Gundam Crucible - [An AU Universal Century Quest]

I'm still, however, rather worried that we chose to go for this over a Unicorn-type.

I wasn't here for that particular vote, but I think this decision was likely more centered around to prevent Hathaway from dying, or being captured, or worse, doing something stupid, combined with getting Mafty, the Earth-based resistance to the Federation, on an equal playing field for the upcoming fight. Compared to 'just' getting one powerful MS and helping a half-insane pilot, this is arguably the mission that will have a more notable impact on the course of the war. Also, we kind have already rescued a powerful newtype and their MS, and even if the Sazabi isn't in great condition having Amuro back is way more valuable than even getting the Nu-Gundam back. Varying up mission types can be pretty good.

Ehh. I still perfer doing something about Dogatie or stopping the earth federation Newtype hunter team from getting a specialized full psychoframe gundam than this stupid earth mission. It's a matter of perspective. This mission? Some people I don't care about die, some extremists who are kind of idiots don't become our allies, and earth based missions get cancelled because the enemy has two much of an advantage in atmosphere combat. Personally the first one is an acceptable cost, the later two are honestly positives, as mafty will bite us in the ass at some point, and who wants to spend time on earth? It reeks of stinky earth diapers.

Now we probably have to let Pheonix hunt go sour in order to stop Dogatie before he can progress too far on the war crimes scenario. Taking it in it's final stage will only avert the worst outcome, which probably means that even if we take it then there is a good chance of partially successful warcrime being carried out in spite of Londo Bells interference.

Also, unicorn will still be available for another two picks, one of which probably has to be Dogatie as even Cybele doesn't want some poor defenceless colony to be needlessly dropped just to kill federation goons, especially if he ends up trying to use Cascadia. Like, no. Bad space racist. Leave that now uninhabited colony alone.

The mission your talking about is Pheonix hunt. Unicorn is a mission to probably investigate the alternative neo Zeon state, and their mobile super ship, and potentially form an alliance with them and discover any crazy shit going on behind the scene.

Second, Pheonix hunt is nothing to easily dismiss, given the time travel potential of a full Phychoframe gundam. Unfortunately we probably can't afford to take it if it means letting Dogatie progress too far along his warcrime plan to entirely avoid a heavy death toll, which I argue would have been a much better thing to prioritise over the acquisition of two mobile suits.

Stelaria said "a Unicorn-type", which implied to me they were talking about the Unicorn-type gundam Phoenix and the mission to collect, or destroy it, not mission Unicorn, which I didn't know was called that because I forgot what the other missions were. Really it's just unfortunate mission naming.
It's named that because their is a unicorn gundam flying in defense of that missions home base. Honestly, given every mission besides hathaway featured a unicorn gundam in some capacity, it should really be referred to as the Full Psychoftame mobile suit instead. Either way, the way things are shaking up we probably will drop it, and I definitely don't think the mobile we acquired is worth it.

At least we saved brights kid, and Cybele gets to form a negative opinion about earth born Eco Terrorists. Always nice to reinforce her biases. Also, we definitely earned more loyalty out of Lorelei.

Also, we definitely earned more loyalty out of Lorelei.
While I don't know enough about Gundam to contest your other points, this I violently disagree with. Lorelei is loyal to her ideals first and foremost, and nothing here has changed that. She won't murder Cybele in her sleep or give us a repeat performance of The Captain of the Gaw, but if she finds someone even more in line with her vision, and already part of a different faction, she will move on to them.

I feel like that's an understandable reading of Lorelei, but I think that we don't know enough about her to say she would just up and leave us like she did the Federation. Especially considering the difference in how we've treated her. Further, she seems to have formed a quick attachment to us, and it might just be the idealist in me, but I feel like if she did find someone more in tune with her ideals Lorelei would at least try to convince us to switch sides as well.

You see the problem here? It's that lorelei picked Cybele in the first place. She had her choice of Zion pilots, other teams, dogatie, waiting for someone else, contacting Judau with Newtype abilities, but she picked Cybele, why? Because most people lack a certain Ideal that she and Cybele share. Amuro Fangirl Worship. This gives Cybele an edge over most characters. Unless a Char Yandere Clone appears, we should be pretty safe in her having difficulty finding a suitable replacement for Cybele. I'm only have joking here.

I think Lorelei's actions with the Federation aren't exactly indicative of a 'true' personality of any sort. The Federation treats Newtypes like ass, and she's perceptive enough to understand that there's no future for her there, and take a leap of faith to get out.

By contrast we've treated her civily, and went out of our way to save her. Our command treats her with suspicion, but to our friends she's already one of us and Sicilia's already adopted her once she recieved enlightenment.
Even if she's going to ditch us for better prospects she'd not screw us in the process.

[This next vote is for the upcoming story arc, which will commence after a few updates following Cybele and friends aboard the Bellerophon. Note that options One or Two will reach their final stages if not chosen, and will only have one more opportunity to be chosen later on before they Bad End. The outcome of each one of course is better if you choose them now. The opportunity to choose it later on will only avoid a worst-case scenario.]
As to my other assertions, each mission has 3 "Stages" the earlier we take them the better of an outcome we can accomplish. for instance, we probably would have arrived to late to Ally with Zeon, if we'd taken the first newtype as our third mission, and too late to collect the Mobile armor if we had done it on our second one.

Right now we are in the second stage of Hathaways fall, which mean we don't get the original peace talks going, but we get a shot at the mobile suits still.

The problem is the next mission. Essentially, we have to pick between bad end for Pheonix Hunt, or letting Dogatie complete Stage two of his War Crimes agenda. If we complete Dogatie in stage 3, odds are good there is a death toll, or at least much better odds for partial success on Dogatie's end.

Chapter 40: Hathaway's Fall-Part 7
[X][Mega-Particle Cannon] Let the Feds take their prize. You'd rather not have all those enemy Mobile Suits turn their attention to you.

[X][AA Guns] Leave them inactive, it wouldn't be smart to antagonize people who'll be allies tomorrow.

It would be so easy. A switch here, a button press there, and you could send that Garuda down in flames. Would it be worth it, though? The Feds look like they're preparing to disengage, and honestly you're not sure your current forces could hold this airship if they assaulted you.

Damn it. Guess they're getting away. And you won't turn on the AA guns either, everyone fighting around you is a potential future ally. Just one Mobile Suit isn't worth burning those bridges…

You head back to the helm and reset the coordinates to the previously-agreed location. So far so good. Outside, the battle is still raging. Right in front of the bridge windows two Mobile Suits are fighting. A blue Zaku II with atmospheric jets strapped to the legs, and a GM Custom with similar modifications. It's a bit terrifying to see Mobile Suits fighting so close when there's only glass and thin steel protecting you, but you can't help but notice the ingenuity of both MS. You wouldn't have ever thought to try to make those Suits flight-capable, you would have just gotten Base Jabbers for-oh god the Zaku just fired its bazooka and missed.

You throw yourself to the ground as the rocket streaks past the bridge, impacting the Garuda somewhere farther back, shaking the whole transport. Idiot! That pilot is an idiot! Alarms go off all around you and the Garuda starts to tilt! You lunge for the helm control and bring up the systems readout. Port engines are all good, but one of the starboard engines is unresponsive! Fuck!

Putting more thrust into the remaining starboard engines slows the list, but the Garuda is simply over-weight now! It can't stay airborne unless it loses weight, and fast!

You lock the controls and stagger over to the comms station. Where's the open frequency setting… there! You grab the headset and jam your finger on the transmit button.

"Attention, everyone!" You shout into the mic, "The Garuda has sustained damage and needs to shed weight, now! All Mafty forces on top, get off! Everyone else, clear the way, unless you want the Feds to be the only winners in this absolute mess!"

To everyone's credit, you see the fighting stop, mostly. The Garuda's systems even indicate that it's periodically getting lighter. Guess the Mafty Suits up top are jumping off. But it's still not enough! If Sicilia and Lorelei were smart, they cleared out as well! But it's just not enough! You need to lose a lot of weight to stabilize, but what could you possibly-?

There's something.

"This is big enough to carry a Mobile Armor. How big is this Mobile Suit?" You curse as you climb on top of the MS container in the hangar. Getting to it was a bitch and a half, since the Garuda is listing 30 degrees to the right. The transport rattles and groans around you as the autopilot tries to keep it stable, but if you can't get this thing out of the hangar, it'll fail and then everything here goes straight to the bottom of the ocean! You won't let that happen!

Reaching an access hatch in the container, you throw it open and peer down into the darkness. That looks like a hatch for a Mobile Suit… you can't make out the overall design, but that's not important! You drop down on top and fumble for a switch. A satisfying click answers your probing hands, and the cockpit hatch hisses open. Score!

You drop straight down into the cockpit, the systems coming to life. Looks almost standard, but… well, you can tell quality when you see it. The hardware in here is a whole generation ahead of anything you've flown.

"Okay. Startup sequence, startup sequence…" The hatch closes, shutting out all the noise. Your murmurs are the only sound filling the cockpit. Onscreen, the Anaheim logo flashes. It fades out to display the designation of this Mobile Suit.

RX-105 Xi Gundam. Minovsky Flight System Mobile Suit.

"Minovsky?" You stare at the title. Holy shit, that thing goes on spaceships! Did Anaheim seriously cram one onto a Mobile Suit? You almost can't wait to take this thing out for a spin, if so!

The screen transitions, hopefully to the proper menus so that you can-Oh you've got to be kidding.

"First time setup." You repeat the words being displayed, "You want me to do first time setup?!"

Everything shudders, as if to emphasize that you're currently in a transport that's going to crash into the ocean at full speed unless you launch right fucking now.

[] Select all the System Defaults, you just need to get this thing in the air before the Garuda passes the point of no return!

[] Given that this Mobile Suit has apparently never been activated before, this might be indicative of a bigger problem with it. You need to spend at least a minimum of time reading the instructions.

[] Fuck this. Get back out and jettison the containers holding spare parts and optional equipment. You refuse to risk your life on untested hardware, but you'll save the Mobile Suit itself, at least.

Always RTFM

Let's be realistic, either we rush, or we dump, but we didn't use any of the options available to us to take control of the battlefeild, so we took a hit earlier than we might of, and don't have time for fancy bullshit. We play for time, odds are we lose something. Better to rush. Also, after Mr War Crimes is dealt with, if we get a chance to take a mission where we might optionally kick Anaheim's teeth in as collateral? We take it.

God I hope playing nice was worth it. The feds got away clean and we still lost the ship.

We haven't lost the ship yet. Cybele is hoping if she can drop some weight, either by piloting the mobile suit on it's own power or dropping the optional parts, she can restore balance and escort it to the rendezvous point. If that fails their is a chance she could save it with the minovsky if people cover her. The question is, if she takes her time to skim the manual, will it end up being to late to do more than grab a random crate of optional parts and escape before it hits the water.

We do not want to discover that controls have been inverted after crashing into the hangar wall.

So are we keeping the Xi, or is Hathaway getting it as canon? Do we want to stick with the Woundwort?

It's a psycommu suit. Unironic question, what fucking manual?

Hathaway will have to get the Xi if we want him to be remotely useful. The guy isn't a good pilot.

So to make Hathaway a remotely useful character, we pass on giving his mobile suit to say, Christina, and as a result, he appears in future missions...

I'm not seeing a win here, or even braking even. Unless the plan is to hope Hathaway is assigned to earth based missions and not take anymore of them? I could get behind both the not taking earth missions and not taking missions with Hathaway. Like, Cybele meeting Hathaway is optional right? We get to vote not to? Cause that would be a really nice conciliation prize if we lose the equipment.
