashing into a stall door and rattling the stalls beside you.
"Get off the floor, Bulstrode," Tracey commands, her voice controlled and now matching Daphne's tone. "I'm surprised the spell even hit you through all that fat,"
You see Milly on the floor through the stall door, struggling to push herself up. Her wand is on the floor and she reaches out for it, only for a cloaked foot to stomp down on her hand. Tracey's hand reaches down and snatches Milly's wand from the floor.
Pansy's until-now-ever-present laugh vanishes from the room in an instant. Her breath hitches again and even you, tucked away in your stall, can feel the worry in her breathing.
"Listen up, Parkinson," comes Daphne's voice, slowed from her normal speaking pace and spoken with absolute vile intent in her voice.
"I gave you slack last year because I thought you were pitiful, Pansy, but now? You're pathetic. You just can't help but follow in your mother's footsteps and prostrate and prostitute yourself off to the nearest Death Eater, like the purebred bitch you are…" Daphne takes a long and intentional pause, as if asking for Pansy to bark back at her. Pansy jumps at the chance.
"You think you're so special, Greengrass? You think you can just get away hexing your betters? You'll be dead by—" Pansy's words stop abruptly, replaced only by the slightest gasps, chokes and pants from the other side of the door.
Tracey laughs on the other side of the door. You hear the sound of someone shaking Pansy by her shoulders.
"Milly, take your pug to the stall in the back and lock the door. Since she can't help herself from pissing on Salazar's good image, she can get acquainted with the taste. Don't worry—the transfiguration will end when she's had her fill of the chamber-pot water." After a brief pause, Daphne speaks again, her malevolent tone replaced with a blindingly sweet one. "Your wand will be where you always find it, Milly. Try and find it before Filch does this time."
"And Weasley, if you're done pissing yourself over a howler," Daphne speaks, her voice fading to the distance as she continues, "get back in the hall before the rest of our upper classmen start to think you care about the red pox on Britain you call a family. I won't stand another Moaning Myrtle in our house."
Some minutes later, you escape from the toilets. A Hufflepuff seventh-year with a frown on her face nods as you walk by before she wordlessly waves her wand at the doorknob and hurries off. It'll take a while to process what you overheard and the implications on Slytherin house politics.

Helen Prince pushes a hand against the ground, catching her breath and starting to stand back up. You stride forward and offer a hand, helping your Slytherin class mate rise back to her feet. You meet her eyes and you see a new respect in her while she rises back to her feet.
Lockhart applauds the two of you and commends you both for good spell-work. You're awarded a full ten points to Slytherin house, while Helen is awarded five for her part in the good show... though Lockhart does ask with a laugh that the two of you both make it to his dueling club this weekend. You're happy you were already planning to attend.
The other Slytherins, barring Burke, look to you with a level of pride as the class ends.

There are a number of spells that Tom thinks could be useful for your current situation, but limited to teaching you one spell for the time being, he only shares what he thinks will suit your situation best. His recommendation is a variation on the Furunculus Curse – also called the Pimple Jinx, but Tom says that name "misses the proper intention of the spell's casting and leads to mistakes in execution – that was popular in his time as a student.
The variation of the spell addresses the ease of removal the original spell suffers from, forcing those afflicted to let the resulting boils come to term through natural causes. With skillful use, you could limit the number of boils produced by the spell, presenting the effects at first as a natural development and building up the consequences for those who continue to push on your boundaries.
You agree to learn the spell. Even if it proves too serious for your goals, it remains a strong hex to include in your repertoire as you progress in your studies.
0. Ginny initiates a Charms/DA/DADA Action. Ginny chooses DADA as her attribute to cast the spell Furnunculuscora. The Scarring Boil Curse Furnunculuscora's Spell Learning DC is set based on Ginny's Skill Level in DADA (P).
1. Ginny's [Imaginative] activates due to the spell's Charm quality, providing a positive modifier to dice rolled based on the spell's difficulty. Ginny's [Eidetic Memory] activates, reducing Furnunculuscora's Spell Learning DC. Tom Riddle's Teacher modifier is amplified due to Riddle's [Genius] trait and Riddle's [???] trait. Ginny's [Weasley Pride] activates due to the spell's connection to her drive for vengeance. Ginny's rolls will be affected by her Affinity modifier (1.35x). Ginny has her Focus Reroll available this cycle.
2. Ginny rolls against trait modified Furnunculuscora Spell Learning DC (75): [99* + 5 + 5 + 10] * (1.35) = ~161. Ginny's roll is a Nat.99 Critical Success. Ginny's roll passes (75) and critically passes (150).
Final: Ginny learns the Pimple Jinx Furnunculus and its advanced version, the Furnunculuscora Curse. Through her massive success in learning the spell, Ginny develops first-level mastery with the Pimple Jinx and the Furnunculuscora Curse, allowing for wordless casting of the spell. Ginny advances all standing DA, Charms and DADA EXP and then gains significant DA, Charms and DADA EXP. Ginny gains Wandlore EXP.
The spell came to you with almost unconscious ease. Tom's training and instruction was perfectly crafted to what you needed, and you very quickly moved past just casting and understanding the spell to iterating off the spell. Over the three-hours you dedicated to learning the spell with him, you advanced even to the level of nonverbal casting for the spell. You apologize to the Hogwarts training homunculi that you practiced on and hope their nightly restoration will restore them to proper usability.
Tom, pleased with your skill under his guidance, cheekily asks if you have more doubts about his teaching ability for him to assuage.

Shortly after you finished training with Tom and restowing the Diary, you regrouped with your housemates and headed off to the first meeting of the Dueling Club. While Priscilla was a bit put off by the lack of interest you and Helen had both shown to Quidditch, your displays in Lockhart's class were enough to convince her that your time and her time were better spent elsewhere.
The first day of the Dueling Club is much tamer than you had been hoping for. There isn't much student-on-student practice or dueling taking place yet; rather, Professors Flitwick, Snape and Lockhart spend much of the time modeling duels and showing off the basic forms and postures that lead to success in the duels. It isn't hard to see who the best duelist of the group is: Flitwick stands far above the other two, while Snape stands in second and Lockhart stands in a distant third (though you'll admit he was not entirely hopeless in the duel, and that expecting him to match a dueling champion like Flitwick was likely a lost cause).
Near the end of the session, the students are separated into three groups: students familiar with neither the Disarming Charm or the Wand Resummoning Charm, students familiar with one but not both, and the students present who were familiar with both charms. Flitwick took over teaching the students who were familiar with neither, while Lockhart took over for the students familiar with one of the charms but not both and Snape took the rest. Only Snape's group engaged in what could be called dueling; the other groups focused on learning the first two charms necessary to not immediately be blown out of any duel you participated in.
Helen ended up in Snape's group, winning looks of interest from many in the crowd. Ron, Harry and their friends ended up in Lockhart's group. You and Priscilla ended up practicing together, working on the basic spells both of you weren't experienced with.
0. Ginny initiates two Charms/DA/DADA Learning Actions. Ginny chooses DADA as her attribute to learn the spells the Disarming Charm Expelliarmus and the Wand Resummoning Charm Invito.
1. Ginny's [Imaginative] activates due to the spell's Charm quality, providing a positive modifier to dice rolled based on the spell's difficulty. Ginny's [Eidetic Memory] activates, reducing Expelliarmus and Invito's Spell Learning DCs. Professor Flitwick's Teacher modifier is increased due to Flitwick's [???] trait.
2. Ginny rolls against trait modified Expelliarmus Spell Learning DC (50): [97 + 5 + 7] * (1.35) = ~148. Ginny's roll is a Nat.97 Critical Success. Ginny's roll passes (50) and critically passes (100), learning the Expelliarmus charm and gaining DADA and Charms EXP.
3. Ginny rolls against trait modified Invito Spell Learning DC (70): [87 + 5 + 7] * (1.35) = ~134. Ginny's roll succeeds (70), learning the Invito charm and gaining Charms and DADA EXP.
Final: Ginny learns the Expelliarmus Charm and the Invito Charm. Through her massive success in learning the Expelliarmus Charm, Ginny develops first level mastery with the Expelliarmus charm, allowing slight modulation of its use in combat. Ginny advances all standing DA, Charms and DADA EXP through her massive success with Expelliarmus and then gains DA, Charms and DADA EXP through her success through her success with both Expelliarmus and Invito.
Due to Ginny's success, Priscilla automatically learns Expelliarmus this encounter.
You were able to help Priscilla figure out the Expelliarmus spell over the course of the lesson. She's appreciative of it and offers to return the favor in Potions when you have time free. By the time the club's session ends, you're excited at the prospect of joining Helen and the others working on actual dueling tactics under Professor Snape's tutelage.
AN: Partial update (1/3). The other posts of this update will be put out over the course of the weekend as I wasn't able to find the writing time to complete them all earlier this week. There will not be a moratorium on this vote due to its general simplicity, but votes from this point forward will typically be accompanied by a four-hour moratorium for discussion and questions. Discussion of the chapter's content is appreciated as always. Also, lol GB dice
Charms is now at 80%, DA at 50% and DADA at 40%. Wow.

I'm thinking this to start? Basic enough and lets us work on our foundation. (I assume Tom will slip some DA lessons in there too.)
Next semester when we know him a bit better we can ask for something more exotic, say wandless magic.

Rather than learning a bunch of DADA spells we don't have a good answer for, lets focus on diversifying and getting help for classes that come less naturally.

I think Riddle has proven himself and more to the point I think Ginny has proven herself to him. Silent casting is Post-OWL.

If we show up with an affinity for Curse breaking out of the blue Bill is going to wonder where we got it, given the answer we do not want him to wonder that.

Yeah. In character, Tom definitely earned his tutoring plan with that. Non-verbal casting in 3 hours.
As for tutoring goals, while going all in on DADA or trying to bring up transfiguration sounds good, part of me wants to see if we can get something other than just and extra study period with Tom, something like this maybe?

I have to say it is kind of funny how Ginny does not see the red flags in Riddle's suggestion: "Here is this spell with which you can finely tune the amount of mental anguish you inflict on your victims, small child" *totally not a psychopath speaking*
On that note though we should really think about what we are going to say when someone notices we know how to silent cast a spell. That is not a usual skill for age 11 and the fact that it is a hex will raise some eyebrows.
