Resident lurker here, I felt the need to vote
[X] Wait for them to ask you to dance again
[X] Perhaps find a moment to perform a song with Remilia. Your piano and her violin.

It probably isn't the best idea, but I feel like the fluff would be nice, as well as give people a chance to Flan isn't always so scary.

Party XV - Dancing
[X] Wait for them to ask you to dance again.

You shake your head - Remilia doesn't look distressed, and you are currently lending your time to Ilya and Lulu. You look around for your other guests - Megane and Zest are sitting next to each other, watching the performance from a higher vantage, but Agito is back with Vita. A flimsy memory rises to the surface: Fate talking with Signum about Agito working with her instead of Zest due to improved compatibility. Right, Agito wanted to stay with Zest out of loyalty and to help protect him, but she would be a lot more effective with Signum, so she's probably talking with Vita about that. Nanoha and Fate are sitting with Verossa and his catgirl acquaintances, enjoying themselves. Tohsaka is alone - apparently alone - at a table, face down in her arms. And Illya is back in the entry hall with Miyu and the rest of her group, where Remilia's simulacrum is keeping order. Your eyes rise from the dance to the balcony where Patchouli sits with her guests - two satori, a cat youkai, and a bird youkai - with Koakuma attending them. There's nothing you have to do, no pressing matters demanding your attention, so you sigh contentedly and make yourself a bit more comfortable as you focus again on the performance, memorizing movements and the general pattern.

After the youkai dance comes a choreographed Japanese dance, which you and Ilya sit out, although Lulu joins in, dancing with Zest. Two more dances follow, an Italian country dance that you simply watch and talk about, and then a trojak that you dance with both Ilya and Lulu. Then one of the more somber Spanish court dances, and then a fast, twirling Balkan dance, and then another, slower Italian dance. You dance more with Ilya than with Lulu - she seems to have a lot more stamina for some reason, although she may just be cheating with magic. It doesn't really matter, though, because when you aren't dancing it lets you pamper and snuggle with Lulu.

"Ah~. So many dances!" You shake your head and look around for Meiling, but fortunately she's much too far to hear Lulu's remark. You've barely scratched the surface of European dances, and you haven't even delved into any particular country's traditional styles. Adding Chinese dances would just add even more variety.

"You just haven't had enough exposure to other cultures, Lulu," Ilya says as she accepts a mug from Sella. Lulu takes one from Leysritt with a nod of thanks, and sighs contentedly after a long swallow. When she opens her eyes, though, her expression is a bit melancholic, and you clear your throat.

"Happy times, okay? If you start talking about stuff from before then I'm going to go dance with Sakuya." A mostly idle threat, as the chief maid appears to be giving a dressing down to a particularly insouciant red-headed maid. You chuckle and shake your head as Kyouko shakes her hand after Sakuya raps it with the crossguard of a knife. Knowing the Chief Maid, she probably hit one of the really painful spots that are hard to get just to prove a point. Of course, now you're curious about what Kyouko did …. Ilya looks thoughtful and taps her lips.

"… How about dancing with Satsuki instead?" Lulu perks up, and Satsuki blushes, and waves her hands and shakes her head.

"No, nono, I'm - I can't - I - Flandre-sama!" You giggle and nod.

"Fine, fine; we'll wait until there's an easy dance I can - oh, this one's good! Come on!" You pull your maid along with you, ignoring her protests, as the music turns to an English waltz. Once you get to the dance floor you turn to face her and walk backwards, still pulling her. "It's fine, Satsuki, don't worry. It's easier than killing a night-demon." For some reason, that doesn't inspire her the way you thought it would, but her face loses its excited color and she nods. "Now, we hold hands like this, and you put your hand on my shoulder. There, now just watch me and I'll tell you how to move, okay?" She nods and you begin walking her through the movements. Halfway through the dance she finally relaxes a bit more and her performance improves significantly.

"I - I'm sorry I'm not that good -" You cluck your tongue at her.

"You're better than most of the others right now. Although it is true that this is an English waltz, not a proper waltz." She cocks her head, not quite throwing off her movements, but enough for you to realize she's still far too stiff.

"What's a proper waltz like?" You grin.

"About twice as fast as this." She actually stops when you say that, and it takes your pull to get her moving again. "We aren't moving that fast anyway, Satsuki. Even for humans."

"I know, but … with all these people around I just feel nervous." You pull her a little closer, into a proper closed position, and try to give her a reassuring hug. Again, you're not quite sure how much good it does, but when you pull away slightly so she's more comfortable she smiles back at you. "Thank you, Flandre-sama." You grin back. When the music ends, you bow and she curtsies, and you catch the various people around trying to imitate you with varying degrees of success. You shake your head when you see Aya bow and her partner curtsy - the black-winged tengu man she and Hatate had been talking with earlier. Oh, well; when it comes down to it, not much separates a curtsy from a scrape. You pat Satsuki's hand.

"You did very well, Satsuki. Now, let's go back, hm?" She nods and follows you back to the table, and Ilya and Lulu as well as the maids applaud your performance. Satsuki blushes again and tries to hide behind Leysritt as you sit down. Ilya and Lulu practically fall over you.

"Hmm … that seems like it would be fun~" You gently bop Ilya's nose.

"… Would it be bad manners to sneak away for a bit?" You frown at Lulu and she hunches her shoulders defensively.

"We just want to listen to you play for a bit, away from all the people and crowds. And it'll probably be a while before everything ends, right?" You nod - probably a few more hours before the party officially ends, although you should be free to leave a bit before then. As for leaving now … well, you could probably get away with it, especially since you're not the host ….

What do you do?

[ ] Just for a bit, to play a few songs, but then you should come back up.
- [ ] Make sure Sakuya knows where you're going.

[ ] Leave the party and get changed into more casual clothes.
- [ ] Make sure Sakuya knows where you're going.

[ ] Much as you'd like to, Lulu and Ilya aren't your only guests, and you shouldn't leave the others unattended.
- Do anything in particular to pass the time?

As for leaving now … well, you could probably get away with it, especially since you're not the host
While I'd be fine with leaving early, the above "get away with it" implies it's still too early for it to be entirely polite. Even if Flan isn't playing host, her behavior still reflects on the entire Scarlet Devil Mansion.

[X] Much as you'd like to, Lulu and Ilya aren't your only guests, and you shouldn't leave the others unattended.
-[X] If appropriate, options to pass the time could include:
--[X] instigate shenanigans between the two Tohsakas
--[X] suggest an exhibition spar between two TSAB mages like Fate and Nanoha to contrast danmaku duels
--[X] perform music on stage while the Prismrivers are taking a break

These are only suggestions, Flan should veto any she doesn't like or considers a bad idea (e.g. out of political considerations).

AFAIK we haven't practiced our duet with Remilia enough to be an option here, right?

Flandre spent a lot of her spare time on Mid-Childa practicing it, actually; she is now quite comfortable playing it from any point and is certainly capable of performing. She and Remilia have not practiced together at all, but both are extremely capable musicians and know each other very well, so that shouldn't be a problem either. Bigger question would be whether they want to danmaku or just play the music.

For the other suggestions:
1) The Tohsakas seem to have been avoiding each other (and are currently in different rooms doing different things), although whether it's because Mage!Rin doesn't like Luvia/wants to preserver Archer's identity as much as possible, because Luvia is keeping Maid!Rin on a leash, or because Maid!Rin is jealous of Mage!Rin's (apparently superlative) success, or something else entirely Flan doesn't know. She would have to instigate something to view shenanigans, which isn't too polite ... but Illyasviel would probably help.

2) I'm not entirely sure what you're suggesting. If I do understand what you mean correctly, then Flan already has an idea of how that works, but I'd really like some clarification, because it's probably a bit complicated (and depends a lot on who's dueling).

3) The Prismrivers actually aren't on stage at the moment, and most of the people outside seem to be enjoying the quiet. Presumably, the Poltergeist Ensemble are currently providing the music for the dancing.

As long as it's only shenanigans and not malicious (or obvious that she was arranging it to happen), I think this would still be a net positive. Sure, the two Tohsakas will be slightly annoyed, but that wouldn't bother Flan, now would it?

What I meant is a sparring match between e.g. Nanoha and Fate. Their standard spells (shooters, barriers, binds, ...) are nonlethal like danmaku but don't have the same strict rules, so people from Gensokyo might find it interesting to observe. Besides, it allows the TSAB mages to show off, which could bring a certain amount of respect towards future mages coming here for recuperation, increase youkai interest in fighting for the TSAB, and help Remilia's position a tiny bit since the exchange is her project and they're her guests.

Though I wonder how a starlight breaker would interact with the nature of Gensokyo - we would need to ask Patchouli first whether it's safe to use here. Don't want to accidentally rip a hole in the barrier.

Well, there's still "a few more hours", so even if we leave early, we may find a time when the audience would enjoy listenting? If not, just ignore that option. Things like that (people enjoying the quiet) is exactly why I wrote "if appropriate".

Ah. I did misunderstand. The biggest issue would be that how Bureau mages fight isn't particularly noteworthy or interesting, except insofar as using spells is par for the course. It's fighting non-lethally, which youkai understand, and what the Spell Card rules were designed to work around - skill matters, but raw power is still a major factor. Common troops, or even average C~A-ranked mages, aren't going to beat Nanoha the same way someone like Youmu or Momiji is never going to beat Yuuka in a fight without Spell Cards. With Spell Cards, even Cirno could hold her own against Yuuka, which is what makes the system so interesting; there's no real equivalence in Nanoha AFAIK. As such, while Gensokyoans would probably be interested in watching a match, it would mainly be to determine strength and capability - but only for Nanoha and Fate and Vita, the same way that Remilia and Flandre aren't representative of Gensokyo power levels.

Though I wonder how a starlight breaker would interact with the nature of Gensokyo - we would need to ask Patchouli first whether it's safe to use here. Don't want to accidentally rip a hole in the barrier.
Well, Flan wouldn't know to ask Patchouli, although Pache or Remi would probably make sure no one uses anything dangerous. That said, Starlight Breaker is perfectly safe to use. Starlight Breaker Plus (or SB EX), on the other hand ... I'd have to ask Pache. Probably safe unless fired at the Barrier itself from close range, though.

Well, it explicitly has a Barrier Break quality. Best not to.

I didn't actually mean breaking the barrier, but consuming it. Starlight Breaker gathers all ambient mana, so in a realm made of and separated by magic, I'd be worried it might absorb mana and spells that Gensokyo needs to exist.

Ah. So what you're saying is to never let Marisa, Nanoha, and Juliet go unaccompanied for more than a few seconds? :p

Joking aside, that's not something that needs to be worried about - SB doesn't have an infinite collection range, and I doubt it has unlimited storage either. I'd be more worried about Raising Heart breaking (either from too much power or from absorbing 'flavored' mana that doesn't play nice with it) than I would be about Gensokyo losing too much mana (that's going to get released back into Gensokyo anyway).

EDIT: Also, AFAIK SB only draws from 'free-floating' mana, so spells, barriers, and the like shouldn't be affected.

Not quite. Starlight Breaker only draws from 'free' mana in the general area, yes, but we see in Strikers when cast point blank it literally consumes spells near the gathering point. Vivio's Bind were disintegrating under the suction as the mana comprising them were literally ripped out by the spell.

If I'm not mistaken Nanoha probably based the spell's theory off a Jewel Seed Seal(i.e. she hacked together a convergence laser out of something designed to absorb and eliminate the output of a zero point energy reactor)

Honestly, haven't we been messing around with Rin enough? And frankly, I don't get the why of a TSAB duel. You guys realize the consequences if the audience is not impressed?

Or ... the Restrict Lock was being broken by Vivio and/or the AMF, and SBEXFB was absorbing the mana freed from the broken binds rather than being the cause of the binds breaking in the first place. Moreover, we never see any variation of SB, including SBEXFB, eat the spells that virtually every mage or knight has on in any combat situation (the Barrier Jacket). The interpretation you give is possible, but given that it's only seen with the most powerful version of SB, it's still arguable that only that version has the mana draw to actually disrupt established spells.

 *throws the question to Pache*

You watch the people shuffle around in preparation for the next dance. On the one hand, you aren't the host, so you don't need to be up here … but on the other, you do have guests of your own, and you shouldn't neglect them just because Ilya and Lulu are your best friends. Moreover, unless you're very careful and Patchouli decides to help, your disappearance will almost certainly be noticed - you are, after all, Flandre Scarlet, and just because people aren't being obvious about it doesn't mean half of them aren't keeping at least three eyes on you at all times. Of course, you are Flandre Scarlet, and this is your home, and while you aren't free to completely disregard others' opinions, they certainly hold very little weight if you don't think they're important people. You squeeze your friends gently. "Alright - but just for a little bit, and then we're coming back up." Lulu wiggles around and wraps her arms around your stomach; Ilya giggles and nuzzles your cheek. "And I do have to tell Sakuya, so please let me go." Lulu frowns, suddenly worried.

"She won't make you stay, will she?" You smile and pat her head.

"She can't - the most she can do is tell me that Remilia won't like it, or give some reason why I shouldn't. But she can't just tell me that I have to stay up here." Not that you can think of any reason she would. Lulu relaxes and rolls off you, somehow getting her feet beneath her before she hits the floor.

"Right! Ilya and I will start out now. You'll be able to catch up with us?" You nod, smiling.

"Unless you teleport, I should meet you in the hallway." You wave and head toward the drinks to see Sakuya. You wait until a snake-like youkai accepts its cup from her and slithers off, then hop up to the long table. "Hi, Sakuya!" She bows in response.

"Lady Flandre. Is there something I can get for you?" You glance at the various drinks, then at Reimu sitting at a table with the other shrine maiden and the girl in the hat - and several kinds of alcohol - before shaking your head.

"No, I just wanted to let you know that I'm going to be heading downstairs with Ilya and Lulu for a bit." She bows her head. "We'll be coming back up, probably in less than an hour, but if anyone needs me for anything, we'll be in my music room."

"Of course, Lady Flandre. If you do need something, please do not hesitate to call for me." You grin and nod.

"Yep! I'll see you soon!" You hurry back to the table - Sella, Leysritt, and Satsuki are all still there. Satsuki looks over at you expectantly, but you shake your head. "We'll be fine, Satsuki. You stay up here with Sella and Leysritt, okay?" She nods, a little unhappy, and you glide forward to bop her nose. "Or do you just want to turn in and go to sleep?" She blushes and shakes her head vehemently, and you giggle.

"We shall be alright, Lady Flandre. Lady Illyasviel was quite clear that she wanted no intruders on your time together." … You'll have to make sure she doesn't park Berserker outside the door, then. Or just inside it, for that matter. It would be very embarrassing if Sakuya were killed by him, after all - Remilia really likes her, and good maids don't just grow on trees!

… Well, you're pretty sure they don't, at least in most cases. Depending on just what you want them for, though, a dryad could be quite the catch as a maid, for example. You shake your head, driving the idea of Sakuya trees out of your head before anything weirder can sneak in, and easily catch up to your friends before they get very far.

"Hehe. Are you going to carry us, then?" You grin at Ilya, then duck to sweep your arms into your friends' knees so you can pick them up, their backs leaning against your shoulders and your wings serving as a sort of safety bar. Lulu squeals happily - and then you fly forward. It's a little tricky, carrying them like this, but as long as neither one tries anything outrageous, there shouldn't be any trouble … and you do reach your destination without any problems. That's almost a little worrying, because Patchouli and Koakuma were both still upstairs when you left, and Marisa is … somewhere, if she hasn't left already. You set them down and stretch your neck before opening the door to the music room.

"So, did either of you have any special requests, or am I going to decide?" Ilya makes a thoughtful murmuring sound as they follow you inside - and to the piano, rather than to the listening couch.

"… Why don't you start playing something, and if we think of something we'll let you know, okay?" You shake your head amusedly at Ilya's suggestion and sit on the bench. Ilya sits to your left, her back to the piano; Lulu sits to your right, facing you and Ilya. You run your hands over the lacquered-red keys, not actually pressing any of them, and eventually you start playing something - a fast piece, but still rather melancholic. One of the Prismrivers' compositions for a piano. As you play, you wonder again about Merlin's proposal. She might have forgotten, of course, or maybe she's just not ready … or maybe Lunasa made her give it up. All in all, it's probably for the better that you don't bring it up tonight, at least not until the party is just about over - you don't want people to think you're trying to pressure one of the true neutrals of Gensokyo, after all. Ilya shakes her head when you glance at her, and Lulu … leans against you. She does scoot over so she's leaning against your back, not your shoulder or arm, though. She takes a deep breath as you move into the next piece, another Prismriver composition.

"... It sounds like you." You glance at Lulu. "It's sneaky and mischievous, and cheerful."

"It does fit," Ilya agrees, and you smile and shrug lightly. If that's their impression of you, you won't correct them. "Could … could you play Erlkönig again? And sing, too?" Lulu nods quickly.

"And … and then that lullaby, if it has music?" You smile as you nod - a dark, violent piece followed by one of peace and comfort. Isn't that how you met both of your wonderful friends? There was even a kidnapping attempt with Agito …. You don't sing 'properly', the way you would if they were sitting on the listening couch; instead, you keep it at a more conversational level, more of a singing talk than true singing. In many ways, that lets you make the Erlkönig's voice even more sinister - in particular, hissing doesn't carry very well. When you finish Der Mond ist aufgegangen, neither Ilya nor Lulu have any particular requests, so you play another two lullabies … and then, still absent any requests, you play Night on Bald Mountain. When you finish that, you frown at Ilya, but she just puts a finger to her lips and smiles. Carefully, gently, you turn the other way - Lulu is sleeping against you.

"She's just tired," Ilya says. "You don't need to worry about what happened with me happening to her, though. She's just too stubborn to nap upstairs, since if her mother sees her then she'll feel like she needs to do something …." You nod in understanding, then look back at the piano.

"So, is there anything you wanted to hear?" She blushes lightly and shakes her head.

"No - I mean, there are some things I want to hear, but right now … just being here is good enough for me. If you want to keep playing, I don't mind, and if you want help moving Lulu over to the couch, I don't mind." You make a face at her and she giggles before leaning against you. "… Actually, do you mind if we just stay here for a bit?" You smile.

"Go ahead."

Fifteen minutes later, she helps you wake up Lulu so you can go back upstairs..
