Alright, so normally it would be another two hours before I call a lock, but it's still tied up, and I'm tired and cranky. So here's what I'm going to do.
Voting will stay open for another twenty-four hours (until
), at which point I will lock it and do the update. Then the next update won't be until Monday (possibly Tuesday). Now, I'm going to go to sleep. Talk, discuss, be 'ooligans and ne'er-do-wells.
Ehh. No strong feelings about the plans themselves but I guess planning is better than winging it? Makes Caster feel better at least, even if she may not be fully trusted...
Eh, for the sake of moving on:

Your eyes narrow slightly as you stare down at the table, fingers drumming lightly against the wood. You can fight Berserker on the steps, and Deis can wait farther up the mountain, either to support you or to form a second line of defense. It's not quite an ideal location, and you're not the ideal combatant to face Berserker, but it's better than letting him get into the courtyard itself …. And if Caster can provide you with a stable power supply, you should be able to bulk up your clones a bit more than usual, make them tougher than you normally do. Against Berserker in the relatively close area of the stairway, that will serve better than speed. You lean back so you're sitting up straight and look at Caster.
"You look like you have an idea," Deis says, and you nod. Caster gestures and the table is overlaid by a diagram of the temple grounds.
"Yes. First, Caster, if you could set it up so that I can receive power from you, it will make things easier. I will wait for Berserker around here, near the halfway point of the stairway. Deis, if you could wait farther up, either at the gate or in the courtyard, that would be best. Support me if you can, or form a defensive line of your own making. Satsuki will be back with you, Caster, or with Souichirou; without seeing her fight and knowing how much power she requires to fight and heal, I don't want to send her against Berserker. Instead, if it comes down to it, she will assist you and your Master in retreating from this place. Any questions?" Caster and Deis raise their hands simultaneously and you scowl. Caster gestures for Deis to go first and frowns at the map on the table.
"Flan, if I'm that far from you any support I can give isn't going to be worth much. I can try to target Berserker, but unless you can immobilize him he's probably going to dodge or deflect them unless I use something with a large enough area that you'll get hit as well." You nod and she raises an eyebrow.
"I don't expect that I'll be able to hold Berserker in place for very long - I'm probably going to have to retreat up the stairs fairly quickly, in fact, especially if he makes an effort to keep advancing. The idea isn't to hold a 'line' or a 'point,' but to hold an area and punish him for entering; if I stand in one spot and try to beat him in a direct confrontation, he'll probably win because he has more power and reach, so I have to keep moving. I can slow him down, but that will probably only be temporary." Deis frowns at you for a moment before sighing. You reach toward her, but it's only after she leans toward you that you're able to pat her head comfortingly. You wait for Caster.
"My first question is about your choice of battleground. Assassin could hold the stairway due to his great skill and the reach of his sword. I do not wish to sound insulting, but you have neither of those advantages, Flandre, so wouldn't it be wiser to fight in a more open area?" You shrug.
"It's not that bad a location to fight, and if he wants to simply bull through it will be difficult to stop him. However, the alternative place to fight is the courtyard, which is closer to you. All he would need to do is get a solid hit knocking me away and then he'd have a clear path to you; on the steps, it'll be harder for him to get that clear hit, I'll have more time to recover, and he won't have as much room to maneuver, only forward. Not to mention that fighting in the courtyard risks the monks waking up from the fighting. It would allow both you and Deis to give support against Berserker, but that can still happen if he forces me back into the courtyard." Caster nods thoughtfully.
"I see. Following from that, why do you wish for a mana supply instead of reinforcement? If I strengthened you, you should be capable of fighting Berserker to a standstill instead of being forced to withdraw."
"That is true, but if the effect fails for whatever reason then I'm immediately at a disadvantage; if I'm receiving power from you and that gets cut off, I still have whatever of my own reserves are left to fight at the same efficacy. Moreover, I have a couple ideas that would benefit more from a greater power supply than an increase in my own capabilities." Caster watches you for a moment before looking down at the table again.
"… I believe I understand. I do, however, have one more question - the Einzbern Master. I understand that you are fond of her, but will you truly refuse any attempt to kill her directly?" You hesitate, then tap your fingers together.
"Admittedly, I don't want any harm to come to Ilya, and I also want her to remain safe so that I may enjoy as much of a fight with Berserker as I can. If the combat is going so far against me - against you - that your life is in immediate danger, I don't expect that my wish for her safety should override your survival. If you need to, kill her." Caster relaxes, tension draining from her shoulders. "However, it may be wiser to keep her alive." Caster's hands clench angrily and she glares at you. Deis shifts uncomfortably.
"What do you mean, Flan?" You release your breath at Deis's question.
"The shadow-thing. If it is related to the Grail, Ilya is the only one likely to have any insight into dealing with it - especially if she can communicate with her family. Ilya may even be able to keep this War from being wasted if something is wrong with the Grail, like what seems to have happened the last time." Caster stares blankly at you, then blinks before slumping.
"Of course … I had forgotten …." You tilt your head at her half-heard murmurs and she shakes herself. "Yes, that is something to bear in mind. I cannot think of any other questions or concerns; if you have no other concerns, I shall prepare the connection for you." You nod, smiling.
"Thank you, Caster." She bows her head and withdraws. You frown - this is her sanctum, after all - but maybe there's just something she needs elsewhere. After a few seconds you take the large book of stories out again and turn to the page you were on - the Twelve Labors. Deis moves closer and you put the book on the table so she can read it, too. "Heracles's greatest accomplishments," you tell her as you start reading. The information on the tasks is brief, but again it's enough to make you somewhat relieved that Berserker doesn't possess his full wisdom and cunning. Before you can talk about them with Deis, however, Caster returns. You stand up, but she simply waves you to a clearer part of the room.
"Over there will be fine; this will take time, but it does not require much in the way of materials or assistance. Just relax and let me work …." You do as she says, sitting on the floor near the table. Deis gives you a reassuring smile and you close your eyes to wait for Caster to work her magic. You can feel the power start to grow around you, and the scent of Caster's magic fills your nose. It's hard, keeping yourself from sneezing, but it doesn't take long until you feel Caster's fingers on the back of you neck and hear unintelligible muttering. The magic that had been coalescing around you burrows into your neck where Caster is touching you, burning and boiling and blasting its way through your neck, your throat, until it pierces your heart. You sit there, heart scorching and healing from Caster's power, unable to move, for a long time, until finally the path the magic took starts cooling, hardening, forming a solid path for Caster's power to reach you. … A solid path, but not a permanent one. Caster's fingers leave your neck and she takes several unsteady steps away from you. "That … was more difficult than I had anticipated." You slowly turn to look at her, and your eyes widen at how haggard she looks now. You feel her power, warm and wet, begin surging through the channel she made. It takes a few moments before your body begins processing it, consuming it and altering it into something your body can use for fuel more easily, and you smile up at her. "It is working, then? Good … then …." She stumbles away again and yawns before shaking her head and simply sitting back down at the table. Deis chuckles and you turn toward her.
"No, no, just thinking that you should probably get some rest, too; she was drilling that hole through you for a good forty minutes." You nod and drowsily crawl toward her, snuggling against her. "How's it working, anyway?" You shrug.
"… It's fine; not permanent, and my body wants to fix it. Can't let Berserker hit me too hard, hehe! Don't want to ruin it by fixing it if he crushes my chest, after all." Come to think of it, you probably shouldn't use Loki, either, in case it cuts off the supply. Well, you'll live. You curl closer to Deis and fall asleep.
A sharp flick to the forehead wakes you up and you stretch awkwardly before blinking and looking around. Deis pats you on the head. "Alright, I'm done with being a pillow for now," she says, and you pout as you let her go. She stands up, stretching herself, and winces. "Ooh~ I need to walk around for a bit. Don't get started without me." You blink confusedly at her before shaking yourself. Your book is still on the table, so you put it away. Out of the corner of your eye you see Satsuki, looking a bit wan still, and you pat the floor next to you, taking out a blood pack as she walks toward you.
"Do you know what's going to happen tonight?" A brief flaring of power - and an attendant sparking sensation along Caster's channel - and the blood is ready to drink. Satsuki takes it gratefully and nods.
"There's supposed to be a fight against a Servant, and I'm supposed to stay back," she says around the blood pack.
"Yes, I'd rather not have anything happen to you, especially so soon, and I'm not sure you have the experience to fight him very well, anyway. Mmm … what time is it, anyway?"
"It's not night yet. It'll be less than an hour, though. Aaaah~" She finishes the blood pack and smiles at you. "Thank you, Sca- um, F-Flandre-sama." You smile back and nod happily. Well, Ilya probably won't be here right at nightfall, so you should have some time for last-minute preparations.
What do you do?
[ ] Just wait; the tension will make the fight better when it finally comes!
[ ] Practice with Satsuki a little; you'll be warmed up and you'll have a better idea of what she can do.
[X] Practice with Satsuki a little; you'll be warmed up and you'll have a better idea of what she can do.
You lean over the table and look at Satsuki. "So, what do you know about fighting?" She frowns uncomfortably and shakes her head.
"I've seen some movies, and I've seen people fight a couple times, but … it was never anything I did. I just … lived my life, never really got into trouble. And after … Ciel-senpai never taught me anything." You nod and stare at the wall for a bit before responding. Movies; you remember the movie you saw, how divorced its combat was from reality. That does not bode well for Satsuki; maybe it would be better if she had absolutely no idea how to fight ….
"How have you fed since then? Did Ciel bring you blood packs?" She shakes her head.
"I mean, once or twice she did, but usually I'd just try to … to not lose control, you know? And someone would come by and I'd … I'd …." She leans back, frightened, and waves her hands in front of her. "I never killed anyone, though! It's just … they would get close to me, even though I told them not to, and then they'd be close enough for me to grab them, and …." Typical 'frightened child' or 'playing sick' behavior, used by a lot of transients that weren't strong enough to attack their prey. Well, when it works it's fine, but she really does need to learn how to fight, in case it doesn't. And you'll probably have to make her kill someone, either in self-defense or just because you're making her, to help her get over her humanity.
"Are you able to go outside right now?" Her breathing steadies and her expression clears as she processes your question.
"It should be fine. Um, what are you going to do?" She hops to her feet to follow you as you walk away. You take a deep breath of cool twilight air and the two of you make your way back to the pond. Satsuki seems to grow more nervous as you fail to explain your purpose. Deis and Caster are there, and you wave as they stop their conversation.
"Don't worry about us. Just doing a bit of practice." You stand in a clear spot near the water and face Satsuki. "Okay, now I want you to hit me." She looks at you nervously and hangs back. Deis, out of her line of sight, shakes her head in amusement.
"I … I can't do that!" You start to scowl, to order her to strike you, but then you realize that that isn't why she's hesitating. Instead, much like her victims underestimated her, she's underestimating you and doesn't want to hurt you. You smile sweetly at her.
"Okay, I'll go first. See if you can stop me~" You give her a moment to prepare herself, then lunge forward and duck low, grabbing her ankle and swinging her around you before tossing her down the length of the pond. As she disappears into the trees you sigh disgustedly.
"Um … Flan?" You shake your head.
"If that does anything worse than embarrass her I'm going to go find Arcueid and complain about the quality of vampires in this country. Not hitting me just because I look like a little girl! Hmph!"
"Flandre? Are you planning on doing that to Berserker?" You glance at Caster and shake your head.
"Not really. I've got a couple ideas that involve throwing him, yes, but even if I'm faster than he is, he's at least as quick as I am, and since he's so much bigger I'd need more time to get a solid grip. No, I think my main weapon against him is going to be Laevateinn. Besides, he's an excellent wrestler; I know how to wrestle, but it's not a particularly useful skill for me so I've never tried it." Satsuki finally emerges from the trees and marches toward you, humiliated and angry, but she stops when she gets to you and waits for you to say something. "The point of this isn't to see if I can throw you off the mountain, Satsuki, nor is it to let you punch me into a smear on the ground. I'm trying to teach you something in case you have to fight, because you're probably going to have to at some point and I'm not really going to hold your hand all the time. When I say 'I want you to hit me,' I mean that I want you to attack me and I'm going to defend myself. Now, I want you to hit me." She leans back and windmills her arm before dashing forward with a wild punch. You simply hop back to avoid it, and while she's off-balance you step back in and pull her past you. Looks like it's gonna be a long night until Ilya gets here ….
It's not like you really expected to teach her anything in the short time you had, but her current fighting ability is just embarrassing. It's not even that she's bad, it's that she keeps not wanting to fight, forcing you to make her angry before she'll really try. Still, when that happens … she's still flailing wildly, using her fists as much as her claws, but she isn't so clumsy as usual and she's actually capable of targeting something. She even manages to hit you a few times, although that shocks her back into her usual self almost immediately. Hopefully it's linked to how she keeps trying to think of herself as human instead of vampire, and when you get her to accept what she is she'll get better.
"Flandre. The Einzbern Master is approaching." You step away from Satsuki and nod at Caster. Laevateinn appears in your hand and you take a deep breath.
"Well then, I'll be going down to meet them. Satsuki, you stay by Caster and try to help if she needs it. Deis?" She stretches and smiles.
"I'll be watching from the gate. Don't know what help I'll be, but I'll try to do somethig." You nod and look at everyone before you start to turn around. Caster's voice halts you.
"Flandre … Souichirou-sama and I. This is our home. We will not run." You stare at her for a moment, then bow your head in acknowledgment. If they aren't going to run, you have to stop Berserker. At least one Servant is going to be taken out of the War tonight. You turn and walk to the steps, Deis a few meters behind you. She takes up her position at the top of the steps, where Sasaki used to wait, while you walk down to the halfway point. Several minutes later, Ilya's car stops at the base of the steps and she gets out, followed by Sella and Leysritt. Berserker appears behind her as she approaches the steps. You curtsy, smiling at her, and after staring up at you for a moment she returns it.
"Berserker! Break through Flan and destroy Caster and her Master!" Berserker is still for an instant, then his weapon whips to the side and he dashes forward, then leaps up the steps from landing to landing. You fly down in a charge of your own, and as Laevateinn clashes with his crude sword your clones step out. Two of them seize his arms, the third tries to tangle his legs, and you take advantage of their distraction to make an uninterrupted attack. Laevateinn punches through his skull, front and back, and you tear it out through the top, splitting his head. The mighty warrior slumps, clearly dead, and as your clones adjust their hold to keep him bound, you look down at Ilya. She remains confident, still smiling, even as her servants stare in shock. Power surges below you and you raise your gift for a second strike, but with the ambush sprung Berserker is able to fight back. He kicks out and your third clone is dashed against the steps, still coherent but ineffective, and he manages to contort himself to redirect your attack and lash out against the clone holding his weapon arm. The twisted black rod tears up the skin on his chest but fails to do any real damage, and with one arm free your other clone releases him. The three of you try to spread out but Berserker leaps at you. As you desperately block his weapon, your clones summon their own tools and charge him, but their replicas bend and snap against his hide. Ignoring your clones, he continues to rain blows on you, driving you into the hillside until your clones wrap themselves around his arm, delaying him so you can make good your escape. You fly back deeper into the forest, hoping to draw him into more favorable terrain, but he simply turns back toward the steps as your clones withdraw.
You frown, unhappy, but he is simply following Ilya's command. Well, maybe you can use the way he's ignoring your clones? He slows as a wall of wind slams into him, overhanging branches snapping and hurtling toward Ilya. Your clones swoop into the stream and catch Berserker, lifting him by the torso and stealing him away toward you even as you charge forward with Laevateinn. Almost as if he knew what was happening, his attitude changes and he attacks, his free hand slapping his chest and his weapon scything back. One clone disappears outright, its head crushed, but the other escapes with merely a lost arm. Berserker isn't able to twist enough to divert Laevateinn from spearing through his back, but in the same vein you don't have enough time to divert his attack against you, and as you slam into his side the stone weapon shears through your right side. You tumble away, frantically restoring your missing arm as Berserker chases after you, then dart between his legs and hurl yourself toward the steps, almost avoiding his parting attack - it tears off your wings instead of carving through your chest.
"
!" You spin and plant yourself on the ground, hold yourself there with your ability to fly, and when Berserker comes crashing down on you, you catch his sword. He howls again and your surviving clones press themselves against him, however uselessly, as you take out the failed Spell Card and use it as he yanks the weapon free of your grip. The chaotic torrent of scarlet light burns away, twisting, as you tumble, your concentration breaking - and then something crashes into you and your hips shatter against the steps. You bounce into the air and heal your body as you focus on Berserker - his face is half-melted and steaming, his weapon is glossy and shrunken, and the arm holding it is badly withered as well … and in his ravaged chest you can see the tip of Laevateinn. You reform your clones and the four of you surge forward. Apparently able to distinguish you from your clones, Berserker attempts to strike at you, but you're able to twist around the weapon as your clones yank Laevateinn the rest of the way through his chest. You take it and block the next attack just in time, although you still slam into the steps hard enough to crack the bones in your legs. Your clones hover to the side, waiting for an opening they can use.
