"Sure, sure!" You say. You take a bag of 500 Gold an d toss it to Lorena. She catches it mid-air. "Thank you! Thank you so much!"
Lorena takes a step backwards now that she has her pay "Alright" Lorena says. "I suppose this is goodb-"
"Wait!" You shout. "Why don't you come inside for a drink!"
"I don't know..." Lorena says.
"Come on! It's just one drink" Taylor says as he gestures for her to come into your home. "It'll be fun, and it'll just take two hours out of your day!"
Lorena thinks for a moment before sighing. "Just a quick drink"
"Alright!" You shout. "You won't regret it. Come on in!"
All three of you go inside, you taking the lead, Taylor following closely, and Lorena bringing up the rear. As she approaches your front door, she pauses for a moment. Finally, she turns sideways and goes through, avoiding going through the middle of the doorway.

"...and then, when I wake up about two hours later, the Commander says, 'Taylor, I think your soldiering career is over. What do you think?'" The three of you burst out laughing about Taylor's short lived career as a soldier. The bottle of brandy you've been drinking is halfway empty as the three of you have been swapping stories throughout the night. The night started on a much more somber note, as Taylor and Lorena talk about the kidnapping and Taylor's eventual rescue. To lighten the mood afterwards, you decided to tell a story about how two of your brothers, Otto and Steve, almost accidentally joined a cult. After that, Lorena chipped in with her story about how she once discovered that a Prince and Princess betrothed to each other frequented the same brothel.
And the night had gone on from there.
"You know, I never thought that someone could be run over a catapult" Lorena says, nursing her drink.
"Neither did I" Taylor says. But I think I still have the tire marks on my back to prove it. Do you want to see?" He says between chuckles.
"Please, for the sake of everyone here, keep your shirt on" You say, a large smile on your face. Thinking of a way to change the subject, you turn to Lorena"Hey, Lorena you've done a lot of things as an adventurer. What's the first job you ever took?"
"I..." Lorena starts. "I don't know..." She looks down into her drink, as if it would have a way out. "I don't remember."
"Come on, everyone remembers their first job" Taylor says. "Mine was as a soldier and we all know how that turned out. Def, what was your first job?"
"Fixing houses after hailstorms and bandit attacks" You say plainly. "It's good money
"And Def was just 15 when she started doing that." Taylor says. "You have to remember your first job. The stars in your eyes, the wonderlust, the desire for fame and fortune..." He looks into the distance with a dreamy expression on his face before downing his glass and filling it up again.
Lorena sighs, as if admitting defeat. "Alright, I'll tell you. I had to dig up a grave"
"...oh" Taylor says, looking down. Apparently, this isn't the answer he was expecting.
"...what?" You say
Lorena looks at the two of you. "A Count had recently died, and left his fortune to his vassels, his mistress, and his dog. He left his son 'The opportunity to rise to his rightful status on his own, as he did'" She rolls his eyes at this. "He also requested to be buried in all his jewelry. 100,000 Gold in armbands, medallions, rings, golden teeth a septer, and his crown. His son wanted me to sneak into the graveyard and dig all of it up for him" She looks angry for a moment before pouring the drink down her throat.
"His dog?" You say.
"...and you did it?" Taylor asks, as if he can't believe it. Honestly, you can believe it. It isn't the worst thing you've heard someone do for money, sadly.
"He was offering 7000 Gold for the job. I wasn't about to turn that down" Lorena says. "Only I never saw any of it. The bastard said to come back in a week after he sold all of it. He lost all of it gambling two days later..."
"Oh... I'm sorry about that..." You say.
Lorena makes a dismissive gesture. "Not like it's the last time that happened." She fills her glass full of brandy and points to you and Taylor. "If you ever decide to become adventurers, make sure you find a group you can trust. Never strike out on your own." She takes another sip of the brandy.
"Either everyone wants to cheat or rob you out of your pay, or you find other people and they're as useful as a box of hammers. If they don't decide to rob or cheat you."
"You really don't sound like you like adventuring much..." Taylor says. "Why do you keep doing it?"
Lorena sighs. "That's just it. I started because you can get rich. Get a mountain of gold you'll never be able to spend, the best gear money can't buy, fame and fortune and all that crap." Lorena takes another sip of her drink "After seven years, when I'm not a glorified thug for hire, I'm just scraping by..." She admits.
"You know..." You say. "If you're looking for a stable job, I'm actually looking to hire someone."
Lorena's eyes widen as she nearly chokes on her drink. Taylor pats her on the back while she coughs.
"Are you alright?" He asks, concerned.
"I..." She takes a deep breath in. "I'm sorry, it's just... sudden." She says, voice still raspy but she quickly works to regain her composure. "What were you thinking?"
"You see, I've built a nice home for myself here. I've put a lot of work into it. But people keep trying to take what's mine." You briefly think of the five bodies you've buried somewhere out in your fields. Or maybe it was six. You've lost count. "And since I've gotten some money, even more people are going to keep trying to steal from me. So, I'm thinking that you could be my bodyguard" You say.
"You... want to pay me to protect you?" Lorena says, raising an eyebrow.
"That's about it" You say. "I get the protection of a powerful mage, you get a steady job with someone who likes you" You say. "It's a win for everyone!"
Lorena mutters something under her breath as she thinks about your offer.
"Assuming I took the job, what would the pay be?"
