Howl, Makai Knight! (Garo/Senran Kagura)

That would be kind of a dick move considering that Soul Metal burns the flesh of the untrained.

Plus I don't think we have enough spare Soul Metal lying around that we can just hand them out to outsiders.
Hm forgot that part.

I was thinking of one of those little chisels, but then again, unlikely to have one.

Anyway, it was something of a joke suggestion, mainly since given that they're protagonists of their respective series, they could probably muster up the willpower to at least lift it, which would potentially invalidate the attmempt to throw them off of it.

[x] Ask Senjuuro if he knows anything about Makai Knights that the Basics don't cover.

Might as well get to know our co-worker better while we're at it.

Also, there aren't any angels, but there is Gajari. We still don't know exactly what he is, only that he made the creation of Makai Knights possible and it's implied that he's very powerful. He also seems to be neutral on the conflict with Horrors, but making deals with him is possible.

I just found this and I'm already in love. Really hoping you treat the Senran Kagura universe with the seriousness that was always there but often ignored for the fanservice, but it's you so it'll be fine.

I do have a question though, in Senran the reason for the clothing damage was that it essentially functioned as Armor in taking hits for the girls, so does that not block the blood at all? Or is the otherworldly-ness of it able to seep through?

So, with a reaction as extreme as that it's pretty evident that Kirika had a rather traumatic run-in with a Horror in the past.
Think of the type of lifestyle Shinobi are likely to have with their professions, and you will realize they produce enough negativity to attract Horrors like honey with flies. All Ninja that survive as long as Kiriya (he's 40 years old) meet an Horror at least once in their life. Usually in the form of a possessed comrade.

Is there a way to destroy the Inga in humans or is it a part of their soul they can't do without? Because that seems like something we could do to keep some interesting people (like the evil ninjas) from running into a Gate and getting nommed. Because i really don't want to fight a Horror that is puppeting a ninja. I imagine gaining a ninjas advanced skills in manipulating this worlds Ki would give those monsters a significant boost in power.
Inga is something that is produced by negative emotions (fear, hate, sorrow, etc) or by doing evil actions (killing, cheating, torturing, etc). When it's strong enough it allows a Horror to possess you. To remove it (or just reduce it to harmless levels) you have to get rid of those negative emotions (usually by dealing with their cause) or turn over a new leaf and start being a good person. Another system is a purification ritual Makai Priests can perform (obligatory for Knights since they come into contact with Horrors very often) which removes the Inga...but if the cause isn't dealt with the Inga will start growing again.

And yes, Horror-possessed Ninja are very difficult opponents.

Also something dependent on the goodwill of our superiors (lol).
Yeah, lol. The Makai Order has humanity's best interests at heart, but they really cannot afford to be soft.

Plus I don't think we have enough spare Soul Metal lying around that we can just hand them out to outsiders.
You don't. The only piece of Soul Metal you have is the Kiba Sword.

Zaruga said that for Gajari "humans and Horrors are the same", so yes I guess it counts as neutral. I treat it like a Fae: non-human being with an alien mentality, and who always operate according to his own interests. So something to ignore unless you have no other option, because it always results in a headache.

I do have a question though, in Senran the reason for the clothing damage was that it essentially functioned as Armor in taking hits for the girls, so does that not block the blood at all? Or is the otherworldly-ness of it able to seep through?
Blood falling on them hardly qualifies as damage. I tend to think of Shinobi Turnover (yep, it's the official name) as forcefields, with the clothing damage representing how much juice is left into them. It works well to block physical damage, but beyond that....

Quick question:

Originally, the Kiba Armor was accessed by way of a necklace. How did the Makai Knights get the Kiba Sword? Was the necklace used in its creation?

Yes. Basically, they took the necklace, the armor and the sword that appeared with it and repurposed it to work like Garo and the way Kouga summons it. That was intentional.

Arc 2.1: This Is The Advanced Stuff
[X] Ask Senjuuro if he knows anything about Makai Knights that the Basics don't cover.

"Please forgive the disorder." Senjuuro requests as he leads me inside his workshop. Looking around I see most of the items Makai Priests possess: books with Makai lore, jars with magical reagents and tools to perform various rituals. "It's been a while since I had a visitor."

"It's no problem." Personally the room doesn't give me a feeling of being messy. "Do you live here alone?"

"No, I have two apprentices. But right now they're on a training trip." He sits down on a table with a contraption resting on it. "Take a seat."

"Thank you." When I too sit down I take a closer look at the object and finally recognize. "Is this a Goryuu?"

"Yes, the most recent model. Leo-sama is really a genius: thanks to those little guys I was able to deal with the common Horrors when it was just me." He begins to massage his neck with one hand. "Aah, but even so I'm starting to feel the years piling up. Now that you're here Tetsuya-san I hope I can finish to train my apprentices in peace before retiring. But to men like us that is wishful thinking."

"Nonsense: you more than deserve it. You can rely on me as much as you want." Just because we of the Makai Order are ready to lay down our lives it doesn't mean we shouldn't strive to survive. Helping a comrade obtaining their deserved rest after a life of hardship is also a worthy endeavor.

"Thank you Tetsuya-san." He replies with a smile. "You said you have questions for me?"

"Yes: I wanted to ask you what you can tell me about Makai Knights as a whole. The education and documents I was given don't cover everything, and I am curious."

"I see, I see. Where to begin..." He begins to ponder. "I suppose starting from the beginning would do. As you surely know the Makai Knights were created as an elite group of warriors by the Makai Priests when our efforts proved insufficient to deal with the most powerful Horrors. My predecessors were able to seal some of them, but often with horrifying losses. This changed with the invention of the Soul Metal."

"Invention?"

"Correct. Soul Metal don't exist naturally, but it is created from special plants. Plants that, ironically enough, are grown by a type of seed created by a Horror. The details are in the Madou Book of Origins and I have never read it, but what I know is that this specific Horror was sealed and the seeds it left behind were experimented on until a genius Makai Priest discovered the process to create Soul Metal. In his honor all Makai Armors have a wolf theme, though I don't know if it was due to his name, his symbol or something else."

"This is hilarious." Mikazuki chuckles. "A Horror itself, even if unwilling, provided its sworn enemies the tool to efficiently hunt and oppose its kind. Karma really is a bitch."

"Mikazuki's language aside, I agree on the irony of it." I nod. "Is this why Soul Metal burns the flesh of the untrained and is dangerous to use even for Knights?"

"Yes: a strong mind and a strong body are necessary to control Soul Metal and stop it from overwhelming you. That's why Soul Metal weapons have handles wrapped in other materials, to limit direct contact, and the armors have a time limit of 99.9 seconds. Very strong and experienced Makai Knights can extend the time limit, but in general it's more convenient to just dismiss the armor and wait a few minutes before summoning it again."

So if I can extend the time limit it means I have become a strong knight? Good to know...but I also have the feeling there is more to it. I'll have to ask a Knight who achieved this feat if they have any advice to give me, I don't want to mess this up.

"Next are Madou Tools like your Mikazuki, the Madogu. Their abilities, like Horror sensing, are made possible by the fact they are Horrors themselves."

""What?!""

Me and Mikazuki say at the same time. I look down at him. "Mikazuki, you are a Horror?"

"That's the first I heard of it either!"

"Not a Horror per se." Senjuuro hurries to explain. "But rather the spirit of a pacified one. While rare, it happens that a Horror is born without enmity towards humanity. While seen as errors by other Horrors, the Makai Order has since ancient times took and gave them a new existence as Madogu, providing them with a physical body and an inner balance of yin and yang ki to help them retain their rationality."

"So that's how I was born. Hey Tetsuya: if I ever awaken Horror instincts please cut me down. I don't want to end like those lame guys."

"Don't be ridiculous. If that happens I'll first search a way to purify you, and only cut you down if there is no other choice." I raise him to my eyes' level. "You're my partner Mikazuki, and I'll never abandon a comrade. No matter their origins."

"Aww, thank you Tetsuya. Then, if you even fall to darkness, I swear I'll kick you back into the light." He laughs. "As a figure of speech of course: I don't have legs!"

"My word, I rarely saw such a strong bond between a Knight and his Madogu, especially between two as young as you." Senjuuro smiles. "Treasure it. What else...Oh yes, something you will find very interesting Tetsuya-san. When a Knight slay his hundredth Horror, they face a trial."

"A trial?"

"I'm not privy to the specifics. But if the Knight passes it he gains a Madou Horse, powerful familiars that Knights can ride. They have the ability to travel through other realms and to enhance their rider's combat abilities. A Makai Knight's most powerful techniques can only be used when riding a Madou Horse. In a way, possessing one is a sure sign of a knight's growth in the proper direction."

This is very interesting. A horse to ride like the knights of old or the legendary cavalry of the Sengoku era? Ah, but surely the trial is very hard, not to mention I only killed a single Horror so far...

"You can do it Tetsuya." As if reading my thoughts Mikazuki quips. "If there is anyone who doubt our worth we'll show them, that you deserve the title of Makai Knight."

He's right. I already knew the path I chosen was a hard one, this changes nothing.

For the sake of my dream, I'll do my best!

Neat. At least the Anti-Horror Mecha's also used here as a stopgap measure.

And hopefully, no death flags were raised here.

What are the chances of another Makai Knight passing by Tetsuya's city?

I can almost hear Mikazuki's Social Link leveling up in the distance...

We could probably recall a few things during our first fight with a Horror that could have gone better. Time to rectify those.

@Alexander89

So how do you handle the time limit in combat since no Makai Knight can wear his armor for more than 99.9 seconds as it would consume them or turn into Lost Soul Beasts?

I understand there are exception when in a home realm of a Horror or any area with a particularly strong magical presence.

Edits: whoops missed it in the spoiler section of the armor. 5 turns of combat.

That Horror would be Zedom. He was interesting as a villain because while he was a Horror he want to rule not destroy and feed like his brethren. His seeds being able to grow Soul Metal might be more intentional than Mikazuki thinks because they can also be used to create Madou Horrors, who are more loyal, militant, and disciplined than normal Horrors with implications that Zedom wanted to replace normal Horrors with his own. An interesting concept that suffered from a lack of screen time in his season.

So he went: "Let's create a lifeform that not only can produce Horrors loyal to me and me only, but can also be used to seal other Horrors into chunks of metal. I'll use them to become king of this world and rule forever!"? Guy had some serious guts.

We finally see what the Makai Priests prepared for Tetsuya...

Zedom thinks everyone exists to serve him, especially Makai Knights because he feels that they owe their success to him. Like I said, an interesting idea for a Horror villain marred by a lack of screentime.

Zedom is different from other Horrors down to his design. Unlike other ancient Horrors he's mechanical in design and instead of using brute force he fights with a series blocks that he uses tactically. He was probably called the "Massacre General" for a reason.
