Finders ... Keepers?
[X] Go search for Laevateinn right now.

You shake your head and Ilya looks at you. "Are you sure you don't want anything? You look …." You shake your head again and stand up. Ilya goes still but keeps watching you.

"I'm … I'm sorry, but I have to go, Ilya. I have to find it."

"Do you want us to come with you? Leys can drive us …." You freeze, not wanting to say no but … that would take too long. Ilya seems to understand, however, and nods. "I won't stop you, Flan. You'll come back when you find it?" You nod jerkily, but you're already relaxing.

"I'll come back when I find it," you repeat. Deis just watches you, worried and waves as you turn to leave. You have to go to the temple, have to find your gift -

"Flan? If you can't find it, will you come back?" You stumble at Ilya's question. If you can't find Laevateinn? That … that is not acceptable. You will find Laevateinn, and then you will come back here. Without another look back you start running, anxious to get to your gift and to make sure it's alright. Once you're in the wide hallways you take off, flying to move faster until you reach the front entrance. You have to land to open the door, but then you hurl yourself forward, heedless of the pain of the sunlight and the damage you're doing to your dress. You could fly through the trees, in the shade beneath the branches … but that would mean you would have to slow down. Not acceptable.

Scant minutes after leaving Ilya's castle you reach the temple and continue in a ballistic trajectory into the forested mountainside. Sound becomes something useful again, and your brief view of the front of the mountain lets you see a veritable horde of people, and all sorts of vehicles. Did the fight do more damage than you thought? Or is this a continuation of the repair work from before? Either way, it's annoying - you remember how the fight went, but the end of it, when Berserker knocked Laevateinn from you, that was confusing even to you, and you need to go back to the stairway to make sure you're looking in the right place. If people are in the way, you'll have to be careful. And if it's not where it should be … well, you won't turn down such a grand feast they've prepared for you. You crash through the trees and branches as you land and quickly replace your dress before hurrying across the mountainside, only to snarl in frustration as you catch a glimpse of the stairway - it is full of people. You take a calming breath - as calming as you can take - and turn invisible so you won't be caught before continuing down toward the place you fought Berserker.

Something is different about the people here, though. Not just normal people, there are some in suits and even a few chanting monks. You frown, eyes narrowing, and dart back to the top of the stairway - there isn't any additional damage that you can see, but the monk chanting at the gate … some of the charms he's putting up look like ones you've been told Reimu uses. The real ones, not her Spell Cards. You whirl about and leap down to where you stood against Berserker. You can tell Ilya about it, see if she knows anything about it, but for now, you need to find Laevateinn. You were using your new Spell Card, and you were standing … there. And Berserker's sword came from your left …. You study the scorched mountainside and pantomime the last few actions you can remember, trying to guess how hard Berserker hit Laevateinn and what sort of angle it would have gone flying off at, but after several frustrating minutes of trying to remember it properly, you gnash your teeth and begin searching the hard way. You have a cone, if nothing else. Time flows like stone as you search the forest, trees and soil and leaves, minute after excruciating minute, and barely a quarter-hour after you started you begin to have doubts. Maybe Berserker hit it the other way, or you got the angle wrong; maybe someone found it earlier and took it away from you; maybe you already passed it! Headless tries to stop you, talks to you soothingly about how you can make another pass after you finish the area instead of going around in possibly pointless circles. She's right, of course, and you continue covering fresh ground.

Then you see it - a scar of destruction through the branches. You freeze and follow the line of scythed-through limbs, only for your gaze to fall on someone else. Tall and muscular, barefoot and wearing simple, plain clothes, and carrying Laevateinn. You snarl and hunch forward, glaring, and drop your invisibility. The man stops walking and looks at you calmly. "That's mine. Give it back." He doesn't react to your hostility, the hiss of your voice, simply stares at you for a moment before holding your precious gift out to you. You're a little surprised at the ease with which he holds it out, but that doesn't stop you from rushing forward and all but snatching Laevateinn from him. You cradle it against your chest, calming yourself, then … yes, you have to test it. You hold it aloft, channel power through it, and are rewarded with a small column of flame. You relax completely and turn around to find the man walking away. "Thank you!" He stops and half-turns to look at you with his good eye and you wave happily. He looks at you for a moment before continuing on his way. You watch him for a moment, a little confused by his lack of reaction regarding your appearance and abilities. Maybe you should follow him and see what he does? … No, no. You'll remember him, of course, but right now … right now you should go back to Ilya like you promised.

Exhilaration fades and you take a deep breath. Several deep breaths, as you become more aware of the beating sun and your general discomfort. You take out a blood pack and, making sure you aren't going to set the forest on fire - again - you thaw it out and guzzle it down. Without Caster's help you wouldn't have been able to fight as long against Berserker as you did, the way you did, but it was still tiring, still draining. You need to relax, to rest, if not sleep. You turn and head back to Ilya's, careful to avoid arousing suspicion and keeping in the shade of the trees as often as you can.

Ilya is waiting for you when you return, standing just outside the front door to her castle, and she smiles as you hold Laevateinn in front of you. Deis sighs and Ilya claps her hands. "You found it!" You put your gift away and she takes the few steps forward necessary to hug you. You shake your head after she lets go, drawing confused looks from both of them.

"No, I didn't. Well, I had found signs of its passing, so I would have found it, but … someone else found it first. He gave it back to me when I asked for it and then we went our separate ways." Ilya frowns and Deis covers her face with her hands. "What?" Ilya shakes her head and chuckles.

"Well, if it's fine, it's fine. Now …." She gives you a sly look and you tilt your head in confusion. "You, my guest, have refused two acts of hospitality. In accordance with ancient Illyasviel laws, you must perform an act of service in penance. Because of my generous nature, I will allow you to choose the service." She crosses her arms and tries to give you a superior look, but it's spoiled by the way she has to keep her smile from spreading across her face. How can you repay her?

What do you do?

[ ] Teach her what you know about cooking.

[ ] Let her choose the service.

I know a lot of stories concerning laws of hospitality, but having to work for refusing it, is a new one. (Especially since we are in no way bound to her family's laws.)

Nevertheless, she was nice to us so far and from what I read in this thread, she really needs help cooking:

That could've gone a lot worse.

Flan's come a long way. I feel like at quest start or even later she would've just gut the man and run off.

Ilya is being a bit of a joker, here - the "ancient laws of Ilyasviel" can't be even twenty years because she's younger than that. I need to work at my descriptions; the smile she's suppressing is like the one that someone pulling a practical joke would have. Ilya's not quite pulling a practical joke, but she's not all that serious, either.

... Not that I'd suggest trying to brush her off or otherwise refuse, because Flan's not tired and refusing would be rude.

Whom did Flandre met here? I don't quite recognise the man ...

Is this sarcasm, or did you genuinely miss all the signs that she's joking around with us because she's actually gotten somewhat comfortable?

I will laugh if this ends in Maid Flandre.

Illya is Illya no matter where she's from, after all. She'll almost definitely have the Maid Switch.

Genuinely missed them. While I have never seen laws like that, I have seen enough strange one to make it believable.

Erm, yes, my fault. I forgot that that is her first name.

You tap your lips thoughtfully. What can you do for Ilya that would be a service and still play along with her game? After several seconds of consideration, during which Ilya's lips twitch and her cheeks start to puff out, you snap your fingers and a devious but innocent grin appears on your face. "That I may erase the debt of honor between us, gracious one, may it please you that I share with you my knowledge of the culinary arts?"

"I already know how to cook," she says, pouting, and you clasp your hands and bow.

"Of course, but your art must take time, and I have had had much practice across a wide variety of foods - soups and sausages, breads and sweets, dumplings and omelettes. Grilled and boiled and steamed and fried and -" As you progress down the list, Ilya's face locks in position, as if she's understanding the enormity of what you plan, but what stops you is a strangled cry from Deis. You frown at her, worried as she gesticulates wildly with her hands before finally pointing at you sternly.

"You owe me … so much!" Then she vanishes and Ershin laughs before turning and walking away. Your frown deepens - she didn't sound angry, exactly, but certainly somewhat unhappy about something. Then it clicks and you wince, because you do owe her quite a lot. If you hadn't been so intent on fighting Berserker until you couldn't fight anymore, she might have gotten out of there with her body intact, and therefore would be able to enjoy your cooking. Once she gets another body you'll have to make it up to her … it's a bit of a shame that Caster never got around to getting your clothes. She did want to see you in a variety of maid outfits, after all - it probably wouldn't have been difficult to get her to make you one. You look over to see Ilya worriedly looking back and forth between you and the retreating form of Ershin.

"Don't worry," you say, smiling cheerfully. "It's just something I need to remember to do. So, shall we be off to the kitchen? Or would you prefer another service of your own devising?" She gives you a serious look for a moment before smiling and shaking her head.

"No, that's alright. I did have something in mind, but that was only if you couldn't come up with something on your own, so there's no need to worry about it." She turns and you follow alongside her as she leads you toward the kitchen. "So, what are you going to teach me first?" She almost doesn't sound nervous, and your grin returns.

"Well, first I need to see what you know already, and then we can go from there. So, the first thing that's going to happen is that you're going to make something for me!"

You have to admit that Ilya does possess the knowledge of how to cook, and what she made is quite edible. The toast is just shy of 'burnt,' she stared at the egg while frying it and took it off maybe a little early, and she didn't cut her fingers while slicing vegetables. Of course, she also made them in that order, so the temperatures are all off …. Now you know why Deis was waving her hands earlier; you just can't let it go now that you know about it. Hopefully she learned from watching others instead of having been taught. You make a small bow in thanks and smile at her.

"Thank you, Ilya. Now, would you like to take notes, or will your memory suffice?" She raises an eyebrow, perhaps getting suspicious, but shakes her head. Arrogance or foolishness? Both, probably. You nod and clap your hands once, and your clones step out and scramble through the kitchen, gathering the tools and ingredients you'll need. Whichever of the servants is in charge is certainly quite capable. "I believe we shall start with … hmm. Eggs, yes. They're good, after all, and quick to make." Ilya pouts.

"I just did that!" You titter and wag your finger at her.

"You fried an egg, yes, but there are several kinds of fried eggs. Moreover, frying is far from the only method of cooking eggs. For example, boiling, or scrambling." You gesture as your clones follow your whims, one setting six eggs inside a pot of water to boil while another begins mixing them so they can be properly scrambled. The fourth begins laying out preparations for an omelette. You begin by explaining the differences between the different frying methods and results, and why someone might want one or another, then go into the different cooking methods you're using. She seems a little bored by it all, but perks up when the scrambled eggs are ready and placed before her. By the time she's finished, the eggs are done boiling and are sitting out to cool while the omelette is begun. You show her the difference between hard- and soft-boiled eggs and make some deviled eggs as well. She pouts unhappily when you scold her for her failure to clean up what she had made, but it needs to be impressed upon her - after all, this is a service, so you have to do it rightly!

You then move on to bread and dumplings, hot and cold and the different kinds of flour that have effects. What you can add - almost anything, really, especially in dumplings - and how that affects the way you cook them. She has some trouble mixing the dumpling dough when you ask her to try, but that's mostly because she hasn't done anything like this before. She shrugs off your question on the presence of garlic - the lack thereof, rather. Are they simply out, which would be rather strange, or was it removed? Maybe they just don't use it, although that, too, would be curious. When you boil the dumplings, two of your clones hold her up so she can more easily see what you're talking about. As with the eggs, her interest seems to peak when she actually gets to eat the food … perhaps she likes the fact that you're feeding her more than what you're teaching? Well, as long as she's absorbing the information it's fine. It wouldn't do for her to completely fail the test, after all! You dismiss your clones after the last set of dumplings are put into the pot to boil.

"So, shall we continue later in the evening or tomorrow?" Ilya blinks in surprise and stares at you.

"Eh? We're not done?" You giggle and shake your head.

"Of course not! We've merely scratched the surface of what I know, after all. We haven't even started on the meat-based dishes, for example, or cheeses. Of course, I don't expect you to know everything, but … oh, you should be able to make a six-course meal by the time we're done. At least that, anyway - if you have the aptitude, we could experiment and see how well you can make a larger one." She stares at you, trying to figure out if you're joking - but even if you were, she wouldn't be able to tell. Finally she sighs and smiles wryly.

"Tomorrow, I think. I get the feeling that some things you could talk quite a lot about, and I do still have the Heaven's Feel to finish." That's true; there's the shadow-thing, too, and Arcueid is something interesting as well. But how actively should you pursue your other interests?

What do you do?

[ ] Ask Ilya about Arcueid.

[ ] Talk to Ilya about the shadow-thing and what Caster thought about it.
