"HANDS OFF MY STUFF!" Fighting the Adventurer Menace

We forgot to key Lorena into the traps but she dodged them anyway; she wasn't even offended that our invitation could have resulted in a scythe through the eye. Perhaps she could tell we forgot?
She didn't dodge shit.

Those traps are set to go off when someone forces the door, not when someone unauthorised enters.

Yuletide felicitations, by the way.

No wonder so many adventurers are thugs and thieves. That's about 3-4 times less than she could get teaching an unpopular magic class.

Let me tell you about the kinds of people who become adventurers.

1. Would be/former soldiers or city guards who can't take orders.

2. People who want to get rich. Whether it's finding treasure or being just that good at earning money.

3. Drifters who don't have any other skills.

4. People who want to spend their days exploring.

5. People who are on the run and need some ways to support themselves.

6. Independent criminals.

7. People who are trying to find out what they want out of life.

8. Mercenaries that don't/can't join a guild.

9. People who are young, angry, and have no other marketable skills.

Some of these people become rich, sought after adventurers. Most of these people end up dead, in jail, penniless vagabonds or too injured to fight. Those that don't were either too tough to kill, or smart enough to retire and find other work. For some, that other work is as bandits, thugs, or other kinds of criminals.

That doesn't really paint a pretty picture.

Anyway, Lorena falls under the 2nd category by her own admission, though probably the 7th as well and maybe the 9th. All in all, I'm kind of hoping that we're catching her at the tale end of her adventuring career, where she's looking for a way out. She's clearly bitter enough for it to seem that way.

Given how our pay would pretty much be pure wealth to her, seeing how we'd be providing both a place to stay and food, this would probably be a really good deal. Add in a chance of morally acceptable looting and it gets even better. The only real downside is the fact that it's still a pretty dangerous job, albeit she has the support of both a fortified location and a novice mage.

Though to give an answer, 450 Gold for a week is around the minimum that's considered respectable for someone around Lorena's skill level.
450 a week at minimum, huh?

I can't remember exactly what I calculated earlier, but I think when I crunched the numbers it came out to something like 'we can probably afford up to 1000 for her services'. That'd double the minimum acceptable payment, and then some.

That said, I'd be much more happy at 750, and if there's going to be any negotiation at all, we'll need to start out lower than that. On the plus side, we can throw in fringe benefits (Room and board, with 'Room' being whatever she needs it to be, within reason.)

So, given all that-

[X] Make a starting bid at 600 gold/week, plus room and board.

Lorena seems more like a battle mage, but I can't imagine she'd turn her nose up at us building a laboratory/library/etc. for her to use. Ideally, we'd be able to get some use out of them as well, but who knows really- And, of course, we'd probably want to build this underground, and well hidden, to avoid pulling in more adventurers in search of loot to sell off.

Negotiations
Lorena thinks about your offer. Her eyes are sharp, the fog caused by the brandy seems to dissappear instantly. She looks you up and down deciding what she's going to say.

"For the magic lessons, you have a deal." You both shake hands at that. " As for the job, 250 a day, and I get one day off a week. I won't ask to be paid on that day of course." Lorena counteroffers. "If someone tries to attack you or your house and I'm around, I'll still fight, but I just want a day to go into town, and actually enjoy my salary" Lorena explains. "Not much point of a job if I don't have time to spend the money after all, right?" She says, smiling.

Now, the negotiation was on. You do the quick math in your head. 250 * 6 days is..... 1500 Gold a week. 150 * 7 Days is......... 1050 Gold a week. So that means you'd pay 450 Gold a week. You could try to make a counter offer. She may just be trying to see how much she can get out of you. Though you don't want to risk negotiations breaking down either...

The room an board and commission were not mentioned.

How interested in them did she seem? Particularly did she seem like she would take us up on the room and board offer?

I'm thinking make a counteroffer accepting the payment, but reduce or remove the commission.

-[X] $200/day 6 days/week

It's a negotiation. We can't be too quick to accept it and honestly, we're not that desperate.

I just realized that we're only on day 15. It only took Def 2 weeks to turn her house into a literal death trap.

Oh, this trap won't hold them out forever. So we'll have to improve and keep improving until we are sitting atop high tower in diabolical fortress.

You're Hired!
"200 Gold" You say. "And that's my final offer!" You say, standing firm by your words.

Lorena thinks about your offer. She doesn't let any emotion show on her face. Eventually, she nods.

"That sounds good" She says. She gives you a warm smile. "We have a deal"

You both shake hands, sealing the deal.

"I'll need to get my things from the Inn where I'm staying, but I'll be back by tomorrow morning." She says.

"Sounds good. There's a spare room upstairs. Once you get your things, make yourself at home."

"Well, my big sister is finally rich enough to hire a bodyguard. Looks like she'd moving up in the world!" Taylor says, patting you on the back.

"I always knew I would move up in the world" You say, beaming almost as much as your brother "And... if you, Joshua, or Rose need anything, I'll be happy to provide"

"That's alright. We have everything we need at home" Taylor says. "Besides, it's not like we're just sitting around. Otto and Matilda have jobs in the City Guard, Valent has been working on that new inn down South for three months, Hans is hunting some local game. I don't think we're in danger of starving. At least not for a while."

"If you say so..." You say. "Just remember, that offer is open"

Lorena, waiting for you and your brother to finish, clears her throat. "If you're done, I have a two questions. One, let's say someone tries to break in. Do you want me to go out and try to kill them? Or do you want me to let your traps take care of them first?" She asks.

[] Stay back and wait for the traps to soften them up.
[] Go out and meet them head on.

"...and what about when you go into town?" Lorena asks. "If you go out into the city... well I've heard of people who are going to want to rob you. Eventually, they're going to want to kill you. To show that they can if nothing else."

"There are people who want to kill Def?" Taylor asks, shocked before turning to you. "What did you do?"

"There are rumors that she's got a stash of gold and armor here." Lorena says before you have a chance to. "Someone even hi- someone even tried to hire some guys I used to work with to rob Def. And since some adventurers are talking about how people get killed trying to come in here, it means that they're going to come here too, to succeed where others failed. Especially since you have whatever the adventurers had on them when they die" Lorena explains. You think back to your escape tunnel. You still have a lot of loot that you haven't gotten around to selling.

Though the last time you left your stash undefended, someone stole from it.

Still, that does raise the question of whether or not you should tell Lorena about your tunnel. If you do, she might get greedy, and try to take your stash for herself. But if things get really bad, and you both need to run, she should know about them.

[] Tell her about the tunnel.
[] Don't tell her.

[] Write in reason.

"So, you're saying that you should stay with Def when she goes into the city?" Taylor asks. He turns to look at you, and you see concern in his eyes.

"Unless she's rather I stay here and hold down the fort." Lorena says. "Granted, not that many people are talking about it. Mostly people who can't get much in the way of real work."

[] Lorena should come with me when I leave.
[] Lorena should stay at home and guard it.

NOTE: These can be changed as needed. This is just where Lorena will be by default.

[X] Stay back and wait for the traps to soften them up.
[X] Don't tell her.
-[X] Trust, but verify. For now, Def can evaluate Lorena more as a person as she just started the job. She can either tell her later or tell her only as the need arises.
[X] Lorena should come with me when I leave.

The home was so far only successfully raided because someone came in after the defenses were already discharged and things were broken up. Def's still questionable while not behind traps, so that's the risk.
