Hogwarts Sect of Witchcraft and Wizardry

I have a proposal for October. It's a meta one with a thinly veiled disguise, but hopefully that's okay, also because it makes sense in character. Basically, it's this: take advantage of the 99 roll we got for an October social action to try to counter (or at least put us on the path to countering) the 1 we got on our Dad one.

Rei doesn't suspect anything went wrong during her magical painting, so it would not be fair if we created a Write In that addressed the problem outright, but a Write In about her showing the locket to an Elder in order to ask how best to proceed on this interest of hers? I think that would be very reasonable. And it could potentially be a good way either to reveal to her (and us) the problem and possible solutions (fix, fix and fix), or at least to justify her worrying about and investigating it earlier than our next home visit. Worst case scenario, the action doesn't affect the Dad Problem and it just further one of our main goals (being a magical artist), instead.

So:
1) Keep the 99.
2) Create a reasonable Write In about showing the locket to an Elder (Flitwick?).
3) Make sure it gets the most votes out of all the social options.
4) Hope the critical success positively affects our past critical failure, mechanically and/or narratively.

What do you guys think?

I'm not a fan of that. If there's an art option given, I might push for that to be top, but blatantly meta votes like that rub me the wrong way.

It's kinda hard to know whether we'd have pushed for an art social to get the crit if we didn't know something fucky happened with the locket, but then I don't know what could be done about that unless Karf changes it so the social that gets the crit is chosen at random from the winning options?

I would define it as an in-character Write In that also has meta reasons behind it. It is not OoC, because it's a fact that both as a thread and as a character, one of our goals is to develop our abilities in the field of magical art. If that's all the Write In accomplishes, wouldn't we be happy about it, anyway?

Also, a lot of our social votes have been meta. Most of Harry's ones and Mandy's ones, at least some of Hermione's, and who knows which else.

Finally, like Karnax pointed out, there seems to be a disconnect between Divination pre-rolls and in-character actions, anyway, because it's not like Rei is aware of which social option gets the most votes. So the system is currently designed so that the decision of which action gets the highest roll is, after all, a meta decision.

So, all in all, I don't consider my proposal particularly different from what we've been doing all along, and from what we're expected to do, but maybe Karf's upcoming changes to the quest will end up making all this moot, anyway.

Hmm, well. Rei is an artsy person so in that regard I can consider using the 99 roll for art related stuff. Rei doesnt know if anything is wrong with the painting, so I don't see any justification for going to an Elder. I don't think we need any justification for making another portrait though.

The one thing that makes this slightly too meta for my tastes, is that Rei currently has very little reason to suspect that the drawing is magically significant, so she doesn't have a whole lot of a reason to bring it to an elder yet. If the Creevey cousin we got advice from initially is still here could we ask them? That would be more in keeping with what Rei knows about the situation while still probably alerting Rei to the problem

From the scene with him, I assumed he wouldn't be at Hogwarts, so that's why I proposed an Elder, but if he is, it would also make sense for Rei to go to him, so I'd be down for that.

On another note, since we're basically guaranteed to get 3+ new Meridians next turn, we can start thinking about what to slot in them, and in what order. People with access to programs will have more precise suggestions, as usual, and there might be QM changes affecting them on the horizon, but for now, I'd say:
1. The Rainbow Brush
2. The little towel that could
3. Whip Shear Technique
4. Chroma-caller Technique
5. Wing Floating technique

The two charms create new pool dice and successes, so they work best as first and second slot, respectively. Whip Shear should be next for the same reason, since it straight up creates more result dice for the other techniques to apply their bonuses to (Wing Floating, at least).

And if we get more than 3 Meridians, Light-eater would be up next (in slot 4), and Light-summoning last (slot 4 again).

I think we should aim to always have at least one more meridian than we actually need.

Ideally, yes (and even more than one wouldn't hurt), but deciding whether to use an action on meridians or on an actual subject should be based on the benefits they'd bring, and for next turn, that wouldn't be worth it compared to the Astronomy, Herbology, Charms and History lineup, in my opinion, which all give valuable information on top of mechanical advantages of varying/unknown level.

Hopefully we get some meridians naturally by rolling 100s on our training dice, too, but either way, we might be better off waiting until we have more things that need slotting, before we devote an action to opening them. If we do go for Astronomy and Charms in October, though, and if rituals/sites do require slots, then I could easily see us trying to open more meridians as early as November, given that we'd have 5+ unslotted things.

I guess we'll have to wait and see.

It's been quite a while since the last update, but I find myself returning to this thread often, so I wanted to take a moment to say that I really miss this quest.

It was such a unique and engaging story, with a great premise, an incredible system and fantastic writing! I loved how it managed to capture a sense of wonder, while exploring deeper themes about the nature of magic/Qi and its characters. It's incredible how vividly I remember the excitement before and after every update, which was always imaginative and inevitably provided chances for meaningful discussion and choices.

I hope you know how much your work was appreciated, @Karf , and I wish you will return to it, one day. Until then, these memories will have to do.

Thanks again for all the work that went into it, and thanks to everyone else who was part of the journey with me! ^^
