Temple Defense II
[X] Hold your ground.

You don't have any time to prepare before Berserker charges again, great stone blade crashing down on your head. You raise Laevateinn in an attempt to deflect it and slip sideways. The sword slams into the steps and you tumble over it as he sweeps it across, sending pieces of the stairway flying into the ravaged forest. Your clones dart forward, attempting to hold the wounded hero still so you can unleash another Spell Card, but he overpowers the two that try to latch onto his arm and lashes out at you again. The third clone wraps itself around his face, blinding the hero, but it doesn't seem to do any good - you slip to his unarmed side and his weapon still follows you! You desperately fend off his attacks, fighting to keep from being pushed into the softer ground of the hillside, until the third clone bites the wounded hero's head in an attempt to make him lose focus. It is only partially successful, in that he reaches up and tears it from his face and throws it into you, knocking you to the ground. You only survive thanks to the other two clone wrapping themselves around Berserker's torso, holding him back so his lunging chop merely cuts through your torso instead of splitting you in half. Your clone, of course, vanishes, and you hurl yourself forward, trying to get inside his guard so you can use Laevateinn. Instead he catches you with his free hand and hurls you to the steps, then leaps after you, dragging your clones along with him.

Even as you raise your own weapon for a futile block, lances of stone erupt out of the ground beside you, stalling Berserker for a crucial moment. You hurl yourself straight up as the lances explode toward Berserker, showering him with stone shards and molten rock, but he ignores them and lunges at you as your clones fly off. You rise higher and the giant lowers himself, preparing to leap at you. You turn and dive straight at him as he surges through the air. You're moving too quickly, the range too short, for his weapon to arc around at you, but your own thrust with Laevateinn pierces through his blocking hand and into his skull … but not deeply enough to kill him. You slam into his arm and he throws you away, your arms nearly wrenched from their sockets as you maintain your death-grip on Laevateinn. You hit the ground and tumble into a tree, and you brace yourself as Berserker lands and turns to face you. With a painful roar he leaps straight at you, and you activate the new Spell Card you'd made - Taboo "Laevateinn Strike." A blade of flame leaps out of your precious gift and you swing it at Berserker. He plows into you all the same, however, seeming to crack every bone in your chest and skull, but when he doesn't try to follow up you sigh, relieved, and slither out from under him and pop your right arm back into its proper place before falling back cautiously toward the steps. Power surges, visible in its intensity, and Berserker rises again, turning smoothly toward you and making a prodigious leap. Your remaining clones hurl themselves forward, swooping from high above and shattering on impact with his mighty hide, but his momentum is interrupted, and in that moment when he's off-balance you surge forward again, slamming into him with your shoulder and driving Laevateinn up through his chin and into his skull. The mighty hero falls once more and as you drift back, your clones once more stepping out from within you, and an emotion wells up within your chest. You throw your head back and howl your laughter to the stars, the sky, the burning forest, the waning moon.

You shouldn't laugh, and Headless tries to shake you out of your emotionally-charged state as Berserker rises once more. You're running out of options, and you can't assume that what's worked will continue to work; even an animal can realize that you're trying to pull the same trick twice, after all. But it's just so exhilarating. You've only lasted this long, only have the power to have brought back your clones several times and healed your injuries and fought Berserker as well as you have thanks to the power that Caster is supplying. You only survived one of his attacks because Deis was looking out for you. You can't win this fight - you can't, it's not possible - but it's a fight, a glorious, wonderful, fun exchange of power that's pushing you past your breaking point again and again. You could have beaten Lancer that first time if you'd taken him seriously, brought out your clones and fought him like you are now. Against Berserker, they're just a delaying tactic, moving shields that might possibly slow him down. Your laughter doesn't die until, after several seconds of frantic blocks and deflections on your part, one of Berserker's attacks breaks through, the great stone weapon crashing against Laevateinn and knocking it aside, cutting and smashing you and sending you flying into the forest again. Your clones dive to your rescue once more, slowing Berserker's charge enough for you to slip past him and return, almost mockingly, to the stairway. You can't win this fight, and maybe you'll die here, but right now you will not let him past you.

He charges at you instead of leaping, and you block his blade with your precious gift, deflecting it into the ground away from you, but as always it simply arcs around and swings toward you from the other side, never still. But Berserker himself is planted, and two of your clones wrap themselves around his left leg and begin to lift. Not to throw him, but simply to force his assault to slow for the instant you need. He fails to cooperate, and the clones plant themselves to toss him back down the steps, but a curious flash in the distant air breaks your concentration just enough. Laevateinn is pushed through your gut hilt-first and Berserker's sword shatters your rib cage. You pick yourself up from the ground as the last of your frenzied clones is dashed to the ground, but command from below ceases the combat - Berserker leaps backward and returns to Ilya's side. You suck greedily at the energy Caster is providing you through the channel and heal those parts that you had neglected - skin torn off, nails ripped out, fixing your wings, those lesser bones that had been snapped or cracked … all the minor damage that affected parts of you that didn't matter for the fight. Berserker isn't much better, with his flesh gouged and torn, and waxy where the flames burned him. But like you he stands tall and unbowed. A shame you can't do anything about your clothes, but Ilya's not likely to let you call a time-out for changing. Your eyes narrow as you catch sight of Sella and Leysritt, facing the road to town and acting as though they're prepared for a fight. You flick your gaze to Ilya. She isn't smiling anymore, and as she stares up at you red glyphs light up her face and shine through her clothes.

What do you do?

[ ] Hold your ground.
- [ ] Activate Loki.

[ ] Fighting retreat up the stairs.
- [ ] Activate Loki.

[ ] Withdraw to the courtyard.
- [ ] Activate Loki.

[ ] Other?

DM Note: Activating Loki will cut off the supply from Caster, so Flan won't be able to spam her clones anymore.

Hmm, I don't think the extra protection from Loki is worth not having so many clones.

If he gets any stronger, the fight won't be fun anymore. Maybe we should just prepare ourselves to break him, as soon as no one we care about is in the blast radius.

[X] Hold your ground.
- [X] Ask Ilya what she's watching out for, you thought she was looking forward to this fight?
- [X] Prepare to break Berserker, should anything be done to make him stronger.
- - [X] If possible, only break him, while no one important is in the blast radius.

How often had he been killed by now? I think Ilya will pull out if it gets too risky.
He has twelve lives. Worse, some canon material suggests he can slowly regain lost lives over time, meaning that any deaths days before this fight might not count for determining how many he has left.

I don't think Ilya would make him retreat before he's down to one or two and I'm skeptical of Flandre's ability to kill him another 7 or 8 times in a fight like this.

I think the Shadow is approaching though, if Illya's servants reaction is to be believed.

[X] Hold your ground.
- [X] Don't attack.
- [X] Activate Loki.

Shit. Something's on its way.

That could be bad, and if it's the Shadow, then maintaining our link with Caster is /probably not a good thing./

Anyone see something other people didn't?

Entropy Judge considered my post as "Insightful" - maybe it's a hint?

It looks like there's something else coming, is what it looks like. And Illya's activated her full magic circuit, which is... unusual.

A flash in the distant air. Archer, or someone else?

Something made Illya call Berserker back right before he obliterated Flan. Her weapon was knocked away, and was in a position of vulnerability, but he didn't strike to kill her.

There's something wrong here.
