Firebird, a Worm AU/Xover?

By the Anthropologist, it's back!

So, PF is letting a lot leak through... might need to clamp down on that before Taylor goes mental. Maybe she'll eventually be left remembering two worlds, unsure which is hers!

Personal head-canon: the Nine got taken out by Accele!Taylor before they picked up Bonesaw, which means that in addition to being Miss-Not-Appearing-In-This-Fic, Riley gets to live a happy, normal, un-triggered life for once.

That's actually totally in character for him. He only really cares about very few people in the world, everyone else is either an asset or an obstacle to taking care of those people. He hadn't gotten close to Lisa, so if she ain't gonna help...
It's not the first time chibipoe wrote Brian like that. He was a jerkbag in Acceleration, too. It's just been over two years and we've forgotten.

While you're not wrong, it's more complicated than that. Take your pick:
  1. Save a young, teenage girl from an abusive guardian who should be arrested, in order to protect her from drugs and abuse, or
  2. Save your young, teenage sister from an abusive guardian who should be arrested, in order to protect her from drugs and abuse
They're both in shitty situations that are almost a mirror of each other in a lot of ways. The fact that he chose his sister over someone he doesn't know is hardly surprising.

Also, it seems like a somewhat false choice. The situation was not one where trying to help Dinah would automatically mean that some random god would strike Aisha dead on the spot.

He could have sought a solution that would save both Dinah AND Aisha. Sure, it might not have been easy to take out Coil in a way that would achieve that, but it was certainly possible (as ultimately happened). With effort, Brian could have tried to find a way to save both, or atleast seriously struggled with the whole thing. But he did not know Dinah personally, so he apparently did not really care enough to bother.

Aisha was not in the hands on an abusive guardian. Despite what fanon has told you, Aisha was not in her mother's custody - she was moved to her dad's place after the incident where Brian triggered. He wants to get custody because their father has no idea how to raise a girl, not because the man is abusive.

Hadn't his father basically checked out of it and more or less let her do whatever she wanted? Which is a very bad thing, to be honest.

He's hands-off because he knows that he'd only make things worse. He was very much a 'tough love' father to Brian, and he knows that trying to do the same with a small girl instead of a large, strong boy would be nothing but abuse.

Yeah. That is exactly what a young teenager doesn't need, but in this case the only alternative he has is kicking her ass, which is also a pile of no.

Hell, he even supported Brian claiming custody - it was the Mom who intended to press her claim again if she got the chance, thus bringing Family Court into the mess and requiring Brian to have a solid work history and visible income.

I'd say it was unbelievable that Child Services would give her the time of day, but considering the kind of shit that's happened in reality... I just have to sigh and shake my head.

Guys?

Don't be fucking stupid.

It's a generalisation of two similar but not exactly situations. If you're having trouble understanding that I'm highlighting the similarities of the situations, not outright saying Aisha was being physically and mentally abused to the same level Dinah was, that's your own problem.

Note:
almost a mirror of each other in a lot of ways
Not 'exactly a mirror in every way'.

Big difference.

In any case, the main point is that he couldn't recognise Dinah out of the other 350+k people in Brockton Bay. He's as likely to help her as any of you are as likely to actually care about someone you've never met: Other than acknowledging that she's in a shitty situation? Not at all.

err no sorry @Franklymydear coil is not and never has been Dinah's Guardian. he KIDNAPED her so no its not remotely the same situation.
I never said 'legal' guardian. He's providing for her (though hardly at a level you'd want), he's keeping her safe (from everyone other than himself), and he controls her life.

Except that what happened was Leviathan rolled into town, fucked up everything to the point that "I have a roof and more than $100." was all it took to convince people you were a capable guardian, and he was handed Aisha because people had better things to worry about.

He would have had that without Coil at all simply because the city was that shit.

Otherwise he would have had to find work and spend years working his way up to the point he had a decent bank statement that proved his income and a house, while attempting to have savings. In Brockton Bay. As a black, basically educated, criminal history, guy.

Yeah, I can totally see that happening in the provided timeframe before Aisha just cuts and runs, or gets herself killed because her father can't keep her in the house.

Brian needed Coil. Lisa wanting to take over Coil's organisation wasn't something Brian knew anything about until later, and even if he did he wouldn't have gone along with the incredible long-shot that that chance was.

she was moved to her dad's place after the incident where Brian triggered. He wants to get custody because their father has no idea how to raise a girl, not because the man is abusive.
That's pretty abusive to a young person as it is. No, it's certainly not to the same level as what Dinah's going through, but that's how Brian sees it because he's actually able to witness Aisha's declining personality and knows her personally.

Also:
Hadn't his father basically checked out of it and more or less let her do whatever she wanted? Which is a very bad thing, to be honest.

I'm definitely glad the S9 aren't in this fic. An S9 arc almost always drags a fic down as we stop all interesting character interactions for an entire arc. I also have the same issue with Endbringer fights too to be honest. I've read so many now that I generally just skim to the end.

Anyway, loving this fic so far and happy to see it updated recently!
