I am aware that this is an AU. Kind of doubt that Laxus becoming a rebel will change... particularly much.

I can see that entire arc of him making Fairy Tail fight each other not happening because oh boy that's over the top, but the general attitude he had does not feel like something that would be changed.

We already know that Erza escaped the tower of heaven not long ago, after all. That implies that the basics of a character's story remain the same.

So I guess I can add to my argument that picking Laxus lets us get a bit of a confirmation for whether all (or at least many) characters have their basics unchanged.

I mean, he even got someone to go sit in the corner! He's clearly in charge of something. You're here on business too so it only makes sense to speak with the obvious employee.
Also old people should know things. Mainly things like where their boss is.

Any of these options because I want to make a friend roughly our age who we can keep in contact with even if we join a different guild.

I will point out that we're like 4 years older than all of these options if we go by the canon timeline, which we seem to be sticking mostly to with most of these characters, with a couple of exceptions. No Grey for one, since it seems like Ur hasn't used Iced Shell. Laxus should be the closest to our age, being I believe a year older than us. Plus, he was my primary reason for choosing this time period since he has the whole Raven Tail storyline that I felt was wasted potential. As such,

I think so too, since his whole issue started with Makarov kicking Ivan out of the guild without reallying telling Laxus why. I don't really see us changing that, so at best we can be a positive influence on him, if we manage to keep up with him anyway. Laxus is pretty strong even without Dragonslayer magic.

Also, I'm dreading having to choose a guild already. :D

We should go to Makarov, I think! It's really funny that Agnes just has no idea who he is. I wanna see how Makarov is gonna react. Also, it's very direct!

Well I did say we bounce between the guilds, partially because we use their quest boards, but it would also mean that we could make friends in all of them to call upon when things get tough. Plus we could just team up freely.

While I am sure that some are most certainly private, a lot of the quests seen in canon are pretty general. It seems to me that 99% of quests put out are probably sent to multiple guilds or just put out on a general broadcast to be sent from there.
 
Well, we know from a previous quest post that there ARE public quest boards, though they probably get fewer quests than those of the main guilds.

I still prefer to join a guild, preferably phantom lord (though I might change my mind depending on the next update).

We get a base of operation, access to a big cast of support characters, help with training, a few teammates (in time...), Likely some kind of rumour mill, Access to the s class trials once we get strong enough, hopefully the magical games will start sooner than in canon (as I said before they'd be a good alternative to OPEN WAR for Jose to prove his guild's superiority).

And I think there's a good chance of guild members getting some other kind of benefits.

Like, wouldn't some shops possibly offer discounts to some guilds? Maybe the guild offers a few starting item for free or at a lower price? Loans for starting equip? Library of arcane texts?

Fairy Tail had, for example, the fairy hills dormitory. Expensive (100.000 per month in canon) but it comes with the safety of living with a lot of strong mages/comrades.

Also access, if needed, to Porlyusica for healing. I don't think magical eyes like Erza's are that common after all.
