Finding the Spark (Pathfinder 1E Quest)

Sorry, dude.

I'm just kinda anal retentive when it comes to tough combat scenarios, and try to micro-manage them to the extreme.
It's not you. I've been told pretty much since a sword without a hilt that my ideas are bad. And it's followed along in pretty much every quest I've taken part in.

Seeing "here's what you wanted but not bad" just put all that back in the light?

I very much do not think your ideas are bad and for the record I have that happen to me as well, basically everyone does at one point or another. I know it can feel discouraging, but this is how plans get refined. If you are the one to embolden a course of action that is worth every bit as much as the vote that finally goes through. We are all in this to shape the story in our own way.

I was one of those who thought we should give this place a wide berth, because I am with Iolda on that one point, and because one might find an encounter like this and have less luck with the initial rolls. But then I didn't want to ruin the fun, and so I kept out of voting. If we aren't poking our nose in every crevice, what kind of adventurer are we?

Now, though, I don't want to back out. A CR 7 at half-HP is like a CR 3.5, right?

[x] Maximum Effort

[X] Leave, you are outnumbered and devils usually keep their word to the letter at least, in this case the letter is quite clear

It's a tough choice, I really want to vote for "maximum effort", but I'm afraid that it is too dangerous.

Does Warty get penalized for ranged slime attacks in this weather? On one hand, there's a thunderstorm, on the other, it's a slurk shooting in water.

Bullrushing entangles one in slime as well, and the guy did just puff out his wings making himself an easier target...

Huh... I'd say the demon is close enough and he's comfortable enough with the rain for that not to be a problem for him.

@Goldfish , I am studing character sheets, and I have a question about Dampen Presence.
As a prerequisite. it has rank 5 in Stealth. But Cob, despite his huge Stealth modiefier, has only 4 ranks in Stealth. How did he managed to receive such feat?

Cob got that through a Rogue Talent. The Talent version ignores the prerequisites.

I forgot to include Dampen Presence as one of his Talents in the Class Features line on Cob's character sheet.

Oh, thank you for clarification.
But how did Cob acquired this talent? He is not a Rogue, he is an Unchained Rogue. Unchained Rogue's Talent list does not include Dampen Presence.
That listing isn't quite as comprehensive as it should be. Probably because the source material was published after the Unchained Rogue was added to the PFSRD and no one got around to updating it.

OK, looks like we are going to try to bluff and kill our way out of this

May Desna be with you. She would no doubt approve in spirit

    [X] Maximum Effort
-[X] Mina targets the Devil with Glitterdust. If she has a chance in the following round, Mina either uses her Evil Eye Hex on the Devil to decrease its attack bonus if it isn't Blinded, or it's AC if it is Blinded.
-[X] Kori targets the Devil with a Fungal Stun Vial. If he has a chance in the following round, Kori casts Bless.
-[X] Warty targets the Devil with his ranged slime attack. If he has a chance in the following round, Warty will use his slime attack, either targeting the Devil if necessary or one of the Hellhounds if not.
-[X] Iolda targets the heavily injured Hellhound with a Magic Missile spell and our Iruxi allies charge to finish it off. If she has a chance in the following round, Iolda targets the Devil with a Magic Missile spell unless she needs to help the other Iruxi with the Hellhounds. The Iruxi continue focusing on the Hellhounds if necessary, only turning their attention to the Devil if the situation allows for it.
-[X] Gorok moves to engage the Devil. He Fights Defensively (+2 Dodge bonus to AC) and uses Shield of Swings (+4 Shield bonus to AC), raising his AC to 25 but halving his damage and decreasing his attack bonus by -4.
-[X] Cob moves to Flank the Devil (+2 bonus to attacks) and Sneak Attack. If the Devil was Blinded by Mina's spell, Cob uses the Debilitating Injury aspect of his Sneak Attack to decrease its AC. If it was not Blinded, he instead chooses to impair it's attack bonus.

Well, at the worst we maybe can read the new chapter of "Winding Ways and Cunning Devices"... :(

Fingers crossed! 🤞

I wish we had taken the chance to leave without a fight, but this isn't completely hopeless.

Mina's spell has a 45% chance of Blinding the Devil for 4 rounds and the Fungal Stun Vial has a 65% chance of Stunning it for 1d2 rounds. If either of those work, Warty has a much better chance of successfully sliming the Devil.

If it's Blinded or Stunned, it's SLAs become a good deal less dangerous for a short time, not to mention it's pure combat ability.

Cob has a decent chance of inflicting serious damage even with the Devil's DR being an issue, if he can successfully Flank and Sneak Attack. That should be doable with Gorok playing tank. If we get lucky and Cob's new dagger ends up being an Evil Outsider Bane weapon, that could make all the difference.

If the fight goes into another round and Kori can cast Bless, everyone will be more likely to be able to hit through the Devil's AC.

We really need that Glitterdust spell or stun vial to work, though. Both would be great, but if neither does we're in real trouble.

Maybe whoever the Devil was out here fighting is still alive and willing to help us, too?

EDIT: Just remembered that Warty's slime is a Ranged Touch Attack. That means he's much more likely to succeed against the Devil 17 Touch AC, even if not Blinded or Stunned. Only a 40% chance, but that's a lot better than 5%.

Arc 4 Post 8: Devil's Due
Devil's Due

6th of Rova 4707 A.R. (Absalom Reckoning)

The sensible thing to do, the sane thing to do, is to bow your head to the monster and flee, hope that it will glut its murder-lust upon its quarry, and forget anything as lowly as you ever crossed its path. Something clinks in your pack, a reminder of the weapons within—each one would have cost all the coin you had scrounged up when you left the tribe—as you press to the surface of your mind squirming sweet words of flattery: "Great Lord, know that we did not mean to interrupt your hunt, we but saw flame in the midst of such a great tumult of water and air and were much amazed."

Even as the thing's contempt simmers and grows, all trace of surprise from its mind long since gone, you look left and right at your companions, iruxi, goblin and burnlander mage. You trust them and they trust you, they know you for a liar and a skilled one at that, and yet they know also your lies are for foes.

A flip of the hand, a twist of two fingers, it might have been taken for a nervous twitch and yet its meaning is clear and practiced between the four of you: 'Kill on the mark.'

Gorok shuffles closer to Warty, Mina takes a deep breath, Cob licks his lips over uneven teeth

"Please, please take this generous gift..." you 'fumble' with the strings of your pack.

Akorian Bluff: 1d20+14 = 30 vs Salikotal Sense Motive: 1d20+16 = 18 -> Salikotal is Flat Footed (Does not get Dex or Dodge Bonuses; Cannot take Immediate Actions)
Salikotal Will Save vs Stun Vial = 1d20+7 =
25 (Success)

The next thing the devil sees is the flash blazing blue light, like one of the thunderbolts had struck down onto its horned head. Yet when the light clears the hate in those burning eyes still shines too clear, but you aren't the only one with a gift for the fiend. An almighty harking sound comes from Warty and a glob of slurk slime pins it to the wood of the tree, infernal grace reduced to some grotesque flapping flayed thing in an instant.

Warty Ranged Touch Attack: 1d20+3 = 17 (Success VS Flat Footed Touch AC) -> Salikotal Entangled (Stuck in place, -2 Attack Rolls and -4 Dexterity)

As Mina blows a corona of gold upon the fiend, alas still not managing to blind the thing, Gorok charges, clawed feet biting into the wet earth and charred roots, axe swinging in a deadly arc to take advantage of the moment of shock. Not lightly to devils die to the touch of common steel, that all who dare to listen to tales of such things know. But strength and skill and luck still count, that every hunter knows too. The axe bites deep and burning blood mixes with the rain as the hounds rage.

Salikotal Will Save vs Glitterdust = 1d20+7 = 24 (Success)
Salikotal takes 10 Damage -> Now at 28/76 HP

One of the beasts manages to bite at Cob's heel as the goblin too scarpers away to deal with the more dangerous foe first. The looted dagger that you had taken from the dead-thing whose soul still hangs around your neck parts bloodied devil's hide like parchments, snaps weakened ribs like kindling as the goblin burrows into into his vitals on the weakened left side.

Cob now at 27/34 HP
Salikotal takes 20 Damage -> Now at 8/76 HP -> Bane Dagger Revealed as Devil Bane

Initiative:
Akorian, Mina, Salikotal, Cob, Gorok

Vaguely you are aware of the fact that the hound Gorok had tangled with is even worse off than it had been as Iolda's magic peppers its hide, but your eyes are on the fight, on Gorok. You run forward, reach for the tip of his tail, and whisper a spell of warding against wicked things in the old tongue by which you were named. Hope it's enough...

Hellhound Two takes 7 Damage -> Now at 5/30

You only catch a glimpse of Mina through the rain, running around the other side of the tree, her face alight with purpose. She turns her head up to look the thing in the fiend's eyes and sings a single note, dreadfully pure, like a dagger of glass through the cacophony of the storm. The fiend goes slack in the tangle of slime, the sudden shifting in its weight making it fall from the tree like some monstrous scab.

Caster Level Check Mina: 1d20 +4 = 23 (Success) -> Salikotal Fortitude Save vs Ear Piercing Scream: 1d20+9 = 10 (Critical Failure) ->Damage: 2d6 = 9

Salikotal takes 9 Damage -> Salikotal Slain

How do you deal with the Hellhounds?

[] The things are said to be a lot smarter than ordinary beasts, maybe you can get one of them to surrender and though the artifice of the band explain what is going on

[] Continue the fight
-[] Kill them all
-[] Try to take one alive

[] Write in

OOC: I know that a SR Yes evocation is a terrible thing for a CL 4 witch designed around crowd control and SoDs to use on a much higher level adversary, but at that point the devil was slimed and surrounded so Mina judged that more debuffs were not as needed as more damage. Out of character, as soon as it was the devil's turn it would have teleported out of there. Vengeance Devils are assassins, not the kind to stand and fight at the best of times. 'A giggling goblin with a bane dagger in their innards while covered in slurk slime' is not the best of times.

Woohoo, praise Desna! 🎉

Man, I've been on the edge of my seat waiting to see how this would turn out.

Shame Cob's dagger is only Devil Bane instead of Evil Outsider Bane, but that doesn't matter for this fight. It did the trick and we're all alive to tell the tale.

Now's it's time to loot and scoot.

[X] Continue the fight
-[X] Kill them all
--[X] Gorok and the other Iruxi quickly skin the dead Hellhounds while Mina heals Cob. Kori examines the slain Devil's remains with Detect Magic.

I'm confused.
The devil was killed. But.... how?

Edit: @DragonParadox if it's not too much work - and this is wholly a consequnce of me being lazy - would you mind adding the DCs of stun vials and glitterdusts and such in the reported combat logs?

It'll save me (and other curious readers) from checking the DCs when we want to see what ou rchances of success were.

Edit edit: I want a reward from Desna from this. And not loot or a buff or anything trivial like that. A proper Desna reward:
A bro-fist from one punk to another.
