[X] Stay and talk to the Heads. They might be able to provide some insight into what's going on, and you do have some questions for them. Besides, the Archmage will likely return soon, and he'll probably already be irritated. You don't want to make his mood worse by skipping his meeting.

[X] Suggest that the Revisionists use your story to show what manakete are really like. This will likely be polarizing: drawing more people to your side on the one hand, but also risking particularly hard-line anti-manaketes making a fuss. You have your protections, but it is a risk.

Gareth and Bantu: "Are we a joke to you?"

Then again, they're both from older games, so I suppose most wouldn't know about them. Gareth still hasn't made it into Heroes yet, the poor guy.
I am just an idiot, I've watched two different videos about Gareth multiple times each, I have no idea why I didn't think of him.

I am confused why no one is talking about that the dragonstones going to run out someday. After all it's not a renewable resource as no more manakete are being born.
The idea that limited fossil fuels reserves might be a problem in the future doesn't seem to have been considered (or at least not reported in a prominent way) until 1919 or so. As long as there are enough undiscovered or half-plundered dragon ruins around where new dragonstones can be found, it's not going to be anything more than a theoretical issue.

It's an inevitable one, given enough time, but it's not going to be politically significant until people realize just how little supply there is left. Or until the last dragon comes up with a way to not destroy her people's souls to throw fire at other people.

It hasn't been brought up in-quest, but in-world a few people are thinking and talking about @reliczexide's point. They're just in the vast, vast minority.

As for why: two points to add onto @GreatWyrmGold's are A: humans have gotten very good at using the dust efficiently/using gemstone to bulk out a mix, and B: there is actually a way to extend the life of a tome by recharging it, so dragonstone shards can last longer.

They are still finite, of course, but not for the foreseeable future in-world.

I feel like now I should be worried about some random asshat with the idea of breeding manaketes for dragonstones like cattle.
Is it wrong that I feel like at least one person would try that? (It's stupid and wrong, but I never underestimate human stupidity)

One more reason to get Ryza the hell away from a place full of people reliant on dragonstone dust in the middle of a country that runs on anti-dragon propaganda.

Chapter 4x: Princesses United (Artemis POV)
AN: I've been making some rolls for how things are going in the rest of the world, and I just wanted to give you all an insight into how Artemis is doing Fire Emblem Lord Things while Ryza's away.

As you crest another hill, you force yourself not to sigh as you see yet another sun-swept plain stretching out before you with only a few scattered, scrubby trees. You've traveled, but you've never gone this far north before. You'd heard, of course, that the pockets of woodland that dotted your homeland were few and far between here, but it's different to ride for days on end with seemingly no shelter or cover in sight.

Spirits, it's hot up here, too! Not as bad as the arid plateaus of the Imperial heartland are supposed to be (not that you'd ever been there; you'd skirted to the south when going to visit Apollo) but still! No wonder the Sun-worshippers live in this area, they get to see their blazing god all the time!

Actaeon nickers slightly, turning to look back at you. Reaching forward, you pet his neck gently. "You doing alright, buddy?" you ask softly. Mantrae (you still couldn't bear to use her title in your own head, Spirits you're still mad at her…) had at least treated him better than the Talon bandits, so he hadn't been physically harmed, but he was still a little skittish from being separated from you twice. The first night of his return, you'd actually slept in the stables with him, as the hands hadn't been able to keep him calm without your help.

You swore you'd never let anyone take him away from you again!

"Lady Artemis, are you well?"

Turning, you watch as your guide and fellow trots up to ride next to you, her long white cloak billowing behind her.

You'd never met Alina Sundaughter before, though you'd known her name even before Apollo had told you a bit about her. Apparently the youngest mage to ever be accredited by the Hall, as well as one of the few who chose to keep both her family name (and the titles and expectations that went with it) as well as her new mage-name.

You'd been a little wary when you'd first met her. Apollo's a smart kid, but he tended to get caught up in the legend of people and miss their imperfections. However, as you got to know her on the ride north, you found that under her image of a calm, elegant princess was a dry wit, genuine intelligence, and a steady determination to stand against Imperial aggression.

You certainly have to admit she has good taste in mounts. You'd never seen a unicorn before, but her Sunrise was certainly a beautiful creature: all shimmering silver hair with a long, gorgeous spiraling horn that looked to be made of pure gold poking from her forehead. She was also a patient creature, putting up with her less-than-perfectly-skilled rider with good grace. It was clear Alina was trying, but was either out of practice or had never fully mastered riding.

She's a better rider than Ryza, if nothing else. If only because she isn't quietly terrified of her own mount.

Drawing your mind back to the moment, you nod. "I am, Lady Alina," you say. "Do you think we will reach Castle Starhelm soon?"

Alina looks around, frowning slightly as she takes in all the tiny landmarks that she surely knows as well as you know the signs of Agrithe and the surrounding Kingdoms, before nodding. "We should," she says. "I do hope Lord Saitorius resists the urge to do anything foolish until we arrive."

A few days ago, not long after passing the Coastal Republic of Veicia which acted as the loosely-defined border between the Northern and Southern Kingdoms, your advance force had been engaged by elements of the Bloodhunter Talon chapter. It had been a tough battle, but without betrayal and treachery on their side the united Agrithian-Hornglade soldiers had soundly defeated them.

You glance over your shoulder, your eyes scanning the column of riders until you find what you're looking for: an awkward-looking young woman clumsily clinging onto the back of Phoebe's horse, while Alejandro rode next to them, chatting to both of them casually. During the battle, Elena had surrendered relatively early on to your fellow Southern noble, and he'd convinced her to join your side. She had clearly only joined the Talons recently, either in a bout of youthful adventurousness or fleeing some trouble at home, only to learn that a mercenary's life is often a lot uglier than the songs and tales describe. Still… even you'd been forced to acknowledge that she's a good girl at heart, if a little green with that axe of hers. She certainly hadn't been comfortable kidnapping children and working with bandits alongside her former comrades.

More important than the slight help she'd been in the battle, of course, was the information she'd been able to provide afterwards. The Bloodhunter Chapter had sent their prisoners deeper into the Empire, and she didn't know where. However, rather than withdraw, the mercenaries had then returned to Starhelm, and their leader had apparently even been negotiating directly with Lord Saitorius. Apparently, there had also been a man that Elena thought was an Imperial noble, but she'd awkwardly admitted she didn't know for sure.

You're pretty sure she's right. It would fit with the plan Father's messenger had delivered not long after you left with Alina.

"Based on previous experience," you say, "I get the feeling that's likely a vain hope."

"I know," Alina says, shading her eyes and peering at something in the distance. "But I can still hope, can't I? Hope is, after all, the balm of the soul." She frowns. "Looks like your men are returning; and they seem to be in a hurry."

Following her gaze, you notice Axton and Lancel riding towards you. The two yeomen had joined you in the middle of the battle with the Talons; their unexpected flanking maneuver helping to solidify your victory. You'd been happy to see them, and you'd been even happier to hear that Ryza had made it back to Agrithe safely. You'd been a little worried for her ever since she'd said she was going back to her home; it is right on the border between the Kingdoms and the Empire, but it seems her wonderful combination of skill, luck, and people skills had seen her through danger yet again.

"Well, I guess we're going to find out if foolish things have or have not been done," you say.

"That we shall."

The pair of you watch as the two yeomen ride up to meet you. "My Lady, Lady Sundaughter," Axton says. "We spotted a force on the march, under the banner of Starhelm. They seem to be heading towards the Empire."

Alina frowns. "Were there any other banners with them?" she asks. "Father strongly suggested that we should work to form a united response, rather than jumping too fast and risking everything." She glances at you. "The message your father's informant sent, the one that described the Regent's plan… was there anything about this?"

You pull out the letter and scan it. Father clearly kept the original copy, you recognize Pincana's hand, but you trust that he gave you all the important points. "Yes, here," you say. "Apparently, the plan was to manufacture a casus belli to expand the war beyond the Divine Realm. If Lord Starhelm invades…"

"…then the Regent will have his excuse," Alina says. "Sol, we have to stop him! We're not ready yet, and from what I've heard the Divine Realm's still hoping for a diplomatic solution! They're not ready to come to our defense yet if a war starts!" She looks to Axton. "Where are they? Can we get ahead of them?"

Axton nods. "Yes, Your Ladyship," he says. "There are infantry among the Starhelm host; we can ride to block their path relatively easily."

You nod, grimacing. You'd hoped to only have to fight Imperial invaders when Father sent you up here, but it seemed fate was not that kind. As you signal for your men to advance at speed and follow the scouts, you allow yourself to hope that you and Alina can talk the man out of his course.

After all, as Alina said, hope is the balm of the soul.

Many tense minutes pass before you see the marching column of Starhelm men. This is a full muster: levies walking with men-at-arms. If that force reaches the Empire… well, no reasonable person would see it as anything less than an invasion. Which means you have to stop them.

Alina presses her hand to the tome at her side, summoning up some light magic and drawing an arrow pointing to the two of you in the air, along with what you think is intended to be a set of moving lips. Noticing your gaze, Alina flushes. "I... am not the best of artists, especially not with magic," she says. "There are other mages I know who can write words and even sentences with magic, but I am not yet among them."

You nod. "I've met one of those, so I know what you mean," you say. Well, technically you'd never seen Ryza write words in lightning, but from how detailed her maps are you're pretty sure she could if she wanted to.

After a few seconds, the column comes to a halt, and a moment later a single rider detaches to approach you. Nodding to Alina, the two of you ride a bit forwards, to meet with the cavalier on relatively neutral ground.

A few minutes later, the three of you are staring at each other across the short distance. "Lady Hornglade," the cavalier says, bowing before glancing at you. "And…"

"Lady Artemis Cartese, of Agrithe," you say.

"Truly?" The cavalier studies you for another few moments before sighing. "I see. I am Sir Kaneus of Starhelm. For what purpose do you wish to speak?"

Alina peers back at the small army. "Is Lord Saitorius not here himself?" she asks.

"… My lord is… grieving," Sir Kaneus says carefully. "He has tasked me with this… expedition."

"Your task being an invasion into the Empire?" you ask. "Please, you must not. Lord Saitorius's children are not there: we defeated a Talon force, and they confirmed that all the kidnapped children were sent deeper into-"

"My orders are clear," Sir Kaneus repeats quietly. "An insult has been made not only to my lord, but to all the Kingdoms. A response is demanded."

Alina shakes her head. "And there will be!" she says. "We aren't surrendering, but we need to prepare. Our brothers and sisters in the South are on our side, Lady Artemis's presence proves that. A united front-"

"My orders are clear."

You hiss; honor and obedience are important of course, but so is common sense! "You've surely seen the Talons meeting with your lord!" you say. "Please, if you can just delay your attack rather than play right into the Regent's hands! We have evidence that this is a plot, a scheme to give him the excuse he needs to invade us all! Please, you must see that!"

"She's right, Sir Kaneus," Alina says. "I understand Lord Saitorius's grief, I truly do. Canopus and Velorum are my friends, as are some of the others who were taken. But to save them-"

Sir Kaneus holds up a hand. "I know," he says, and you finally recognize just how tired he looks. "Sun as my witness, I know. I know, and so does my lord, but what choice do we have? No… no father wants to outlive his children."

Fury courses through you, of course that bastard Justinian would have made it clear the consequences of not going along with his scheme, especially since he still had the plausible deniability that Imperial regulars had not done the deed! You glance at Alina, who bows her head sadly. "I'm sorry, Sir Kaneus, but I can't let you do this," she says. "My father's orders were for me to delay any war until we're ready. For Sol's sake, stand down!"

"I cannot," Sir Kaneus says gently. "I know that King Hornglade is right. He is a wise man, one who… can afford to be wise, in these times." He looks back at his men for a long moment before turning his tired eyes back to you. "But I cannot obey. I cannot stand down."

"Neither can we."

Tense silence fills the air for several long seconds before the cavalier sighs. "Then there is nothing more to be said," Sir Kaneus says, turning his horse. "I wish you good fortune in the war that is to come." With that, he rides back towards his men.

Alina hisses as she watches him leave. "Sunburn," she snarls. "May the tyrant walk forever in darkness for what he's set in motion."

You nudge Actaeon closer and pat her on the shoulder. "He will," you say. "Once you and I and our other friends and allies send him to the Void where he belongs!"

With that, the two of you turn to prepare your men for the battle none of you want, but all of you must fight.

I also figured I'd give everyone a heads-up on the vote since I'm already posting this.

Combining the two variants of the Apollo vote, the tally is currently 14 for talking to the Heads and 10 for finding Apollo. Having the Revisionists be more open about Ryza's personal story seems to be a shoe-in.

Somehow it took seeing how Artemis is doing without us for me to think that if this were a game then Ryza is basically written out of the roster for several chapters to let everyone else catch up in stats around midgame.

Would Ryza rejoin the roster with boosted stats to match her time missing?
I know we dont get to show up Big Damn Heroes style but it would be cool.

I think so, it's not as if she's been idle. She just probably doesn't get as many levels as those consistently fighting during that time.

Which is actually probably better come to think of it, means she would have more chances for even more stat boosts.

Right now I just have the Frederick memes flying around in my head as players use us as a physical wall that deals magic damage.
Actually, are we tanky? Have we taken any actual hits? I don't remember honestly.
Edit: What are our stats? Now I need answers.

Edit: What are our stats? Now I need answers.

When I'd originally been toying with the idea of using FE stats, I'd decided that Ryza would have high Magic, Resistance and Skill, moderate Speed, Luck and HP, and low Strength and Defense. So she's very tanky against magic enemies, but if anyone ever actually hits her with a physical weapon (or god forbid a bow) she would go down hard. Her dragon-form would have Myrrh-esque boosts, so she'd be a lot tougher, but that would have been a very limited resource.

If this were a true FE game, Ryza's greatest strength would probably be her flight: she can avoid fights she doesn't want to have, which has happened in-story a few times (the bandits outside Miau come to mind: she got flanked, but was able to fly up to avoid melee combat.)

About what I'd expect, honestly. Powerful flying magic user from day one makes her absolutely one of the best units in the game, but some of the typical magic user weaknesses of letting someone get a physical hit in (doubly so since she has multiple weaknesses with bows and dragonslaying weapons) mean you would want to be very careful with your positioning for Ryza, particularly since she's probably a lord unit meaning game over on death.

Also, I suspect she would lose out on one of the biggest utilities flying units usually bring to the party - Ryza is tiny meaning she isn't going to be able to ferry others around the map with rescue dropping unless this is a Pair-Up game.

though you'd known her name eve before Apollo had told you a bit about her.
"even"

It was clear Alina was trying, but was either out of practice or had never fully mastered ride.
"riding"?

"I do hope Lord Saitorius resists the urge to anything foolish until we arrive."
"to do anything"

not long after passing the Costal Republic of Veicia
"Coastal"

During the battle; Elena had surrendered relatively early on to your fellow Southern noble
I'm pretty sure this is supposed to be a comma.

so I know what you men,"
"mean"

Considering this, would Ryza end up playing like an flying thunderbolt with enough movement to almost match a Pegasus knight? Cause that seems like an easy way to counter so many artillery spells and and just darting around the map being a nuisance.
(If she could get Awakening Galeforce she would be so busted lmao)

Too awkward to be a complete fabrication, too suspicious to be honest.

I notice that Fire Emblem on Forums has a manakete supplement now, so I might as well sketch out what I think Ryza might look like in that system.
FEF doesn't support manakete using any other weapons (including tomes), so I'll have to homebrew a bit. Since I'm not actually pitching this as a character concept to my GM, I'll keep it simple:
Ryza follows the manakete rules when applicable (e.g. when using a dragonstone), but she does not have the manakete class. She gets the base stats of her non-manakete class, and the 330 progression points non-manaketes would usually spend.

Class: Light Trainee
(For some reason, thunder magic falls under Light Trainee and not Anima Trainee.)
Affinity: Guess

Progression Rates:
  • Health: 60%
  • Strength: 15%
  • Magic: 70%
  • Skill: 50%
  • Luck: 30%
  • Defense: 15%
  • Resistance: 55%
  • Speed: 35%
Initial Stats:
  • Health: 16
  • Strength: 1
  • Magic: 4
  • Skill: 4
  • Luck: 3
  • Defense: 1
  • Resistance: 4
  • Speed: 3
  • Constitution: 4
  • Aid: 3
  • Movement: 4
Skills:
  • Character Skill: Charisma
    • Allied units within 3 spaces of your character gain +10 bonus to Hit and Evasion. The owner of this skill does not gain the bonus. Multiple sources of Charisma do not stack.
  • Personal Skill: Gregarious
    • If Ryza is within 3 spaces of 3 allied units, her support bonuses are increased by 50% until her next turn.
  • Personal Fault: Peaceful
    • If a unit within 3 spaces is reduced to 0 HP, Ryza suffers -2 Attack Speed until her next turn.
Initial inventory:
  • Lightning (or its tablet equivalent)
  • Druk
  • Vulnerary

Very cool. The only thing I'd suggest is having Ryza have at least 5 movement: she may not have the best speed in the game sense, but she's not as slow as an armor knight.

She's not a Green, sadly. Though she's probably just under them in terms of ZOOM ZOOM.

Actually, Black manakete were generally the next fastest after green, since they tended towards stealth and evasion.
