Finding the Spark (Pathfinder 1E Quest)

Oh! What an exciting performance!

I wonder who's writing the lines here. Because they sure want to be seen doing this.

Damage delt is surprisingly low for a real attemp. For something like that, I'd go for overkill.

And thinking on it, a real attempt would nessitate making it hard to bring him back.

This feels more like political theater.
----
@DragonParadox do Sirim and Kori have their level ups? Primarily asking for Sirim's Wild Arcana.

-----
Anyway, my first instinct is to attemp Locate Object.
This feels cheap, because it wasn't intended to be real, so hopefully the giant only dimension door'd away.

Mina casts See Invisibly, then hands out Mythic Heroism to Cob then Gorok.

I can't even begin to make a good guess who would want to assassinate the governor. Well, I could, but there are too many possible culprits and not enough evidence to narrow it down.

We're close enough to the governor and princess that we can approach and be effective within one round. The only issue is how our presence is going to be interpreted by the princess's guards, and the princess herself.

Helping him now is probably going to pay off more for us than running off after the assassin(s). They could be anywhere by now, while the dying governor and princess remain sitting ducks. The attack on him could have even been a distraction to draw her guards away for an attempt against the princess herself.

The guards would just move themselves and the princess around the governor, rather than abandon her, imo.

And I'm worried that us getting closer to the governor will have the guards react in a way that cost's time to sort out/defuse.

@DragonParadox can we be confident that Leontas has healing potions?
Also, I can't imagine that the guards don't have healing methods on their person they can use.

Cool beans.
The rich merc who has an investment in the status quo - who is trusted to have an investment in the governor alive if it's thought about at all thev - can heal the governor while guarding him.

Our actions are better spent gambling that we can find this giant.

Need to check what spells are on Cob's and Gorok's rings.

Edit: Don't know what's on them, was hoping Cob at least would have See Invisiblility.
Both Locate Object and Dimension Door are long range.

Had a thought; we were allowed to be physically close to the governor, so we shouldn't be chased away from the area by the guards if we don't head towards the princess/governor - It might be worthwhile to ask one (they have True Sight) if the giant was transformed or disguised.
True seeing is 120 ft range though.

I'm guessing that the giant was much more than 120ft away from the guards, @DragonParadox?

Would have been great if Kori and Sirim had their level ups in place, especially for Sirim. 4th level spells open up a lot of options. Oh well, we still have plenty of cards to play.

@DragonParadox, did Kori get a good enough look at the assassin's bow to target it with a Locate Object spell? How far away was the assassin when he attacked? Is Pisca with us by any chance?

The regular loadout for them is supposed to be Invisibility and Divine Favor for Cob and Mirror Image and Shield for Gorok.

Oh yeah, he was several blocks over shooting over the buildings

  1. He did yes
  2. 300 ft if you could fly there, three times that going by the streets
  3. He is not, he is sticking with the drow as he's preparing him to drink spaceship fluids as promised

I'd hate to leave the city without a supportive power figure in place.

Had he rolled differently, it may have been just enough to put him down for good. But then, it might be that the result is not as important as the attempt itself.

My first thought is that we should make use of our best abilities. We are ghosts: trackers, spies and silent assassins in equal measure. Leave the governor to Leontas and his crew; that's what they are hired for.

If this was indeed intended as a statement, there will likely be something intentionally left for us to find, but maybe if we act quicker than they anticipated we will be able to glimpse something more.

I'm trying to see how to get to the Giant's last location asap, and I'm only coming up Mythic Haste. (I'm not spending a teleport scroll to move 300 feet).

[ ] Plan Running (draft):
-[ ] Round 1: Sirim casts Mythic Haste on the party. Kori Casts Locate object on the bow, and they all start running towards the bow, or if that can't be detected, then where the attack came from. Mina casts Mythic Heroism on Cob.
-[ ] If the bow can't be detected, then Cob casts invisibility on Sirim, and the two race ahead to where the attack came from for Sirim to cast Locate Object from there. (Cob might use shadow teleport to keep up). [note1]. The two proceed to chase the target if it is moving while the rest of the party try to keep up. If they catch up, they keep hidden until the rest of the party arrive, and Sirim casts Invisibility on Cob if he thinks the casting won't attract attention. Unless they think that the target is going to teleport out again, then they try to interrupt that.
-[ ] Other buffs: Mina casts See Invisibility on herself, then Mythic Heroism on Gorok, Maybe Hermean Potentials from herself and Kori, too. Other things I haven't thought up.
-[ ] (note1) If Kori's and Sirim's Locate Object can't find anything, then we try to use (magically enhanced) tracking (scent?), despite the rain. As a last resort we take an hour for Kori's divination ability.

Okay, how does this look? It's the quickest we can reasonably get into the air. The Abductor Beast is a fast flier and it can carry all of us. Searching from the air gets us to the assassin's last known location much faster, not only because of the overall shorter distance, but also because we aren't going to have to deal with panicked civilians getting in our way.

I'm assuming Gorok has an Ant Haul spell prepared instead of Magic Fang, since we've been keeping Warty in statuette form while we're in Cassomir. Is that all right, @DragonParadox?

I still think this is probably a distraction to make some sort of move on the princess, but there is only so much we can do here to help the governor.

[X] Unidentified Flying Abductor Beast
-[X] Kori casts Dark Whispers on the party, plus Leontas and the princess's prominent Ulfen guard. He quickly explains to the men that we are going after the assassin and they shouldn't be alarmed by the appearance of our mount, if they spot it. Leontas should know what that means. He then uses Inspired Spell to cast Locate Object in order to find the assassin's bow. The range of both spells is doubled, to 1,280 feet, using the Enlarge Spell Metamagic Rod.
-[X] Sirim uses Wild Arcana to cast Invisibility sphere on Gorok, then casts Lesser Angelic Aspect.
-[X] Mina uses the Encouraging Spell Metamagic Rod to cast Mythic Heroism on Cob and Gorok.
-[X] Gorok activates the Abductor Beast Figurine a moment before Sirim finaihes casting his Invisibility Sphere spell, then casts Ant Haul on it.
-[X] Cob climbs up on Gorok's back after Gorok mounts the Abductor Beast, while the Abductor clasps Kori and Mina in its tentacles as Sirim hides in Gorok's shadow.
-[X] Once everyone is properly situated, the party will take to the air to begin hunting the assassin. Kori will provide directions, starting at where the assassin launched his attacks if we aren't immediately in range of the bow.
--[X] In flight, Mina will cast See Invisibility on herself, then cast Mirror Image from her ring. If she has time before we get into a fight, she will recover a See Invisibility spell using her 2nd level Pearl of Power and cast it into her ring for Cob. Sirim will cast Mythic Haste on the group, Abductor Beast included, and Mage Armor on himself, and Kori will activate his Cloak of Darkness.

"He quickly explains to the men that we are going after the assassin " <- Is this an explanation of a diplomacy roll? If it' a diplo to not freak out about the abductor beast, maybe we should bluff?: "We got a good look at the assassin"

Also, shouldn't we haste/even mythic haste the Abductor Beast Figurine?

Definitely not a Diplomacy roll. We're not trying to influence anyone's attitude. This is just giving them a heads up that we're on the case.

Haste will probably be cast soon, but it's too soon for such a short duration spell, IMO. The Abductor Beast has a fly speed of 80. That means it can reach the assassin's last known position in one round (it has a "running" flight speed equal to 4x its normal speed, so 320 feet per round). We'll reach the location in seconds, effectively no sooner with or without the spell.

When a spell only lasts 36 seconds, you don't want to use it too early.

What do we use Dark Whispers for? I don't think we will be in communication with anyone but our crew, so maybe have Sirim warn Leontas and have the crusader answer what questions may arise, if any; he is a part of the governor's escort instead of a voice in one's head.

Edit: will the Abductor Beast be visible under this plan? It is summoned after Invisibility is cast.

It lets Kori remain in contact with Leontas and that guard from up to 1280 feet away, and vice versa. We've used the spell with Leontas before, so he knows it provides two-way communication. If there is an attack on the princess, he can let us know if we're too far away to hear it.

Telepathy would work for the warning, but Sirim doesn't have the range to communicate beyond 60 feet, and the Ulfen guard might react poorly to the effect. Dark Whispers actually produces audible sound, so that should be less disconcerting. I want the guard to know what we're doing in case he is under some effect like See Invisibility or True Seeing. Otherwise the surprise!Abductor Beast might cause him to react poorly.

Gonna edit my plan to have Kori use the Enlarge Spell Metamagic Rod to double the range of his Locate Object and Dark Whispers spells. 1280 feet instead of 640 feet could make all the difference, especially if the assassin used Dimension Door to flee.

I was just going to have Sirim use it now, and then use one or two Surge points to cast it again later, but that thinking came from my "run trough the streets" plan, and I had no idea how fast the Abductor could fly.
That said, if there is a foot chase, I do think we should use Mythic Haste as soon as our target is kinda-close, that way Gorok can move, Fleet Charge, and full attack, giving additional chances to hit with his poisoned glaive.

If there's time, Mina should recharge her See Invisibility and put it into Cob's ring, since he has the best perception score. He can cast Invisiblity on someone.

Or she can out it into the third ring, and he can just use that? She can cast it in flight and give him the ring to use after if there's a spare moment or immediate need. I'd prioritise putting See Invisiblity into the ring over her Mage Armour

I've updated the plan to have Mina cast Mirror Image on herself from her ring in order to make room in it for another See Invisibility spell. Once we land or have time, she can she can pass the ring to Cob so he can cast the spell, too.

Oops, my mistake. Forgot exactly how the spell worked for a minute. I've updated my plan to have Gorok activate it right before Sirim's spell is cast.

I am just happy our Abductor Beast is finally seeing some use. Probably should name it, too. How does Abby sound?

Still hope we will use it to actually abduct someone one day, yoink a mage from the opposing party and then fly straight up. Not everyone has Feather Fall prepared.

Damn, no one is expecting the invisible giant assassin.

@Goldfish shouldn't we send someone in party to help heal Governor? At least give him a healing potion or something? Leo is there to vouch for us since he is one of the governor's men now.

DP already confirmed that Leontas, at the very least, has multiple CLW potions at hand. I'm sure other members of the princess's group also have some methods of healing available, between wands, potions, spells, etc.

Fair enough, hopefully we can catch giant then.

I imagine they are using invisibility and some kind of equipment to quiet steps or something.

I doubt they are a giant at all, at least not now. More likely, it was a regular Medium-sized assassin using something like an Enlarge Person or Righteous Might spell effect to grow to Large-size. That would give them a height advantage to make firing easier while also significantly increasing the damage from their arrows.

Going back to Medium-size after taking the shots also adds an easy layer of obfuscation to further hide their trail.
