Finding the Spark (Pathfinder 1E Quest)

[X] Goldfish

I think that if a halfling carrying harpy manages to get away somehow, we should either use bluff or threaten it, saying that we are going to hunt it down unless it drops him.

[x] Halflings Aren't On the Menu!

Do we get dreams on level-ups? Never had I felt such a drive to get more XP.

Update tomorrow as soon as I handle the character sheets. I'd do it today, but it's tricky to keep everything in mind without a sheet and I do not want to mess up the math.

  • [X] Halflings Aren't On the Menu!
-[X] Mina casts a Web spell, aimed to snare as many of the Harpies carrying Halflings as she can manage.
-[X] Kori casts Searching Shadows, using it to capture the furthest Harpy which was not caught by Mina's spell. If he fails to capture the Harpy, he instead tries to snag the Halfling.
-[X] Cob moves to engage the final Harpy and Iolda targets it with a Magic Missile spell.
-[X] Warty assists Gorok with dealing with the Harpy he is fighting.
-[X] The other Iruxi move to deal with the remaining Harpy if it does anything but attempt to flee. If it does flee, they will instead help against the other Harpies, depending on the results of the party's attempts to stop them.

Arc 4 Post 3: Of Song and Shadow
Of Song and Shadow

5th of Rova 4707 A.R. (Absalom Reckoning)

Shadow and web, all from sorcery spun, spells lost among the screams. They are quick... so quick, enough to escape the strands of Mina's, though one tangles themselves in your own, dropping the halfling youngster she had been about to sweep away in a flurry of wing and talon.

"Yo Ho!" Cob lets out a whistling scream almost too big for his small body as he jumps up to grab onto the legs of another unfortunate halfling, then using her to swing upward like a pendulum to sink his bone dagger into the guts of the raider and drag is down with his weight. Little wonder she screams and drops all in her claws, rising to follow her more fortunate sisters.

Raider Two and Three save against Web
Raider Four Entangled -> Drops Halfling
Raider Five takes 16 Damage -> Now at 22/38 -> Drops Halfling

The one who had the misfortune to meet Gorok tries to follow suit, only to earn another cut of the axe and then a strike from an furious Warty, back arching for battle he releases a jet of slime that strikes and hardens against the harpy, causing her to tumble onto the hard stone. There's a thump of a spear striking flesh and the too-bright spark of Iolda's magic cast in desperation. The harpy does not drop its prisoner.

Raider One takes 10 Damage -> Now at 21/38
Raider One is Entangled
Raider Two takes 9 Damage -> Now at 29/38
Raider Six Takes 3 Damage -> Now at 35/38

Thus two halflings are carried into the air screaming, talons digging into their flesh as the last one left behind starts to sing, not even caring about the glancing stab across her left leg by a spear thrown with more enthusiasm than skill by one of Gorok's fellows. It's beautiful and dreadful, a hush of dreaming fallen over all the caravan. Warty looks like he might shake it off for a moment, but then he too stares wide eyed at the raider.

The whole plan is now unveiled before your still clear eyes as if they had just explained to to you: 'Snatch what they can, use the song to cover their escape.'

Will Saves (DC 16): Akorian; Cob; Gorok; Mina; Warty; Iolda; Iruxi 1, 2, 3
Cob, Gorok, Warty, Mina, Iolda, and Iruxi Warrior 1 and 2 Captivated by Song

Your hand goes to your sword before your mind had even grasped what you are seeing. Wounded and battered as they may be the remaining raiders are descending again, dropping their prizes in their haste to free their sister and, one would assume, tear out your throat. I'm probably too heavy to carry off and feast on. That is when you realize you had frozen in place in shock at the sudden turn... and they do not realize it's not entrancement. They seem to be focusing on the single one of the iruxi to shake the effect, and to be fair he is waving a spear menacingly at them.

Akorian Bluff: 1d20+14 = 33 (Success)

It is said that to one of the People darkness is ever a friend and so you conjure it to much squawking and screaming, though the snare song does not die. Also among the People it is said that there is no shame in abandoning foolish companions. The more fool those who spoke it. That much you know for certain.

The singer lands just as you wish for luck in battle, to guide the gloom blade true. Slowly, agonizingly slowly, you step close, unseen and thanks to the song itself unheard, step close and draw the blade over her throat.

Akorian Stealth: 1d20+ 12 = 25 vs Harpy Perception: 1d20+7 = 23
Raider 6 takes 7 Damage -> Now at 28/38
Song Ends

As she turns in your grasp and starts to flee you sure you're about to feel her sisters' claws in your back. Instead, all but the one you still have trapped in shadow take wing, not even bothering to pick up any of the half-conscious halflings, though they did manage to free the one Warty had wrapped in slime.

Raider Four is no longer Entangled

They are in the air, though not out of range of spell and bow by the time the others wake. What do you do?

[] Let them leave, concentrate on securing the shadow bound raider, the spell won't hold her forever

[] Fight on, they are wounded and you are still fresh if shaken

[] Write in

OOC: I do not normally post battle rolls because there are just so many, but those willpower rolls have to be seen to be believed. At least Kori got to shine, he even got to slice something with his brand new spooky sword.

Fliers are too much of a bother to pursue.

@DragonParadox so all the captured halflings got dropped right? None captive anymore?

I say we let them leave but keep our guard up, maybe even let the bound one free to encourage them to leave since we made it clear we are not easy prey and a few likely to die if they keep trying to fight.

What you think @Goldfish, being our usual battle planner?

We're unlikely to be able to kill any of those that are fleeing before they escape, so we shouldn't even try, IMO. Between Kori, Mina, and Iolda, they've each already expended spells, and there are injured Halflings for Mina to heal with her Hex. If they get injured again during the day, or as part of a follow-up attack by the Harpies, we might not have the spell slots remaining to do it later.

Lingering here or continuing the fight might also attract more unwanted attention from nearby creatures.

Better to get everyone sorted out and ready to move while we deal with the captured Harpy.

[X] Let them leave, concentrate on securing the shadow bound raider, the spell won't hold her forever
-[X] Kori will use his headband to cast Detect Thoughts and try to interrogate the Harpy with assistance from Mina acting as a translator.

If y'all haven't seen it yet, Tomcost has a new quest that's still in the character creation process.

Arc 4 Post 4: Echoes from Below
Echoes from Below

5th of Rova 4707 A.R. (Absalom Reckoning)

As you hasten to secure the prisoner Gorok follows suit. Raiders you know usually have the good sense not to spill blood twice on the same stone. Unless they are starving or duergar trying to square a debt with shackles or dero on some mad search or... You shake yourself out of the thought, none of those have wings, hopefully this is nothing more than an opportunistic attack on what seemed like a lightly defended group with amny dependents.

While you had been pondering Mina had been healing, making the mark of her almost-spell again and again dispersing healing to the shaken halflings. One cannot help but notice they are much more at ease with her now that they need something.

"Secure," Gorok hisses and not without good cause, the raider had gone from being bound with ephemeral shadows to very solid rope with Cob holding the bone knife to her throat. The iruxi motions towards you. "Listen yes?" Obviously he does not mean with your ears.

Harpy Will Save vs Detect Thoughts: 23, 11 (Success; Failure)

So begins what must be the oddest conversation you have ever taken part in. Mina questions the raider, the 'harpy' you learn is the name of her kin, words echoing strangely as you hear them in one tongue and she in another, and you try to parse out the true answers in her mind from the lies she tells aloud... which also have to pass by Mina. A frustrating time is had by all, beside Cob who wanders off at one point to wash off the blood he's still wearing, but eventually you manage to piece together a timeline of events.

The harpies of the Bleak Talon Tribe had been chased into the upper caves by black armored men like the ones you had fought near Longacre, Chelixian 'knights' and so they had decided to raid down into kobold territory, a strategy which had worked very well until the self proclaimed dragon-spawn had figured out how to build traps that account for winged foes, which in turn pushed the raiders to look for easier meat by bypassing the kobolds to hunt even deeper.

All that would have satisfied you had it not been for a glimpse of the last person they managed to snare near here, not mongrelman, not one of the dour dwarfs, not one of the people, the eerily beautiful face looking back at you from the prism of the raider's memory is of a kindred that you have only heard of and yet know with the surety of a thousand nightmarish tales recounted: drow.

Akorian Knowledge Dungeoneering: 1d20+5 = 16 (Success)

"We need to leave, right now," the words are out of your mouth almost before the thought had formed. "Double time we need to make it to the entrtance as fast as our feet can carry us."

"What did you see?" Gorok asks, a worried flick of the tongue and accompanying the slow, thoughtful blink.

"Drow, they caught one. This close to the passage into the burnlands it can only mean one thing, raiders. We need to not be here when the main group arives."

"Drow raiders? The demon elves?" Iolda looks up sharply from talking to one of the older halflings whose name escapes you.. "I'd ask if they are as bad as the stories tell, but the look in your eyes is answer enough." She sighs, running her fingers though short curly hair somehow managing to tangle it up more. "Remesiana isn't a bad place as places in Chelix go. I'd like to give some kind of warning, but not at the cost of being put in shakles again."

She had been a slave once then, the notion is not surprising from what you had been able to parse of this Bellflower Network of hers. You abstrain from offering the advice most often given when there are raiders from the dark cities about: 'Slit your own throat rather than give up your knife'

"We should ask the kobolds if they know anything about raiders from below," Mina puts on a brave face. "Knowledge would serve us better than blind flight."

For his part Gorok seems inclined to agree and Cob is not going to argue one way or another, but they look to you as the most knowlegeble in matters of the dark elves, theoretical as that knowledge may be.

What does Akorian sugest?

[] Stop and question the kobolds, maybe they will even reward you for handing them the prisoner

[] Make all haste to the surface

[] Write in

OOC: Well you know what they say about interesting times...

Sorry, Mina, but I'm with Kori on this one. We don't want to be anywhere near a Drow raiding party. Even if the Kobolds did have helpful information, there is no way to know beforehand whether they'll be hostile, or if the information we get from them would be worth the time we lose reaching out to them.

@DragonParadox, how far does Gorok estimate we are from the exit and our meeting with the Andoran ship?
