Regarding Exploding Canon's portrayal of Taylor Hebert and how it does hit better than many other wormfics (especially considering it portrays her from an outside perspective):


I've been grumbling on the interwebs about the infuriating habit of the Worm fandom to treat Taylor as a blank slate on which to write whatever the hell they like.

Heck, there's a significant misconception that Taylor is "lacking in personality" which is somewhat infuriating given the narrative strength of her PoV (to the point that many people increasingly failed to look at the Wormverse through any lense other than Taylor's extremely tinted ones).

As for why this might be the case? Personally I was willing to write it off as a horrible self-reinforcing ouroboros of people refusing to read Worm canon (even bragging about not reading it), going purely on fanon, writing their own fanon, ad nauseam. But it was suggested to me that "most of the fandom, even the ones who actually read the story, don't so much identify with Taylor as a complete person but rather as one of them...They identify with how strongly they identified with her." Which...seems plausible enough to me?

Anyway, this brings me back to this story, which actually does make an effort to understand and convey Taylor's personality (including traits like her bullheadedness and reluctance to rely on others, how how annoying they would make her from an outside perspective) and include them in the story. I appreciate that.

Don't take this the wrong way, Saurian, but this read like I just stumbled into the middle of something, then you proceed to rant about something kinda connected, until finally tying it into the story in a superficial way.

And I am not talking about the necro.
Stories have a beginning, the middle, and an ending. So do posts, when appropriate. And yours, falls short.

I sympathize that you are annoyed at idiots thinking that Taylor is a blank slate, but it really isn't something at all connected to anything here. I also have no idea where the quotes came from.

As for the story being updated, you can check the author's profile. He sometimes posts updates on his situation.

I think Saurian is bringing it up because Exploding Canon has done an excellent job of portraying Taylor's personality, and Saurian thinks that other fics have a habit of screwing that up.

But yeah, injured myself a bit back, still not fully recovered, had health drama crap going on... I've barely managed to open my Exploding Canon docs in the last couple months, even before considering that the next chapter is proving a pain to write for its own reasons. Dunno when the next update will be.

There's been good stuff mixed in there, to be clear -I'm no longer sharing a computer, so in theory I could write more if I wasn't so messed up- but plenty of drama.

Uh, no they're not? They gave a legitimate critique for the presentation of your post, hells I stopped reading your post midway through the third paragraph because I still hadn't seen any indication that it wasn't a rant unrelated to the story, and if not for @Callmesalticidae I would still be thinking that.
 
Rule 4: Don’t Be Disruptive - If you have issues with SV's Rules, there are more appropriate venues to criticize them.

How is the thread ruined? There wasn't a conversation to derail, and it's obvious to one and all when Ghoul King does/doesn't post. SV has the right of it for not infracting necroposting specifically for the act of necroposting.

The mods aren't lazy. They specifically have not banned thread necromancy.
 
At this point you even get Threadmark notifications so you'd know if I posted an actual update even without bothering to click into the thread. So there's not even much of a Hope->Disappointment concern.
 
That kind of takes the fun out of things, I'll admit, to no longer see "Ghoul King made a 5,000-word post" and have to wonder whether it was a chapter or some theorizing and meta commentary on Worm.
 
Did we ever figure out the fate of the rest of the undersiders? Can't imagine tattletale to be doing well in a simurgh zone, though lung being stuck in a rage/berserker state actually seems incredibly useful as something to eventually dump out the fight scion...

I don't think the audience should know as yet, but it's possible I've lost track of some relevant info popping up in-story. At one point The Plan was actually for the audience to get a Lisa Interlude that went over the non-Taylor Undersiders in detail, but I never got more than about a page written of it. (Partly because the more I think about canon Lisa the less credible a character I find her, making it difficult to write her, but mostly because I could never get it to be more narratively productive than 'I'm sure the audience cares about these folks, let's rattle off what's going on with them and then ignore them') So it's less clear in my head what is or is not known about the Undersiders from an audience perspective.
 
We had a quote from the Numberman interlude:
Coil's catspaw, the Undersiders, were handling themselves well enough in the aftermath, missing member aside. Not holding together as a group, it seemed, but they weren't particularly significant, certainly not with Coil dead.

And that's about it. So they escaped, fell apart as a group, but doing well(?).
I think the TV provides a way to give us a snippet here and there without devoting an entire interlude to it.

    If you have issues with SV's Rules and wish to discuss them, we have far more appropriate venues such as Staff Communications or the Suggestion Box. We will be glad to field them there. However, as a courtesy to your fellow posters who wish to enjoy the content on the forum, please do not muck up threads outside of those forums with complaints about the Rules.

    @deletedaccount43 has been given a standard Infraction and will be taking a short vacation from the thread.

    In the meantime, let's drop this subject for good!

    Take time to heal first. Get massage therapy, or whatever you need to get better. None of us want you to die just so we can have a finished story. We aren't paying you. Stay safe and get better amigo.
