I would like to help Christopher Rose, but the fact he is in Slytherin is probably his own fault, considering The Sorting Hat spend 5 minutes telling him it was terrible idea.
I'm really torn on how he actually managed to get in. You wouldn't expect someone cunning to go into Slytherin if the Hat gives them the chance to discuss it when they are muggleborn and from the interaction with Burke he didn't seem like the typical ambitious person. Right now my two theories are either the Hat roasting him for most of the time for being a disloyal, ignorant coward whose only quality is convincingly sucking up to others who got into Slytherin as some kind of last resort (similar to Crabbe and Goyle), or him having a big brain masterplan to infiltrate and rehabilitate Slytherin by showing that muggleborns can also be cunning and ambitious and that the House has nothing to do with blood purity, which the Sorting Hat is half heartedly going along with because eleven-year-olds can be stubborn idiots who think they know best. If he actually was both cunning and ambitious and the only thing speaking against the sorting was his blood status, and he just had to discuss if felt like he was up to the challenge I would expect more enthusiasm from the Hat. The glasses he is wearing also sound weird af, were they the first thing he had to have from the wizarding world because they don't seem particularly muggle-ish or some kind of custom made model? I just spend too long looking at what kind of glasses were en vogue in the 90s and hexagonal ones didn't come up. Maybe he is just the kind of person that always has to be special and unique and being a muggleborn in green and silver certainly is special. Long story short, until we know more of him I'm wary.
Setting aside the dubious sanity of muggleborns who chose to go to Slytherin (although some might not have known about it's reputation ig) it does give us an in group who doesn't hate us for being either Slytherins or Blood traitors respectively. And I for one am not willing to go along with the blood purity nonsense
That group might be just the one person. And right now we have the power to protect jackshit. When we actually got friends and have shown these fools what a great witch we are maybe. Right now the safest option is for both of us to try and fit in with some of the more typical Slytherins.

Actually, this brings up a question: Are we going with the common interpretation of Slitheryn just not having muggleborns? Or just not having them in the elite social groups of the house? I've always preferred the second personally, but idk which route the QM is going with

@Ultrackius

Its "Moderate AU" So i think its whatever would give the best story.

Tracey is by most fanfic (And I think canon? Can never remember) half muggleborn through her mother. So no matter the elitism that exists in the House of Snakes, there is an underclass to potentially make Ginny a proper mover and shaker above her years. After all, if her just entering the House is enough to have a proto-death eater step up to try and keep her in line it just means that he is worried she might shift the balance of power somewhat.

Even if its just providing a line between other houses for the marginalized in the House.

Fred and George mean alot to the Gryffindors. Percy is Percy. That counts for something. If they stand up for a "Slimy Snake" because their little sister vouches for them, that means alot in the weird Cold War Hogwarts often seems to end up in.

Also @MossPiglet

I hope its a big brain master plan.

I checked and this composite picture of half of the original forty Hogwarts students Rowling thought up seems to be the only source for Traceys halfblood status. Note that Hannah Abbott, whose family is part of the Sacred 28 in later canon is noted to be muggleborn here, so the canonicity seems to be questionable. Also, Queenie Greengrass.

Also, Queenie Greengrass.

Yeah, I thought that was a fanon thing I had picked up and ran with.

Though to be fair, she did not veer far from that characterization. So much so that anyone trying to write her as anything other then "Ice Queen" seems pretty sparse on the ground.

I do think that the support she gave here shows that this fanon might be being followed however. So maybe her and the Prince scioness are my votes I suppose!

A GIRL AND HER BOOK, "The Welcome Party"
1 September, 1992 ○ 7:00 PM GMT

Priscilla Newcastle appraises you and Helen Prince while you finish storing your trunk beneath the third bed of the room. By the flickers of emotion in her facial expression, you can tell she's thought of something to say but she never voices any of those thoughts aloud. There's enough space for eight students in the dorm, though you know from your older siblings' stories that the house elves will reorganize the room to fit the number of students now that the Sorting has been concluded.

You charm the lock on your trunk and stand back up. Priscilla makes eye contact with you and tries not to glare. When Helen stands up, Priscilla fully smiles. "Ready?" The words aren't meant for you as much as they are meant for Helen, but she isn't actively excluding you from the invite. You and Helen nod at almost the same time, and the three of you head down to the common rooms.

The Common Room is alive, full of the buzz of different conversations and re-introductions and posturing. After the full train ride and the feast, you aren't sure how many times people have to go over re-introducing themselves and their cliques. You'd bet most of the conversations going on aren't genuine re-introductions after a summer's break but displays of affiliation, closeness and power. Then again, maybe you're being overly cynical about it all. There are a lot of students here.

You make an effort to sort out and recognize the most distinct of the cliques present in the room. There was, of course, the Quidditch Team (or, if you believed the Twins, Marcus Flint's personal army). Flint had a vision for the team and it was clear just from looking at them. Each player was oversized for their position and muscular, allowing them to take the most advantage of Quidditch as a contact sport. It's the type of roster building Ron would appreciate if you didn't tell him they were Slytherins.

Then there's Gemma Farley, the seventh-year prefect and Head Girl runner-up, and her clique. She might not be a member of the Twenty-Eight, but the Farleys of Ireland were well respected among any pureblood circle. You didn't recognize many of the students around her, but you did recognize Glenys Dibble, the mad-dog of Slytherin in Fred and George's stories.

Many of the other students are in smaller groups, likely composed just of their friends. Of these groups, the largest has to be Malfoy's. You recognize most of the students sitting with him. Vincent Crabbe, Gregory Goyle, Theodore Nott, Pansy Parkinson and a few girls you don't recognize take up one of the lounge areas closest to the main fireplace.

Priscilla attempts to lead you and Helen to sit down at one of the lounge areas near the common room's smallest fireplace where the other first years are gathering. You consider breaking off from them, but really, where else would you go? You don't see the second-year who stood up for you anywhere in the common room, or her friend, so you might as well stay with Helen and the others who are willing to talk to you.

"Rose, move for the girls," Malathorne commands as you approach. Rose does so, getting up from the couch he sat at alone and sitting down instead at the far end of the couch where the other Slytherin boys sat. He doesn't say a word.

Priscilla laughs as she sits down. It was subtle, but she changed her steps as she approached the couch to make sure she sat down first and that you and Helen sat down after her. Helen takes the middle of the couch, forming a barrier between you and Priscilla.

Burke scowls at you across the couches. Priscilla rolls her eyes, but doesn't confront the boy. Malathorne clears his throat and tries to take command of the situation.

"I assume we all know each other's names by now, so we can skip past that particular step, but some introductions are still in order." Eben slows down his pace of speech, flicking his eyes between you, Burke and Rose. "I'd prefer we all start this year off well, regardless of the peculiarities of this year's Sorting. Rose, start us off."

Christopher Rose straightens his posture and nods, but it's immediately clear he isn't sure what exactly to say or how Malathorne wants him to introduce himself.

"Right, well. I'm Christopher Rose. My mum and dad are bankers. They still haven't recovered from their first time seeing Gringotts," he pauses, hoping for a laugh that doesn't come. "I'm excited to be part of Hogwarts' greatest house. I know it's been a while since there was last a Muggleborn in Slytherin, but he made Head Boy, and I'm going to try and do the same." You re-appraise Rose at his words. He doesn't look like he has the makings of a Head Boy, not from his build or his actions, but you suppose you don't know nearly enough about the boy to make a comment.

Priscilla Newcastle and Burke, on the other hand, make their thoughts on his declaration obvious. Priscilla has the decency to cover her mouth while she giggles at Rose, but Burke openly snorts at his words.

"A mudblood head boy from Slytherin, 'magine that. The Dark Lord might come again if he heard you spouting that nonsense." Burke stares Rose down after his words, but Rose holds steady. There's hardly any reaction at all to the candid slur, even as Helen and Malathorne sigh.

Burke scowls at the two and shakes his head, dropping some dandruff and broken ends out of his mane and onto the couch. "Right, right, you want to start the year off all hanky-panky. Call me Burke. I don't like you lot, and there's gon-come a day when I don't have to like you lot, but I can keep it civil if you keep your mud away from my blood, catch my drift? My family's blood been pure for sixteen generations by old man Cantanker's math, and I don't in'end on changing that or letting any of you in'ringe on that."

Burke closes his mouth for a second, before inspiration hits his foggy eyes and he postures to speak again. Malathorne looks about ready to cut in, but Priscilla yawns beside you.

"Come now, Harper." Priscilla speaks slowly, clearly mocking Burke with her pace. "As much as you look the part, singing the praises of You-Know-Who and acting like a half-breed mix of a dwarf and a troll won't get your daddy out of Azkaban."

Burke clenches his fist and starts to sit up from the couch. Malathorne grabs him by the arm before he's up. The shorter boy, Burke, considers for a second turning and swinging on Malathorne, but he relents and releases his fists. He walks away from the gathering and heads for the common rooms.

Helen groans.

"Why do you have to egg him on, Cilla? It always ends up the same way," she says, making her first contributions to the conversation. Priscilla, for her part, laughs again and brushes off Helen's question.

"What? You're blaming me? I'm a protector of the innocent," Priscilla proclaims, batting her eyelashes at you and Rose, before her focus settles on Rose. "Besides, it was Rose rambling on about his parents being muggle goblins that set him off. Talking about a bank next to the only pureblood family in Britain broker than the Weasleys? No offense, Weasley, but it's embarrassing to him."

"My family breaks curses, Newcastle. The Burke family is one," you say, holding back the urge to further defend his family name.

"Right," Priscilla nods along to you. "Everyone knows the Burkes are on a downward spiral only made relevant because they're willing to serve the half-wits and half-breeds in Knockturn Alley." You don't know that you agree with that statement, but you're not about to argue with her when she just went out on a limb for you and Rose.

Malathorne steps in when you don't respond, hoping to get the conversation back on his planned track.

"I'll deal with Burke this time, but I want you three to try and keep it civil with him. I'm sure he thinks he was offering a compromise," Malathorne pauses, looking like he's holding back an insult before he composes himself and continues in a more solemn tone. "…and he got insulted for it. He's an idiot. We'll work on that, but we'll need to put up a united front once the year starts or the other Houses will kill us. You wouldn't believe the stories I've heard from Aviva."

You realize where you recognize Malathorne from: Percy's old stories about other prefects. Aviva Malathorne, top of her class in Transfiguration, always complaining about other houses receiving preferential treatment from Professor McGonagall.

Rose nods. "I don't have any problem with Burke. Where I'm from, words don't hurt people," he jokes, but the tone of his delivery is way off from what he's saying.

Malathorne grins and looks at you.

"I won't do anything that gets our House in trouble," you say, meeting Malathorne's eyes head on. He raises his hands, continuing his grin.

"That's all I'm asking right now." You nod to his response, and the two of you break eye contact. "Alright then. Good. Politics out of the way, I'd try to finish the introductions but that didn't go so well last time…" Malathorne ends up talking for a while, spending a lot of words to say close to nothing at all. Rose enjoys the conversation, and you and Priscilla occasionally add to it. Helen stays quiet throughout, and you think if she could have left the conversation without appearing rude, she would've taken the opportunity. You learn a bit about Malathorne and Priscilla's family dealings: Malathorne's family deals in the trade of magical creatures and holds legacy positions in the Ministry's offices of international commerce and foreign affairs, while Priscilla's family is marked with a large number of prominent aurors, lawyers and the occasional Unspeakable.

Eventually, however, the conversation dies down. You had wanted to talk to Helen and get to know her more, and you felt that you were getting marginally closer to her just through your conversations in her proximity, but her walls stay as high as they've ever been. Older students poach Malathorne and Helen from the lounge to join their own conversations, cutting off your attempts to talk with her tonight. Fulton Pratt apparently stayed in his dorm throughout the entire event, as you never see him make an appearance. Rose heads back to his dormitory and Priscilla makes her way over to Draco and Pansy's circle. You consider following after one of them, but you change your mind when you catch glimpse of the girl who defended you in the Great Hall.

(…)

Tracey looks up to you as you approach her. She's sitting with a reclined Daphne, who has become somehow paler (and a little clammy) since you saw her in the great hall, but the two are otherwise alone in their area of the lounge.

"Weasley," Tracey greets and acknowledges you. Daphne groans and continues to stare up at the ceiling.

"Hey, Tracey," you reply, taking a seat down on an armchair near their couch and table. "Thank you for earlier." Tracey raises an eyebrow at you while Daphne finally sits up and looks at you.

"Sure," Tracey says, her facial expression switching between a number of unreadable emotions before she shrugs at you. "It's Tracey Davis, by the way, and this is Daphne Greengrass. If she likes you, you'll get away with calling her Queenie."

Daphne frowns at Tracey.

"I think we've met before," you say, connecting Daphne's last name to a distant memory. "Your sister and my cousin play together sometimes." Daphne switches from frowning at Tracey to looking at you again, new curiosity in her eyes.

"Maybe. Astoria has a lot of friends, but I don't think I've heard her talk about a Weasley." She makes eye contact with you, waiting to see if you'll take your statement back, but you trust your memory. After a moment, Daphne shrugs. "I wouldn't put it past Father to try and set that up. If your cousin is Leonie's girl, he's been mad ever since she left the Department. What's her name?"

"Mafalda," you answer.

Daphne hums in response, chewing over her response for a minute before she lets the conversation end. She reclines back on the couch, covering her eyes with a robed hand to block out the chandelier lights. Tracey lets the quiet sit for a moment, and you're not sure what to say to the two girls, now that they've both moved past your conversation attempts. With the night dying down and curfew coming ever closer, the common room begins to clear out, and your attempt at conversation feels progressively more strained.

You get up to leave the common room, and finally Tracey speaks again.

"Word of advice, from a half-blood to a blood traitor," Her tone is serious, and her words careful but quiet. "It's easy to see someone stick up for you and think they're doing it out of kindness or a respect for you. Most of the time, they're not.
"Save your thanks for people who deserve it, and try not to get killed out there."

Ginny, 1.3: "The First Step"
A GIRL AND HER BOOK, "The First Step"
2 September, 1992 ○ 8:30 AM GMT

The opening class of your first year is a combined-section double-session of Defense Against the Dark Arts with the Ravenclaws… almost as importantly, it's your first chance to talk to Luna Lovegood since you got to Hogwarts and were Sorted. You sit near the middle of the room, and Priscilla and Helen follow you, filling out to your left. Most of the Ravenclaws come together and sit near the front of the room, and you worry for a second that Luna is among them and didn't think of you, but soon enough she arrives and takes a seat beside you. The rest of your Slytherin class mates fill out the back of the room, with Burke specifically taking the seat closest to the door.

The clock ticks, and you don't see Professor Lockhart anywhere in the room. Helen Prince sighs. You wonder what could possibly be so important for Lockhart to be late to the first class of his teaching career.

Then, suddenly, the sound of footsteps fills the room. You turn to face the door and see Professor Lockhart, with a glowing smile and windswept hair, stride into the room with robes billowing behind him. He spins with a triumphant air as he reaches his desk at the room's front, raising a hand to the air and snapping with authority. The lights in the room dim out, transforming the previously innocuous incense sticks arranged on his desk into the room's primary light source. Lockhart closes the hand he snapped with, and then opens it, and the fire of the incense sticks spreads out to great torches behind him.

"Allow me to WELCOME you," Lockhart speaks, his voice amplified by a spell to great volume. When he shouts the 'welcome,' the sound is almost painful, "my beautiful students, to Defense against the Dark Arts! There are many in the Ministry of Magic who believe that Defense is an art best understood through theory—don't make me laugh! It isn't theory that allowed me to kill the Lich of Khirbet Midras! It wasn't theory that allowed me to face the Merfolk menace, and bind the Myrmidon back beneath the Black Sea!

"It was experience, practice, courage—above all, it was WILL."

Lockhart sat down against the table, and his incense torches returned to candles. The lights in the room did not fully return, leaving the room at half-light.

"To learn to defend yourself against the Dark Arts, you must have the will to defend yourself. You will not find that will in any book, letter, work or scripture. The only place you will find it is in the heat of the moment. We'll be learning two spells today: the Knockback Jinx and the Shielding Charm. Find a partner outside your house, put your books somewhere safe, and let me show you a whole new world of magic."

[] (Partner) with Luna. You don't like the idea of hurting your friend if the spells go wrong, but you know her best.
[] (Partner) with Arjun. He looks like he could take a jinx or two and you still haven't fully forgiven him for the train ride.

[] (Practice) the Knockback Jinx first. Considered the easier of the two spells, but the one most liable to injure someone if used without caution.

Looking forward past your first-class and towards the rest of the week, how will you spend your free time and how will you behave in classes?

[] (Free time) is for your puzzles. Work on Bill's puzzle and update your diary.

[] (Class time) is for winning house points. Aim to be the clear best in your class.
[] (Class time) is for figuring out politics. Aim to understand Slytherin dynamics better.
[] (Class time) is for building relationships. Aim to befriend and win ins with your professors.
-[] (Write-in) If you have preferences on professors, you can note them here.

AN: The full effects of Ginny's mindset vote aren't directly touched on in these two chapters, though choosing more direct responses would've had a significant impact with her interactions with Burke and Newcastle here. Helen Prince social ended up more of a "social with people around Helen Prince," but she is a noted introvert and has given Ginny a warning that she's not willing to openly commit to friendship yet. Tracey Davis social was shorter than I had originally planned, but I hope it wasn't entirely unsatisfying.

We already have a decent start on studying (what with we spent our summer on) so lets get working on those puzzles. Plus just our traits and natural intellect should carry us through classes well enough to start.

Don't really have to strong opinions on the first two choices but I think the second two should synergise at the very least with Socialising and figuring out politics going naturally together. These choices are only for the first week so it makes sense to me to work on socialising and getting an in with people (and hopefully overcoming some of the prejudices) before the cliques solidify as this update showed they were very prelevant in Slytherin and thus I think it's important we find a place before we're inadvertently locked out and isolated.
Alternatively Free time is for Studying and Class time is for figuring out politics could work out quite well together and potentially open up a route into a more studious clique in Slytherin (if they exist). Or the other obvious combination of Free time is for Studying an Class time is for winning house points could open up paths for us on Merit potentially but that one runs the greater risk of backlash from others as we don't have spend time Socialising or identifying house politics and could thus be more easily isolated or painted as a know it all figure.

Free time is for Studying could also have the beneficial effect of ensuring we're better prepared for our first week of lessons this hopefully giving better First impressions with our teachers. I strongly oppose taking it with Class time is for building relationships however as that makes it easy for others to paint us as a teachers pet.

I feel like Puzzles and the other options can come later when our position in the house is more secure and people are less hostile. In addition I don't think any of the others have that great a synergy.

The puzzles can wait for a bit. For now, Malathorne is interesting, and is clearly aiming for some sort of united slytherin front to maintain a positive reputation in the school at large and get good grades. Helping him pull it off can only help.

As much as I want to start on the diary and Bill's puzzle, if the cliques start forming and we're still outside them, it's only going to get harder to make allies. Malathorne looks like he's pushing for a leadership position, we could use that.

As for class time, we don't have to show off how good we are by chasing after every opportunity and coming off like a teacher's pet. Lets take this chance to figure out the Slytherin dynamics before we make a poor decision or get stuck in with a crowd we want to avoid.

Shielding charm is just useful, especially if we have to defend ourselves from anyone who particularly dislikes our family.

Ah... Lockheart, the reason we have to get our defense teaching from a Horcrux if we want to get any if it at all. :V

Seriously I have to wonder what the hell Dumbledore was thinking to hire him on. Even if he did think those books were real (including the one where he claims to have cured lycantrophy mid-battle) the simplest of practical exams would show him out. The best I can come up with was that the board pressured him into it and he did not think he had the leverage to fight them.

What Burke is saying is kinda of Ironic, because that "Muggleborn" Slytherin Head Boy, Rose is talking about is likely Tom Riddle.
