Glorious Shotgun Princess, Thread 3

Sorcery sacrifices are, basically, character development. The sacrifice should be something that holds you back. In Kasumi's case, it wasn't her intimacy towards Keiji- it was her grief at his passing. Once let go, it's not something she'll dwell on- she acknowledges he is dead, she knows he has been avenged, and she accepts that he is gone. She savors the memories but they do not rule her.

The more power, the more sacrifice. Sorcery is not a point-buy system. Sorcery is perceiving the universe through new eyes. Each sacrifice is something that held you back more. Kasumi is a Sidereal, and hence can get only to the Sapphire Circle- but she may let go of something greater for that. Her past, her laziness, her playfulness.

Adamant Circle- which she cannot get, and could only get if she were a Solar or Akuma- would be even more severe. Like her being a thief. Adamant Circle is basically "That man is dead and I remain."

Some people take this too literally. Hence the joking suggestion in the SNG game that our Twilight sacrifice his right arm and right leg for Sapphire circle, and his skin for Adamant Circle.

We are unsure if he will.

But still, Total Annihilation~
Shouldn't then one of Adorjan's sub-souls be one of the most/the most powerful sorcerers to have ever existed?

No, not if it wasn't done as a form of enlightenment. Shedding intimacies does not mean sacrifice. It's not just sacrifice, but five steps:

Humility
Tutelage
Journey
Fear
Sacrifice

Wait. I thought Adorjan, when she reformed from Adrian, did Enlighten herself and detached herself from attachments?

The next one will stop you.

For a certain value of "next", it certainly came true.

Also, poor Pria. No luck, that woman.

Hmm. This talk of Sorcery has me thinking.

What would logical things be for Shepard to Sacrifice in order to initiate into each Circle?

Her connection to the Alliance is probably one of them; it matters a great deal to her, I think, and it's also a family tradition. At the same time, it does limit her, both in that it leaves her under the command of others and in that it prevents her from being able to represent the interests of non-humans to the same degree as humans (not in a Cerberus way, in a "member of the human military" way).

Another sacrifice would be her tendency to always put herself in front in combat. Letting other people fight and die for her instead of leading the charge isn't really a Shepard thing, I think, but the fact is that she's not a Dawn. She's a Zenith. Her real power is in her charisma, her ability to take a motley crew of misfits and turn them into a well-oiled machine of righteousness, to bring an end to seemingly-irreconcilable conflicts, to convince somebody who was utterly indoctrinated to kill himself and die free. To really bring out her full potential, she has to learn to sit back and let others fight her battles for her if it isn't necessary for her to be in the thick of it.

For a third sacrifice...going to Creation for an extended period of time might actually qualify, given that aside from Garrus and Wrex all of her friends and family have normal mortal lifespans. Sacrificing the chance to ever see them again, or at the very least several decades in the prime of their lives, would be meaningful. Whether this counts as a worthwhile sacrifice depends on whether there are things she can do in Creation to improve herself that are simply impossible in the ME-verse, whether from lack of magical materials, the different rules of physics, or some other reason.

Not sure which Circle each of these sacrifices would be most appropriate for; I'd think the second one might best fit Solar Circle, since it's a pretty fundamental part of her personality that she'd be giving up, but I'm not enough of an expert on Exalted to be certain of that.

Being a Zenith doesn't stop you from also favoring a combat ability.

I know. I'm using it as shorthand here for "focuses on leadership" as opposed to "focuses on punching things". Something I believe is supported by the Caste Abilities and the Anima power, regardless of what additional abilities Shepard might have as Favored.

The zenith anima power aids in:
  • Tanking
  • Disposing of bodies
As Solars, they also get five favored abilities in addition to their caste abilities.

Their caste abilities also don't include War, which is the ability you use to run an army.

Hey, I was going to sacrifice part of his sanity for Sapphire Circle, then his limbs for Adamant! :p

Oh look, a perfect segway...

"Liara, lie to me. Tell me this is Pria's idea. Then I can punch her, and make her explode."

A light cough. "I won't lie to you. We brainstormed on this, together. She said your powers more focus on leadership than punching into and through things. So…well."

The lights switch on and Jane Shepard walks out. It is a testament to her poise and her experience over the past year and a half of being an Exalted that she does not stomp out like a mildly annoyed Krogan. She does, however, still grunt when the cameras flash and the VI-operated recording drones switch their lights on.

Stepping in front of the crowd, in front of the assembled reporters, fans, and other such, she narrows green eyes, puffs her chest up, and places her hands on the podium.

"Right, let's do this," she says, "Ladies, Gentlemen, Hanar, my name is Commander Jane Shepard. I know that there are quite a few questions after my apparent death, return, and subsequent…" She balls a fist and coughs. "Exploits on Illium and Eden Prime. So, I am taking time out today to answer any questions you may have. First question?"

(Yes, let's get our Zenith on. Q&A with Jane & other characters)

Endymion said:
"Commander Shepard there are reports of you flying through the air on Illium while glowing. I think I speak for all my viewers when I say, what the F*ck?"
"Those reports are erroneous. I was not flying. I was falling. With style. And bullshit magic."

"Commander Shepard, a question for the celebrity magazines! You're known for being particularly protective of your family, particularly your cousin Jenny Shepard. Has she ever dated seriously, and if so, what was your initial reaction and stance towards her partner?"

"Jenny has yet to seriously date. She has dated, but for some reason everyone tends to run away screaming. It may have to do with me, a shotgun, and the idle threat of what happens if you try a little too hard."

Commander Shepard, I have a question.

If a tree falls in the forest and nobody is around to hear it, and your mother bought sixteen watermelons, what is the tangential velocity of Gliese 412 A as it rotates around the galactic center?
"That is a trick questions, as Gliese 412 A is not in this galaxy, and I will fight you if you say otherwise."
Requiem_Jeer said:
"Commander Shepard! Is it true that you punched a Reaper to death?"
I have punched a Reaper destroyer to death, which is smaller. I have also punched a larger Reaper into unconsciousness, then climbed into it, fight the more powerful thing inside it, and then I made it burst into flames."

"Commander Shepard! Is it true that you have not only found the last Prothean, but that he's also the scariest fucking thing ever?"

Such as, for instance, the Cynis who for Sorcery sacrificed her shame.
Yes, a Cynis comes standard with shame. It's a shock, I know...

"Commander Shepard. John O'Connell from WTUX. Given the...unconventional abilities and skills of you and your teammates, who would you believe would be the most capable of defeating you in a stand-up fight? Or if they couldn't, who would last the longest against you?"

"Commander Sheppard, several cults have expressed a desire for you to use your popularity, connections, and 'bullshit magic' to take over one or more governments. Do you have any comments?"

"Commander Shepard? Octavian Parsus from the Legioni Magazine,Turian Hierarchy. Our edior-in-chief got today morning, just after you announced your press release, a text only e-mail from someone calling him- or herself 'The Dragon'. This person says he, or she, is a great fan of yours and the email is publically viewable on our website. The letter contains lewd references, is somehow contradictory on itself, even though our linguists are tearing their scales out to pinpoint which are the logically false statements, but there is also the interesting part saying that your, and I quote, 'predecessors were responsible for mutiliating half of my people, and unmaking the other half'. Please, can you confirm or deny the last bit, Commander?"

She coughs into her fist, 'Eclipseassholes'

"Commander Shephard? Khalisah Bint Sinan al-Jilani, Westerlund News. Speculation abounds about how your actions since your apparent 'death' have only been a harbinger for greater threats. On top of housing potentially maniacal AIs on the Normandy, what else can we expect beyond what the footage on Eden Prime has revealed?"
Shepard stares down Al-Jilani, narrowing her eyes. "That speculation is baseless and unnecessary. What threats we have are not based on what comes after me, but what I've found that already exist out there that we have chosen to ignore! We cannot simply blame the common boogeymen of AIs and aliens when very real threats of the Reapers are still out there."

(Shepard uses Taboo Inflicting Diatribe on Al-Jilani. +1 stunt)

(Roll(9): 1, 9, 4, 3, 5, 3, 5, 7, 8)
