[X] Offer to help with extra-College activities …
- [X] Crimson Nirnroot
You aren't a magician, and you won't be much help with magic-related activities. You raise your hand and wave energetically. "Um, what do you mean, 'research and activities?'" She frowns, but the old man - Tolfdir? - steps forward, smiling eagerly.
"Oh, it's so good to hear you young folk expressing an interest in these sorts of things. You see that?" He gestures at the floating orb, then continues without letting you get a word in. "It was found recently during an excavation of a nearby ruin, but no one's been able to determine what it is! Everyone has their own theory or three, it seems, but very little has - or can! - be proven. And, ah, well, it seems that some of the books that might have held some useful information regarding it have gone … well, missing! Stolen. I understand young Miss Randas will be leaving to retrieve them?" He looks at Mirabelle, and you have to hold back a grin at her quietly fuming expression. She takes a deep breath.
"Yes, Tolfdir is correct. It's not a particularly difficult or dangerous assignment, but Sedris
might be able to make up for her mistakes if she returns the books intact. That won't be up to me. And Faralda will be taking several others on a trip to Blackreach, but that
is very dangerous." You start to raise your hand again, mouth opening as well, and she sighs. "Plant-gathering in a place that - if it's not a myth - is far away and very dangerous for a young girl to be alone in. Now, why don't you all return to your room? I'll make sure someone comes by with something for you to eat." You glower at the clear dismissal, but Lutecia pulls your arm, guiding you away. When you get outside she spins and hugs you. You stand stiffly, shocked, until she steps back.
"Um, I'm sorry, Flan. I just wanted to talk to you without being rude." She takes the necklace off, and you follow suit, a little confused. "… We'll be here for a while, without anything … really exciting … to do. Depending on how long it takes to work something out. And … I know that they might not be able to help, and we'll have to … to …." She takes a shuddering breath and shakes her head. "… Anyway, I know you want to
do something, so, um …." She trails off and you tilt your head.
"Do you
want me to go?" She hesitates, then shakes her head, and you smile happily. "But if I went out and did something, you think
I'd be happier?" She nods somberly, and you sweep her into a hug of your own, twirling her around. "Then, if I go and do something for these people, you won't be too upset, because they'll have more people to work on getting power, right?" She stares, stunned, as you set her down.
"Help …? Flan?" You grin at her confused expression.
"I think I could go gather some plants for them, don't you think? And Faralda is some kind of Master, didn't Sedris say? So if she stays here, they ought to be able to get some work down pretty easily." Your grin sharpens as you glance at Agito. "And I
trust that you'll be good, right?" The fairy snorts and shakes her head. Lutecia seems to understand, because she blushes and glares cutely at you.
"I can take care of myself, Flan." You giggle and hug her close again, and she holds you, too.
"I know you can, Lulu. I'm still going to extract a promise from them to make sure you stay safe, though." You give her a serious look as you step back, and she nods. You smile again. "Good. Then, why don't you two head back to the room, and I'll clear things up with Mirabelle." You replace the necklace and stretch a little as Lutecia nods and walks back to the smaller hall. Agito gives you one of her curious looks before shrugging and following her, and you turn back into the great hall. Tolfdir is examining the orb, Ancano watching him obviously, and Mirabelle and Savos are holding a fierce whispered conversation. Mirabelle sees you first and walks toward you, a frown on her face.
"Is something wrong?" You smile at the unvoiced 'already' and curtsy.
"Oh, Lutecia and I had a little conversation, and it's pretty important. I'll go looking for your plants, and Faralda and her group can stay here and help Lutecia. Just tell me where to go and what to look for." Everyone except Tolfdir stares at you as you wait for a response. Mirabelle takes several deep breaths before taking another step forward, her anger plain to see.
"Perhaps I wasn't clear before. This isn't some grass-picking expedition for a class, where the most dangerous thing around is a senile mudcrab. The group that started exploring numbered fifteen;
four made it out alive. The man who brought the sample to us explained that there were creatures that didn't need light to see well enough to pincushion you with arrows, gigantic bugs that made ice wolves look like pups, and living machines that can pulverize a grown man with a single strike! They lasted three days. And you want to go alone? Taking the place of a Master of Destruction? -" You clear your throat before she can say something she would regret.
"Well, then how about a little test. Why don't you summon that little fire-and-metal thing again? If I can kill it, will that show you that I can take care of myself? I'll even give it a chance, and won't try very hard!" She stares at you, fuming, and Ancano laughs.
"Oh, why don't you let the child try? She is so willing, after all!" He starts chanting under his breath, and both Mirabelle and Savos whip around to face him, readying spells of their own as Tolfdir finally looks up. As a consequence, no one sees you remove your cloak, not until Ancano finishes conjuring a giant icy humanoid. He stares in shock at you even as Savos starts speaking.
"Ancano! What do you think -!" He cuts off, startled, as you hurl yourself forward, past Mirabelle, nearly seeming to appear by the creation's foot. You draw your arm back, almost casually, then drive it forward, shattering the thing's leg at the knee. Before it can fall, however, you dart into the air and grab it by one blade-like arm and hurl it into a wall. "
STOP!" You spin in mid-air at the yell and stare at Savos. He
does have power, it seems …. "Ancano." You glance at the pale-faced Thalmor, and he nods nervously; with a gesture, the thing fades away, and Savos relaxes. "Well. Faralda
did say something about not wanting to go, didn't she?" He stares at Mirabelle until she nods. "Then …." He looks at you, and you tap your finger against your lips.
"One more thing. I want a promise - your
word - that Lutecia will be kept safe while I'm gone." You stare at Mirabelle as you say it; Savos did just demonstrate his power, yes, but you're pretty sure Ancano is only here because he
let him in, so how trustworthy he is ….
You wait as the dark purple magic dissipates, then look around. You're outside, of course, but between the snow-glare and the sun-glare, you can't tell if the landmarks are where they're supposed to be. Behind you is the square, domed structure, and in the middle of the floor is a lever, just as it's supposed to be.
"
Flan? Are you okay?" You grin, then wince and scurry into the elevator and shove the lever forward, sending you downward, out of the sun and into the cool dark.
"
I'm fine, Lulu. Don't worry; I'll probably only be gone a couple days, after all." You try to project an aura of confidence and comfort, but you aren't sure how well you succeeded, because Lutecia sounds just as worried as she did a moment ago.
"
Okay. I'll check in tomorrow, then. … Take care of yourself, Flan." You take a deep breath.
"
Of course I will, Lulu. You make sure you don't worry too much." She drops the connection and you sit to think. 'Crimson Nirnroot' are the plants you're after - odd plants that make a strange tone. You remember seeing a green variety on your way to Whiterun, and those seem to be the normal kind. These red ones, if they're real, are some kind of anomaly, and the College wants to study several to see how they're different from the normal kind, and if it would be worth establishing some kind of cultivation of them. The place you're going, Blackreach, has dangerous denizens and is very dark, neither of which are actually a problem for you. And if something
should happen to go wrong - or, for some reason, you need to contact Lutecia - she managed to make some minor calibration adjustments to Loki and her own Device with Agito's help, so if you activate it, she'll be alerted and should be able to contact you! You sigh happily and wait for the ride to end.
Eventually it does, and you step out of the elevator and past the gold-metal control panel. The first thing you do is look up, and you're stunned at the starlike composition of the ceiling. It's almost comfortable, to be honest … certainly more than the river flowing around you. To your right, in the distance, is a huge glowing mushroom, and many smaller, dimmer mushrooms. To your left is a stone walkway crossing over a lake far below, leading to some kind of building. And straight ahead … you don't see much directly in front of you, just mist and dark. They did say that Nirnroot is usually found near water, but you only need a few, so maybe you should enjoy the sights and local delicacies first?
Where do you start your search?
[ ] Search to the north - mushrooms are wet, right?
[ ] Search to the south - it's a lake, it's bound to have
some of the things.
[ ] Search to the west - if there's not much to see, it means no one has searched it for plants!
DM Note: You entered at the southeast entrance, at the 'Skyrim' between the 'Derelict Pumphouse' and the 'War Quarters'.
