[X] Try sneaking into the school and looking up the student records.
She starts trying to talk, then closes her mouth. After several more false starts, her shoulders droop and she looks down. "I … I don't know, Flandre-sama," she says quietly. "I try to think of something, but … my mind goes white and my chest gets tight, and …." She trails off and hugs herself tightly. You fly over and sit next to her on the bed. She shudders when you put your hand on her shoulder.
"Would it help if I came up with some options?" She nods and you lean back. "Well, the first thing I would do is go check his home and see if he's there -" Satsuki jerks sideways in shock and falls off the bed. You start to lean forward as she bounces back to her feet.
"N-no! I - I can't do that! Th-The Tohno mansion - not even the Arimas! I couldn't bother them like that!" You blink, more than a little confused, and Satsuki looks away again. "Um, until a little while ago, Tohno-kun lived with a related family, the Arimas. It's … it was kind of a secret. Inui-kun didn't want to tell me …." She trails off and her expression grows troubled. You shrug. Oh, well.
"Okay, so no snooping around his house. Or his old home, I guess. What about your home? Could we …." You trail off as Satsuki pales and shakes her head terrifiedly. You lean down and touch the top of her head, sliding your hand down to cup her cheek. "Alright. We won't try to talk to anyone directly. But that really only leaves us one option." You sigh and sit up, then drop down to the floor. Satsuki swallows nervously and looks around.
"… One option? What's that?" You sigh again and look up at her.
"We wait until everyone's gone, then go to your school and look for any records. If we find some, great; if we don't … that still doesn't mean much. Maybe you just went to a different school, or the timelines don't match up." She cocks her head.
"… Timelines?" You wince.
"Well, you remember it was February in Fuyuki? It's early December here. And I think it's September or October in Gensokyo. If the years don't match up …." Her face pales again and her eyes widen. You float up and cup your hands firmly but gently along the sides of her face. "Satsuki, calm down. Don't panic. This is all conjecture, we don't know what we will find. If the school doesn't have anything useful, there are still other places we can check, right?" If it comes to it, you could probably get Amy or Fate to see if the Mid-Childans can check for anyone Satsuki might know with their magic or technology, but that's something you should probably save for the end, after Satsuki has gone and tried things herself. After a few moments of staring into your eyes, Satsuki nods and relaxes, then crumbles and wraps her arms around you in a painful bone-grinding hug, sobbing almost silently. You pull her back onto the bed.
"I - I'm sorry, F-F-Flandre-sama …." You hug her back and press her face against your shoulder.
"It's alright, Satsuki. You can cry. You don't have to worry about shame." She is, after all, still so very human. The youkai response would be anger, frustration, outrage - but the human response to learning that a sought-after thing might not even exist, or might no longer exist … that is often sadness and despair. Satsuki takes your advice and cries into your shoulder, muffling her keening voice with your dress and your shoulder, as you stroke her hair and murmur comfortingly. Eventually, she simply falls asleep, long before the sun rises. When she finally relaxes completely, you slip out of her clutching grip and move the blanket and pillow so she's more comfortable, then slide back into her arms and fall asleep yourself.
You step out of the train station and look around, then look back at Satsuki - Satsuki, wearing a hooded jacket and hunching her shoulders in a vain attempt to go unnoticed. Well, better that than with despair still bottling up inside her. She looks around, too, and you can tell that some things are the same, because she relaxes … and some things are different, because she tenses up.
"… I guess they finished it," she says, looking wistfully at a tall building. You give her a curious look, but she just shakes her head. "It's supposed to be a symbol of Misaki. Just a building." She swallows and starts walking; not quickly, but not slowly, either. Just walking. You walk alongside her in silence. "Um, so … how are we going to get into the school, anyway? They lock all the doors once everyone leaves." You sniff dismissively.
"Somewhere, someone will have left a door or window unlocked - and even if they haven't, it's a simple matter to get past them anyway." Satsuki gasps delightedly.
"Ah! You can pick locks, Flandre-sama?" You sigh.
"No, Satsuki. I was thinking more along the lines of breaking a lock, window, or door."
"Oh." Her voice is quiet, and you bump her gently with your head. Fortunately, the street is mostly clear around you. "I'm sorry, I just … let my imagination get away from me." You chuckle and pat her arm.
"Don't worry. Hey, tell me about some of the places we're passing!" You pull Satsuki's arm back and forth, and eventually she starts talking, telling you about the shopping centers and the arcades, and then the public buildings, and the streets, and eventually you find yourselves strolling toward a walled complex - her school. You walk up to the gate and peer inside, but it doesn't look like anyone's here. The lights are off, and the gate, quite naturally, doesn't move when you try to push it open. You shrug and grin at Satsuki. "Ready to go in?" She takes a deep breath, then nods. You take one more look around, both in the school and around the lamp-lit street, then float over the gate. Satsuki takes another breath, then jumps over it, landing easily next to you as you send your clones to search for an open door or window. Sure enough, one of the windows on the second floor isn't even closed, and you walk over there, then carry Satsuki up and into the classroom. She swallows, eyes closed, then looks around before walking quickly out of the room. Probably not her classroom, then.
"The office is on the first floor," she says, and you follow her down the hall, down the stairs, and then into an administrative office. There, however, she stops, and you slip past her. Several desks with computers sit against one wall, and narrow cabinets stand against another, but a quick check reveals that the cabinets are locked. You shrug and begin going through the desk drawers along with your clones. Satsuki gingerly pokes around as well, until one of your clones finds something interesting. "A log-in ID and password …." You glance at her and she takes a breath before turning to the computer. A few buttons turn it on, while you continue going through the other desks in case it doesn't work. But it does, and Satsuki excitedly types out the characters for Tohno Shiki in the school database … only to slump in despair as it fails to return any results.
"May I try something?" Numbly, she nods and steps away, and you quickly input her name. "Hmm … Yumizuka Satsuki, senior year, no attendance or disciplinary problems …." Satsuki gasps and stumbles into you, reading about her local incarnation - there's even a picture, and although it's not terribly good it's definitely Satsuki. Then Satsuki reaches over your shoulders to call up a classroom roster and looks through the names there.
"I … I know most of these people, but Tohno-kun still isn't here." She hugs you tightly.
"Let … let me try one more thing, okay?" You go back to the student name look-up and search for students with the first name 'Shiki'. There are several students with the name, spelled various ways, but only one Shiki is in Satsuki's grade - a boy named 'Nanaya Shiki.' Well, that's frustrating. Satsuki turns away and starts sniffling.
