[15] take Nelliel up on the beds
"Thank you for the offer. I'll sleep much better in a bed than on the sand." You accept. "Unless you want to go to the human world, Tatsuki?"
She purses her lips and kicks at the pavers that serve as a floor in this part of . . . you think you heard it called Las Noches. "It's not like my apartment has working electricity any more, so sure."
Nelliel's smile widens a fraction of an inch. She's got a real smile, not just a good fake that wrinkles her cheeks but a smile where you can see simple joy in her eyes. The only person Ichigo knew that smiled like that regularly is Orihime. Maybe that stalker always hanging off her too. Tatsuki's too prone to pursed lips and scowls, as is he. Heh. The thought occurs to you that maybe the real reason Ichigo cut Tatsuki out of the supernatural stuff even after Orihime's brother came back as a sister-cidal ghost snake and almost killed her is that his party couldn't handle the combined angry bitchface of him, Uryuu, and her.
You chuckle as you take to your feet again. The kid needs to learn to laugh.
"Well let's go then. Where are we staying?"
"If you'll follow me."
As you walk through dramatic passage after dramatic windowed passage, Nelliel explains some of the layout of Las Noches. "There are ten towers surrounding the city. Each provides quarters for one of the ten Espada and our fraccion. Originally there were no towers, and we lived in the city itself, but there were . . . conflicts of personality."
She means that not all of the fancy hollows here are as professional as Shawlong or as nice as her. Got it.
"Is there a reason there are so many hallways?" Tatsuki asks, and your guide nods her head.
"Indeed there is. From the control room our lord and his allies can change the position and alignment of any of these hallways, trapping intruders in an endless maze where they can be directed into battles they have no hope of winning, or preventing them from finding anyone to kill at all. When not arranged for a purpose they fall back into a pattern that you'll learn quickly enough."
"Is that idea one of your boss'?" You frown at the word. You might be okay with Nelliel being your boss, but you and she both know that it's not serious.
"Lord Aizen has many ideas that have proven useful and enlightened, including the creation of arrancar. He promises an improvement on the process soon, too."
You don't know that word.
"Arrancar?" Tatsuki also doesn't know that word!
Nelliel clicks her tongue and turns left down an intersection, leading the two of you deeper into the city -you think. "Hollows have a natural progression. From nameless ones into gillian, into adjuchas, into vasto lorde in the oldest and most powerful beings. But all hollows hunger. They are empty creatures."
For a moment she pauses, but then the voluptuous woman continues to both walk and speak. "All hollows have a mask that hides their shame. When the mask of a powerful hollow is chipped away they have a chance to cling to life, and if they do they become more than they were. When we become arrancar the hunger does not vanish, but it does not threaten to consume us either. Most of us were probably adjuchas of varying powers, though I know of one that was a gillian. Our primera was a vasto lorde. I suppose your friend was adjuchas as well?"
"I don't know."
You graciously field the question Tatsuki shifted to you by reaching up and pulling your mask on. "I've still got mine, actually."
The Tercera stops and turns to face you, examining the mask curiously. "So you do, but you also have a blade?"
"Yeah." You decide to tell part of the truth. "I got it from a shinigami."
"And your mask . . . ?"
"It comes and goes. I don't know why and I don't care either. It just works."
"If you would prefer, I can take you to -no. That method is far too brutal and gives poor results. Lord Aizen has an item that does it much more effectively than a hammer and chisel, if you could wait a two days for him to return."
"What kinda results are we talking about here?"
Nelliel leans forward, staring into your eyes, and then turns and resumes taking you to your room. "You would be uglier."
Tatsuki snickers into her hand, now mostly healed as is the rest of her, and you ignore her with dignity, sweeping down the hallway after the older woman. Your friend, who doesn't have your bitching robes but is instead wearing the tattered remains of her pajamas.
It turns out that Nelliel lives in a section of Las Noches that makes you think this Aizen guy knows what a modern Japanese home looks like. Hardwood floor, windows, sliding panel doors, and a neutral color scheme. It's oddly restful. You and Tatsuki have a room prepared -one room with two beds- which must be what Pesche and Dondochakka went ahead to prepare.
There are even clothes laid out for you. Yours gets put aside on a chair, but Tatsuki ushers you out of the room while she changes and then you can go to sleep.
You sleep heavily, and if you dream you don't remember when you wake.
It's somewhere around ten in the morning, August 5th based on the artificial Sun shining light on you through the window. Assuming that nothing happens before the eighth that needs worrying about, but that Tatsuki needs to be ready to go as soon as the eighth begins, that leaves you about sixty hours free. You dial that back to forty-eight just to be sure that Urahara doesn't pull a fast one, finish the door to Soul Society early, and 'forget' to tell Tatsuki in time.
Has it really been five days since you climbed out of that hole? You feel stronger than ever as you roll out of bed, but that might just be the bracing air.
What do you want to do today? Obviously Tatsuki's going to need training, but what else?
[] Focus on training Tatsuki's armor
[] Help Tatsuki grow her spiritual power
[] Get help with your garganta
[] Try to develop another hollow power
[] Attempt to gain a shinigami power
[] Wander around Las Noches aimlessly
