Fractured Fantasy: A CK2 Style Final Fantasy quest

I forget, is Walse one of the various FF5 civilizations that have the local Cid's booster hooked up to a Crystal?
Because those put enough strain on the Crystal that at least one just straight-up exploded without the villains even touching it.

Yes, but the booster (and the crystal, for that matter) were offsite in a tower north of town. We have no word on whether said tower is near or far from the town or even survived the Upheaval, whether Cid Previa is around and willing to build a new amplifier, or even whether anyone in town knows what it is — though if anyone in any of those places is going to figure it out on their own it's either Walse or Baron.

empire/Geshtalians hating magic could be an issue though yeah.
Ah, just so you know, Cocoon is the magic-hating civilization because in-universe propaganda says that only "evil barbarians from Pulse" use magic, while... Well, the Geshalian Empire doesn't, in fact, hate magic. They love magic! They love magic so much that their empire of conquest is built on "the only people who can use magic." To the point where the first (half) human they took in who could use magic was placed under mind control as a supersoldier under their command.

QM, you didn't show where Red XIII is?

Where is Red XIII, QM?

Where is he, QM?

WHERE IS MY SON, QM?
Okay, the lack of Nanaki, Yuffie and Vincent makes me worried about them, but I'll try to not assume the worst just yet.
One of my favorite things about doing this quest is going to sleep, and waking up the next day to an outporing of strategizing, lore researching, and the occasional outcry. Rest easy, Nanaki, Yuffie, and Vincent are all in the Quest. I just didn't want to reveal every single one of Aerith's friends yet. It would take all the mystery out of it.

Also, I keep forgetting to do this, but I'm thinking about making a "quest log" to help me, and everyone else, remember the side quests/missions as they come up, time out, expire, or are completed. Because there's kind of a lot of things going on at all times. You don't have to complete all of them obviously, it might not be possible for you to complete all of them. But you can give it your best try, can't you?

Although it will depend on what point of time the Empire is actually pulled from they can not only be Church of Yevon's natural enemy but also worst possible match up. If they're at the point in time where they are aware of Dead Espers leaving Magicite they might have already invented whatever spell or Tool Kefka Used to slaughter dozens of Espers during First Arc Finale

could be pretty useful depending on the specifics. may not be good to make things too formulaic (it'd mean losing a lot of the organicness/flexibility the quest has) but something that recaps what we've done/our current goals sounds handy, especially since it'd help people new to the quest or that are coming back to it after a while/in the event of any possible hiatuses.
there's also some stuff (like some lore reveals/that updated world map? i think that was unthreadmarked) that having better access to would be handy, maybe? not sure if it's relevant here, hard to say. (plus tbh some posts may benefit from not super visible, helps preserve mysteries/make the story more interesting and such)

of course this would also mean another thing to keep up, so probably not worth it if it takes way more time than it saves...

Been following this for a bit as a lurker, glad to see that Octopath found it's way in, wonder if anyone from the Bravely games are going to show up. On second thought, maybe it's for the best if they don't, there has not been a single console Bravely game to date where the fourth wall wasn't broken in some major way.
Eh, I guess Adventurer and their Companion could show up at some point without making that a risk. They're neat.

I did put the updated map on page 1 at the "setting" thread mark, but yeah maybe I should have also thread marked the map the first time I shared it.

Admittedly, I have a habit of forgetting to alter things on page 1 (rules, setting/map details, character stuff) when they change in the quest, so perhaps i should try to put more effort into thread marking those types of things.

For the quest log, maybe keep it as less of a formal "Quest; Do X thing to proceed" type log and just leave it as a "list of interests" type thing? Keep track of potential leads, threats, rumors, and so on without doing going into too much explicit detail about what can/should be done, so that part is up to you.

whoops. looks like great example from my end of how providing extra detail doesn't always help when people don't know it's there/don't think to check, lol.
(definitely still useful to have though, maps help picture things with way more specificity, while logs of information we've learned is handy for making informed choices/plans and avoid embarrassing mistakes/forgetful moments that the characters wouldn't have if they were the ones making the decision)

and a list of interests seems like a great way to achieve a quest log without railroading things yeah, that's a good way of phrasing things?

Adventure: LOVELESS and the Shinra Infiltration New
"That's… a lot of people." You couldn't help but feel impressed, and a little intimidated, as you peered through the curtains and saw the hundreds of audience members staring down at the stage.

"I know it can be nerve-wracking, but really don't let it get to you. You'll do great Aerith." Ruby encouraged.

You didn't answer, as your eyes trailed up to the Top Box, the most prestigious seat in the house. Today it is occupied by only three people.

Genesis, Angeal, and Sephiroth. The SOLDIER 1sts.

"Aerith?"

"I'm alright Ruby. Just, the jitters I suppose." Performing in front of Sephiroth terrifies you, but you'll be alright. You're in disguise, and you can't even sense JENOVA's presence. The chance of him starting a scene is miniscule.

"Everyone take your positions! Act 1 starts when the curtains rise!" Baku bellowed out. You quickly pulled away from the curtain, you wouldn't be appearing during the first act, but that didn't mean you could hang around on the stage.

'I hope the others are doing well…'

"Somehow I never expected you to look so… normal" Zidane admitted, looking at Shadow's uncovered face.

"What's that supposed to mean?" Shadow glared, his intimidating visage not hampered in the slightest by his lack of hood.

"Nothing bad! I just figured you'd have a glassy eye or a big scar or something." Zidane said glibly. He looked down and flexed his tail a few times. "Do you think I could get away with wrapping my tail around my waist like a belt? Stuffing it down my pants leg is super uncomfortable."

"I mean… it'll look a little weird but I've seen odder." Vaan put in his two gil.

"... You say that, but you run around in an open vest and metal armor. I don't trust your fashion sense for a second." Zidane sniped back playfully. After a moment of consideration, he painstakingly looped his tail through the loops on his pants where a belt would go. "Alright, suit check."

The three infiltrators had managed to 'acquire' several suits in the same style as the Turks uniform, as well as numerous articles of clothing that, when put together, looked almost indistinguishable from the Turks uniform. Dark suit and jacket, white undershirt, and sunglasses.

"We certainly look like Turks," Zidane commented, turning a critical eye over his companions. For a moment he considered asking Vaan to button his undershirt but… meh. He's seen a red-haired Turk running around with his chest out, so it clearly wasn't that important. "Time to see if they work."

No one got in their way as the trio of infiltrators walked to Shinra HQ, walked in the front door, flirted with the receptionist a bit (hey, she was cute!), and went into the elevator. The elevator opened on floor 36, where a nervous-looking man saw the three Turks inside and elected not to enter.

"This seems… easy."

"Don't say things like that." Zidane elbowed Vaan. "It's bad luck."

"What? That's just a superstition, isn't it? We'll be fine." Vaan stretched and put his arms behind his head as they walked out onto floor 60.

"Hey, newbies. I haven't seen you around before." Zidane shot Vaan a silent glare before turning around to face the voice.

The man had short blonde hair, a scar between his eyes, and a perpetual frown. He was wearing the Turk uniform but with the black coat replaced by his own white coat. At his belt was a blade, but rather than a normal handle, the handle was shaped like a pistol grip.

"Seifer Almsay, and you better not forget it. I'm the leader of the Turk's Disciplinary Committee. If you've been shirking your duties, I'd say you're in need of some discipline." Seifer stepped forward, the rest of his 'posse' cracking their knuckles.

The entire hall was silent, save for the performers. Not a single person dared to murmur or speak, make a joke or remark to a nearby friend. Everyone was enraptured by the production, watching in silent awe

Even Angeal, who cared less for the production than Genesis, couldn't tear his eyes away for longer than it took to blink.

Even Genesis, who had seen more versions of LOVELESS than he could count, was sure that this version would carve itself into his heart just as strongly as the first.

Even Sephiroth, who came only to appease Genesis, found his heart stirring from the sheer ethos of it all. This story of bonds, chains, and the terrible power of promises meant something, and for once he could understand why Genesis spoke so fondly of it.

There was no doubt in anyone's mind that when the play ended, there would be uproarious applause and calls for an encore.

"Hold it, we're not newbies, we've just been on a long-term mission." Zidane protested.

"What kind of mission would they send a pipsqueak like you on?"

"Intel gathering, what else? And we've got some really important intel to get to the research department, so if you could let us through-" Zidane tried to brush past Seifer, only for the man to step in his way.

"See, I don't really care about that. I care about this little group of wannabes trying to act like they own the place." He loomed over Zidane, who was more annoyed than frightened.

"Look we're not trying to start a fight or anything, we're just trying to do our jobs." Vaan tried to calm the situation down.

"And I'm trying to do mine, keep your little chicken-wusses in line." Seifer declared.

"It's about the princess they have in the research department," Zidane said.

"The pretty one?" One of Seifer's thugs piped up.

"... Oh yeah she looks downright regal, locked in that cage. You know what, buzz off. I'm done with you idiots for the day." Seifer shooed away the thugs around him, all of whom took the dismissal without much hesitance.

"I'll let you deliver your 'oh so important' info to the doctors. I need to pay that knight prick a visit too and rattle his cage a bit. But once you're done, meet me at the sparring room. If you don't show up, that's just proof you're a chicken wuss."

Vaan looked ready to punch Seifer, but Zidane quickly stilled him with a sharp elbow. "Play along."

[Seifer lets you pass, but insists on coming along]
Seifer strutted his way to the executive elevator and got inside. "Well, hurry up!"

The infiltrators all shared a quick glance, this certainly wasn't in the plan. But they could hardly back out now, could they? So the three of them walked inside and Shadow used his stolen keycard to unlock the elevator.

Luckily, there was one benefit to having Seifer with them. "Move it." The scientists scattered before Seifer, letting them walk through the sea of labcoats unimpeded.

"Hold up, you don't have permission to be here." One guard tried to step in.

"Do I look like I need your permission to get through here?" Seifer blustered.

After a brief standoff, the guard sighed and stepped aside. "I hope that knight beats you again."

"What was that?"

"Nothing."

Seifer seethed even as he walked past the man and entered the deeper part of the lab. "Add him to the list."

"Huh?" Vaan asked.

"The guard who gave me cheek. Add him to the list."

"Uh… alright," Vaan replied, not really understanding what he meant.

With the matter settled, Seifer led them further into the lab, past all kinds of advanced machinery. Cells and tanks that most of them could hardly comprehend, but painted a rather unflattering picture of what time in the lab meant.

Though he was outwardly calm, Zidane was starting to get antsy. They haven't hurt Garnet, have they? Surely they wouldn't…

They turned one final corner to what looked like a normal cell block, but with large metal doors instead of bars. "Hey, Failure Knight, Prissy Princess! You've got some company." Seifer tapped the metal door with his blade, creating a loud clanging sound.

Steiner (sans armor. He looked odd without it) immediately smashed his face against the window. "You again?! Some 'knight' you are! Taking pleasure in bothering a princess and her retainer! Do you need me to teach you a lesson agai-"

He fell silent, gaping in surprise at Zidane standing behind the Turk. The young thief quickly made a 'shut up' gesture, but it was too late.

"ZIDANE! You rapscallion! You scoundrel! How dare you join this band of ruffians! Have you come to mock me?! To steal Garnet away once more?! I will not allow it!" He started slamming against the door, not that it was doing any good.

"Zidane…?" Garnet seemed stunned as if she never expected to see Zidane again.

"... Just once rusty. I need you to keep your mouth shut just once." Zidane rubbed his temples.

"So you know him… you're familiar." Seifer grinned and turned his blade towards the infiltrators, who stepped back and raised their own. "What is this, a rescue mission? Well, I'm afraid it ends here. I can take all three of you on, so I suggest you give up now and I won't hurt you… much."

Zidane's mind was racing, trying to find a quick way out. Seifer was probably tough, if he had a custom weapon and a spot in the Turks, not to mention a fight favored him. Which is why Zidane didn't plan on fighting him.

If there's one thing Zidane had learned on the walk upstairs, it's that Seifer was arrogant, the kind of arrogance that needed an outlet, someone to blame, someone to bully.

Zidane could work with that.

"Fine, we'll go quietly." Zidane raised his hands, "But not because I'm scared of you. It's because I'm scared of him." He pointed somewhere behind Seifer.

Seifer, poor insecure Seifer, incensed at the disrespect sighed and turned around. "I don't need you to watch out for me Shin-" There was no one behind him.

He recognized the trick too slowly and turned back to the intruders in time to catch Zidane's boot to the head. The gunblade clattered harmlessly to the ground as the Turk fell back, darkness creeping in from the edges of his vision.

'Zidane... you're going on the list. On the very top...'

Shadow silently handled the normal guard in the corner and turned to the nearby console, trying to find the way to open the mechanical doors.

"In case it wasn't obvious, I'm here to bust you guys out of here!" Zidane shouted, causing Steiner to fumble his next charge against the door. "But if I'm going to get you out, I need you to shut it, and follow my lead, alright?"

For a moment it looked like he might keep shouting before he swallowed his pride. "Zidane, I thank you most sincerely for saving the princess and I will allow you to command me while we are still in danger, but no further! I am my own man and a knight of Alexandria! Do not think to test me!"

The young thief paused, before shrugging "Close enough. How's the door coming along Shadow?"

"I believe this should do it…" A hiss emanated from the doors, and both of them opened automatically.

"Zidane!" Garnet immediately tackle-hugged the young thief. "You really came looking for me."

"Of course I did, I promised to look out for you. I'm sorry it took so long."

"If you're here… is Master Vivi here as well?" Steiner asked, brightening up a bit.

The touching reunion was interrupted by the sound of shattering ceramic. A scientist on the other end of the room stared in horror at the open cells and quickly dashed away.

"Sorry, we'll have time to talk later. There's no point being sneaky, just follow my lead!" Zidane took off at a sprint, with the rest of the gang bringing up the rear.

They were halfway to the elevator when the alarm went off, throwing the scientists and guards into a panic. There wasn't enough time for them to mount a defense or make any real attempt to stop the infiltrators. The one guard brave enough to try was swiftly dispatched by a shuriken from Shadow and a body slam from Vaan.

"Everyone pile in!" Getting the entire group to fit into the executive elevator was… difficult to say the least, but no one was willing to separate. Steiner had Shadow's elbow in his chest, Vaan was wriggling uncomfortably pressed against the wall, and Garnet glared at Zidane who lifted his hands and said "It was an accident."

When they reached the 60th floor everyone quickly scrambled out, immediately being spotted by a group of guards. Zidane quickly composed himself. "We're moving them downstairs for safety until the security breach can be contained."
[Auto pass due to Perfect disguise!]
"Sir! Would you like us to assist in guarding them?"

"Unnecessary. Assist in containing the breach instead." Shadow said bluntly.

"U-um. right you are sir!" The guards saluted and went into the executive elevator.

"Stay close together, act like we're escorting you," Zidane instructed, getting Steiner and Garnet to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with Vaan and Shadow. "One more elevator ride and we're home free."

Shinigami perked up as he heard the sound of the elevator ping. It was finally showtime. "Well, well, well. You've done a hell of a job, but I'm afraid that ends here."

The orange-haired Turk exhaled a smoke ring, standing completely open and unafraid in front of the infiltrators, still crammed into the public elevator. One went to draw a knife from its sheathe.

"Oh, I wouldn't do that if I were you. The only reason I haven't blown you all the kingdom come is because I wouldn't want to harm the lovely lady Garnet." Shinigami smirked and palmed a grenade, while a pair of Turks took aim with their guns. "Now, if you surrender right now, nobody has to get hurt."

For a moment they only shuffled in place, trying to gauge their odds and clearly not liking their chances. But the boy in front, part reckless and part brave, drew a pair of short knives and charged forward.

"Hold your fire," Shin commanded his men. He grabbed the kid's wrist and twisted it out of the way, burying his elbow into his chest. The thief stumbled back, aiming a wild slice that got nowhere near enough to hit Shinigami.

It became clear as early as the second exchange that the kid was no martial artist. The knives gave him pitiful range, and every time he came close enough to stab Shin either knocked him back or twisted out of the way. A blow to the back sent the kid sprawling, but he rolled and quickly jumped up, nursing a bruise.

"C'mon kid, just give it up." Rather than listen, he lunged forward, knife and body fully extended for a stab.

It skimmed harmlessly off Shinigami's belt buckle, and Shin retaliated by throwing him. The kid hit the ground and rolled, coming to a stop face down.

"Zidane!"

"Seriously, I'd rather not have to kill you in front of your girlfriend. So give up." Shin urged. Instead, Zidane started to rise again… and tossed a small, cylindrical object at Shinigami's feet, and another at his fellow Turks.

Duel with Legend (Intrigue)
34 vs 1
Automatic Critical Success!
[Used 2 Stolen Flash Grenades to beat a hasty retreat!]
"GRENADE!" The gunmen yelled.

The entire world burned white as the flashbang went off, causing Shinigami to cry out and squeeze his eyes shut as a reflex. Before he could even think about recovering, someone slammed into him and knocked him to the ground.

By the time Shinigami marshaled the strength to stand and open his eyes, the intruders were already out of sight, with no hint as to where they had gone. The Turk's gunmen were still on the ground, trying to recover.

Shin would keep looking of course. He had to gather up a team and go into the city, looking for the intruders and the escaped test subjects. But somehow… Shin got the feeling that he wouldn't find them, no matter how hard he looked.

"Zidane huh…" Shinigami chuckled to himself, lighting up a new cigar. "Hell of a ballsy move there kid. Can't help but respect it."

The entire theatre erupted with applause, countless rows of people standing up and giving Tantalus a standing ovation, beyond what you had ever expected to hear.

"Good job Aerith!" Ruby cheered, having joined the cast on stage. "How does it feel?"

"Really gratifying, and a little terrifying!" You reply, eliciting a laugh from the actress.

"This is one of the things that makes acting worth it. Bask in the praise, you earned it!"

For the next several minutes, several groups of people come down to congratulate the cast and crew. In turn, Tantalus thanks them for the support, and occasional donation, chatting amicably with everyone. You do your best to follow their lead, being kind and gracious as the praise rolls in.

"Marvelous! Simply marvelous!" Genesis Rapsados himself walks up to the stage smiling, and truly smiling not the little smirk he gives for propaganda pieces. "I must say, this is the greatest production of LOVELESS I've seen in a long time. I must know, who wrote this version of LOVELESS?"

"Ah, well. We got the idea from the original poem and play, but as you can see we put our own spin on it. I suppose you might call it the Tantalus edition." Baku said modestly, though he was grinning wide with pride.

"I adore the way you expanded on the promise, making it both a source of strength and a weight around the trio's neck-"

Genesis and Baku kept talking, but you couldn't help but feel your eyes drawn to Sephiroth, and the rest of the world seemed to fall away.

Your killer was standing right in front of you. How could you have been so stupid? He was so close...

Your heart crawled into your throat, your breaths coming in short, ragged gasps. The room swayed as a vague, static-like sound started buzzing in your ears. What was he waiting for? Why hadn't he attacked yet? Or maybe he already had, there was a sharp pain in your chest, one that made it even harder to breathe.

A vague blue and blonde shape swam into view, someone grabbed your shoulder and shook it. Your leg slid out from under you and you fell down…

Down…

Down…

Critical Failure!
[Aerith faints]
Picking colors to be different enough to identify easily and either actually readable or representative of the character (Flame for Genesis because he loves fire, International for Shinigami because, doesn't that just sound like something to apply to a spy?)

Anywho, expect the resolution in a day or two. You can handle a little cliffhanger now, can't you?

Garnet: #9A2A2A Garnet
Steiner: #d891ef Bright Lilac
Seifer: #e4d00a Citrine
Shinigami: #ff4f00 International Orange
Genesis: #e25822 Flame
Sephiroth: #bfc1c2 Silver Sand
Angeal: #00bfff Deep Sky Blue

Well, there are worse things we could have rolled a 1 on at least. Since it looks like at least there wasn't any suspicion of Aerith yet, and fainting after an intense performance isn't entirely exceptional, so long as the rest of Tantalus is able to pass it off as exhaustion and tension from the performance.

Very dramatic though! The bonus from Aerith was even what pushed it over the edge to maximum success!

The rescue team got absurdly lucky with that natural 1. Otherwise, Shinigami ( who I cannot track down for the life of me, what are they from? ) was probably going to give them all an incredibly nasty beating. Hopefully Aerith fainting at the end can be attributed to nerves and tension after having put on an absolutely incredible show.

You would fall for that shit, wouldn't you, Seifer.

Anyways, a little pair of Nat 1s certainly spice things up. Especially when one of those let Zidane pull some incredible shit with Steal. It's some good stuff when your enemies are packed to the gills with gizmos and gadgets!

The other Nat 1 is, uh. Shall we say, less favourable, but as others have said, hopefully explainable to our theatre connoisseur and his companions.

Oh right I forgot. So, there's a character from FF7 Before Crisis simply referred to as "The Legendary Turk" who you get to name and personify. They have a title, Death God Of The Battlefield, which is born from their ability to singlehandedly dismantle army units using nothing more than their strength and cunning. Death God is a common translation for Shinigami from Japanese Mythology, and since Legend doesn't have a real name, I decided to make his code name "Shinigami"

He actually had a pretty decent chance of finding Aerith or stopping the infiltration team, but you guys got lucky, lucky lucky. I would be keeping this closer to the chest but... well you've already seen him. And beaten him. Sorta.

Dang right we got lucky, just makes me feel even more confident about my analysis of the kind of fight he could have given Zidane, Shadow, Van, Garnet, and Steiner! We uh... probably wouldn't have been winning that one, nope. Well, here's hoping that Shinra doesn't send out folks to try and recapture Garnet and Steiner, or at least not folks on his level of capability.
Seifer being unhappy is... probably fine for the moment. Seifer really just has some things to work through, no matter what world he's in.

Welp, I think we can excuse Aerith there at the end, considering the pressure. Otherwise, this was a near perfect mission!

Let's get this one straight then. This was her first official performance, she learned there were VIPs in the audience, and maybe we can throw in anemia or something just to sell the fainting. Combined with the excellent performance, we can pass it off as her being on the edge the entire time being mindful.not to make any mistakes.

Man I don't blame Aerith at all for freaking out at Sephiroth being right there and I'm shocked/impressed she was even able to keep her composure at first.

At the least the play made sure the infiltration team did not run into any of the 1st Class Solders which could have gone really badly.

Hm, was thinking about the 'We are the storm that is approaching' feat. Who do we have that might qualify
Squall
Cloud
Lightning
Snow

are the obvious four, but if family names count, and Highwind can count as weather, there's a few more
Cid Highwind:
Kain Highwind:
Aranea Highwind

Raine Loire: Added for completion but non-combatant and also dead.
Tonitrus Lucis Caelum: Also long dead, but first name means 'thunder'

Reading this knowing a nat 1 was coming was something else. Everytime a roll came up i thought: "oh no, is it now? Is it here were things go wrong?" It really raised the tension.
While Aerith fainting can be a problem, since now all eyes are upon her, there was many worse places where that 1 could have popped up. I think it shouldn't be too hard to explain it away as being nervous from the play.
Now all that's left is to get away from the city and back to Dalmasca all in one piece.

Someone's gonna say she was just really nervous about being in the presence of the Soldier 1st Class, Sephiroth, since we're really impressed. We're gonna wake up and get a nice autographed note from him wishing us a swift recovery.

Oh damn that was intense scene. And Of course Seifer had to be the new Turk and now Zidane's on his list. I almost thought that the Nat 1 was referring to absolute luck Infiltration team had against Shinigami but damn... Aerith fainting made for a nice natural cliffhanger.

Although now that I think of it... Since we're dealing with Crisis Core Sephirot before the revelation left him wide open for Jenova... Do we have any chance of averting that? Probably unlikely but something to keep in mind.

Was looking though the achivment In progress we have yesterday and I assume we have cleared this one now.
Star Performer: Perform in front of a large crowd.
But when I looked through the achievements in progress I also saw these two.
The One I Love Is…: Untangle Aerith's messy love life.
I Love You And Everyone!: Fulfill multiple romance options.
And those looks fun to try and reach😏
