Glory of the Emerald Empire (Legend of the 5 Rings Quest)

[x] Prepare immediately and head to the front gates.

You get out of bed and immediately slip into a robe. Enough time has been spent on other matters. Now is the day you return to your journey, and you cannot delay. That means you are going to have to prepare quickly.

You head to the baths. A servant is waiting there for you with towels and fresh bandages. He removes the old bandages and cleans your wound again. The injury has scabbed over nicely, but you can already tell it will leave a scar. But that doesn't bother you much. This will merely be one of the many you have gained in your life so far. A large one, true, but it is nothing to get upset about.

After you have washed yourself, you dry off and let the servant put yet more of that terrible smelling cream on your stomach. You're honestly getting more than a little tired of having this stuff smeared over your body, but it does seem to keep infection away. That makes the ordeal worth it, for infection has killed more soldiers than any blade. And that would be an awfully embarrassing way to die.

You dry off and let the servant wrap fresh bandages around your wound. Chances are good that you'll only need it for another day or so, so you'll not have to put up with this for very long. Crab Samurai tend to heal quickly, a useful talent considering the harshness of your duties.

You check out the window as you make your way back to your room. The sun has risen higher, and you frown. You don't have a lot of time, certainly not any for a proper breakfast. You'll have to eat on the road, then.

You put on some fresh clothes and don your armor, taking care when setting the breastplate to not aggravate the still healing gash beneath your bandages. The pain has reduced to a dull ache, but it's still best not to strain yourself too much until it has properly healed.

Your weapons in their proper place and your traveling pack in hand, you head downstairs and toward the gates. As you thought, the caravan is gathering there in the courtyard. The servants and Ashigaru are stowing things in the wagon and saddling the horses. Yasuki Goro is already sitting atop his, looking eager to be off.

Shasa, meanwhile, is overseeing the servants. She, too, looks ready to leave. Shirou, meanwhile is meditating next to the wagon with his eyes closed, ignoring the world around him.

"Good morning, Hiruma Sosuke-san," Bayushi Mataru says to you as you step out from the gates. His hands are bandaged and splinted, and you can tell he's having to restrain himself from wincing as he moves. "I was hoping to catch you before you left."

"Is that so?" you ask. "Please tell me what is on your mind, Bayushi Mataru-san."

The Bayushi Samurai frowns and looks to the side, and you get the feeling he is uncomfortable. He breathes deeply and exhales before bowing to you. It is a deep bow, and you can't help but be a little surprised at the suddenness of such a display.

"I wish to make amends," Mataru says, still bowing. "When you gave your battle cry during the fight with the Lost one, I was overtaken in the moment. But, in truth, I have no right to the words." He grimaces. "Hiruma Shasa-san is of your Clan, thus the call is only proper for her. Shirou-san is of a temple founded under the name of the son of Hida-kami, so he too has connection to your proclamation. I, however, do not. It is not my place, and I give my deepest apologies for my presumption. I can only hope this does not darken your view of me."

So...someone who's more familiar...is what Mataru did really that bad of a thing? I mean really, he stood with the Crab against the forces of Jigouku, thus making him a part of the Wall.

Possible suggestion if it's not a bad thing.

[] We of the Crab may be the wall, but a wall cares not where the stone that makes it comes from, only that it stands. In standing with us, you too were part of the wall.

Seem okay?

Yes and no. To claim you're part of a clan that you do not belong to is not kosher. It violates the unwritten social rules in place. Identification of your Clan and family is paramount.

At the same time, allowances are typically made for combat and other high stress situations (Or being drunk) and Crab aren't big on the social rules anyways.

Still as a rule you don't claim to be part of a clan not your own, it's arrogantly rude to both. As it implies that your own clan isn't good enough for you. (You filthy ingrate) and that your new Clan has to accept you because you're amazing, and the daimyo can't say no (You filthy egomaniac)

Anyhoo that's all a bit past us and while we have the etiquette to understand why Mataru fscked up. We also have the etiquette to get around that.

[x] Write in: Wait a moment to show we acknowledge he did wrong. "Apology accepted Bayushi-san"

Give a smile to show we hold no grudge.
"I enjoyed fighting alongside you, and hope we will again some day." Bow politely "Fortunes guide you Bayushi-san, farewell"

Only he DIDN'T identify as Crab. He identified himself as Wall. Crabs are Wall (and proud to be such), but Wall is NOT Crabs. From the POV of Sosuke? Nezumi are Wall. Ronins that are not Crab yet, but stand against enemy are Wall. Other clan reinforcements to hold The Wall in time of trouble are Wall. Anybody who decides to be part of Wall is Wall.

That said a warning that such declaration is more than simple words is a requirement. So if he is for example considering to continue fight Tainted, while maybe in Scorpion way by purging taint that infiltrated Empire? It's OK. But if it was just one moment thing? Now then said declaration would been insult... insult not to Crab, but to Wall. Though I'm not sure about this part really...

I know that, but Mataru doesn't, and that's why he's doing this. We could explain, but that makes things messy, or we can roll with it, I went with roll with it.

Thing is... I think that to Crab somebody apologizing for being part of the Wall is kinda insult in itself...

EDIT: Differences in clan psychology are such "nice" thing, aren't they? To many clans somebody intruding on they territory is insult. For Crab somebody else deciding to be Wall without being Crab is more of "more Wall? AWESOME!" and not insult to they capabilities because "there is always a place for more Wall". Well, depending on Crab really, but those that don't tend to become young heroes posthumously.

And such things stand between each and every clan out there. No wonder things are a mess in Empire.

Sosuke has Etiquette 3, I am assuming he is capable of realizing that Mataru is not trying to offend and he can accept it for what it is, not an insult but a legitimate attempt to be nice.

He's a Scorpion expecting him to be better is unfair.

I personally prefer this phrasing better. Admittedly, the only knowledge I have of L5R etiquette comes from half remembered Ruroni Kenshin episodes and the odd quote from TW: Shogun 2, so I could be very wrong on this, but eh.

Yeah, I like it.

Agreed. All those who set themselves against Jingoku have a claim of being the wall. The wall is only greater for him joining it as well.

Just want some confirmation on the wording from those more familiar with L5R etiquette for the vote proper.

[x] "Mataru-san, last night, you stood with me, and placed your life on the line in battle with the filth of the Shadowlands. In that battle, you were the wall - just as all of us are any time we stand to defend Rokugan against Jikogu. There is nothing to forgive. The Wall welcomes all stones."

That works.

This is beautifully worded. Indeed, the Crab are not as high when such little details are about, and well, everyone has the right to forget their place in the heat of battle.
