Phoebe: Yes. She's a good risk, being trusted tends to gain others' trust in return, and the people most likely to cause us problems were complicit in Selena's death. She would sooner die than join them and I have every expectation she would kill to stop problems for us.

Old home feels like an Act 3 goal and we've more or less just closed the book on Act 1 and gotten the question of where to go for Act 2.
We still look to be a child, so even if we got standing it would still end up needing a steward or something by their standards so that wouldn't get us as much freedom and sway as we'd like to believe. Maybe after coming out of Act 2 covered in glory and with lots of friends to back us, then we consider reclaiming the old home. Our stuff will keep. If the badguys were gonna get it, they'd have it already. It's not like the trail isn't already several weeks cold.

Act 2 is about getting back the dudes we had to leave behind and maybe having a talk with Mantrae to follow this one up the chain a bit. This is Fire Emblem, that isn't even a question.

Regarding Phoebe, I'm inclined to let her in on the secret. If only because she's nice and it would be one less person we have to worry about keeping it from. We will have to transform again in the future, after all. Bringing allies in on the secret gives us more room to work with in the long run. That, and I think Ryza wouldn't mind having a potential friend she doesn't have to hide everything about herself around. Ryza has already shown that she doesn't exactly like having to hide her nature all the time. Though it's also true she doesn't want people to be scared of her either. She wants to be accepted, and Phoebe hasn't shown herself incapable of that. Yet.

My biggest priority was to ensure that we have the social backing of the King, so we don't have people trying to kill us. Having a promised permanent home here seems like it would fulfill that requirement.

I do want to reclaim out original home in its entirety, but that's something that can come later.

The misspelling of permanent is far more irritating to me than it probably should be, but votes have already been cast so I guess I'll have to live with a minor spelling error :V

Jokes aside, I broadly concur with previous discussion. Bringing Phoebe I'm not tied to, I'd be willing to go the other way on that if need be, but she does seem trustworthy enough, and besides which her boss already knows and would be able to ensure her silence if she really, truly became a problem. I don't think it would be good, psychologically speaking, for Ryza to try to live in her old home. For one, it's going to be full of reminders that her parents are gone, which is probably not the best thing in the universe right now, and for two, it's extremely isolated, and Ryza needs socialization and emotional support. As for human social standing, we're already friends with Artemis, which counts for a lot, and the archduke will be giving us some form of residence, which also counts for quite a bit, and if we need or want more reputation among humans we can build it up later. Housing is a higher priority. And as for rescuing the others, well duh - that was the plan from the minute we decided to escape, rather than try to hulk out and break things. After that is when things potentially might get complicated, assuming the plot doesn't throw something else to focus on our way while we're doing the rescue mission.

I'm a little worried about telling Phoebe, but only on the basic principle of "The only way to keep something secret is to keep it secret". If we could tell her while editing out the manakete stuff, that'd be great, but it should be safe enough anyway.

Reclaiming our old home just doesn't sound psychologically healthy. I doubt they had much time to search every nook and cranny, anything we left should keep for a little while.

Under other circumstances, I'd be all over studying magic. Our dragon trick and our magics are our big shocking trump cards, and we need to maximize them as much as possible. But getting our bros out of the Pit of Despair is the time-critical issue. Hopefully after that we can cue up "Eye of the Tiger" and start the training montage.

As far as back home goes, the only thing there are objects we can fly back and retrieve at any time. We don't need to reclaim it to do that.

Thank you, I'm glad you like it.

It's interesting trying to write from Ryza's perspective. She's a child, but not quite a normal one. Given her real age she's going to have a degree of knowledge (from her parents no doubt giving her lessons, however informal) and life experience that's somewhat out of step with her emotional maturity. It's a fun 'almost human, but also not quite' realm of characterization to explore. I'm not sure if I consistently hit her character on the head with respect to @SoaringHawk218's conception of the character, but I enjoy trying.

If I see a good narrative opening I might write some omake at some point.
