Fractured Fantasy: A CK2 Style Final Fantasy quest

hm, even if having a moral person/someone we know (probably, assuming no timeline shenanigans) present in the war is an opportunity, this seems like it's going to be a very awkward meeting

come to think about it, cloud's reunitation was pretty disastrous too right? so fingers crossed this won't become a trend lol

(i'm in favour of healer organatisations since the things we can do are more interesting, though theming and branding may a concern, so we'll have to see what our options are as they develop? plus if there's some way we can get away with making it more suitable for other tasks/actions that definitely sounds worthwhile)

Yeah, I feel like 'organization' doesn't mean we have to go full 'profit motivated org', we could make something like MSF, work as a non profit, and channel the money into various ways of healing. Or perhaps more as a Guild/Union for healers of all kind. An organization that's focused more on looking after its members education, support, etc. rather than looking after money.

Edit: Actually, I like the latter better. In a way, while SHINRA is all about selfishness and heedless ambition, the church of Yevon is in many ways the opposite: with individuals being raised as martyrs, pressurized for the common good, and in many ways Cocoon and it's L'cie take that even further. So an organization that goes 'hey, yes, we like healing, but as an org, our first job is to make sure that our healers and curse breakers are safe, well educated and equipped, and aren't sacrificial lambs' sounds great.

That fact that Aerith, like Yuna, was in a way fated to become a martyr herself might make her even more willing to make sure that other healers are going to be kept safe.

... Holy crap. Marlene!? A l'cie?! Now?! That's messed up. Well, uh... I guess as Barret says, "there ain't no gettin' off this train we on."

Fang and Cid Raines running a rebellion behind the scenes is very cool, though. Fingers crossed they can keep it up, and I hope they'll be willing to work with us now that we got into the good graces of the refugees! ((Also, I'll admit, I really want to see Cid Raines become a playable hero here? He was kinda my MVP back when I played Record Keeper...))

Hrmm...it's good to see the XIII crew is...mostly in good hands but yeesh war is going to be awkward huh?

Still it's good to see other people fighting the good fight, not sure how we'll do it but we should link up with them when we get the chance.

Very good, very good, you even remembered one of my favorite characters in the whole XIII series, despite his severely limited appearances. Amodar is a real one folks and I would have loved to have a man with the machine gun in XIII's party, but sadly it was not meant to be. Also, I honestly forgot about Lightning's gravity manipulator thing, it's a shame she uses it in the prologue and then never again because it's really, really cool. Although later the gang uses a bunch of stolen gravity grenades for a similar purpose.

... Cocoon technology is so cool, it's a shame the society as a whole is deeply evil.

Anyway, I believe you have sent the Guardian Corps and Cavalry on an eventual collision course, which is always handy. But I do want to give you a more tangible reward, so you may either ask 1 Cocoon/L'Cie related question or +15 to the first action Aerith and co take involving Cocoon

Turn 8: Meddling in Midgar New
"The Prima Vista isn't the fastest airship, but she's lovely isn't she?" Ruby said as she gave you the tour. Zidane was going to give you a tour, but Ruby insisted on coming along and (very casually) deflecting all of his flirts.

"I noticed you use the deck as the stage. You're not going to bring the airship into Midgar, are you?" You asked

"Oh I'd love to, but apparently the air around Midgar doesn't play nice with mist engines. A short fly-through might be fine but parking there for a show... we'll have to park a few miles away, but don't you worry hon, we'll perform one way or another."

Your conversation is interrupted by a rustling sound, which makes Ruby frown and creep closer to a stack of stage props. She quietly grabbed the tarp over the stack, and gave it a strong tug.

The stack toppled over with a loud clatter, causing the stowaway inside to shriek in surprise as she tumbled forward, landing flat on her face. It took you a moment to recognize the brown bodice and flowy orange skirt. "You're the dancer from Cleyra!"

"Oww…" she complained, slowly sitting up and rubbing her head.

"What's going on here?" Baku demanded, stomping down the stairs. Marcus and Blank were right behind him, while Zidane and Cinna walked in from further belowdecks.

"We've got a cute little stowaway," Ruby reported.

The dancer laughed nervously. "Um… I can explain?"

"Go on then. Start with your name, and why you're here." Baku pressed, glaring at her.

She gulped nervously. "My name is Agnea and I'm here because I had a dream about you!" She turned to look at you.

"… What?" You tilt your head in confusion.

"Oh gosh, that probably sounds weird. I didn't mean it like that, it wasn't a weird dream it was a scary dream. You weren't the scary part of the dream though-"

"Sweetie, can you do me a favor and calm down? None of us are gonna hurt you." Ruby soothed. Agnea took a deep breath and calmed a little. "There's a good lass, now start from the beginning."

Agnea turned back to you "I saw you at the dance in Cleyra, in the crowd. I didn't think anything of it at the time, I was busy dancing at the festival. Afterwards, I was tired so I went to bed early, and that night I had a dream. There was this… thing that called itself Chaos."

"You saw it too?" You blurt out in surprise.

Agnea nodded "I saw you and your friends standing in his way. I felt like I had stumbled into one of those stories about Aelfric defending the world from demons. After I woke up that morning I tried to find you, but you had already left. So… I went looking for you. I want to help."

"That's great and all, how did you get on the ship!?" Baku asked.

"Oh, Zidane helped me."

The young thief, who had been trying to sneak away froze and turned to face Baku, who was glaring at him. "Oh, you know me. Saw a pretty girl in trouble and had to help her out."

"So Zidane… you're telling me that you allowed a random girl to tag along on our very important and confidential mission… because you wanted to flirt with her." Baku had his arms crossed, the perfect picture of a stern father.

Zidane hesitated for a few moments, clearly trying to find a way to spin his answer before he bluntly said, "Yes."

Baku punched Zidane in the mouth.

Turning away from the violence, you hold out your hand. "Let's try this again. I'm Aerith Gainsborough, it's nice to meet you."

"Agnea Bristarni." She took your hand and gave you a firm shake. "So um… what are we doing exactly?"

"The short version: Shinra is holding a princess captive, and Tantalus is going to break her out."

Agnea stared at you. "I… think I need the long story."

"In that case, how about we move this discussion to my room? I'll pour us some tea, it'll be lovely." Ruby suggested.

[Agnea joined the party!]

You had your suspicions after you bumped into Zack, but you couldn't confirm them until now. Part of you hoped you were wrong, part of you hoped you were right, and it turns out your suspicions were correct.

This wasn't Midgar as you remembered it

To be more precise, this wasn't Midgar as you left it. This was Midgar as it was several years ago. The Sector 7 Plate was still intact, the city streets were cleaner, and the decay and expanding piles of trash in the slums had yet to grow uncontrollably. Shinra still had 3 shining SOLDIER 1sts, Angeal, Genesis and…

Him.

That's not to say it was exactly how you remembered it back then either. The crowds were different, a mix of people from your world and those from others. Most members of Tantalus stood out like sore thumbs, everyone with non-human features did.

"I've secured a date for our performance," Baku announced, after only a day in Midgar. "We're being sponsored by… what's his face? Angel?"

"Angeal." You correct.

"Right, we're being sponsored by Angeal, who wants us to put on LOVELESS for one of his buddies, Genius or something"

"Genesis."

"Whatever. We have a few weeks to prepare. So I better not catch any of you slacking!"

Aerith (4 Actions)

(Note: Actions that take place in public, have a chance to attract the attention of Shinra)
[] Visit Wall Market: You know this little slice of criminality still existed even when you were a kid. As you learned during your time with Cloud, as long as you carry a weapon and stick to yourself, you'll be fine. Maybe you can get some shopping done and keep an eye on the rumor mill. (Reward: Information on the conditions in Wall Market and Midgar as a whole. The opportunity to buy illicit goods.)
[] Visit Sector 5: It's risky. There's every chance the Turks are already there looking for you, or have staked out the places you used to frequent. But you really want to check on Mom, and the Sector 5 Church is the only place you've really been able to commune with the planet in Midgar (Reward: Visit your childhood home. A chance to clear your head and commune with the planet)
[] Watch the Local News: Now, you really shouldn't trust everything Shinra says, but getting a view of what's happening inside could be valuable. (Reward: Learn the "Shinra-approved" version of the local news.)
[] Prepare for the Play: You've only really been on stage once before, so you have some experience but not a lot of experience. Baku point blank refused to let you participate unless you attended acting boot camp. [Note: Cannot be taken with "Really Prepare for the Play"] (Reward: Aerith is allowed to perform on stage)
[] Really Prepare for the Play: If you want to impress, you'll need to put in the work. Acting lessons, rehearsals, footwork, makeup, the whole package. It will be a lot of work, but if you can wow the crowd it might be worth it. [Note: Costs 2 actions. Cannot be taken with "Prepare for the Play"] (Reward: Aerith is allowed to perform on stage, and receives an additional +20 to her roll.)
[] Create a disguise: If the Turks are looking for you, they'll have an easy time finding you in public spaces, or places you frequent. Luckily Tantalus has plenty of stuff for you to use. Costumes, cosmetics, hair dye and more. (Reward: Reduce the chances that Aerith is spotted or identified by Shinra)
[] Coach the Infiltration team: You've already given them the gist of what they'll be facing, but more coaching never hurt. (Reward: Add Aerith's Intrigue modifier to the Infiltration Team's initial rolls.)

Shadow

[] Bodyguard Aerith: Not technically in your mission statement but, it's something to consider. The client can't pay if she's been kidnapped or worse. (Reward: Shadow will take steps to hide and protect Aerith from Shinra. Adding his Intrigue to attempts to hide, and his Martial to attempts to fight)
[] Make Some Contacts: Wall Market sounds… interesting. Career criminals often have need of a hatchet man, and you're one of the best. (Reward: Make contacts in Wall Market)
[] Spy on Shinra: This is a different environment than what you're used to, and Aerith has gone to great lengths to illustrate the danger of the Turks. Still, more information can only be helpful. (Reward: Observe Shinra, potentially gleaning useful information)

Agnea

[] Path Action: Entreat: Dancing is your life, your passion, and your career path. Any bar or inn with a stage should be willing to let you dance, and if you do it well, you'll earn some coin! (Reward: Funds, depending on how high Agnea rolls)
[] Path Action: Allure: It's honestly kind of incredible what you can get away with by being a charming young dancer. You don't like relying on this ability, but if it's for a good cause... (Reward: Angea charms a Shinra employee, granting some kind of bonus on the infiltration)
[] Dancing Lessons: LOVELESS isn't a play that really has any dancing or singing in it, but there are still scenes where footwork is important, and your voice has to carry during a play. Maybe some of your exercises will help? (Reward: Agnea applies her Diplomacy to the performance roll)

Hey so, remember how Crystals traditionally pick teams of 4? Here's your fourth! I thought it would be extremely funny if you kept missing Angea for one reason or another but, the dice let her find you. I'll get her character sheet to you when I have a chance.

There will be a Moratorium for 24 hours, use this time to plan and discuss.

Oh we've got a lot to think about.

I think Agnea is better off using Allure or helping with the play, we have other systems in place for Funds management.

Shadow… I'm honestly kind of leaning against having him make contacts. Even if they'd be very useful… do we really want Don Corneo to be able to hire someone competent?

Agnea's character sheet has been added to the list, finding a picture for her was rough, but I managed.

I'm going to try and set the vote to automatically open tomorrow. I haven't fiddled with the controls too much but I think I know how. Edit: There we go, that wasn't so hard.

Question, if I were Aeris, and Sector 7 was whole, checking on the 7th Heaven bar to see if Tifa, Marlene and Barret are there might be in order. We know Barret and Marlene aren't there of course, but Aerith doesn't. Would that be an actual action, or can that be done in between?

Also, I suppose I see now what is 'non canon' in the story. Alright if I go back and edit that part out?

hmm, tough decision here. i think the main decision is whether to focus on staying in and practicing (boosts the mission the most, more actions since there's no point to a disguise+we get an achievement) or to go out (more AP expensive to set up the outfit so can't really fit practice in, but gets shinies).

currently leaning more towards staying in (practice X2, coaching the infiltration team more) since it has the most mechanical effect+we get to join in the play(we can get intel elsewhere, plus it goes out of date over time) though that leaves an action open. for that last one, we could maybe watch the news (possibly relevant to get base information with which to update our info, and it's pretty safe?), create a disguise (maybe a little pointless, but completely safe and possibly useful for the performance itself/if something goes wrong) or maybe visiting our house (risky, they're probably known to the turks, but it's the sort of thing we can't get elsewhere)

if going out, i still want to coach the team more (buffing the rolls is big) but we probs cant' fit in joining the performance so would miss that achievement. action 2 would be to get a disguise and with remaining two actions out and about perhaps visit our house (probably emotionally significant) or the church (we could probably go this anywhere really, but it may give us info if anything's up magically with Shinra specifically? which could be good)

could try and combine these two ideas and coach+just train once for the performance, but that might be a waste? since if we're sorting out the disguise to safely go places (such as Aerith's house, which is the most unique opportunity) there'd only be one action left...

shadow/Agnea's assignment depends on the above choice. if Aerith's going out then shadow covering her may be more effective than working on a disguise (assuming we're not going somewhere with serious surveilence), but at the same time he could just go out to investigate himself and reduce the need for us to take risks and do it.
Agnea probably doesn't need to entreat (eyes on the prize lol, can get funds anywhere) though it's a tossup whether we want to boost the performance rolls or fish for more info (both have appeal. maybe make up for what we're lacking most in?)

Agnea's character sheet has been added to the list, finding a picture for her was rough, but I managed.
there's no rush for this, but i remember you said you'd add seltzer's character sheet and you might have forgotten it? fingers crossed it's already written and just needs to be uploaded

(Reward: Information on the conditions in Wall Market and Midgar as a whole. The opportunity to buy illicit goods.)

This feels very low priority.

[] Visit Mom's House: It's risky. There's every chance the Turks are still there, or already there. But you really want to check on Mom. (Reward: Visit your childhood home.)

This one I feel is high priority, even if it's risky. Elmyra might be worried sick about us, and Aerith is probably worried about her as well.

[] Visit the Church: Your head always feels clearest at the church, it's the only spot in town where you can clearly hear the planet, and maybe you could ask some questions. Although if the Turks see you, they may have some questions of their own… (Reward: A chance to clear your head and commune with the planet)

This one could be important. A good place to get a bit more of an idea what we have to do here.

[] Watch the Local News: Now, you really shouldn't trust everything Shinra says, but getting a view of what's happening inside could be valuable. (Reward: Learn the "Shinra-approved" version of the local news.)

Low priority as well.

Baku point blank refused to let you participate unless you attended acting boot camp. [Note: Cannot be taken with "Really Prepare for the Play"] (Reward: Aerith is allowed to perform on stage)

I mean, we came here to take part in the play right? Let's do it.

Eh, an action for a +20 seems more than I'm willing to pay when there's various other things that feel a lot more important.

If we're gonna visit Aerith old home and/or the church, then this feels like it would be pretty important. But, if we get Shadow to cover for us, perhaps we can go without?

[] Coach the Infiltration team: You've already given them the gist of what they'll be facing, but more coaching never hurt. (Reward: Add Aerith's Intrigue modifier to the Infiltration Team's initial rolls.)

This one is the main reason that we're here, so feels important to boost it.

So, of the ones I'm considering there's
Visit Home
Visit Church
Prepare for the play
Create a Disguise (if we don't pick this, definitely have Shadow bodyguard us)
Coach infiltration team

there's no rush for this, but i remember you said you'd add seltzer's character sheet and you might have forgotten it? fingers crossed it's already written and just needs to be uploaded
His sheet is almost done, but I gave him the lowest priority since we wouldn't be seeing him again until the mission in Midgar is over. As opposed to Vaan, Agnea, and Zidane who are all in the here and now.

… also coming up with ways to represent his gambler powers in a system that already runs on dice is proving more difficult than expected.

Yeah sorry I couldn't tell you about that sooner, I just didn't want to play my hand too quickly about Crisis Core-ish Era Midgar.

Also, forgetting important landmarks in a FF game? Couldn't be me. If I add or adjust anything in the vote I'll make sure to do it before the vote starts.

generally agree with what you're saying shogeton, any thoughts on hero actions? some can make up for things aerith's missing for instance? though sadly i don't think shadow's good enough to stop any Shinra forces looking at us and positively IDing us/getting a picture of us for use later, which is the real concern

that's smart, yeah. definitely don't want to rush you, just wanted to make sure it wasn't forgotten (since other stuff was added, so there was less chance of it being delayed?)

Shinra has surveillance cameras and I think authentication up to facial recognition? We are definitely at the top of their database, along with the rest of Avalanche, at least the ones who had made a scene prior to 7 Proper like Berret.

Obviously we need a fake mustache to blend in.

Can I just say, I really appreciate you going out and writing about the stuff that's happening all the way over in Cocoon?

That would have been funny.
But... Wow. I... Wow, hey! We have a 4th hero now! And apparently all along, she just kept missing us? XD
Is she from Octopath 2?

Could key effects off something like "if the unmodified roll is Odd or Even" or "if [1 or 2]/[some other single-digit number range] is part of the unmodified roll?" Excuse me, game design is a hobby of mine.

Honestly, I'm kind of tempted to say "ditch the ID'ing"/let the dice fall where they may in regards to IDing, though uh, that may be playing with fire some, and is probably motivated because my choice of Aerith's actions would probably be:
[] Visit Mom's House
- On an emotional level, I feel like this is a high priority for Aerith.
[] Really Prepare for the Play
- I don't want to see Garnet and Steiner in there. Let's do everything we can to get them out!
[] Coach the Infiltration team
- This is what we're here for, after all!

Though...
[] Dancing Lessons (Reward: Agnea applies her Diplomacy to the performance roll)
Agnea has that nice-looking 22 Diplomacy we can burn for this instead. In which case, if we go with this, I'm a little more keen to have Aerith just do basic play preparations and work on a disguise.

And whatever the case is, I'm leaning towards Spy on Shinra for Shadow's action.

... @griffinlw What if we don't prepare for the play? Will Aerith just be wandering Midgar while the play is going on?

She also have this trait:

Aspiring Star: Your big dream is to one day be a star, to make your mother proud. You've only just started and you have a long way to go, but that's okay. [+10 to checks to perform on stage. May be improved through repeated performance.]

Which probably means that she would apply a bonus of +32 to the performance roll.

Yeah, especially with Agnea there to help, I feel that putting two actions in prepping for the play is overkill. We're likely not going to head to Midgar all that often for a while, and the Church is one of the best places for Aerith to communicate with Planet

Can I just say, I really appreciate you going out and writing about the stuff that's happening all the way over in Cocoon?

What can I say, give me a chance to write for Nora and I give you several thousand total words in a fever dream.

Writing for the Guardian Corps was also kinda neat, especially with the stuff kinda left to the side mechanically for Lightning and narratively for Amodar. I actually forgot he had some Opinions:tm: about PSICOM's handling of civilians until I double-checked his wiki page to brush up because ain't no way I'm redownloading 50+ gigs of game.

... @griffinlw What if we don't prepare for the play? Will Aerith just be wandering Midgar while the play is going on?
My default assumption was that she would be a stagehand. So she wouldn't be in the play, she would be in the back handing people props, helping everyone get in and out of costume, helping to move furniture and stuff like that.

The thing is, Tantalus is gonna have to skedaddle real quick once the play is over, it is planned to be a "distraction" for the actual rescue, so Aerith probably can't be out doing stuff during the play, unless that stuff is "helping the infiltration team."
