"HANDS OFF MY STUFF!" Fighting the Adventurer Menace

[X] Stay back and wait for the traps to soften them up.

We can do something if the house gets robbed in our absence, but we can't very much grow a second head, and I am tired of getting robbed by rogues on the street. Once was enough.

A teleportation spell is needed, like yesterday. Then we can build hidden chamber with nest egg of gold, weapons and supplies hidden away in case our house is really overrun and we just need to make quick, secure escape.

House expansion is also needed for more traps and such. Maybe making new allies among the townsfolk would also help. The weapon shop owner seems nice enough at least.

That saying never made sense to me, but yeah, we can decide whether to tell her later.

Mostly people who can't get much in the way of real work.
Well, we mostly built the traps to stop said people who couldn't get much in the way of real work from raiding the place for beer money, so it's not like there's much difference from before.

You know, except from the whole thing where they're dying now.

Wait, wouldn't 'trust but verify' involve telling her about the tunnel? Mostly confused about the wording there.
It basically means "I do not and will not think badly of you, but I will double-check anyway because I know I'm not a perfect judge of character and eventually someone is going to be a lot more traitorous than they seem", although there are a number of different perspectives on why you do it; it can also be about keeping up good habits and/or showing the other person you aren't stupid.
As an example, in real life I tend to be kinda insulted when someone "trusts" me and fails to go through the usual verifications or securities, because it means they might be willing to waive those securities when it counts.

So, basically don't trust them until later if/when they prove deserving of it. Got it. Mostly confuses me in that it's stating that one would act as if the person in question hasn't earned trust but for whatever reason is to be convinced they have it anyway.

It basically means "Treat them as if they are honest, but make sure to get independent verification just to be safe."

Professional skepticism, basically.

So effectively the same expenditure of resources as if you didn't trust them. It's the fact that there's no real difference on the part of the speaker between this and "not actually trusting them and having them checked out by some source you do trust" that sticks out to me. Which doesn't bother me, it's just that I see little effective difference between that and leaving the assumption that trust would need to be earned unsaid.

The difference is the emotions involved; most common forms of suspicion involve having prejudice towards the person's kind, or thinking that there is something wrong with them in particular that's worthy of hostility. The "trust, but verify" form of suspicion doesn't impact feelings of friendship or camaraderie, and someone using it would still be a bit shocked (emotionally) if the verification turned up "untrustworthy".
This emotional difference then informs how the truster responds, kinda like how you are trying to verify what's being voted on, but you aren't actually trusting that either of us have the right idea, which is what makes your response more flippant and dismissive, instead of just ambivalent or "I'll figure it out once I've seen more examples".

I mean, verifying that someone is on the up-and-up doesn't mean that you're not trusting them in other ways.

For example, if we didn't trust Lorena, we probably wouldn't be okay with her living in the same house as us, no? The fact that we're going to remain somewhat cautious about revealing where all our valuables are at until we're more familiar with her doesn't change the fact that we're showing rather significant amounts of trust already.

Admittedly, that's mostly because we've seen things from her veiwpoint OOC and she seems to be a fairly nice, reasonable person.

Trust issues aside, can I get people to consider my vote for a moment?

Lorena ultimately knows more than us about combat, adventurers, etc. She is much better placed than us to make good calls about when her intervention is best, especially as that may vary by circumstance.

By giving her the information and freedom she needs, we will allow her to be her most effective, while simultaneously establishing a business relationship where we actively defer to experts in their fields of expertise.

That is kind of important.

A good point is made. If she's guarding the house, she'd need to know where the traps are if only to not waste effort if someone's about to run right into one. And we are hiring her for this in particular, so we are assuming she knows what she's doing.

Don't want her getting killed because we forgot to mention the death-blades

Mmmm yeah.

Changed vote myself. Leaving her some flexibility about this should work the best.

Hopefully we can also learn how to become halfway competent in a fight from her. That has always been big flaw of ours.

After a few minutes of discussing where Lorena would go and when, along with discussing the locations of the traps, you

"Well, I need to get some of my things from the Inn I was staying at, but I'll be back in a little while" Lorena says.

"Alright. Take one of my spare keys so you can get in." You say as you hand her a key. "But if it gets stuck, knock on the door and wait for me. Whatever you do, don't force it. I can't afford to keep replacing that door, you know" You say, smiling.

"Yeah... and the scythe..." Lorena says as she looks at your front door.

"Hey, with that spell, you shouldn't be able to trigger any of my traps anyway" You reassure Lorena.

"Well... I'll be right back" She says. As she leaves, she looks at the scythe trap hanging above your door.

You and Taylor spend some more time talking before he heads back home. After Taylor leaves, Lorena is still not back yet. Though considering the size of the city, she could easily still be on her way back. There's still some time before you need to go to bed, so you can get one more thing done. And while you're still slightly intoxicated, you believe that you're still in good enough shape to do some work. And it probably not just the brandy talking.

City

[] Silver Shark Weapons Shop: Most of the weapons were sold to the store by adventurers, and most of them are bought by adventurers as well. Has a large, constantly changing stock.
[] Go to the Margery's General Store. It has little bit of everything. Some of it possibly stolen.
[] Go to the Howes Hardware: Store. It has all the parts you need to make some traps.
[] Go to the Sparking Mountain Magic Shop: From spellbooks, runes, to magical devices that anyone can use, this shop has it all.
[] The Hammer and Ales Tavern: You never know what, or who you'll find there. Also a good place to get wasted. Sometimes also has jobs from locals.
- [] Drink. Already too drunk.
- [] Look for work.
- [] Listen to local news. See if anyone has taken your job.
[] Exotic Imports: A place that sells exotic animals. Officially, they are meant to just be used as pets but some of them can be... aggressive.
[] Saint de la Salle Learning Center: A place for people to teach and learn. Can be used to train skills. Or to teach if you need some extra money.
[] The White Lily: A place where the rich and connected in society associate with each other. Could be a great place to make friends. Provided you can get in.
[] Find the Workshop. Maybe you could find some work. Or some tips.

For lack of anything better to be doing, really. Drunk and at home while waiting for someone to get back.
